Very good suspenseful mystery story.

This book was fun and interesting and kept me intrigued while trying to figure out who was the stalker. There were quite a few characters and many twists which was the fun element for me. I really enjoyed how the story had me continuously guessing what would happen next so I didn't want to put the book down and it had some great twists before the ending.

The book was well written for a smooth reading experience.

I recommend this book for mystery and suspense readers and have given a rating of 4 suspenseful 🌟🌟🌟🌟 stars!!

“Friendship marks a life even more deeply than love. Love risks degenerating into obsession, friendship is never anything but sharing.”

----Elie Wiesel, a Romania-born American novelist, political activist, and Holocaust survivor of Hungarian Jewish descent

Catherine Hunt, an English journalist/writer, pens her debt psychological thriller, Someone Out There that is centered around a divorce lawyer whose life goes haywire or rather say becomes deadly when she takes up a particular case of a woman trying to get a divorce from her claimed to be abusive husband.

Synopsis:

Top divorce lawyer, Laura Maxwell, appears to have it all – perfect career, perfect husband, perfect life. But how well do you really know the people around you? All it takes is one tiny crack to shatter the whole façade.

A series of accidents leads Laura to believe that someone out there is deliberately trying to harm her. The fear starts to pervade every part of her life, affecting her work and her marriage. Increasingly, she feels that no one believes her story, and she must face down her attacker alone. One woman, fighting to survive in a nightmare world.

Laura Maxwell is a successful divorce lawyer in London with a perfectly blissful marital life and a handsome husband, Joe. Unfortunately, Laura's nightmares of someone trying to kill her gets worse when she unfateful accidents after accidents started happening where she nearly got killed, only problem was that apart from herself, no one believed the fact that someone was genuinely trying to harm her physically. This events became more regular when she took up Anna Pelham's divorce case and given the history of Anna's husband's abusive as well as aggressive behavior, it became easy for Laura to identify the person who is trying to kill her. Little did she knew, behind the accidents there was a person who is not interested in Laura's case or anything, it was pure revenge and jealousy. The only question was who and why?

The author's writing is really articulate and the way she have unfolded this story with enough tension and tight mystery, that it immediately engages the minds of the readers and keep them hooked on to it till the very last page. The author have build the tension with a steady pace and the mystery kicks right in the moment when Laura realizes that she alone has to watch out for herself from some unknown entity trying to kill her.

The pacing is really fast since the recurring events and its consequences happen very fast. The narrative is evocative and free-flowing and the mystery is very tightly wrapped under layers of misdirection and brain-twisting clues. The book makes the readers sweat out with anticipation as of who is actually trying to harm this successful lawyer.

The characters are all very strongly developed and given that this is a psychological thriller, the author goes at length in explaining the back story of her main characters, which helps the readers to contemplate with the flaws of the characters. Laura is a smart and brave protagonist who, given the height of her success has made a quite a number of enemies, knew that someone was actually trying to kill her. Laura's domestic life too falls a victim to this killer's dark motives and Laura who just like any other wives never ever doubted her husband over anything, and I really loved how the author transformed her into someone determined with a lot of self-respect within few deadly events. But there is a lot of emotions attached with each and every characters, since the author wants the readers not to hate anyone of the characters because of their flaws, or rather say, wants her readers to understand the reason behind the characters' action.

The author's writing has also another quality, simplicity and vividness. Each and every adrenaline rushing deadly accidents are strikingly portrayed which makes the readers feel like as if it is happening right in front of their eyes. The story itself is so compelling from the very first page, that it made me an instant fan of this debut author and would be eagerly looking forward in reading this author's future books.

Verdict: A must read book for all the psychological thriller fans.

When successful divorce lawyer Laura Maxwell suffers a couple of strange, seemingly unconnected accidents she starts to believe that someone is out to kill her. Who could it be? She is a success at her job and is bound to have ruffled more than a few feathers there over the years, but enough for someone to try and kill her? There are a number of suspects in this page turner of a tense psychological thriller which I found quite hard to put down.

I was thoroughly enjoying this book and had it pegged as a solid four star read until about two thirds of the way through when I hit the “OMG moment” which ramped it all the way up to five stars. I love it when you get a good jaw dropping moment that opens up a whole avenue of possibilities that you had never even considered before.

I really liked Laura. She is successful, shows integrity and compassion. She is just an all round nice person who I could really get behind. I desperately wanted to know more about her and what was going to happen to her.

