ARC REVIEW💛💛
Just finished Neon Bricks and WOW.
The perfect balance of plot and spice — emotional damage one minute, kicking your feet the next. It’ll rip your heart out, stitch it back together, and reward you with a side of orgasms along the way.
And that ending?? The absolute BIGGEST cliffhanger. I need the next book immediately because there is no way I’m supposed to function after that.
Team Hughes forever… but honestly, why choose?

First time Arc reader here:
Where do I begin?
I was hooked in the first few chapters, I don’t want to spoil too much, but I may have cried because of one certain chapter towards the beginning of the book. It gives a heartbreaking back story and during the present when things build and then explode. Tears, nothing but tears.
The story flowed beautifully without being to wordy, I could actually visualize what was being described; and to me that is really special and an incredible talent.
I love how it gave a childhood favorite a new look, paying homage without outright copying the storyline and give it its own twist and turns.
That ending though!?!? El??! Really? Right when I thought everything was going to be hunky dory and everything was right in the world. BAM! And then cliffhanger. Now I’m itching for more, I need the rest of the story so I can rest easy…but until then, I will just wait not to patiently.
And before I end this review, I do want to put out there that I read pretty…spicy, questionable, morally grey and dubious books; and I absolutely loved this book, it was a bit different from what I normally read and I was still entertained. Not once did I skim the page just to get to a spicy part.
If I loved this book, so will you. I cannot wait to have my friends read it and to actually buy the physical copy.

Love the symbolism throughout the book. Also, the way El Wren ties in the characters to Wizard of Oz *chefs kiss *
What a roller coaster of emotions throughout. I was completely engrossed. Why do these authors wrench your heart at the last 100 pages!!! An unspoken rule of thumb?
Either way, I need book two like yesterday. I need to know what happens to Kat after that ending!! I need to see a redemption arc from a certain someone. I need to see another person embrace everything about themselves and what they have to offer. I need to see that hunky man turn macho/hero.

Thank you to the author for this ARC read I absolutely loved it. I love the re-imagination of this story the banter was so good. The fmc was a kickass girl who does what she wants. There was a part in the book that had me tearing up. I’m definitely going to be recommending this book to all the fantasy book readers out there!

Wow. Oh my Gosh. I couldn't put this down. El's ability to tell a story and the way she writes is amazing. The way each character was written into existence and they just came to life was unmatched. The way a picture is painted in every part of the book was unreal. I could picture everything she wrote with absolute clarity.
I loved our FMC. She's strong, bold, confident. I love all that she is. This book is the epitome of "why choose" because I, quite literally, cannot choose which MMC I liked the most. I think Duncan has a little more of my heart, but I love them all.
There were a few typos and grammar mistakes throughout the book (and prior to release El was asking for them to be shared so she could fix them, I just finished up the book a little after release date so I couldn't provide all of the ones I found) and while those may impact the experience of a book for me, they did not here and I very easily looked over them because of how amazing El is with words. Some of the conversations were very millennial coded but, again, they didn't ruin the book for me or bother me enough to dock any stars from my rating.

Neon bricks is a hefty, wild ride. Much like our FMC Kat who is the perfect blend of vulnerable and badass. It is a breath of fresh air to see an actual human with flaws—a single mom just trying to survive whose world got LITERALLY ripped from her. The side characters were all unique and wonderful. Their voices, their actions, their motivations. You know an author is doing it well when you can tell whose POV you are in without looking at the chapter header. El did a fantastic job. (FYI - if I don’t get more Kane in the next book, I will riot).
El is the Queen of internality and description. Her writing will suck you in and make you feel like are standing right next to all her characters.
As for the story, when I heard Wizard of Oz retelling, I was skeptical. Mostly because I HATED the original film (I know, I know. Don’t come AT me bro, I’m pregnant and feral). However, this story is uniquely its own world with little “hat-tips” to wizard of Oz and wicked lovers.
Why I didn’t give the full five star but was pretty damn close: I did have some bigger questions about the actions of the items retrieved for the “overall goal” in the story that were left unresolved by the end. I am the type of reader that wants the “why” behind side quests and it was not as well defined/explained than I would have liked.
Overall, great find and ARC read. I will definitely be looking out for book 2!

