A miscellany of short comic strips, a tribute to the creators of the Blueberry comic series, Jean-Michel Charlier and Jean Giraud. By itself, the variety of stories, drawing and colouring styles proves greatly enjoyable, while offering different views about the iconic, flawed Western hero.
My preferred ones were:
- The one by Olivier Bocquet and Anlor, (an episode set during Blueberry's childhood);
- The story created by Vincent Brugeas, Ronan Toulhoat, Raphaël Baudouin and Anaïs Blanchard, when Blueberry faces a delicate situation against a trio of Conderate soldiers, forcing him to take part into an attack against a Coach;
- Enrico Marini's episode, when the artiste Chihuahua Pearl saves Blueberry from a local gang of ruffians.
I have discovered the existence of the series through this album I offered myself for Christmas.

- « La jeunesse de Blue » par Olivier Bocquet et Anlor ;
- « Un Bon Blue Belly » de Vincent Brugeas et Ronan Toulhoat ;
- « For one dollar more » de Enrico Marini

POPKULTUROWY KOCIOŁEK: The album's storytelling structure follows the anthology format, giving fourteen independent writing teams the space to tell their own story from Mike S. Donovan's life . Instead of striving for a continuous, expansive narrative or character redefinition, the assembled writers opted for concise, point-by-point formats. The longest stories run only about eight pages, imposing a ruthless narrative rigor on the authors. There's no room here for the slow-building plot or multi-threaded political-military intrigues for which Jean-Michel Charlier was famous. Instead, we receive essential excerpts, snippets of everyday life, and situational glimpses that chronologically form an intriguing arc, from the protagonist's earliest years to his advanced old age.
The decision to structure the story along the timeline of the protagonist's life turned out to be quite a good one. The volume opens with an incredibly moving account of Mike's childhood, crafted by the duo of Bocquet and Anlor. It's a short story that lays the foundation for the future lieutenant's rebellious nature. However, the pace throughout the book picks up considerably: from intimate, hushed frames filled with poetic silence, to gunfights and escapes through merciless, bloodthirsty deserts. Some episodes are pure adventure, while others focus on subtle humor and parody, exploiting Blueberry's relationships with his constant companions.
The atmosphere created by the scripts emanates from the pages from the first to the last frame. All these small stories are united by a boundless respect for the Western mythology of European comics. Readers will easily find recurring, favorite motifs: the scorching sun, dust on clothes, the smell of cheap whiskey in stuffy saloons. Another interesting plot device is the inclusion of Jonathan Cartland , another iconic cowboy from the Franco-Belgian backyard, in one of the novellas. These winks at the mature reader make the whole thing a very fluid read, and the pace of individual episodes, despite their rapid pace, prevents boredom.
This album's greatest advantage over many contemporary attempts to reimagine classic characters is its clear understanding of Blueberry himself. The creators don't suddenly transform him into a completely different person. Mike remains impulsive, confident, and sometimes stubborn, yet capable of loyalty and sacrifice. Blueberry can make mistakes. He can act rashly. He can get himself into situations he later has to extricate himself from.
In Blueberry's Footsteps, this quality is retained. Individual authors explore different aspects of his personality, but they don't try to force a new version of the character. Equally important, Mike isn't completely isolated from the other characters. Red Neck and McClure still have their place, as do the female characters and various inhabitants of the brutal world of the Old West . This prevents the album from feeling like a series of solo performances by Blueberry. His relationships with others are part of what builds his character.
The use of female characters is particularly noteworthy. In several stories, they are given a more prominent role, not merely decorative. This harmonizes well with the contemporary take on the classic Western , although at the same time, one might feel a certain dissatisfaction stemming from the lineup of authors. With such a large-scale anniversary project, one would definitely like to see more female authors and artists.....
