I had no idea what I was about to read when I agreed to read this story and review it. I said I would read it on a whim to read something new and not a reread of some of my past favorites, but I think this story might be added to said list of favorites!

The story is a fast moving action fantasy that grips the reader in its clutches, and spits them out into the unknown on the other side. I read this book without reading the first, and it is very accessible to new readers, but with how good this book is, I now want to go back and read the first book.

The story itself is quite dark, but the writing's tone doesn't bog you down and drag you under in to the darkness, but instead holds your head above the water, keeping you breathing even against the currents. No character's life is sacred. No one gets plot armor. I did foresee one storyline's ending about 3/4 of the way through the book, but the process to get there was really interesting and kept me on the edge of my seat. I felt jubilant and excited to see what happens next when we reached that point, which means the ending was well developed and did not come out of left field, but was still a good process to get there.

I'm normally not a fan of dual perspectives. Most authors end up with one storyline being more boring than the other, and I end up wishing I could just skip ahead (and marking their review down a star). This is not the case with Solitude. Each time the story flipped perspectives, I found myself excited to read the next part of that character's perspective and learn where their story was going.

Marcos handled two first person present tense perspectives with care, giving each of them a voice unique enough that even without the name at the top of the chapter, I knew which storyline I was reading.

I hope the next book comes out soon because I am excited to see where the next chapter of this brutal war story takes us.

I received a free eARC from River City Siren Press and Marcos F. Eguia in return for an honest review.

This was a solid read for me.

Solitude is action-packed from start to finish, and the war machine just keeps turning the whole time. There is always something going on, always pressure on the characters, and always some new problem pushing the story forward. It keeps moving, but it never really felt empty to me.

One of my favorite parts of this book was Thyra’s character development. That was probably the strongest part of it for me. She is carrying a lot in this story, and you really feel how war, loss, duty, and survival keep changing her. She is not the same person by the time things progress, and the book does a good job showing what that kind of world takes out of someone.

I also liked that this book leans into the idea that war does not just happen around people, it reshapes them. That came through really well in Thyra’s sections especially, and it helped the intensity feel earned. There is grit to the writing, and I do think you can see growth from book one to book two. The author’s voice feels more settled in here and more like its own thing, which helped the book stand out for me.

Overall, this was a strong second entry in the series and a good read for people who like fantasy that stays intense and keeps moving.
