Char Dham (The Sacred Shrines) by Shweta Mathur Lall (published by Rupa) is a book that will stay with me for a long time. It blew my mind, exactly like a racy thriller fiction would, even though this book is non-fiction.
In Hinduism, the Char Dham yatra or pilgrimage is believed to absolve one of all sins and lead to moksha (salvation). Shweta takes us on a different pilgrimage, one that makes us look inwards. The essence of the book is rooted in spirituality.
Shweta acquaints us with the Char Dhams—The Jagannath Temple, The Ramanathswamy Temple, The Dwarkadhish Temple, and The Badrinath Temple, in an explorative manner—Why they were established? Who established them? What is their significance? Why have they gained importance? What is the essence of Sanatan Dharma? What was Adi Shankaracharya’s ideology?
The beauty of the book is not in the facts, myths, stories, beliefs, rituals, etc that it lays bare; it is in Shweta’s voice. It doesn’t preach. It doesn’t force the reader to choose a path—belief or disbelief. It merely states, and because of that, it nudges the reader self-reflect, introspect, and untangle the knots that bind us to daily life.
This book is a travel guide. It not only tells you why a Dham exists but also explores:
• why to journey to it
• how to get to it
• which season to plan the travel in
• where to stay?
• and what all to do in order to complete the pilgrimage
The book also very comprehensively gives in-depth information about the history of the buildings from an architectural viewpoint. Shweta’s research is impeccable and is documented in her footnotes, annexures, and extensive bibliography.
If you like reading non-fiction and are drawn to spiritualism, I whole-heartedly recommend this book to you. I absolutely loved it.

The book answers all your queries about these places of worship , delving deep into the mythological aspect, the architectural intricacies and the significance of the rituals practised.
At the same time, the author's evolved writing makes you pause and introspect as to how you can learn and imbibe the unmatched purity of the devotees and the benevolence of the deity.
The book follows the recommended devotional circumabulation path clockwise from the Jagannath temple at Puri in the east, to the Rameshwaram Dham in the south, moving on to the Dwarkadheesh shrine in the west and completing it with a bow at Badrinathji up north.
The devotees first rejoice with the Lord at Puri, the land where he eats , then cleanse themselves on the Rameshwaram shore where the God bathes, followed by a transformative halt at Dwarka where the Almighty sleeps ,and eventually, realisation at the Badrinath Dham where the Revered one meditates.
Stories of surrender, tales of triumph, mystifying miracles and complete devotion make this transformative journey wholesome.

Char Dham, namely - Puri Jagannath, Rameshwaram, Dwarkadhish and Badrinath - have fascinated mankind since ages with their mystical and deep-rooted connection to Indic wisdom and spirituality. These four became the pillars of faith and tradition for zillions of people worldwide and Char Dham yatra came to signify the journey of an entire lifetime.
In her book, Shweta takes the reader on a virtual journey to each of these temples, narrating in such a way that you find yourself there and viewing the scene through the author's eyes. Not only has she given a thorough and detailed description of the places, she has provided many excellent facts and lore associated with these holy places.
There are beautiful narratives of the events that led to the existence of the temples and their deities. The author has also given extremely helpful information about the rules and regulations generally followed there. Every narrative has a solid foundation in an event that happened aeons ago and shaped the destiny of these places.
This book is exactly what we needed as we live in times brimming with uncertainty and chaos. Reading this book reinforced my faith in the Divine. Char Dham Yatra has been a dearly-held dream and inspired by this book, I hope to undertake the pilgrimage someday by whatever grace is bestowed upon me.

From the stories behind the temples to lesser-known spiritual facts, everything is explained in such a simple and beautiful way that the book never feels heavy. It feels warm. Personal. Almost like listening to stories from someone deeply connected to these sacred places.
And honestly, if you’re planning a Char Dham trip someday, keep this book close. Consider it your spiritual travel buddy. It talks about the best time to visit, what clothes to carry, which season feels most comfortable, and how to travel without turning the trip into a survival challenge. At one point, I genuinely felt this book could replace a guide.
