I loved the details she put into the book. The FMC Harper is a bada$$. When I think of her all I picture is her asking for forgiveness rather than permission. Absolutely loved this character and that's not even talking about the MMCs....you won't want to sit on this one. Go read it!

Im so here for Harper. This right here put me through all the emotions. CY brings you into this world and your so emersed into it, its like a movie being played out in front of you. You have a bad ass FMC who kicks doors down and asks questions later. She's on a road of discovery who/what she is. Then you have a big bad that threatens everything around her and the icing on the cake not 1 but 2 of the BEST book boyfriends you could imagine Jordan (also king of the shifters) and Soren ( Vampire regent) and yes by the end of this book you dont know who your rooting for. My jaw is still on the floor after that ending. 10/10 HIGHLY RECOMMEND

Harper Rayne? She’s not your typical “strong female lead.” She’s a weapon. Calculated, relentless, and just unstable enough to make you wonder if she’s the hero… or the eventual final boss. Watching her unravel while leveling up at the same time is wildly addictive.
And then we have the men:
Jordan brings loyalty, power, and that grounded, ride-or-die energy that makes you feel safe… until you remember he’s a literal shapeshifter king.
Soren? He’s the slow-burn menace in a perfectly tailored suit. Ancient, composed, and absolutely dripping with danger. Every scene with him feels like standing too close to a blade and pretending you won’t get cut.
The dynamic between all three is electric. Not messy for drama’s sake… but layered, tense, and charged with purpose. Alliances feel fragile. Trust feels expensive. And every interaction carries weight.

Brilliant, absolutely brilliant!
I went in to this completely blind, not too sure what it was about or if it was even my type of book, but with an open mind.
I haven’t read a book this good in a long while.
Rayne is such a strong main character and so fierce it was refreshing to read.
Jordan is absolutely my favourite (I’ve always been team Jacob, if you know you know!) I love their friendship dynamic and what he brings to the story.
Soren is an absolute beaut of a Character, all sharpe edges and no nonsense.
The story unfolds slowly with little gems slowly woven into the story line that keeps you hooked.
Would I recommend? Absolutely 100%

I really liked this book. Love a strong FMC and Harper Rayne is a total badass. The dark and gritty modern setting pulled me in and the slow burning tension between Harper and the two MMC’s, Jordan (king of the Jaguar shifters) and Soren (vampire Regent of the SW Territory) was hot and kept me invested and hoping for more. Although this first book was low spice, there’s definitely a will they/won’t they love triangle thing happening between our main characters. My smut loving heart is hoping we’ll get lucky and things will develop into a spicy full blown MMF relationship in the second book🤞🤞
This book had it all. Vampires, shifters, witches, magic, slow burning tension, a prophecy. The writing was great and the characters, storyline, and paranormal elements in this book were awesome. Thankfully it didn’t end on a nail biting cliffhanger, but the characters are definitely at a crossroads with so much more of their story to unfold. I can’t wait to see where the author takes us in book 2 of this series.

Really strong , badass, FMC whose an agent policing the supernatural.
No spice but def some tension and make out scenes. I really liked the story with its action and just the spiral that happens with Rayne trying to come to grips with what's happening to her. Kinda has a love triangle start going on which I was like ahhh at some parts but overall this is really well written and I look forward to more from this author as well as book 2. One thing I would suggest in this book is when there's texts or mind communication that we have some sorta different font but other than that I really liked this book.

This book was one hell of a ride in the absolute best way. Gritty, raw, and completely gripping, it throws you headfirst into a world of supernatural politics and doesn’t let go. Set in Phoenix, the atmosphere felt incredibly immersive, and you can tell the author did their research. From the very first line, I was locked in, and it held me captive all the way to the end.
Harper Rayne is an exceptional FMC. She is raw, layered, and an absolute badass. As the youngest enforcement agent in the Supernatural Protection Agency, she proves again and again that she belongs, even with a powerful secret simmering just beneath the surface. She’s strong without being untouchable, and that balance made her feel incredibly real.
Now let’s talk about the one who owns my soul, Soren. This man is elite. A sexy, broody, morally grey vampire with unmatched touch her and die energy, he stole every single scene he was in. There’s a quiet intensity to him that makes every interaction feel charged, and the way he moves around Harper? Obsessed. I need more of him immediately.
Jordan, Harper’s best friend and a fiercely loyal shapeshifter, brings heart and grounding to the story. He’s protective, caring, and would absolutely burn the world down for her but still manages to bring lightness and humor when it’s needed most. Their friendship added such a strong emotional core. Even when it is in question about the possibility of more.
And then there’s the wider cast of agents, vampires, shapeshifters, witches. Each one adding depth and texture to Harper’s story. No one feels flat; everyone has a purpose, and it makes the world feel alive and layered.
The banter deserves its own moment because it is top tier. Sharp, witty, and perfectly timed, it cuts through the grit and tension in the best way. The dialogue between Harper, Soren, and Jordan had me hooked just as much as the plot. It’s that perfect mix of humor, sarcasm, tension, and underlying emotion that keeps you glued to the page.

