I can’t possibly express to you how fun this story was to read! But by crocodiles and bonnets, I’ll try.
Take life in 2025 in one hand, 1800s Bridgerton in the other, smoosh them together, add a lucky sock & you get hilarious references, scandals, aghast parents, dresses you didn’t know you needed and time travel with a minuscule side of drowning. Did it work? Are you interested now?
All that aside, Blaze & Josephine couldn’t have been more perfect together. Although over 200 years apart, they were two halves of a chaotic whole & I was SAT. They had the sweetest chemistry and banter, I simply binge read all 250-some pages.

Blaze is a simple Nebraskan man existing in the year 2025. Every summer, he spends his time fishing and every winter, he's working long hours on his family's farm. Josephine hails from the year 1813. She comes from a noble family who begs her to marry a wealthy nobleman. However, Josephine is just fine being a spinster at the age of twenty-eight and running her dress shop, thank you very much. When Blaze falls off his boat and is whisked back to Josephine's time, an unlikely meet cute occurs and the two soon find themselves fake married to one another. Josephine is desperate to find a way to send Blaze back to his own time and restore her shaky relations with her family. That is, until she learns what a kind and gallant man Blaze is despite his quirky ways. Can love survive across the centuries, or will Blaze and Josephine be ripped apart by the hands of time?
Last year, Alexandria Sharpe was kind enough to gift me a copy of her debut novel, "Forget Me Not," and I absolutely adored it! When she announced she was looking for street team members for her next release, I jumped on the opportunity without a second thought. Being a part of the Single Sock Street Team has been an absolute blast, and I'm super excited for everyone to get the chance to read "The Spinster & the Sock."
This book was seriously so bingeable! I read most of it in a single sitting and I absolutely could have kept going if I didn't need to wake up the next morning. Blaze and Josephine are instantly loveable characters, and I found myself rooting for their unlikely love story from the very beginning. This book is brimming with humor and heart, which makes the pages just fly by!
The thing I love most about this book is the easy nature of Blaze and Jo's relationship. Despite being from different time periods and upbrings, they are both outsiders in society. Josephine is a spinster who doesn't want to get married and Blaze is a bit of a country bumpkin. They are both seen as other, and this unites them fairly quickly. These two feel like best friends who could spend every day together having a blast just doing the simple things, such as preparing food or washing dishes. This ease between them showcased how special their relationship is better than any fiery chemistry ever could.
Speaking of chemistry, Blaze and Jo certainly have some great romantic tension going. At the start of this book, these two agree to fake marry each other to get out of some unsavory circumstances, but they both know what they have can't be real. They are from different time periods, after all. As the two spend more time together, they come to realize that the other has an amazing personality and that they are hot in their own way. The tension between these two gets mighty fierce until they eventually give in to the temptation and kiss one another.
The spice factor of their relationship only grows after they finally kiss, but this entire book is super mild in the bedroom. There are some super humorous scenes that include them making out in unconventional places and even a bed that breaks. This book definitely brings the heat with its romantic scenes, even if there aren't too many that are overly explicit. The strip poker scene did an amazing job of showing Blaze and Jo's attraction for one another without anything too crazy going down.
Also, Jo is a lady from the early 1800s, so she knows little in the ways of "the sex" as she calls it. Blaze is such a gentleman at filling in the blanks and making sure that she actually has a say in what happens in the bedroom. It astounds me how little choice women had back then, but I guess it really shouldn't as many women today still suffer from the same outdated mindset of wanting to please the man in the bedroom no matter if they are uncomfortable or it hurts them. Blaze worships the very ground that Josephine walks on, so treating her right certainly isn't a problem for him.
I really can't stress enough how beautiful the way that Blaze and Josephine complement each other is. They feel as though they have found the other half of themselves and that they can finally be happy as long as the other is by their side. Their romance is so sweet and wholesome, and I ship them so much.
This is definitely one of those love stories in which something major has to be sacrificed in order to obtain any type of happily ever after. Someone has to give up the very life they've known if there is any chance of them being together until the end. This adds a good amount of suspense to the story, as it is unclear how exactly Blaze and Jo are going to achieve their happy ending.
The fact that this book is co-written by two best friends is evident. It feels like reading an online roleplay in which one person writes a chapter and then the other person responds back. I know there were moments in which they collaborated more than that to keep the story on track, but the story always felt super authentic to each author's character. I would definitely read more from this dynamic duo!
Before I conclude this review, I wanted to take a moment and talk about some of the really quirky bits of this book. The authors certainly have a bit of a crass sense of humor and also love to highlight the strangest things. This book includes a gator in a bonnet, cock socks, and a nosy grandmother who everyone refers to as Gerty (even though that's not even close to her real name). This book is unhinged at times, but it only adds to the binge factor and the spontaneous nature of this story.
Overall, "The Spinster & the Sock" is a phenomenal read that I can guarantee I'll reread many times in my life. It is super bingeable and only takes a few hours to fly through. I am in love with Blaze and Josephine as characters and I absolutely ship them to the moon and back. Smelcer and Sharpe are a great dynamic duo with hilarious senses of humor, so this book was truly a grand time from start to finish. I look forward to seeing what these two do next!

