Coloniile engleze de pe fațada atlantică a Americii de Nord nu aveau nici un guvern, nici o autoritate colectivă și nici o forță militară care să le servească. Nu beneficiau de nicio apărare coerentă împotriva amenințărilor externe, cum ar fi cele venite din partea triburilor native. Cea mai stringentă nevoie colectivă ținea de reglementarea comerțului, dar acea chestiune nu era în mâinile lor, ci depindea de Londra, unde nevoile și interesele lor erau nereprezentate și în mare măsură neglijate. Pentru englezi coloniile erau simple avanposturi comerciale. Dar coloniile erau unite de nevoia de a reprima împotrivirea indigenilor în fața expansiunii lor teritoriale și de a-și menține o diversitate independentă de coroana engleză.
Dacă crearea Statelor Unite moderne ar putea fi pusă pe seama unui singur eveniment, acela este Războiul de Șapte Ani, dintre 1758 și 1763. Marea Britanie a câștigat războiul, dar a ieșit îndatorată. Așa că a impus noi taxe vamale coloniilor. În noaptea de 16 decembrie 1773 o bandă de 60 de indivizi dintr-o grupare numită Fii Libertății s-au deghizat în nativi din tribul Mohawk, cu topoare și cu "chipuri de culoare aramei" și au dar fuga până la corăbiile cu ceai acostate în portul Boston, s-au suit la bordul lor și a azvârlit în port 300 de baloturi cu ceai. Acțiunea a ajuns să fie cunoscută drept Partida de Ceai din Boston. Puțini americani erau antibritanici, dar erau insistenți în privința autonomiei fiscale. Revoluția Americană a fost declanșată de taxarea fără reprezentare.
După câstigarea Războiului de Independență trebuia creat un stat. Dar ce fel de stat? State Unite sau Stat Unit? Într-o perioadă în care statele continuau să fie în mare parte monarhii discreționare, neîncorsetate de niciun fel de constituție, America își câstigase dreptul de a avea o constituție scrisă și era decisă să o pună în practică. Însă esența acesteia trebuia să fie compromisul, nicidecum sabia. Omul din spatele Constituției Americane este James Madison. Constituția lui Madison și Declarația de Independență a lui Jefferson au devenit pietrele de temelie ale culturii politice americane. Acestea le-au oferit americanilor o credință laică.

Refreshing read in times of shifting geopolitical relations. Every once in a while, it is worth investing time in learning about the history of the world’s major players. In the case of Jenkins, he has timed his new short history of the United States (‘From Tea Party to Trump’) rather well. The book teaches us several important lessons. First, the United States has come a very long (and often bloody) way before stepping onto the world stage roughly a century ago. In other words, nothing lasts forever. Second, U.S. administrations have often shown isolationist tendencies, also when it comes to Europe. So, what’s new? Third, since the end of the Cold War, the military-industrial complex has been in constant search of new conflicts. Sounds familiar? Take these three lessons into account, and consider where we find ourselves today. RF

I enjoyed this book very much. It served a purpose as filling in gaps in my knowledge and reminding me of things I’d forgotten as well as making me think.
It’s written in an engaging, pacy style and focus is on how (despite the checks and balances afforded by the constitution) the whims of a president can affect the country’s direction. The question of the USA‘s role on the global stage and how much larger / richer nations should actively intervene in foreign affairs is considered and there‘s no easy answer to this.
Given the USA‘s 250th and the current state pf geopolitics mean this a timely and valuable read.

A fine short history for the layman.
It suffers from a lack of nuance, which is to be expected in a short history. Many of the points that Jenkins makes are valid up to a point, whilst others seem very questionable.
Unfortunately there are also a few errors - including that the infamous photo of US citizens fleeing Saigon was at the US Embassy (it was, I believe, a USAID/CIA building) and that Trump deported an American to an Ecuadorian prison, when it was a prison in El Salvador.
Being quite widely read on many of the subjects covered, I feel a lot was missed that would have enhanced a reader's understanding - for instance, that George W. Bush believed that Saddam Hussein must have had WMDs, as he couldn't rationalise Saddam's behaviour if not. These could have been short sentences, so not massively impacting the length of the book. I also feel his part on Theodore Roosevelt was wide of the mark.
I'd recommend for a newcomer with an interest in American history, as it's quite well-written and accessible, but anyone already familiar should avoid and focus on more in-depth, analytical books.