I loved this book! It pulls you in from page one and does not let go! There are so many good characters that you can't help but love and connect with all of them. You have the badass FMC, Harper Rayne. She is the kind of woman who doesn't take anything from any one and protects the people she loves with her life. She's a fighter who refuses to give up. You have Soren the sexy, broody, touch her and die, blonde, blue eyed vampire regent. Jordan the fun, caring, best friend, I'll burn down the world for you, sexy jaguar shifter. These are just some of my favorites. There are more that | love too!
There's witches, ancient beings full of power, prophecy and vampire challenges.
This book is full of action
and fun!
Harper must grow and learn how to accept what/who she is becoming. The decisions she makes will be what decides the fate of the world. I highly recommend.

I absolutely loved this story, literally devoured this book in 24 hours! From page one this book sucked me in. This new romantasy series is amazing and im so ready for the next book!

Rayne & Ruin is a gripping urban fantasy that delivers a strong mix of supernatural politics, action, and emotion. Harper Rayne is the FMC she is a badass and relentless enforcement agent tasked with keeping vampires, shifters, and witches in line, and watching her grow through the chaos while uncovering hints of a hidden power in her blood was easily one of the highlights. The dynamic between the MMCs Jordan, the loyal shifter king, and Soren, the ancient and dangerous vampire regent, adds depth and tension, while the banter and side characters bring the story to life. The plot is fast-paced with solid world-building and an ending that keeps you hooked, though it leans heavily into setting up what’s next—leaving you wanting more!

Absolutely loved this story - It was fast paced with great characters and the story development was superb🤩 I will certainly be trying to read more about Rayne and her adventures moving forward.
I don’t want to say too much in this review and spoil it for others but essentially Harper Rayne is a law enforcement agent for S.P.A. They are the agency that govern all the other “monsters” out there…anything supernatural. The main characters are Harper, Jordan and Soren. Jordan is a jaguar shifter and the king of his species and Soren is a very old vampire and Regent which means he’s the ruler of the vampires in his territory🙌
I can’t wait for more…I received an advanced copy and voluntarily leave my honest review❤️🩹

As someone who does not often read Urban Fantasy, I LOVED this book. I couldn't put it down.
The characters were so well written, the plot kept me on my toes and the setting was so descriptive I could picture it in my mind.
This book is 1000% worth the read and I can't wait for the next one!

This was a fast-paced, action-packed read that kept me fully invested from beginning to end. With magic, vampires, shifters, special forces, and political intrigue woven throughout, there’s always something happening to keep the momentum going.
Harper was such a refreshing FMC... a badass this strong and capable, emotionally driven, but never frustrating. She makes tough choices and fully owns them, and her growth throughout the story feels authentic. I especially appreciated that she never falls into the “why me” trope despite everything she faces.
Jordan and Soren are complete opposites, and their dynamic definitely gives Jacob vs. Edward energy...each bringing their own distinct appeal that makes it impossible not to be drawn to both in completely different ways.
The bonus chapters from their POVs were a fantastic addition, and I’m really hoping they hint at what’s to come in book two. I’ll definitely be on the lookout for book two to see what’s next for this trio!

May 6, 2026The lines are pretty cheesey for me. The human enforser has more physical strength than vampires ⁉️ How does that work? The dialogue she has with those supernatural creatures felt like one from a bad movie. Didn't make sense to me. Sorry to DNF

This urban fantasy with atmospheric writing, solid world building, an array of supernatural and fantastical beings is such a unique read that had me HOOKED. It’s filled with action, politics and an FMC, Harper Rayne, who is wholly and unapologetically herself. Diving into the underbelly of the supernatural world, you are thrown into a mystery in which our FMC is aided by her loyal best friend and shape shifter king Jordan and the seemingly cold and unfeeling vampire regent Soren. This is a must high stakes read that will take you on an unexpected and wild ride!

But seriously, probably one of my favorite things about this book is her titles! They were top tier! Villain Lairs and Naked Cats! Abs and in the Afterlife?! Just brilliant!
This book was giving me Crescent City vibes with her take on urban fantasy. You have vampires, shape shifters, witches all set in Phoenix. But seriously, probably one of my favorite things about this book is her titles! They were top tier! Villain Lairs and Naked Cats! Abs and in the Afterlife?! Just brilliant!
This book was giving me Crescent City vibes with her take on urban fantasy. You have vampires, shape shifters, witches all set in Phoenix. This was such a good urban fantasy. I liked how it went straight to action and it wasn't slow paced at the start like some books are. However there were some parts where it was hard to keep track of all the people and who was doing what. I definitely want to read more about these characters!