The Spinster & The Sock by Alexandria Sharpe and Kier Smelcer is a quirky historical rom-com that blends Regency-era romance, time travel, marriage of convenience, and completely unconventional banter into a story that is as unexpected as it is entertaining. As someone who doesn’t typically reach for rom-coms, I was pleasantly surprised by just how refreshing this read felt, particularly because it introduced me to something I had never experienced in a romance before: time travel.
What stands out most about this story is the wonderfully mismatched pairing of Blaze and Josephine. Throwing a Nebraska fisherman from the modern world into Regency-era London is already a recipe for chaos, but pairing him with a spinster dressmaker who is perfectly content with her unconventional life takes the situation to another level. Their differences create plenty of opportunities for humour, while their forced marriage gives them the perfect foundation for a romance that develops through confusion, circumstance, and plenty of entertaining friction.
The humour is definitely one of the strongest elements of the story. The banter has an unfiltered, modern quality that contrasts brilliantly with the Regency setting, while the pop-culture references add another layer of fun to the narrative. There is something delightfully absurd about watching characters navigate the expectations of historical society while simultaneously dealing with the impossible reality of time travel, and the authors clearly embrace that absurdity rather than trying to make the story overly serious.
For me, the easiest way to describe the reading experience would be Bridgerton meets Doctor Who meets Miss Congeniality. You have the Regency setting and societal expectations of Bridgerton, the completely unexpected time-travel element of Doctor Who, and the unconventional, comedic romantic energy of Miss Congeniality. It is an unusual combination, but somehow it works incredibly well and gives the story a personality all of its own.
The pacing keeps the story moving, with the combination of romance, humour, and the question of whether Blaze can ever return to his own time creating a constant sense of curiosity. While there were moments where I would have enjoyed a little more depth or development, particularly around some of the larger time-travel elements, the overall reading experience remained light, entertaining, and genuinely different from what I usually pick up.
I would recommend The Spinster & The Sock to readers who enjoy historical rom-coms, marriage of convenience, opposites-attract dynamics, unconventional heroines, fish-out-of-water heroes, and stories that aren't afraid to have a little fun with their own premise. I'm not even sure where to start other than I loved every second of it.
Blaze is just a normal a fisherman guy in 2025 who falls off his boat and wakes up in 1813 London. He runs into Josephine who's this super independent spinster who runs her own dress shop and is basically telling society to shove it. They get caught in a compromising position and because that's how things worked back then they're forced to get married, this book hooked me instantly.
Blaze is my new fav person, he has zero filter, he's dropping F bombs and making pop culture references that fly so far over Jo's head they're basically in orbit. Watchin him try to navigate Regency society is like watching a toddler try to defuse a bomb. It's sooo funny and I was cackling the whole time.
And Jo ughhh I loved her. She's so smart and capable and you can tell she's just exhausted with the whole marry a rich man thingy. She's perfectly happy on her own but what I really loved was how Blaze treated her. He never once made her feel like she was less than, like he was all about her choices and her happiness which honestly felt so revolutionaryy for the time.
Their relationship is just so sweet. They start as this fake married couple but they quickly become this little team. They're just two weirdos who get each other. It's less about this fiery, passionate romance and more about them becoming best friends who also happen to be married. It was just so wholesome
Ofc there's the whole time travel problem hanging over their heads like is he stuck there forever? Can he get back? It adds this little bit of angst that had me genuinely worried about how they were gonna make it work in the end.
Seriously if you want something that's just pure fun thissssss is it. It's like if Bridgerton and a modern day sitcom and outlander had a baby. It's funny, cosy and it's just a really fun time.

