“Shhh, don’t tell anyone but I’ve learned a few tricks about winning from this book.” Elliot Rudell, Inventor of UPWORDS®
“How to Win at UPWORDS®: the Unofficial Book of Strategies for Playing Your Best Game” by Charlotte Whitney offers many approaches, tips, and suggestions for playing the game of UPWORDS®. It is based on the premise that a player can play a competitive game even when the player holds letters that are difficult to play. While luck is definitely inherent in the game, a player can employ particular strategies to maximize the point count. This book contains advice for both the board game and electronic apps, as well as tips for the beginning, mid, and endgame. In addition, there is a section on the creation and evolution of UPWORDS® and the idiosyncrasies that surround this creative and challenging game.
Charlotte Whitney grew up on a Michigan farm and heard her aunts and grandmother tell stories of "hard times," and was surprised to hear that even farmers went to bed hungry.
That served as the impetus for the settings for her award-winning novels, A TINY PIECE OF BLUE, (winner of American Fiction Awards - Historical Fiction; IIPPY Gold Medal for Historical Fiction; Finalist in Hawthorne Prize for Historical Fiction}; THE UNVEILING OF POLLY FORREST, and THREADS A DEPRESSION ERA TALE. She worked at the University of MIchigan at the Lloyd Scholars for Writing and the Arts Program before leaving to write full-time. Currently she lives in Arizona with her husband and dogs Lucy, a Golden Doodle, and Amanda, a Golden -Labrador mix. She loves hiking, bicycling, yoga. and of course, reading..
I enjoyed the writing style of this brief book and the thoughtful advice for all levels of players. On a recent visit to family we played the board game version of UpWords. It was a lot of fun, even though scoring and word challenges took a bit of time. I downloaded the iPad version mainly to practice, but it has become our favorite format. My husband and I “pass and play” and enjoy the relaxation and speed of the games as we don’t have to do scoring or deal with word challenges. It’s fun and brainy! We are hooked on UpWords.
This is not worth the price. It does not offer any strategies for anyone other than a very basic player. It also is less than 40 pages so it is not a book. perhaps pamphlet is more like it. waste of money if you have been playing Upwords for any length of time.
