Mitch Rapp #25

Double Tap

Vince Flynn’s #1 New York Times bestselling series continues the American Assassin storyline taking a young Mitch Rapp on his first deep cover mission in which he infiltrates a jihadi organization bent on unleashing a weapon of mass destruction—written by Don Bentley.

Mitch Rapp signed up to be an assassin.

A lone wolf who hunts and kills his nation’s enemies on their turf.

Now, he has a new mission.

When Mitch’s target—a Pakistani chemical weapons scientist for hire—is snatched from the streets of Verona, the American Assassin must penetrate the jihadi cell responsible for the brazen kidnapping before they can make use of the scientist’s deadly expertise.

But Mitch isn’t the only one interested in the scientist.

The Pakistani represents an existential threat. A threat that will fray alliances, force enemies to seek common ground, and resurrect long settled vendettas. As the events triggered by the kidnapping cascade out of control, Mitch Rapp must stop the chain reaction before the Middle East reaches critical mass.

The hand is fast
the target slow
another tango's down
watch the legend grow
of course it's Mitch
of course it's Rapp
the next adventure soon:
it's DOUBLE TAP

Federal and rural highways proudly wore the Ethel Merman badge in all fifty states of the Union before the pen of Dick Nixon fixed it for everyone on January 2, 1974. Ostensibly, ANYTHING GOES to 55 MPH was done to combat the 1973 oil crisis and the OPEC oil embargo. Since the Internet wouldn't see the light of day for roughly another 20 years, Americans improvised, using Citizen Band radios in their cars to communicate about gas availability and roadway speed traps. Long known to exploit a good thing while the going is good, Hollywood leveraged the CB craze and U.S. love for truckers in a slew of movies both for the big screen and TV all throughout the 70s. Making a run for the Arizona/ New Mexico border to ditch a corrupt and oppressive Sheriff, the gang led by Kris Kristofferson's character Rubber Duck drove in CONVOY like bats out of hell, following his tanker trailer full of volatile explosive chemicals to an explosive ending. A superb retro thriller about defying the odds, DOUBLE TAP brings Mitch Rapp back to the heyday of the 90s, also in a CONVOY from hell, in hell, and headed towards another hell. Chock-full of action, DC politics, CIA shenanigans, grit and bravado, DOUBLE TAP is a raging inferno of a book that'll take readers all the way back to the glorious geopolitical insanity of the 90s. And beyond.

Clandestine to the core, DOUBLE TAP never quite reveals in what year the story unspools in, leaving readers to stumble towards ecstasy in proper Kyle Reece tech-noir fashion. There are clues galore and the parameters are set in the span of NBA L.A. LAKERS star Vlade Divac's playing career and bracketed between the two World Trade Center bombing attacks eight years apart. Does it really matter? A little bit. Not quite an old old school spy thriller, there is talk of hacking, computers, databases and the internet in DOUBLE TAP, though the hottest item in Uncle Sam's arsenal is early twenty something Mitch Rapp. The memory of Lockerbie will probably never fade for Mitch as he lives in a zero sum world and deals with troubles and issues head on. DOUBLE TAP presents Rapp as newly minted Camp Peary Operator extraordinaire for the Omega Program. Obviously, Rapp's a great assassin, though being a button man for democracy hasn't even scratched the surface of his abilities. Anyone can kill people, Mitch Rapp, however, can do much much more. While the Program's Orion team deals with a never-ending crop of evil-doers, striking fear into the heart of America's enemies, DOUBLE TAP is a different mission and new ground for the crew. Venture into the belly of the beast, behind enemy lines deep in denied territory, working without support, prep teams, or a save-the-day kind of Quick Reaction Force. Like the boys from S.W.A.T. and in the words of Jim Street, this is nonetheless what they train for. And Mitch Rapp's the right man for the job.