This time-travel histrom is so incredibly fun and hits all the right notes for a summer read - it's funny, on the nose (the reader feels included in all the inside jokes), and just the right amount of touching with a love story for the ages - literally.
Our fearless mmc, Blaze Hollows, is a fisherman at sea, who is knocked off the boat and instead of drowning, is time-travelled to the early 19th century, where he (quite literally) runs into Miss Josephine Dashwood (spinster, modiste, rebel of the ton) and the two are quickly forced into a marriage via misunderstanding (she rescues the poor shaken man who has no idea what time he's in and in turn, they're put in a *compromising* position). So they marry and go from strangers to HEA, and along the way learn to live in the 19th century with all its Bridgerton-esque foibles for Blaze, while he tries his best of Outlander-himself back in 2025. Does he/do they ever get there? Guess you'll have to read and find out.
This story of full of silliness and banter, and pointing out the ridiculousness of both our time and that of the past. It's also packed with earnest characters who fall in love across time, and you 100% fall for them too. Our fmc and mmc are quirky and lovable, and this story is light enough to embrace the funny, and serious enough to truly worry about what happens when our mmc gets pulled back to his own time - you really root for them! The pace is absurdly fast (perhaps because I couldn't put it down), and I'm left wanting more Blaze and Jo - or at the very least to be friends with them.
The pop culture references are hilarious and well-timed, and tongue-in-cheek nod to all of the romantic works that the authors drew upon to create these adorable knuckleheads. Also, t*tty shots are appreciated in any time, so there's that.

I devoured this book. It was such an enjoyable read. The characters are have such an interesting dynamic which keeps you hooked from the beginning. I didn't want to put down the book once I picked it up to read, but I flew through this book and couldn't stop laughing.
I don't typically read a lot of time travel romances, but I couldn't pass this up based on the description alone. It didn't feel weird or full of plot holes. The writing made sense, without creating too obvious of a plotline. I often find myself guessing the outcome, but the events in the story weren't a recycled version, but rather brought a fresh take on the concept. The constant references and inside jokes were a very enjoyable touch as well. I also loved how it got right into the story and didn't create a drawn out beginning, which made it easier to become hooked right from the start.
Blaze is such a well rounded MMC, yet he's super chaotic which I found to be one of my favourite part. The references to Outlander that he made were a great addition. His dynamic with Josephine felt very natural, considering that they are from two different time periods and countries. The characters were very well crafted and gave us some entertaining situations within this story.
Josephine was done so well. She's very pragmatic, but not to the point of being prideful or stuck up. She felt so authentic in how she was portrayed, in a way that you can't help but understand why she feels the way she does about her status in society. She is a perfect balance for Blaze's chaos, and makes the story one that you want to keep reading, in order to find out what could possibly happen next.

I don't typically read a lot of time travel romances, but I couldn't pass this up based on the description alone. It didn't feel weird or full of plot holes. The writing made sense, without creating too obvious of a plotline. I often find myself guessing the outcome, but the events in the story weren't a recycled version, but rather brought a fresh take on the concept. The constant references and inside jokes were a very enjoyable touch as well. I also loved how it got right into the story and didn't create a drawn out beginning, which made it easier to become hooked right from the start.
Blaze is such a well rounded MMC, yet he's super chaotic which I found to be one of my favourite part. The references to Outlander that he made were a great addition. His dynamic with Josephine felt very natural, considering that they are from two different time periods and countries. The characters were very well crafted and gave us some entertaining situations within this story.