Really my rating is 4.5 but Goodreads hasn’t gotten with the trend of half stars lol
Neon Bricks is not so much a Wizard of Oz retelling but more of an Oz inspired urban Romantasy, rife with political intrigue, why-choose undertones, found family, feminine rage, and more. The world building feels effortless allowing you to get caught up in the plot from the start.
I love the subtle nods to Oz we’re all familiar with, artfully woven throughout the story, and the immaculate pop culture references were top-tier. The characters have depth and flaws that are not only believable but also relatable; their relationships forming, growing, and breaking organically. The emotional damage this book inflicted at some points was unexpected and powerful, the action that moved the story forward ignited my adrenaline, keeping me on the edge of my seat.
Call me petty if you want, I withheld the last half a star in protest at the cliffhanger ending that has me begging for book two immediately!

When I first started this book I was surprised it was not what I expected it to be that didn't stop me from absolutely loving it nor does it stop me from wanting the next book the twists and turns had me so on edge that I literally had to get up and move as I was reading it. Did I cry absolutely did I wish to unalive some of the characters that hurt the FMC 100%. This is the type of book that doesn't just deserve five stars it deserves six ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ and not just because fairytale rewrite why choose are my favorite types of books. So not only would I recommend this book to anyone I want the second one now please.

WOW! First off, thank you, El Wren, for choosing me to be a part of your early reading team. I absolutely devoured this book. My bad for not checking and just assuming it was a standalone, though, because the cliff I was left hanging from? BRUTAL. Great job, though, because you left me salivating for book 2, and I can't wait to continue on this journey.
Enough rambling, let me get to the goods. Our FMC? Kat is a freaking baddie to the max. The way I appreciate that she never spoke badly about her body, ugh, you have NO IDEA how much I enjoyed that. She is a confident lady through and through. As she should be. Our MMCs are all unique in ways I appreciate, and I look forward to watching them grow. Will not say further than that and risk giving away too much.
The world-building, plot, angst, and everything were well placed and well paced. She is a THICK book, but well done and not too long. I was never once thinking that something was dragging or boring. Truly enjoyed every moment. Definitely climbed to one of my top reads of 2026. It's hard to get me up in arms for a cliffhanger anymore because of advanced reading. But this one had me wanting to throw my Kindle and scream lol I recommend joining us on this adventure.

This was actually my first ARC read, and I’m so glad it was Neon Bricks. I gave it four stars because it didn’t hook me right away, and I felt like I had to push through the first couple chapters. BUT once it grabbed me, I was really sucked in. I love the reimagining of OZ. There was a good balance of plot and spice. The spice was definitely spicing, but it didn’t take anything away from the main plot, which I love. I’m a huge fan of why choose romances, but if I did have to choose, I’d be team Hughes.
I really love how El Wren developed Kat’s character. I felt like I really understood her from the beginning. I love that Kat is a plus size girlie. You don’t see that a lot in Romantasy, and it’s refreshing.
The cliffhanger is insane. If you’re not a patient person, I would wait until book two comes out, because I am dying!!!! This should be on everyone’s TBR.

This was an absolutely amazing read. I loved this rendition of The a Wizard of Oz written in the best urban way possible. This was so unique, so original, that you can’t help but be pulled into this. Kat was AC m an amazing and fierce character from beginning to end. A plus size woman with ferocity? Hell yeah. She was perfect, and I loved her for that. She was inspiring to me as a plus size woman myself. And the guys, omg, they were written so well. Their personalities added so much to this story. The world building was phenomenal. And the depth and description made me like I was right there, and seeing this in my mind with such a vivid beauty. I cannot express enough just how captivating this story was. It’s a devour worthy read for sure. You’ll definitely want to toss this one on your TBR.

This Oz retelling completely swept me away. The world-building was immersive, the symbolism was brilliantly done, and I loved how thoughtfully mental health was woven into the story. Kat quickly became one of my favorite FMCs strong, relatable, and doing her best to navigate life as a single mother in her 30s who would do anything for her family. Add in a fantastic why-choose romance, with each love interest bringing something unique to the story, and the banter had me laughing out loud more than once. There were unforgettable characters, and plenty of heart, and just when I thought I knew where things were going, the final chapters completely wrecked me and left me desperately needing the next book. This is a book I won’t be forgetting anytime soon.