This is a book stuffed with tension, drama, betrayals, obsession and revenge which moves at a really good pace. Despite the darkness of the story, it is extremely easy to read with the words just jumping off the page at you. I found it so hard to put down, the kindle went everywhere with me – and I really do mean “everywhere”. Thanks to the publisher for the review copy.

Really quite excellent psychological thriller here from Catherine Hunt – the opening scenes just hook you right in, from that point on you won’t want to put it down.

So we have Laura then, who has been having a few scares lately. She is a staunch professional and extremely successful in her career which has lead to a few people disliking her, to put it mildly. So when strange things start happening she believes that there is malice aforethought, but getting others to help her seems like an impossible task.

I loved how the author built the tension in this novel – another standout debut, it starts with a bang and a racing heart and pretty much continues in that vein – heart stopping and addictive, the pressure builds as Laura fights a lone battle against an unknown foe. It will have you on the edge of your seat as you wait to see how it all pans out, the flow of the story is pitch perfect and it carries you along with it from first page to last.

Characterisation is top notch – you get a real feel for Laura and those around her, this may be a thriller but it is character driven and has a strong emotional edge that has great impact, some strong writing and a real sense of menace make this a huge page turner.

Overall then another fantastic story from the Killer Reads team. They know their stuff and this author is one to watch.

Happy Reading Folks!

This was a great start to the book and keeps you reading to find out what is going on as more accidents happen to Laura, the trouble is her husband and the police don't believe her.
This is an intense read and loved the twist towards the end.
A good first book.

Laura Maxwell is a divorce attorney. Evidently someone really does not like her. In fact, they would like to see her dead.

After two near-fatal accidents, she's beginning to feel a bit paranoid, as her husband, the police, even a good friend doesn't believe her.

Is she truly in danger .. or is she delusional? There are plenty of people who don't like her for various reasons. Her boss has a problem because he doesn't feel that she covers his back side the way he wants. A co-worker was fired because Laura would not lie for her. That lie cost one woman her son, when her husband took him and fled the country. Another client is going through a divorce and feels that more should be done. And her husband, unknown to her, is having an affair.

This was a gripping story showcasing all the characters with their flaws and fears and feelings of inadequacy. A couple of these surprised me .... didn't see a lot of things coming. And for that reason .. a very good read.

I gave it a 4-star rating. For me, it would have been a 5 had it not been so closely reminiscnt of a movie I saw several years ago.

Thanks to NetGalley and HarperCollins Publishers for furnishing an ARC in return for an honest and unbiased review.

Laura is a top divorce lawyer working in a firm.
Sometimes she is used to conflict, but not this...

It starts off with a high pitch lead into something where Laura is in fear. The first chapter really takes off and takes your attention to the hilt.

My mind plays guessing games!!!

Laura's private life seems to have it all. A husband who adores her and she him, lovely home, good jobs, no money worries, communication great between them.
But is any marriage 'perfect'?
We all have our flaws.

Accidents start to happen, Laura feels she is being put in danger. But she cannot go to the police without firm evidence, she knows how things works.

Laura is in fear of her life, it takes over her work, her marriage.
Here starts the flaws, the cracks start to show, then they widen out.

Its a very intense read AND its a DEBUT novel.

I have to say, I have read some awesome DEBUT books this year and outstanding, this one is among them.

For debut novels this year so far [and bear in mind its only May!] this is in my top 5.

The twist in this came towards the end, Catherine Hunt really kept me guessing, I had the choice of 2 culprits.

Another angle on this is, how would like to work for a Boss who wants you to cover things up in paperwork?

Just a thought? as it happens within the workforce that Laura works at, how does she cope with that. You will have to find out.

A remarkable first book I cannot wait to see what this author comes up with next.
She will have to match this or excel

My thanks go to Catherine Hunt in allowing me to read and review this from Net Galley [I did send her a message on Twitter] as I was very interested in reading this

This was an interesting read. It didn't really grab me the way I wanted it to, but I was curious to know what happened in the end, and who it was doing all the bad things, and it was definitely worth the wait. It was most definitely creepy!

I won this book through a giveaway here on Goodreads.