If you’ve read my blog before, you’ll know I’ve been a fan of time travel romance for a very long time. Most of the protagonists in these books are competent, capable, and adjust quickly to the time they find themselves in.
The Spinster and the Sock – a standalone joint effort from Kier Smelcer and Alexandria Sharpe – is the opposite of this, and it’s absolutely glorious.
Blaze Hollows is a man that doesn’t really have a plan beyond the year’s fishing season. But but as we come to discover as soon as he finds himself in Regency London – with only one lucky sock remaining -he’s also a pop culture phenom. He namedrops Outlander, Punk’d and Pride and Prejudice, just to name a few. Bless his heart, the man just keeps screwing up, lurching from faux pas to faux pas – but it’s never with malice.
Unwittingly along for the ride is Josephine Dashwood. Jo, the titular spinster, is empowered to a certain extent – running her modiste and gleefully telling her relatives that “I have been ruined for years” – while still being wholeheartedly believable as a woman existing within the social confines of the 1800s.
I’m not sure how exactly the writing was split between the two authors, but from Blaze and Jo’s alternating perspectives, I instantly got a sense of how the two of them differed – not only in their personalities, but in their approach to issues. While neither are afraid to speak their mind, Blaze is the more impulsive – and foul-mouthed – of the two, and from this readers can instantly tell how fun it’s going to be when they collide.
And it is fun, undoubtedly. I mean, in what other context would you have the MMC goad someone else into a fight by describing themselves as “well-bred and corn-fed”? But it also manages to be surprisingly heartfelt, examining themes like women’s rights and classism.
Experiencing Blaze’s complete disregard for social norms first hand changes the nature of Jo’s rebellion. Though before it was small, quiet, and exhausting, being with Blaze is the nudge she needs to validate it on a larger scale – as he tells her that “You don’t have to watch what you say around me. […] It won’t make me think any differently of you.”
While marriage of convenience isn’t a trope I read regularly, I liked how it – and the gradual deepening of Jo and Blaze’s relationship – was used here. The whole book plays out over several months – and though its light on the spice, the yearning and the affection were a delight. It’s a credit to the writers that I genuinely forgot that there was any “convenience” aspect to it at times!
Though there is some peril here- with Jo’s discovery of how exactly Blaze travelled in time hanging over the final act – it is light. The real fulcrum of the story is how Jo and Blaze change the world around them in small ways, and each other in big ones. Seeing their relationship build throughout the story made their happy ending feel completely earned and triumphant.
The Spinster and the Sock is a light time-travel romcom that doesn’t take itself too seriously. Fans of that – or the time travel and regency heavy hitters – will definitely find something to love here.

I’ve mentioned Alexandria Sharpe before. I read her debut novel Forget Me Not. Well, when I saw she was the cowriter of this quirky present to regency era time travel romcom, I literally said gimme! This was so funny and a nice light read after reading Birds of A Feather and Releasing 10 back to back.
Blaze Hollows is a modern day (2025) fisherman working on a charter fishing boat in the Bering Sea. When he gets swept overboard he is sure death is imminent. Imagine his surprise when he surfaces in a pond in Regents Park, London in the year of 1813.
Josephine Dashwood is considered a spinster at the age of 26. She had turned down the Viscount Edmondson’s marriage proposal multiple times in favor of sticking to herself and her up and coming modiste shop.
When Blaze and Josephine quite literally run into each other, hilarity ensues. Jo takes pity on a sopping wet Blaze and brings him to her shop to offer him dry clothes. This book has been such a delightful read!!!!!! I'm very happy to have been able to arc read it.
First of all, the humor was sooo good. The fact that two different times - very polite and proper vs casual and open - met and both of the mc's humor senses, the references are different. So much so that they meet a wall and they have to either laugh it off by themselves or explain it. But both paths were so beautiful and funny and so adorable.
Secondly, Jo and Blaze were so perfect. Both adorably awkward, funny in their own sense, sweet and very good people. Blaze has a very strong spirit for not loosing his mind after what happened to him. He not only as gracefully as he could took everything openly, but also ended changing lives for a better just by being his sweet amazing self. Jo, on the other hand, showed her strong will and huge patience for taking every hurtful word coming her way and making her success, no matter what others thought and still preserving her warm heart and goodness. That is why they were the perfect match for each other. And though their story startled really strangely it ended on a very beautiful note.
The story itself was very warm and cosy. It had its own dark and paainful moments, but all the warmth had stolen the show absolutely. The book was written really well, made me rooting for the mc's. It was both interesting and enjoyable.

It also helped give a great sense of what Blaze loved in the modern time and added a lot to his personality.

Time travel? One of my favorite tropes and more when it gets the characters the story they deserve. This one will be one of my favorite. Because I had a blast reading this book. The story was one I will remember forever, a story of two characters from different centuries who get to live together a life neither one of them was hoping or dreaming. Blaze comes from 2025, present time. Gets sent to 1813 without his consent where he meets Jo. Where they still wear big dresses, everyone talks and says different words than the modern age, no phones, no internet nothing. But let me tell you, when their worlds meet/collide? It's a beautiful rollercoaster, I mean forced proximity and marriage of convenience in the same book? Signed up me. I will definitely reread this ones soon I need more of them, more of their story. Beautiful writing, well done characters (wishing i could meet them), side characters complemented them well, you could feel and see the scenery in your mind just by reading. Absolutely amazing, 100% recommended!!

