Saab: Small, sentient, shapeshifting spacecraft. The scariest and most versatile weapon in the United Star Systems’ arsenal. Synthetic smartass. Sentinel: Whichever organic stick-in-the-mud the Saab must tote around as her order-giving partner. After the (frustratingly avoidable) loss of her sentinel, Saab Saabrina is invited by an old friend and mentor to spend some time on some primitive, pre-warp world: Earth. It’s not a comforting social visit; instead, it’s a setup. Saabra wants Saabrina to meet Bob—a middle-aged single dad on the edge of empty nestdom. He’s about as far from a standard-issue sentinel as Saabrina can imagine, but maybe she could use something different. Maybe he could, too. And maybe each could give the other a chance to be something more. They just have to figure out how before their enemies kill billions.
I plodded along with this high school freshman boy's nerd fantasy of a science fiction/car love dream as long as I could stomach it. But when a character turns to another character and tells her she has to leave a negotiation meeting because it's militarily MEN only, I quit.
Mr. Cohen, grow up.
Please read my notes if you want to know more.
I received this book free from Goodreads in exchange for an honest review.
I haven't read anything quite like Seth Cohen's Saabrina since The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy many, many years ago, and I enjoyed Saabrina a lot. It's well written, it's often funny without being silly, and the (human) characters are almost painfully believable and show development.
I think I would give it five stars but for one thing, and it's a detail that many readers won't care about or perhaps even notice. I'm a writer myself and I'm persnickety about things like typos and misspellings and odd punctuation. No author should try to proofread his or her own work. You don't see the mistakes because you know what you meant to write. It's best to have a cold-eyed wordslinger go over it for easily confused words (like "flair" when the real word should be "flare" or "fairing" when it should be "faring". Also, there are many places that cry out for a comma and yet did not get one. Still, an excellent read.
I've got a new, personal sub-genre: Rest and Relaxation Read. "Readcation" might work. Sometimes you just want a pleasant space to hang out in for a while; something that affirms there truly is a possibility that our better selves can prevail. This series is a nice reminder. Not that there is any lack of swash buckling high (pun intended) adventure. Slice of Life. Urban Fantasy. Space Opera. I really enjoyed that the mild mannered incognito super hero just happens to be Jewish, a person of faith and genuine family values. Pretty sure this one will be added to my "Personal Favorites" Goodreads book shelf.
What a delightful sci-fi adventure! I adored this fun, slightly silly and sincerely relatable story. Bob was funny and real and Saabrina was bright and interesting. I loved that the lead pair was a middle aged dad and an AI car. Really can’t say enough good things about this book. Excellent for the rest of this series, will definitely be reading it!
If you enjoy happy science fiction, with a funny dad and snappy female duo as the leads, you’ll adore this book. Highly recommend! I received this book for free through Goodreads Giveaways. My opinions are my own.
This book was entertaining, a fun read. It isn't profound literature, worthy of a long book report in your English class, but hey, you didn't really want to read that one anyway. It didn't offend my sensibilities nor strain my suspension of disbelief too much, but then all science fiction does a bit of that last one, which is why we like it. As they asked in that old TV commercial, back in the day, "Try it, you'll like it" and I promise you won't think you're "gonna die". You will have a lot of fun.
Good Science Fiction that does not get bogged down in quantum physics of the future (impossible anyway) is rare. Likable characters, including, AIs and aliens (of any sort) and a storyline that does not require three books, to unfold, are important to me. To create this world, with humor and pathos (Google it) make this a gem of a read. If you share my point of view, read this book.
Juvenile. I finished the book but it was a struggle. The book was one Mary Sue after another. Even the main character, the Saab, wasn't believable. I chose to not read the sequel. I gave it two stars because I'm feeling generous.
I would give 1 start to this book for this chapter itt wrecked the whole book for me and i wont read the next book becase of this chapter but i liked the rest of the book to give it some stars and it is possible justto rip that chapter outandnothave itaffectthebook.
I liked the book until one chapter about a date a n came wish girl goes on with an AI as a wing woman. It was a horrible gender focused terrible cliche chapter that mad the daughter look weak and stupid. At one point she is in a space ship looking out the window looking at the rings of a gas giant planet and she is still crying about boys. There is a tiny bit of Asimov laws of robotics and what does it mean to be human. But over all this chapter was a turd
Couldn't get into it. Felt like I was starting in the middle of the story then it got more confusing as I tried to read it. Maybe if I had gotten further in the story it would have gotten better, but I gave up way before that could have happened. Not my cup of tea. Ended up returning it and the sequel. Unfortunately, you can't download a free sample on a free book.
Maybe I'm biased because I own a 2001 SAAB 9-3 Convertible, but I found this to be a very entertaining read. It's a little hokey, and physics is largely ignored. But, it had a good pace, the characters were endearing, and the plot entertaining. Makes we want to visit Nagelwood!
Here's a good read. A nice sci-if romp that was a joy to read. Nice to read about some intergalactic beings with pronounceable names also. I found the plot and story fun and imaginative . The characters are good and well fleshed out. I will purchase further adventures , having enjoyed this one. Thank you for writing this one.
The premise caught my attention so I gave it a try. To my surprise it was a great read. I would recommend this book for all of you who love adventure sci-fi. It’s about a man his Saab, bike and daughter and with only a few space battles. Looking forward to reading the next book.
Overall a most compelling read. I would say that overrode the few less compelling aspects. In sixty-five years of reading sci-fy, I am amazed at the simple fact that a re-read of the majority of 'old favorites ' leaves me less impressed now. But, you manage to keep me wanting to see what is next. . . ,
The world building is fascinating, the characters are fun, and the story is enthralling. However, Saabrina was not the humorous, happy story I expected. There is humor, but there is a great deal of death, sadness, and destruction. Although I was looking for a happier book, Saabrina deserves 5 stars.
This person narrative puts a distance between you and the characters. But I liked all the main characters enough to keep reading. I liked the Saab character and all she could do and become a nice mix of robot and human. And the family aspect was a nice blend. Worth reading!
I liked the car being the 'alien'. I think the storyline flowed very easily, which kept it interesting. I will now start the second book of the series and I hope it will meet my expectations.
I could see this as a movie. "Why are all the super heroes young people?" As an "older person I enjoyed the perspective. Likable characters. Reminds me of Alice in Wonderland.
Definitely not the typical Sci-fi story. Bits of “magical science” make this an interesting diversion from more standard fare. This is a mostly lighthearted romp, more of a snack than a meal.
Really enjoyable and entertaining. Such great and fully developed characters and clever backstory makes it easy and compelling to suspend disbelief and just follow the adventure.
I picked up this book thinking I'd get a common scifi adventure, with federation of advanced aliens. Apparently, there's also included : Jewish anthropology studies, American political treatises, and sociology of human mating. Quite a complete book.
Look forward to the next tale about the Saab with unearthly capabilities such as traveling at the speed of light and destroying fleets of battle cruisers.
This book was such a fun read, with an extraordinary pair consisting of "Bob,' a likeable everyman and Saabrina, a super-starship with a brilliant AI and a sleek Saab body. The two of them save the day more than once in this interstellar adventure. Enjoy!!
Dad saves the world over and over and gets back in time for dinner. I felt like there was more substance in a towel being important. I like the idea, but not quite enough to read the second book.
I liked how Sabrina develops now that she is with Bob and how he develops, too. Sometimes too much detail. Was thinking of not reading the next book, but now I think I will!