In a modern world that is actively flirting with surveillance society status, velvet glove tyranny and powder puff authoritarianism of western democracies, DOUBLE TAP spends way too much time glazing the Mossad, a peculiar literary style that ended with David Morrell's THE LEAGUE OF NIGHT AND FOG a few months before Black Monday 1987. Irrespective, DOUBLE TAP is a thrilling achievement that lines up well with its twenty-four predecessors, making it even more peculiar why the narrative is littered with the phrases "Time to 'xyz'..." and "writ large", often creating awkward moments in the story. Hitting all the marks for modern spy craft entertainment, DOUBLE TAP goes the extra mile with axioms like "safe always beats sorry", that nothing in the intel biz is ever ironclad, and that the line between audacity and stupidity can be a bit blurry. Of course a Mitch Rapp vehicle through and through, DOUBLE TAP gives readers plenty of opportunity to cheer for Stan Hurley owning a big part of the story and the way he's written, reading like a mix between 1989's BATMAN and the character of the same name in AMERICAN ASSASSIN, verified badass and all Michael Keaton. Consummate spy craft MIL-fiction that ranks among the best of today and could proudly strut among giants of the 80s and 90s, DOUBLE TAP is a novel of skill, daring, and calm professionalism. Get DOUBLE TAP and reconnect with BBQs and ballgames; Mitch Rapp is back and here to preserve truth, justice, and the American Way.

Big thank you to Vince Flynn dot com, Don Bentley, Dave Brown & Emily Bestler for the ARC.

Absolutely loved this book and I truly hope Don stays on and continues to write and continue this path of the Mitch Rapp series. Don truly gets this series and the characters. The origin stories and the build up of characters and the original ideas are amazing. To see Stan in the field and to know what Rapp eventually becomes you can see how Mitch is exactly who Stan wanted him to be. The two men are so similar and cut from the same cloth. I love seeing Irene grow and learn on the job and become the amazing leader and character she is in the future books. The brilliance is to give us the backstories set in real history. It brings us to the story and catches our attentions. You can tell this all leads to Transfer of Power eventually and I hope Don can stay on to lead up to that! I loved this book and am excited for ride.

I’m thankful for the opportunity to serve as a Mitch Rapp Ambassador and to share my thoughts on Double Tap by Don Bentley. Special thanks to Don Bentley and Emily Bestler Books for the opportunity.

Double Tap is an outstanding addition to the Mitch Rapp series. The story begins with multiple storylines that are masterfully developed, steadily building tension as they move toward a conclusion that is explosive and wholly entertaining. Bentley delivers the action, suspense, and high-stakes intrigue that fans expect while keeping the pacing sharp from beginning to end.

Longtime fans will especially enjoy the return of several fan-favorite characters and the chance to follow their stories again. At the same time, readers who are new to the series can start here and still enjoy this thrilling, fast-paced novel. I give Double Tap 5 stars.

A nod back to Mitch Rapp in his early days and Don Bentley knocks this one out of the park! Classic Rapp in this one getting in the thick of an international incident while fighting to save the work with the help of Irene and Stan Hurley. The details in this one are the chefs kiss because the historical references are simply perfection. I particularly love the building of the Rapp character as insight into who he becomes in later books. It’s really quite brilliant. Thanks to Atria Books for the advance read.

Don Bentley is absolutely crushing it in his second book of continuance of the Mitch Rapp series. I love that we've gone back in time and get to revisit some of our favorite characters and experience more of what made Mitch Rapp into Mitch Rapp! The story keeps the pages turning from beginning to end. I hope we get more 'early days of Mitch Rapp' stories! No spoilers to share, you're going to have to read it for yourself. I've been lucky enough to be a Mitch Rapp Ambassador for, I think, seven books now, and I love getting to read before almost anyone else does; and then brag on how much I love the series. Go get your copy. You won't be disappointed. Kudos to Don Bentley!