It was a nice read indeed. The plot is well structured and the story begins with a scene of great impact that dips the reader immediately in the core of the narration, without mince words. It was almost astonishing to read how, despite the incredible accidents that happen to her, Laura Maxwell, the protagonist, is able to go on with her life. Even though I have to say that she is not aware of a good part of them, it is incredible that she could not perceive the considerable amount of negativity that surrounds her : almost everyone seems to have at least a reason to hate her, and few of them even to kill her.

Just one more little note about Laura, I cannot avoid to point this out:
Everyone: c'mon, Laura, that poor horse is suffering as hell, c'mon, put him down
Laura: *doesn't put him down*
Everyone: *facepalm*

C. Hunt shows the different reasons that could bring each of the other main characters to decide to hurt her, and I knew that these were just prelude for the identification and unveiling of the real conspiracy behind all this. The clues are scattered all over the narration but it is only in the last part of the book -mostly from the other characters' point of view- that becomes crystal-clear how elaborated the plan is. This is exactly what surprised me, because I did not expect the way the story developed.

For what concerns the characters, I think that every one of them is quite interesting. The one who really caught my attention was Anna. At first I was just paying partially attention to her, she was just one the clients Laura had to deal with, but then, when the author presented her first flashback, I understood that she was far more important than she seemed. I still could not understand the purpose of that flashback, but while reading it became more and more clear that she was definitely involved in something. I appreciated the way her personality was developed: she clearly is a sociopath, and being in her mind, seeing events from her distorted point of view was one of the best feature of this novel.

In the end, I can say that this was worth reading, a really good book. I recommend it.

This is just a brilliant psychological thriller, well written and pacy. It is tremendously addictive and from the outset I couldn't put this down.

It messes unbelievably with your head, as you really don't know who to trust, who is doing what and why and is basically just a great read.

Laura Maxwell appears to have it all; she is a highly successful lawyer with a prestigious law firm, and a gorgeous husband, Joe, who is an actor and part owner of his family's hotel.

On leaving work, at the outset of the book, she is relentlessly followed by a huge Nissan 4x4 with tinted windows and she has no idea who the driver is or why he is following her. She is nearly killed on a couple of occasions and is left very shaken and with no idea who would want to kill her.

She then starts receiving text message death threats and is left constantly looking over her shoulder with a sense that someone is following her and watching whatever she is doing.

I really liked Laura, loved Jeff Ingham (the vet) but the rest of the characters were all very strange and some downright creepy, which is the whole premise of the story.

There are some real heart stopping and jaw dropping moments and more twists and turns than a roller coaster.

The pace never lets up until the end and I enjoyed it immensely.

Highly recommended but be warned, once you start you won't be able to put it down until you turn the final page.

I received a copy of this novel from the publisher through NetGalley.

Laura, a family law solicitor in Brighton, is attacked on her way home by the driver of another car, and goes on to receive death threats. She assumes these are from the ex-husband of one of her clients. She is also involved in a child abduction case where, due to negligence on the part of another lawyer at her firm, a the son of a client is taken to Tunisia by the father. Other story strands concern Harry, the husband of Laura's client Anna, who is accused of threatening Anna and downloading child pornography.

At one point the various strands got a bit overwhelming, but they do gradually blend together and make sense. (On a side note, the child abduction negligence thing would be covered surely by the professional indemnity insurance all UK lawyers are required to carry - not sure what expensive costs the firm might be fearing. The misconduct allegation is of course another thing).

I found this story to be well-plotted, although at about 60% of the way through I figured out what was going on and then on the next page it was all explained anyway. I felt the suspense should have been maintained a bit longer. There was too much time spent on the mopping up of loose ends after we knew who the perpetrator was.

3.5* rounded down because I didn't really warm to any of the characters (although Jeff the vet was quite nice!).

Another book that I just couldn't get interested in. Too much back-story/filler that interrupted the flow of the story. The characters were flat and uninteresting. I really didn't care about any of it...not even enough to find out who did it. I was completely bored with all the scenes with the horse. It's very disappointing because the book started out well.

