Christ-Centered Exposition

Exalting Jesus in Ezekiel

Rate this book
Edited by David Platt, Daniel L. Akin, and Tony Merida, this new commentary series, projected to be 48 volumes, takes a Christ-centered approach to expositing each book of the Bible. Rather than a verse-by-verse approach, the authors have crafted chapters that explain and apply key passages in their assigned Bible books. Readers will learn to see Christ in all aspects of Scripture, and they will be encouraged by the devotional nature of each exposition.

About the author

Landon Dowden is the Lead Pastor at The Church at Trace Crossing, Tupelo, Mississippi. With the firm belief that the Gospel is the only hope for aligning our lives with God's Word, Landon is firmly committed to verse by verse exposition of the Bible, because "nothing is better for God’s people than God’s Word." Landon yielded his own life to Christ at the age of eight while growing up in Louisiana. After finishing with a Bachelor's degree from Louisiana State University, Landon furthered his studies with three graduate-level degrees (Master of Divinity, Master of Theology & Doctorate of Philosophy) at New Orleans Baptist Theological Seminary in New Orleans, LA.

He is married to Tara and father to Arabella, Adalaide, Adoniram & Alastair. Leading and shepherding his family is a great priority to Landon, as is making disciples through preaching, mentoring, biblical counseling, and through living life together in the power of the Gospel.

I found this commentary to be accessible and it enriched my time in God’s Word. I am coming away with a greater appreciation for Ezekiel’s message and for his commitment to the Lord. Ezekiel’s life challenges me in my walk with Christ. I appreciated that the commentator refrained from speculation in the prophetic parts of Ezekiel that have not yet come to pass. I don’t think it’s helpful to try to figure out who, where, when or how, but rather to focus on what we can know today from the text. I highly recommend spending time in this book of the Bible and supplementing with this commentary!

Overview of the series: The Christ-centered Exposition series is intended for pastors, parents, teachers, small-group leaders and student ministers. While not every commentary is a verse-by-verse exegesis, the goal is to explain the text carefully and rightly. It is not given to wild allegory or typology. It affirms that the Bible is a Christ-centered book; in other words, the Old and New Testament are cohesive, conveying a united message of redemption through Jesus Christ.

Each chapter begins with an outline and introduction. Then the biblical text is broken up into sections and taught in a pastoral manner. The chapter ends with questions for reflection and discussion making it ideal for group study.

When was the last time you remember hearing a sermon on Ezekiel? It can be a difficult book to read and preach, so it isn't the first to mind when deciding what to read or preach. Exalting Christ in Ezekiel tries to bring some of the grand themes in the Biblical book and explain them in a reader friendly way. I really enjoyed how readable it was. It could be read as a side by side book to Ezekiel or when needed to prepare for a sermon. The author did not let the less clear passages cloud out the clear teachings which tends to happen when one reads and teaches the prophetic books. The book is unashamed in its reformed and evangelical theology which I also heartily liked and agreed with. I would recommend this book, in particular, and the series as a whole to any student of the Scriptures.

A valuable tool for deeper understanding of the Word.

It's taken several months to read, study, send reflect through this book. And, oh, has it been worth it. I am not a minister, just a learner. This book included so much thought and made connections I couldn't have made on my own. I am so thankful for the opportunity to understand the book of Ezekiel as it stands in the story of God and His son, Jesus.

A great collection of sermons on a book that is left untouched by many Christians. Dowden is faithful, Christ-centered (as you would expect in this series), and witty—something you don't usually see in a devotional commentary.

The discussion questions are deep and insightful and make this book especially useful for leading a group study.

(Note: Ezekiel 40–48 is covered in one sermon.)