Mitch Rapp books are always fun to read. He's always in some sort of no way can it happen situation, yet does what needs to be done. There is something about these early books that appeal to me. Mitch isn't quite so jaded and it's fun to see all the characters before how we know them. To see them as they are growing in their current roles. And of course things came down to the last minute.

Don Bentley has written to great story that back fills the Mitch Rapp legend. The story goes back in time when Mitch was a young assassin and moves him into the role of a field agent to stop a terrorist attack with Iraq's chemical weapons.

4.5 Stars ⭐️

As usual, I need to start off by saying that I am a huge fan of this series and have been reading it for many, many years - almost from the very beginning somewhere around 2006 - 2007. I’ve been here through Vince Flynn, Kyle Mills and now Don Bentley.

I really liked this book as a whole - how could you not? - but there were just a few things that stopped it from being the typical 5 star read for me.

One of the things that felt particularly different from what we are used to was the overall ….I’m not even sure what word to use here……but choppiness comes to mind. The storyline was really all over the place and I was often confused about WHO was speaking or WHERE they were logistically. I listened to this on audio (as is my normal method for this series) and it was particulary difficult to follow along with these transitions. And there were a lot and they changed quickly and often.

There were too many moving pieces in the plot - Hezbollah, the Israelis, the Italians, the Brits and of course the Americans. One of the other things that I was seriously disappointed by was that at the very end, I didn’t really have a clear enough idea of what had actually happened. It felt like most of the book was spent with the build up to and the setting up of those events, yet there was only one or maybe two small chapters used to encompass the whole mission and outcome (remember that I listened to this and didn’t read a print version so I’m going by memory and the WAY it felt).

This is, of course, a prequel. I’ve read a couple of reviews saying that when you go back 20 years of the MMC’s life, you already know what is going to happen (generally). This book will be slotted - time wise - somewhere between book 3 and book 4 and that means there are about 20 books that follow this one (time wise). We KNOW instinctively that Rapp is not going to die, and we know that the important secondary characters are going to be okay due to the fact that we KNOW what is going to happen in future years. So that might account a little bit for the feelings I had. Maybe….who knows? But that does make sense. It takes away a little bit from the total tension and anxiety levels of the kinetic direct actions sequences.

But you gave it 4.5 stars?

Yep. I sure did. When you are 25 books into a series and the series has been at the top of your favorites for almost 2 decades - that says something. While this wasn’t my favorite book, it was still an action packed, drama filled addition to the series and I am glad I read it. (Well, literally listened to it).

I have grown to love the character of Mitch Rapp and anytime, and I do mean ANYTIME, that I get a chance to jump back into his world for a new book you better believe I am going jump.

No hesitation at all. :)

We go back in time once again!!! Back to the earlier days of Rapp and gang!

Don Bentley has done it once again and absolutely delivers with Double Tap. One of the things I enjoyed most about this book is the return to the early days of Mitch Rapp. Going back in time allows readers to spend more time with legendary characters like Stan Hurley, Thomas Stansfield, Irene Kennedy, and Scott Coleman, making it feel like a reunion with old friends. For longtime fans of the series, that's a special experience. It feels like each time we get to know our beloved group even more and understand more what and how Rapp got to be, well Rapp!!!

The pacing is relentless from the opening pages forcing you not to put entry down until the very end! Bentley keeps the action moving while balancing espionage, intelligence operations, and geopolitical intrigue. This is the young Mitch Rapp at his best: fearless, relentless, highly skilled, and always willing to go where no one else would want to and can. The story captures everything that made readers fall in love with the character in the first place.

I especially appreciated the prequel setting. Rather than pushing the timeline forward, Bentley gives us another chance to see Rapp learning his craft and operating alongside some of the most iconic figures in the Mitch Rapp universe. It adds depth to the series and provides insight into relationships that longtime readers already know and appreciate.

