I had read Lesley Eames previous series and thoroughly enjoyed it so really looked forward to book 1 in The Newspaper Girls series - and I was not disappointed .
Jenny moves to Norfolk as support for her mother when her father dies at the beginning of WW2. But she has left the lights of London and cannot see that there is any sort of future for her there. Then she meets Charles Dellacourt who seems to have lots of businesses including his Grandfather's newspaper The Gazette whose editor is retiring and the paper is losing money. She also meets Jay or James who is Charles son in the RAF - who gets off on a bad start with Jenny but these books always have a budding romance.
A series of, perhaps unlikely events, means that Charles offers Jenny the job as editor of said newspaper when she has absolutely no experience of journalism whatsoever. We also meet the staff of the paper one of whom is definitely not in favour of ‘a bright young thing’ taking over and modernising the paper. And then there is the eccentric Iolanthe - who’s heart is in the right place and offers Jenny a new perspective for the paper and Eleanor a downbeaten girl who is treated badly by her grandfather due to the circumstances of her birth. he is a photographer and has passed some of his skills down to Eleanor and the paper could do with better photography.
But who is trying to sabotage Jenny's efforts to produce a profit? It’s actually obvious but the writing makes you want to read another page to find out. Is it an in-house job or from the other newspaper in the town wanting to force its rival out of business?
It’s obvious a lot of research went into this book regarding the workings of a provincial newspaper which I found interesting and the writing is superb