This is definitely a fun rom-com of a man who stumbles his way into the past and finds his way into the absolute love story of a lifetime. There were definitely funny moments and gasp moments and second hand embarrassment moments 🤣
Once Blaze and Josephine actually become a couple I really could sense a turn in their relationship. The banter was more adorable and the characters found their voices. Blaze definitely became the kind of MMC you would want in your corner. He did not like how Josephine's family treated her so instead of just reassuring her, he did something about it too. And Josephine was a fun character, she did take a little time growing in confidence and speaking up for herself, which I really enjoyed.

Arc read review- Hahaha omg this book had me laughing out loud! A time travel romcom that gives Bridgerton vibes , but also a bit of deadliest catch and outlander. I loved the banter, humor and jokes, as well as the many pop culture references that always confused the crap out of Jo lol! This is def a sunshine x sunshine trope but it works so well! I loved the plot and romance, but really enjoyed the depth of her story. She was such a woman ahead of her time and there was so much going against her as a woman in the 1800s. Blaze basically said screw that and treated her with the respect she deserved as a woman! Such a king for that! Anyways, I had the absolute best time reading this book and will be recommending it to everyone I know!!

TS & TS is now hands down one of my all time favorite books.
This time travel rom-com is HILARIOUS. So incredibly well written. I had SO much fun reading this book, I really didn’t want it to end.
I also have NEVER loved a pair of characters as much as I love Blaize and Josephine. The witty banter, the peculiar situations they found themselves in, the “my wife” vibe was just *chefs kiss*. Alex & Kier honestly nailed it with this book! It is truly a hidden gem.
I would recommend this to anyone who has a really good sense of humor, loves off the wall one-liners, and loves a hottie with a mustache.

I have never laughed so hard in my life!! But more than that, this book is written so well that I felt like I was watching a scene from Bridgerton as I was reading it. The descriptions of the scenery, the clothing — SO GOOD.
And don’t get me started on the pop culture references 😂 Jo and Blaze are about to be your new fav power couple. Be prepared to laugh until you pee and for all of the tension and yearning 🔥 Before I read this, my question was, what does a sock have to do with it? I was lucky enough to get an advanced copy from the authors and I loved the book so much I finished it in one sitting! Jo and Blaze were so relatable and well written, and I fell in love with them both after the first two chapters. The writing was well-done and the characters were fleshed out and realistic (as realistic as a time traveling romance can be)! The walk through history at the end was the perfect way to wrap up the story and provide closure for each character. An absolutely enjoyable read, 10/10!

Seriously though, it was so good. The references to modern films and books and Blaze's humour made everything so much better. Jo and Blaze were also so cute together, and I was so happy by Jo's decision in the end because she deserves a life away from her toxic family.
The way their relationship goes from weird stranger on the road to friends to the most adorable couple felt so natural. And again, that ending was beyond satisfying for both our main characters.
Overall loved the book and totally recommend reading for a light and funny read.

This is not my usual type of book to pick up. But if Kier or Alexandria write it, then I will read it!
I absolutely loved this. It was such a light heated, easy read. Full of joy and giggles. I absolutely loved how Blaze's modern ways completely throw Josephine off track, and her innocent clueless-ness when it comes to his way of speaking.
The ending just beautifully finished the story off, wrapped up nicely in a lovely little bow.

This book was so stinkin cute! It’s definitely a must read. It’s a time travel rom-com. I’m a sucker for anything to do with time travel. Bridgerton meets a modern day offshore fisherman. I LOL’d so many times. You have golden retriever x black sheep, marriage of convenience, time travel, green flag MMC. He has chest hair & a “womb broom” 😆. Need I say more?!? It releases later this summer. Don’t miss it! 🫶🏻

This was so cute and fun!! A short and sweet story filled with romantic tension. I loved the time travel aspect, and loved that it is a rom com. So it has swoony moments but they are fade to black, doesn’t mean that they won’t make you blush! Blaze and Jo have great banter and such a fun relationship!

You had me at time travel! Blaze and Jo who would never in a million years cross paths have and here we are! This book was unique and unexpected in the best way possible. Genuinely charming and there were several laugh out loud moments. Don’t pass this one up!

Time travel and historical romance?? Sign me up! This one was a sweet read of the past and the present coming together, and I loved all the mishaps that came with time travel XD this is a must read for sure, especially on a cozy rainy day!