Just had to wake up early so I could finish this before my day began! What an ending!
Laura Maxwell is driving home one night when someone trusts to run her off the road. Shortly after, someone sets a trap for her and her horse Valentine. Someone is obviously out to get Laura but who and why? As a solicitor involved in divorce and custody cases she is bound to have upset people but who is taking their revenge in such an extreme way?
This book got off to an incredibly high speed and dramatic start with a car chase. I loved the way it went straight into the action before introducing the characters. I liked Laura although we didn't get too much depth into her past or her relationships like I had expected. The other characters were great, your expectations of them were totally turned around when they weren't what you had thought them to be at the beginning of the book. I don't know if this is planned as a stand alone novel but I would be very happy to see Laura again in another novel and follow what has been happening to her.
I did figure out early on what was going on but don't let that put you off as I do have a pretty high "working it out" rate due to this being my favourite genre of writing! I enjoyed Catherine's writing style and found this to be a very high quality debut novel. I will definitely be looking forward to her second! Fans of Rachel Abbott should look to this as they will enjoy it as much as I did.

Someone Out There was a good mystery/psychological thriller. It took me a bit to get into, but once I got to the meat of the story I was hooked. The tension is slow building, but I thought the climax was very exciting and I couldn’t guess what direction the story was going in.

I did like the main character Laura and I felt for her as all these terrible things start to happen. I felt for her as she tried to do the right thing by her clients and to protect them from horrible situations (i.e. domestic violence, loss of parental rights, etc.). The secondary characters were good too and I liked that the reader got more than just Laura’s point of view.

The twist wasn’t easy to spot and really brought the story together for me. There are several red herrings that the author uses to keep readers guessing. The ending was fairly good although I would have liked a bit more closure.

I would recommend Someone Out There to fans of adult suspense novels. I think the author did a terrific job on her debut novel and I look forward to future books.

Rating: 4/5 Stars

I received this book from Net Galley in return for an honest review.

A good book should grab you from the very first chapter and 'Someone Out There,' the debut thriller from Catherine Hunt does this and then some! My heart was racing as divorce lawyer, Laura Maxwell, finds herself involved in a race for her life as she is doggedly pursued by an unknown car. This becomes the first in a series of incidents and soon Maxwell realises that her life is in danger. Who is trying to kill her and why?

We soon realise that although Laura seems to have it all with a successful career and a handsome husband, all is not what it seems. Laura is battling her own personal demons and her life is threatening to crumble all around her.

It is not often that a book has a genuine 'OMG' moment but this one definitely does. It is hard to say anything about this moment without giving too much away, but when the motives were revealed, I did gasp out loud!

An absolutely superb book - a great debut.

This one kept me up until 4:00 in the morning and I still wasn't done with! Thankfully I was at a part where my pulse had slowed down a little bit so I could sleep. So many suspects and so many surprises. I guarantee your jaw will drop at least twice while reading this when those secrets come out. Because believe me, they come out of left field and you don't even see them coming.

This was a great story and had great character development. I've never hated a character so much as to turn around and say "oh, he's the good guy". Believe me, anything you believe at the beginning is pretty much totally wrong at the end of this book.

I highly recommend it!!!

Thank you Harper Collins and Net Galley for the opportunity to read and review this book. It is one of the better ones I've read this year.

Someone out there is  psychological thriller at its best there are plenty of twists, great characters, brilliant writing, and dark secrets from the past this  all makes a very impressive debut.

The plot is basically without spoilers that Laura is a successful divorce lawyer and she has a tendency to ruffle feathers but when she starts to have "accidents" she immediately thinks it could be a ex-husband of one of her clients. The book had me guessing nearly to the end this kept me turning the pages.

There are a few slower moments in the story which allow the reader to think and to get your breath back.

This like many debuts this year is brilliant book and would recommend it to anyone who loves psychological thrillers as this will not disappoint and i guarantee you will love it.

Hard to know what to say about this one. Very "Gone Girl"ish - one blurb on the back of the book even says that Catherine Hunt could be the new Gillian Flynn.
Idea behind the story is great - Divorce Lawyer has it all and then starts having "accidents"
She is being stalked - but by who. The end is a bit of a twist that I didn't see coming (I spent most of the book thinking that the stalker was obvious, only to find out...)

Someone out There. By Catherine Hunt

I Chose this rating related because of all its great plot.
It has many twist and turns I could barely contain myself.
I wanted to read so fast just to get to the next page.
But I forced myself to slow down so I would not miss one single detail.
The characters we well developed and they all were needed to bring the story to it's surprising and great conclusion.

3.5 stars rounded up, as this is a first novel. This book starts with a very tense and scary scene, and the bare bones of the plot are intriguing--the idea of a lawyer seemingly being stalked by a former client. Still, it's not too bad to figure out who the culprit really is, and there's a lot of unnecessary perspective changing (sometimes for just a few lines, to a minor character).
