This Arabic and English book goes through the Prophet's (blessings and peace be upon him) Hijrah route in detail identifying landmarks and locations of where verses of the Qur'an were revealed. Using metallic inks and hand drawn maps it is tried to make this book look very special. The Book is the Culmination of several years of research driven by the simple desire to determine as precisely as possible the exact route of the Hijrah. In the course of this study, author has conducted dozens of field expeditions, collecting data, recording GPS coordinates, identifying landmarks, calculating distances, and covering as much as possible the entire route by foot. He has also examined every available resource from Hadith and Seerah literature and narrations, to historical documents, maps from the eighteenth century through the present, as well as conducting extensive interviews with local residents to glean information handed down through generations. After analysing, synthesizing, and cross-checking the information from this research he determined as precisely as possible the exact route of the Prophet s (SAW) Hijrah.

Makkah to Madinah – A Photographic Journey of the Hijrah Route is a rare and luminous work—one that blends scholarship, devotion, and historical precision into a single, breathtaking volume. Shaykh ʿAbdullah bin Ḥusayn al-Kadi, a descendant of ʿAqīl ibn Abī Ṭālib and thus from the noble Ahl al-Bayt, has created a book that is visually stunning and spiritually grounding. I had the blessing of studying with him during my time in Dammam in the early 2000s, and I can say firsthand that his gentleness, dignity, humility, and depth of knowledge are reflected in every page of this project.

This is a large-format, coffee-table–style book, but its brilliance is in its exactness. The Hijrah of the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ and his loyal companion Sayyidunā Abū Bakr al-Ṣiddīq is one of the most foundational moments in Islam. Many Muslims learn the map of the Hijrah as children—its valleys, wells, ridges, and villages. As a convert, I did not grow up with those stories woven into my childhood memory, which makes this book even more precious: it brings those once-distant names into clear and vivid focus.

Shaykh al-Kadi traces the Hijrah step-by-step with the care of someone deeply connected to its legacy. He documents the journey from Makkah to the Cave of Thawr, photographing and identifying every landmark mentioned in the classical Sīrah. These include places famous to the Muslim imagination—Hudaybiyya, Qudayd, Wādī al-Aqiq, al-ʿArj, the well of Quba, and many others. Each location is presented not only with historical context but with full-color, often panoramic photography that allows the reader to sit with the landscape itself.

Through these images, the reader can meditate on the terrain of the Hijrah:
— the tense nights in the Cave of Thawr,
— the narrow passes where Quraysh trackers searched,
— the valley where Suraqah ibn Mālik’s horse sank into the sand,
— the resting points where the Prophet ﷺ and Abū Bakr shared food and prayer,
— and the first sight of Madinah itself rising on the horizon.

Shaykh al-Kadi’s tone throughout is concise, humble, and respectful. He lets the land speak. His commentary gives just enough context to place each photograph within the broader narrative of the Hijrah, while the images themselves invite reflection and emotional presence. In this way, the book becomes more than historical documentation—it becomes a devotional companion.

What makes this work uniquely powerful is the author himself. Shaykh al-Kadi is not a secular archaeologist or an academic at a distance. He is a memorizer of the Qur’an, a teacher of Islamic sciences, and a man who reflects the noble character of the Prophet’s household—wisdom, humility, calm strength, and gentle kindness. His lineage connects him directly to the family that lived this journey, and his scholarship brings that lineage into service of the broader Ummah.

For Muslims today—whether born into the tradition or having embraced it later in life—this book offers a deeply moving experience. It allows us to retrace the most blessed migration in human history, not abstractly but visually, geographically, and spiritually. Through Shaykh al-Kadi’s work, the Hijrah becomes something we can walk through, contemplate, and internalize.