If you're a Mitch Rapp fan, this is an easy five stars, absolutely loved this early entry addition to the Rapp series!! Fast-paced, exciting, nostalgic, and packed with classic Rapp action, Double Tap is a fantastic addition to the series and one of my favorite Don Bentley entries so far. Highly recommended to all!!! This is a must read!!!

Well done, Mr. Bentely, well done!! Now can we talk about you coming to North Carolina sometime??? :)

You all, get your copy as soon as you can, you DO NOT want to miss this one!!

I am very appreciative to have been chosen as a Mitch Rapp Ambassador for DOUBLE TAP, Don Bentley’s latest entry in the Mitch Rapp series. This book continues the Mitch Rapp origin story begun with AMERICAN ASSASSIN and continued by Bentley with DENIED ACCESS.

Bentley has done a really good job with the two throwback books that he has done, filling in the gaps of Mitch Rapp’s history to show how he has developed into the current character. It is also a lot of fun to revisit old characters like Stan Hurley and get a fuller picture of how Stan guided and trained Rapp into the lethal weapon that he became.

In DOUBLE TAP, Rapp is tasked with eliminating a rogue Pakistani chemical weapons scientist before his services can be utilized by a terrorist organization. Rapp discovers that other actors are involved when the man is kidnapped before Rapp can complete the job. Now Rapp has to get inside the organization, disrupt its plans, and find the rogue scientist, all while trying to separate friend from foe.

In my opinion, the young Mitch Rapp in this book is exactly as I would picture him to be from Vince Flynn’s early novels. Don Bentley does a fantastic job of capturing Flynn’s idea of the character. The action is fast paced and Rapp is challenged at every turn.

Thank you to Emily Bestler Books and Don Bentley for the opportunity to read an Advance Reader Copy of DOUBLE TAP. If you are a Mitch Rapp fan, you are going to love DOUBLE TAP.

For fans of Mitch Rapp, this prequel is a must-read. Double Tap provides an early look into Rapp's career as he is tasked with stopping a chemical weapons attack. It has all the fast-paced, action-packed thrills typical of Rapp novels, but it also has a few hidden gems. Meet Donatella for the first time. Get a look at Scott Coleman in action as Commander of SEAL Team 6. And find out how Rafique Aziz initially lands on Rapp's radar.

For those who are not yet Mitch Rapp fans, go buy all the books and read them in publication order (start with Transfer of Power). By the time you get to the prequels, you will know why fans keep coming back for more.

Thank you to the publishers and vinceflynn(dot)com for selecting me as a Mitch Rapp ambassador again. I was provided an advanced reader copy and asked to review the book.

This story takes us back in the Mitch Rapp universe. Excellent storyline as usual to be expected from Don Bentley. Lots of action and an exciting plot. This one takes Mitch away from his profession as an assassin and put him into a new role keeping America safe from its enemies. Fast read.

I was chosen as an ambassador so received an advance copy of the book to read and review. Thanks to the Vince Flynn estate for this honor.

The best keep getting better.

First of all I wanted to highlight my appreciation for being selected as an Ambassador. This is my third time receiving a book early for review. While my review is after the publication date it did finish this book early and loved every minute of it.

This book has an excellent pace and builds on the legacy’s of those who came before Don Bentley. He creates a story that fills in the gaps and pushes the narrative forward. I love how he created these prequel stories of the early years of Mitch. I cannot wait to see where the series goes next!

Mitch Rapp never disappoints! Vince Flynn created the much beloved “American Assassin” hero, and Don Bentley has, once again, proven that he “has the chops” to keep the legacy alive, by adding another outstanding edition to the series. Double Tap is a high-energy page turner, with twists and turns that keep you guessing, and make for a very entertaining read. Highly recommended!

Mitch Rapp is back as Don Bentley takes readers into the early years of his career. This time, Mitch is tasked with eliminating a Pakistani scientist. Before he can complete the mission, however, the scientist is kidnapped by a terrorist cell that plans to force him to use his expertise to unleash more terror on the world. Mitch must go undercover, infiltrate the organization, eliminate the scientist, and stop the terrorists before their plans can become reality.