El Wren does a fantastic job of painting the imagery and creating a world so vivid you can imagine yourself there with Kat. In addition to the imagery, you also get to know the characters, what makes them tick, and where they draw their strength from along with the battles they face internally.
The story flows nicely and pulls you in the world that you will never forget. The emotional roller coaster is insane. So buckle up and jump into Oz before the storm hits or you may never find the rainbow.

Arguably one of my fav books this year! this book was everything and had everything!! The way she had the ability to add enough spice and also continue to world build and keep the character arcs moving without it unwhirling was amazing. The banter the FMC has with the MMC’s was impeccable!! The fact the FMC was PLUS SIZED/CURVY AND A MOTHER was very great to see that representation. For Wren to cliff hanger use has me dying for another book by her! If you want a book that puts you through your emotions and keeps you sucked in… please give this book a read!!!

3.5/5 — This was an ARC that I was really excited about because I love a good romantasy. Then life happened—I got sick, fell behind on my ARCs, and by the time I finally picked this one up, I was ready to dive in. Then I saw it was over 600 pages, which isn’t a deterrent, but I was definitely not prepared.
Neon Bricks has such a cool concept—a dark Oz-inspired world with magic, political intrigue, and a why-choose romance. I genuinely loved the idea behind it, and there were a lot of moments that reminded me why I wanted to read it in the first place.
Unfortunately, it just took me a long time to get invested. The world-building is really detailed, which I know a lot of fantasy readers love, but for me it made the first half drag. I didn’t really start looking forward to picking it back up until around the halfway point, and that’s usually the point where I would’ve DNF’d if it wasn’t an ARC.
That doesn’t mean it’s a bad book, though. I actually think the right reader is going to love this one. If you enjoy slower-paced fantasy, rich world-building, and watching the relationships build over time, I’d definitely still recommend giving it a shot.
It just wasn’t quite the right fit for me. I wanted to love it more than I did, but I’m still glad I stuck with it because the second half was much stronger and finally had me invested in where the story was going.

I honestly do not even know how to put into words how much I loved this book. It completely consumed me, to the point where I didn’t even want to put it down to sleep.
I fell in love with all of the characters, and the story delivered the absolute perfect amount of spice. I also especially loved the autism representation in this book I must say it was wonderfully done.
The ending had me absolutely flabbergasted, and I need the next book in my hands right now!!

What a wild ride! This book had it all… fantasy, humor, banter, suspense and spice. I love a good retelling and this story was such a fun and interesting take on the Wizard of Oz. Really unique. I loved the characters, the plus size FMC representation and the mental health rep. A fantastic debut novel from El Wren. Can’t wait to read the next book!

Truly beautiful! I loved that the FMC was not the one we always see and a mom. Definitely adds to the emotional levels as a mom myself. It’s easier to connect with a FMC you can relate too. I loved the banter! The twist! The turns! Can’t wait for the next one<3

This was pretty cool - an urban fantasy wizard of oz retelling. I loved how the author tied the characters to the original wizard of oz characters. I also really liked how they turned some of the characters/ places from the original wizard of Oz books into their own. There were parts there were a little slow, but overall a great story!

Why-choose
I enjoyed that she took one of my favorite childhood stories and made it for adults. I was very surprised by thus book and the author. She is a thick book but if you liked wizard of Oz as a kid then you will love this book. There's so many surprised and secrets.

follow the bricks
Wow. I need this book on my shelf. Amazing ,sad,happy all in one book. The tower in the beginning I so want to look out those windows and see everything myself in person. Everyone you should read this one.
Wow. I need this book on my shelf. Amazing ,sad,happy all in one book. The tower in the beginning I so want to look out those windows and see everything myself in person. Everyone you should read this one.

An amazing book. I went through so many emotions reading this. You should be very proud of yourself for such a wonderful book. I will definitely be getting this for my book shelves so I can reread any time I want to visit and walk down the brick road

This was a great read for a new-to-me author. The world-building was immense but very well thought out. I really appreciated the parallels between the Neon Bricks and the Wizard of Oz. I loved that the author really blended a classic story with contemporary RH tropes. This first book was filled with drama, intrigue, and adventure.

