I enjoyed reading poems as memories that come and go. The idea the our memories are not often remembered in chronological order is so true. Our minds tend to bring to the surface them as a time of great emotion: be it hurtful, sad, angry, joyful, comforting, happy. All of them together are our collective memory and they come and go as they please.
The author uses this idea to bring forward her life, a memoir in a poetic journey. Loved it!
I so so so loved this book. A deeply human story of navigating life, and finding your way. Jessica Amos takes you on a journey through her childhood (and what follows) by sharing moments. Together these weave her highly personal story in a vulnerable and authentic way. The way she writes makes you feel like you’re with her in every moment. And, importantly, makes you reflect on your own life’s moments. Whether or not you recognize yourself in the facts, for sure you’ll recognize yourself in your humanity. Some moments are heart breaking, others hilarious or even ‘normal’ but all are authentic, human, and deeply touching.
I've likened Amos' work to a polaroid film frenzy. Snapping shots. Shaking them into realization. When the images are finally revealed they still remain a little fuzzy---impressions of times, places, and emotions that are no longer part of a linear telling. It's as if the very structure instructs the reader to loosen the grip on the stories we think we know--that we tell ourselves and others.