There is a lot to like about Double Tap. First and foremost, Stan Hurley, Mitch’s mentor, gets plenty of time in the field. It was a real treat to see Stan in action, and Bentley does an excellent job showcasing his confidence, experience, and swagger throughout the story. Several scenes highlight what makes Stan such a great character, especially the helicopter sequence near the end of the book. Watching the master operate in his element while assisting Mitch along the way was one of the novel’s highlights.

The story flows well, with enough action and intrigue to keep readers engaged from beginning to end. The pace of the final 75 pages is absolutely relentless. Once the story hit its climax, I couldn’t put the book down. I also continue to enjoy Bentley’s exploration of Mitch’s past, filling in key pieces of his backstory and showing how he developed into the legendary character fans know today.

The good news for new readers is that you can pick up this book without feeling lost, even if you haven’t read previous entries in the series. That said, if you haven’t read any of the Mitch Rapp novels, what are you waiting for? Get started.

This was an easy five-star read for me. Bentley’s second contribution to the Mitch Rapp series lives up to the high standards that Vince Flynn established and that the series has maintained over the years.

Don Bentley returns with his third installment in the Mitch Rapp universe, and it definitely does not disappoint! For his first three books Bentley has chosen to write stories from the early days of the Orion program, bringing back beloved characters like Hurley and Stansfield, as well as a young and upcoming Irene Kennedy, and of course a young, exuberant, yet to be refined Mitch Rapp. Not only has it been refreshing to revisit these early days, but Bentley has also provided a seamless transition from Vince Flynn to his own contributions by writing in a style and "voice" that is very much like that of Flynn.

A Pakistani chemical weapon scientist is kidnapped. Mitch Rapp finds some unlikely allies in the hunt. Stan Hurley is active in the field. Readers get baited and the hook is set in the very first chapter of the book. The ensuing battle between reader and chapters is intense and extremely rewarding. At the end of the day, Bentley has another huge success on his hands and thriller fans everywhere are much better off for it. This is an adventure that is not to be missed! I can't wait to see where Bentley takes this franchise next as he continues as the steward of the brand.

I was selected as a Mitch Rapp Ambassador in exchange for my thoughts on the book. Many thanks to Emily Bestler Books and Atria for this honor!

Don Bentley is the latest shepherd of Vince Flynn's Mitch Rapp Series. For those of us that having been following since Vince Flynn's stewardship and then Kyle Mills and now Don Bentley, we know that the Flynn family makes the best possible choices to carry on the legacy after Vince's untimely death. Don has a phenomenal background and it comes out in his writing. Don was a well known published author before he took the reins. And now can be easily described as famous.
He came out of the chute and marked it! He is still holding on! There is a genius in his time leaps forwards and back that shows how well he knows Rapp and his "style". Nudging Rapp into the new world by revealing his traits and thinking or reminding us of his roots, the recklessness that a young assassin displayed and sometimes the older one relives.
Thanks Don for carrying our protagonist forward, growing his character and how this becomes painfully-acquired wisdom. Rapp has demons. He has history. He loves America and will relentlessly hunt down and destroy America's enemies with extreme prejudice.
Put Bentley on your thriller genre rotation! Don't miss this one! Don't miss any of them!