Wow. This was an amazing debut. I loved the subtle weaving of Oz inspired goodies throughout. I usually struggle with the first book in fantasy series. The world building can feel tedious at times, but this was done really well. She really balanced world building with the story telling. The characters are amazing and relatable. I did struggle because like many fantasies, there are a lot of characters to keep track of. Part 3 of this book really shines. I went through so many emotions and I’m still reeling from that damn cliffhanger at the end! I can’t wait to read the next book. Please hurry!!!!

Loved, loved, loved.
I was lucky enough to receive an ARC of Neon Bricks and while I am so grateful, all opinions are my own.
It was super easy to be immersed in this world. The writing style was easy to follow and everything just flowed together. I found myself reaching back to my kindle for this book. Kat was easy to root for and relate to!
The ending? Ugh! Immediately need book 2!

What an enchanting story from the beginning. I fell in love with Bree and relate to Kat so much. This book had me from start to finish. On top of that, Hughes is by far my favorite character!! Between the emotional turmoil and the hot lust, I can not wait for the story to continue.

When I tell you I’ve been waiting for this book to come out for well over a year, I kid you not. I don’t remember exactly what it was that Wren had posted but it drew me in wicked fast. Then the posts of her character art, the blips of the plot, and the pièce de résistance was the very first paragraph:
Wren uses a flair of poetry during intense moments, and I’m living for it. I’ve never seen it before, I don’t think, and hope she carries it on into her future novels. Her prose really had a chokehold on me, the flair, the poetry, her use of words all coalesced into something so beautiful and perfect.
The weight in which the slow burn and tension hangs between the characters had me yearning for more, but also wanting to suffer the heat. There was fantastic spice but it did not take over the plot which I found refreshing. Did the characters think about sex often? Yes, but it was more like an appreciation for what that character's body could give.
Wren’s mentions on body image really hit home for me, and maybe I’m a big-back baby-bitch but as someone who has struggled more days than I'd like to admit with looking in the mirror and seeing something beautiful looking back, I felt Every.Fucking.Word.
And the way these men: Hughes, Kane, and Duncan admire her for all that she is and more than just her body, really was a solid note of greatness. Because they didn’t say, “Oh, well, even if you jiggle you’re still hot,” no, they said, “Now, that’s a fine ass I’d like to eat on.” (Not, those EXACT words, but you get it.)
The distress colored throughout Kat’s journey to find her mother and child wrecked me. Kat is destroyed, for good reason. She’s lost her daughter and mother, but through the grief she finds: Happiness, love, friendship, and moments that will change her life forever (some of them so gut wrenching I wanted to throw my phone and never pick it up again.).
The multiple POV’s truly add to the overall plot and are done so well. It gives you a piece of the puzzle from various characters, helping to keep track of, Teagan, Kat’s mother and Kat’s daughter, as well as the internal struggles of Hughes, Duncan, and Kane—and of course, Kat’s terrors, insecurities, and dilemmas. Each character is so well rounded, their thoughts are relatable, their passions are hard to miss, and each stands out in a way I don't think I’m likely to forget.
Now, into the meat:
Kat is a woman with “thick thighs, and beautiful eyes”—a hair dresser who has a flair for all that is sweet and kind . . . and a bit of a pushover or maybe she’s just too nice. Her dreams are coming true, she’s got her daughter, a wonderful and present mother, and, finally, her salon is open. Nothing can go wrong with her family and best friends, Hughes and Jordan, at her side.
Hughes and Jordan are brothers but couldn’t be more worlds apart. While Jordan is full of flair, dirty jokes, and has a penchant for bringing a smile—Hughes is decidedly not. Hughes fights himself, and a dark voice, Sark, that claws at his mind, reminding Hughes that he will never be good enough. While Hughes holds a torch for Kat, he refuses to ever let her fall into his demons. Even if he would rather be buried between her thighs all hours of the day, and making pancakes in their skivvies every morning, than watching from the side lines.
It’s not until a wicked woman prances into Kat’s salon and shuts it down for tedious, minimal—if even-there—violations, that everything goes cockeyed. Because shortly after, a terrible wind ravages her apartment in front of Hughes’s eyes, snatching up Kat’s daughter, Bree, and her mother, Teagan. Hughes tries to fight the tornado winds to save Kat’s family but doesn’t make it in time before soldiers step out from a portal, and grabs them up, pulling them through the winds which shows a gleaming, emerald city before it closes forever, leaving nothing but a wrecked apartment.
Kat is devastated, as we all would be. Her nerves, and anger, and hopelessness are all right there on the page to cry over, to understand. I found myself dwelling with Kat because it is my literal nightmare to lose my children. But Kat picks herself up and she’s determined to find a way and she does . . . accidentally, and sucks herself, Hughes, and Jordan straight into a portal and into a sunflower field.
In an entirely new world that is too similar to Earth Kat must find her way with nary a map or brochure. She’s hopeless, until The Hollow finds himself in her presence drawn to her like a moth to a flame that she begins her journey: Towards her daughter, and strangely enough—self discovery.
You will not regret picking up this book and taking a dive into an Oz retelling so fantastic you'll find yourself 300 pages deep and not realize that the world has continued turning without you. The ups and downs and all arounds will leave you spinning and teetering off a cliffhanger that may just devastate you.
I just have to say: Bravo El, this was truly an amazing read and I’m so glad I didn’t lose you on TikTok.

