🥃 ARC Review: I HATE MY BOSS
She Got Cancelled. He Got Complicated. Neither One Got Simple.

Author: Vixa Vaughn | Genre: Corporate Thriller + Romance
Rating: ⭐️⭐️⭐️½ | Spice: 🌶️🌶️🌶️ (Tension-forward heat)

🥃 The Pour
Imagine watching your entire career burn down in 30,000-view increments while your phone vibrates off the table with legal notices. That’s Maya Ellis’s Tuesday. Vixa Vaughn delivers a corporate thriller-romance with genuine teeth and sharp dialogue, centered on a woman who built her own case for innocence rather than waiting for an apology. When a mysterious text offers anonymous work to the desperate-but-competent Maya, she enters the orbit of River Ravenna—a venture capitalist who hides behind curtains and penthouse glass. It’s a high-stakes game where the skills used to "cancel" Maya become the only thing that can save River.

🥃 What I Savored
The Setup: A cancelled strategist hired anonymously to fix a corporate crisis using the exact skills weaponized against her? Pure structural elegance.

The Dialogue: The banter has real crackle. Maya and River don’t just have "misunderstandings"; they have earned, ideological friction.

The Villain: Eleanor Wheaton is a top-tier corporate predator. She’s chilling in that specific way only a smiling board member can be.

The Stakes: The "transparency arc" actually costs the characters something. Refreshingly, the story acknowledges that accountability isn't free.

🥃 What I Side-Eyed
The Romance/Thriller Balance: Around the midpoint, the boardroom drama swallows the love story whole. I needed more "being" and less "strategizing."

Emotional Depth: We get plenty of Strategist Maya, but Heart-on-her-sleeve Maya went a bit quiet in the second act.

The Subplots: Arthur, the investigative journalist neighbor, felt more like a plot device than a person—picked up and dropped whenever the pacing needed a nudge.

🥃 The Finish
I Hate My Boss is a punchy, intelligent read featuring a heroine you’ll actually root for and a hero who finally learns that "control" and "leadership" aren't synonyms. While the romance could have used a bit more oxygen in the middle, the payoff is satisfying, sharp, and worth the anonymous meeting.

Recommended for: Fans of corporate stakes, cancelled heroines who bite back, and dialogue that cuts deeper than a contract termination.

🥃 The Drink Pairing: The Corporate Manhattan
For the woman building windows where walls used to be.

2 oz Bulleit Rye (Sharp edges, deliberate)

1 oz Sweet Vermouth (The compromise neither wanted to make)

2 dashes Angostura Bitters (The bitter cost of accountability)

1 Luxardo Cherry (Maya Ellis deserves the good stuff)

Method: Stir over ice, strain into a chilled coupe. No shortcuts. The whole point is precision.

Corporate Espionage

May's career crashed and burned in record time. River offers her a lifeline, but she has to be invisible. This story off okay, but there was too much business jargon. The climax was so goid but some parts just rattled on and on. Too much mental conversation. I wanted to get on with the story.