I am loving these new Mitch Rapp stories. This one is a step back in time, set in Iraq while Saddam Hussein was ruling there. In it, Rapp is chasing a Pakistani scientist who specializes in chemical weapons. The Iraqi government was using poison gas on its enemies. The many different groups, the CIA, Israel, Hezbollah, the Kurds, all want those chemical weapons, but for different reasons. Rapp finds his mission has changed from merely killing the scientist to destroying the gas before it can be used. Mission creep can be annoying.
I enjoyed the story. This was when Mitch was still feeling his way into his job. It's not enough to be an assassin. True, he was not ever going to be an agent with a network of spies to run. He wasn't interested in reconnaissance or intelligence gathering. However, he was beginning to learn he needed to pick up some of those skills if he planned to be an assassin long term. This is the time period, before he became a legend, where he started to understand that.
I do recommend this entry in the Mitch Rapp saga. If you're already a fan, you know what I mean. If you aren't, read it and learn.
I want to thank the publishers who gave me this book through the Mitch Rapp Ambassador program. I voluntarily read and reviewed this book. I savored it while I read.

This is my first Mitch Rapp novel. For those who’ve never read any of the previous 27 books I don’t think “Double Tap” is a great place to start the series. Indeed, it is a “prequel” written by the successor to author Vince Flynn, Don Bentley. “Double Tap” has definite strengths. But it also has flaws, IMHO.

The time appears to be the early 1990’s. The first Gulf War has been fought. Mitch is a secret assassin for the US government, assigned to “take out” a scientist who specializes in WMDs. As the novel progresses, the stakes become higher and higher, compelling Mitch and a host of other characters to change their objectives.

As to the novel’s strengths, Don Bentley seems to know, very well, his subject matter. He writes convincingly about espionage and military matters. And he’s able to create scenes filled with tension and suspense.

However, that tension and suspense really doesn’t come into play until the final third of the novel. Many times, I found the first two-thirds of the novel to be confusing, somewhat dull, and filled with digression. Too often, there’d be a sentence or paragraph meant to move the plot forward, only to be followed by several paragraphs of explanation. Moreover, the first two-thirds revealed very little about Mitch Rapp. So little, that I was left wondering why he’d become such a popular character.

As I said in the beginning, if you haven’t read any of the previous Mitch Rapp novels, this is probably not the best one to start with.

This continually is one of the best series out there. Kyle Mills picked up right where Vince Flynn left off and Don Bentley continues the story amazingly each time. With his third addition to the series, we are once again taken to the early days of Rapp as part of the Orion program.
Rapp is in Italy, on a mission to eliminate a Pakistani scientist. But it does not go according to plan. And he has to adapt on the fly, infiltrating a terrorist cell to figure out what is happening and trying to determine who all the players are. And stop a potential terrorist attack on Israel.
I am loving that Bentley has decided to finish the prequels. The way he is able to take the history that we already know from reading all of the Rapp novels and build a story around it has been fascinating to read. His introduction of beloved characters so we can see a little more backstory is welcomed and appreciated.
The action in Double Tap is exciting, heart-stopping and gripping. Bentley has Rapp pushed to the limits once again and we are all the better for reading it.
I look forward to the next installment. Not so patiently.

#MitchRappIsBack in #DoubleTap Bridging the work of Vince Flynn’s series, and American Assassin prequel with the recent work of Kyle Mills, Don Bentley, following up on Denied Access introduces us to multiple characters who appear in the series. Incorporating their back stories within nonstop Mitch Rapp action set in Europe and the Middle East, Rapp’s strengths and motivations jump off the page. Bentley does a great job taking us back to the 90s and the beginnings of the War on Terror, throwing Rapp into the “belly of the beast” in Hezbollah and Hussein’s Iraq. Whether you are a fan of the series or new to the thriller genre, you will not be disappointed!

A Gripping, Action-Packed Thriller!

Double Tap by Don Bentley is an outstanding thriller that grabs you from the very beginning and doesn’t let go. The pacing is relentless, the action is intense, and the twists keep you turning the pages to find out what happens next.

Bentley does an excellent job creating a story that feels authentic while bring back all the characters you can genuinely get invested in. There’s plenty of suspense, danger, and unexpected turns without sacrificing the human side of the story.

If you enjoy military thrillers, high-stakes action, and fast-paced storytelling, Double Tap is definitely worth reading. I couldn’t put it down!