It’s always hard to start these, especially when the book is so good - you’re unsure which part to highlight first….
So first I will start with the author. El Wren is one of my best friends, and when she asked me to alpha read for her my first thoughts were #1. There’s no way I’m qualified enough for such a task. #2. What if I can’t help her? … Well it turns out, she didn’t need any help! She more so just wanted someone to fangirl with her, about her morally grey MMC’s and her genius symbolism that she thought up.
El writes in a style I have never seen before, and in a way I didn’t know that I craved. She writes in a very poetic fashion, and paints every scene in vivid detail - which only immerses you into the world of Ozanthia more. She also wrote some BAD ASS FMC’s who don’t take shit, and would happily eat terrible men for lunch. Neon Bricks is chock full of representation, and it quickly becomes apparent how important inclusion is to El. There is strength, beauty and MAGIC to be found in every corner of society, and El takes her time highlighting that.
She wrote a ton of action, and there’s hardly any down time…. It’s either edge-of-your-seat, head splitting suspense and action or something happening that’s important to the plot…. Or a lil spice 😏😏😏 Truly, no pages were wasted with filler words or scenes. She is also DAMN GOOD at writing symbolism!!!! I mean seriously some of the best symbolism call backs to the original stories that I have EVER read from a retelling!!! It genuinely does not feel like a debut novel, because her writing is so in depth and thought provoking - that it feels experienced, and you can tell, she was born to be a story teller.
The MMC’s in this novel are each a little bit of everything booktok craves…. We have a tragic, tortured soul who is a nerdy hacker boy who is utterly infatuated with our FMC… and has been for a long time. We have a rebellion leader who is morally grey and is all hard lines and an unbreakable shell - Until her … and then we have a smart mouthed, red flag, shadow operative MMC who is extremely Damon Salvatore coded.
The side characters in Neon Bricks don’t just feel like side characters!!!!! They feel just as important as the MC’s and have just as much impact!!! As you journey through Ozanthia you will meet some of the best and badass RIDE OR DIE side characters in literature!!!!
Neon Bricks is truly an amazing read, and I could go on and on about why this is the perfect next read for lovers of retellings, romantasy readers AND someone looking to get out of a slump! Please treat yourself to this book, because everyone deserves to experience the journey through Ozanthia. It’s utterly hilarious, and relatable!!!! It’s witty, and FULL of sarcastic smart mouths LOL. It’s suspenseful, and adventurous, it’s just the right amount of spicy but still a deliciously SLOW burn - with enough banter and tension bleeding off the pages to keep you begging for more!
It’s also an emotional wrecking ball!!!! I would be lying if I said I didn’t cry……. Multiple times actually. This book explores darker themes, and that can be emotionally challenging … but I think that’s what hit me hardest! But after crying it out, and going through all the emotions with the characters… I came out on the other side feeling seen, empowered and validated in my feelings about similar experiences I have went though…. And while books often make me feel empowered… it’s not as common that they make me feel seen… and this book absolutely checks that box.
