The Bunker: Part I

Rate this book
Deep in the heart of Tuscany in the Val d'Orcia, a powerful Italian industrialist with ultra nationalist roots has built a secret underground bunker.

Only he knows why.

Only four can be allowed in.

And only one can let them out again. When? That's the terrifying question.

While most dystopian science fiction focuses on what happens during or after the apocalypse, The Bunker plunges you into the nail-biting events that lead up to it. This is pre-apocalyptic fiction at its most riveting.

A short tease. A bunker is constructed underground that will support 5 people for around 50 years. The catch is that once they enter the doors will only open for 24 hours every 15 years. Is the bunker a trick to trap the family underground or does the builder really know the precise time that a war will destroy all life on the surface. I guess we have to buy the next book to find out. Is the tease enough to entice me to bite?

This is a FANTASTIC short story. Mr. Khalifa grabs you from the opening sentence and holds your attention all the way through. The book touches on social issues, but not so much as to distract you from the story. This guy's father-in-law wants him dead, and the only thing prolonging his life for the moment are his children, though he will need help in the near future if he wants to survive, from the man he hates so much.

This is a wonderful build up to what sounds like a fantastic postapoc story. There are hints to something much larger than a simple underground oasis.

The writing is excellent, the editing superb. I did not find myself being taken out of the story by grammar, punctuation, or spelling mistakes. Nice attention to detail.

I am very much looking forward to reading more!