A good read, written in an accessible style. It was ‘put-down-able’, hence the long duration of the read.
Does not assume too much prior knowledge. I learnt something about presidents that I have never studied but who are significant individuals, for example: Nixon. It does what it says it will: provide a ‘short history’.
I found the sections on American society most engaging. Less attention is paid to the ‘counter-culture’ of the sixties in the history books. I’d like to read more about this.
I wonder how in the future the final chapter might be revised… I’m finishing the book now, in the context of Trump’s war on Iran.
Could be improved with more explanation of the ‘college system’. I understand its dominance in elections but this seems crucial, given the current presidency.
Book bought with a gift voucher from a grateful student. I read it alongside others and determined to finish it during the Easter holidays.

This was a class read.
As someone who loves American sport, country music and culture, I’ve always been interested in where it all comes from… and for the large part, it’s us!
I already knew bits of that anyway, but learning it in more detail was fascinating.
This is a great read for someone like me who wants to know a history of America without getting into the nitty-gritty of every era in its entirety.
It has given me a new interest in some parts I otherwise wouldn’t have learnt about, and a deeper interest in other parts I knew some about.
It has helped me pin point other books that are more specific on different parts of US history, for which I will find books I can read on those parts.

Picked up at a station bookshop before a long journey. Kept me engaged for the entire 6 hours, and then finished afterwards at home. Nothing really new learned, but it was an engaging read, well written, and a recommendation for anyone who might want an overview of US history in a comfortable and informative style.

A very well written and interesting short history of the US. In 28 chapters ( each of 10-12 pages) the author covers the essential aspects of the US from pre 1492 through to 2025 and the 2nd Presidency of DJT . Despite the brevity of each chapter Simon Jenkins highlights and analyses the key points in the development of the country in a very fluent and informative way .

Very informative, from a historical standpoint.
However, on recent history the author goes out of his way to subvert the sitting President's policy and deny its merits. Also an unnecessary focus on race relations, while simply glossing over the great forthbringings of the nation during its relatively short existance.

Concise but excellent survey of US history. This manages to capture enough detail to aid a broad understanding of US history without getting bogged down. Great introduction to the topic and makes me want to investigate certain events in more detail.

Има си известна разлика между „Кратка история на Европа“ на Саймън Дженкинс, която излезе на български през 2019 г., след като я открих почти случайно в забутано каре на един каталог, и „Кратка история на Америка“, която се появи наскоро – тъкмо преди честванията за 250-годишнината от обявяването на независимостта на САЩ (една от многото държави по земното кълбо, която чества като национален празник измъкването си от хватката на Великобритания). Ако тази за Европа се свеждаше само до гръбнак от основни събития поради нужда да се обеме цели хилядолетия сложна и претрупана със събития история, то тази за Америка дава възможност както да се разкаже вкратце всичко важно от историческа гледна точка, така и да се поразсъждава какво точно обединява постоянно нарастващия брой щати, какво (преимуществено) ги разделя, как изкуството на компромиса е това, което от самото начало дава живот на това причудливо държавно образувание, и за сложните течения и противоборства в американската политика, които водят до съвременното жестоко разделение с всички знайни последствия. “If you’re going to be boring, at least be brief” could be Jenkin’s motto. At its best, it’s a dry, thinly researched summary of key events in American history; at its worst it’s misleading and skewed. Jenkins struggles to really understand the country and there’s a vein of English superciliousness throughout - Jenkins seems to think if America could just adopt BBC socialism and give up their big hats and silly guns, America could finally earn his respect.