This is a great book. Harper Rayne’s story is iconic. I’ll talk more about it in a minute, but, I know, not everyone reads the full review. So, if you are one of those people I will just say this. Prepare yourself for the Ruin. This book leaves a mark. When you get to the end, even though it’s been 500 plus pages, you will want more, and that wanting will sting.
Whatever you expect going into Rayne and Ruin by reading the blurb, checking the tropes and content advisory, get ready to have your expectations blown away. Yes, this first book in the Harper Rayne Chronicles is a dark urban fantasy romance. Harper is the fiercest FMC as an agent who keeps the supernatural forces in Phoenix in check. There are two magnetic MMCs, Jordan the loyal, caring, shifter king and Soren the ancient, powerful, vampire Regent. (Do yourself a favor and go to cybenton.com and check out the character art. I mean it. Go. This will be here when you get back.) The story is dense with action, politics, lore, and longing.
What makes this book exceptional is its author. C.Y. goes beyond great story telling. She is a wordsmith and an artisan. She paints Phoenix after dark with a film noir brush. The dialog, spoken and internal, hits repeatedly like the strong beat of your favorite song. Emotions are evoked like the flavor profile of a slowly simmered sauce.
All of these elements of perfected prose are not something that is in the forefront of your brain while you’re reading. You’re in it with Harper while you’re turning pages. I picked up on Benton’s artistry when I noticed I had highlighted about 25 percent of this book and written in the margins at least once a chapter. (This is on an e-reader if any of you are worried because the physical book is stunning.)
I started taking notes with The Dedication - “For the women who walked through fire and refused to be consumed by it.” I didn’t stop until after the About the Author page - “C.Y. Benton writes dark fantasy romance with dangerous worlds, sharp heroines, and the kind of ruin that changes everything.”

I read this book in conjunction with Before the Ruin, which is a prequel to this series. It came out today!!
Rayne and Ruin focuses more on Rayne as a main character. She comes into town like a whirlwind and seems to be a magnet for trouble and for men - of all forms. She's brutal and strong, and she has to learn how to handle this new emergence of power in the city, basically singlehandedly, as a supernatural agent.
Thankfully, she has Jordan, king of the shapeshifters, and Soren, the vampire regent of the area. Between the three of them, they make a really interesting set of people with a common need and a common goal, but not personalities that necessarily mesh well. 😂
I loved Rayne as a standalone character without the men supporting her. She's so caring while having her own emotional turmoil going on.
I was so glad to see her going to Thessaly! (Thessaly's kind of one of my favs over these two books. 😍) I love her witchiness and the way she says it like it is.
If you like powerful FMCs, the Sookie Stackhouse Books, or the Vampire Diaries/Buffy the Vampire Slayer but more amped up vibe, you may like this book.

Rayne & Ruin is an astonishingly remarkable urban fantasy about the fight between good and evil, with the “chosen one” in the form of heroine Harper Rayne who straddles both sides and struggles to find a balance between the two. Novel is anchored by a romantic subplot that never overshadows, that provides tension to challenge Harper to grow. The emotional mainstay of the book lies in Harper’s failure to enact complete self-acceptance, and this transformational arc underpins her choices throughout the story.
One of the noticeable things about Rayne & Ruin is Benton’s love for strong female mentorship, and she espoused this through the creation of warm, solid and three-dimensional female characters who surround Harper and support her with unconditional love and guidance.
There is notably the powerful Southern witch, Thessaly, who owns the Salt & Silver shop that Harper visits repeatedly; Kay, Harper’s grandmother who raised her and Harper’s own mother who has passed away.
The underlying struggle with Harper’s own identity undeniably runs through the book like the grand Mississippi River, and you can see her inner strength solidifying as she begins to forgive herself and her mom, and learn to lean into the female lineage in her ancestry instead of approaching the world as a lone wolf. Harper’s arc and transformation are both beautiful and satisfying, resulting in Rayne & Ruin becoming an unforgettable story about a woman “who walked through fire and refused to be consumed by it.”
I await with bated breath for the continuation of the Harper Rayne Chronicles and will remain “ruined” until I can get my hands on Book 2!

Being from Phoenix, I was so excited to read a book set there and that ended up being one of my favorite parts. I loved recognizing places around the Valley of the Sun. It made the whole story feel more fun and personal.
This book jumps straight into the action, which I really liked. Harper is tough, sarcastic, and easy to root for. I also enjoyed Jordan and Soren (for very different reasons 👀), and Rafi, Kay, and Thessaly were definite standouts. Their witty banter was easily some of my favorite parts.
That said, a few things didn’t quite work for me. There was a lot of description—especially when it came to smells. So many things smelled like ozone that I literally had to stop and Google what ozone even smells like 😅 It started pulling me out of the story after a while.
I also noticed some repetition, sometimes so close together that I thought I reread a line. There were moments where I felt a bit confused too, like not being totally sure what time it was or who was speaking.
There were also a couple of continuity issues that threw me off. For example, a scene with five vampires that had to make a decision and then we were only told about how four of them decided, and another where Rafi somehow gets assigned to two places at once (“Rafi, you’re with me. We’ll take the east wing… Rafi with me, south wing.”), which made the action harder to follow.
Overall, I enjoyed the story, the characters, and especially the Phoenix setting. Even with a few hiccups, I’m definitely curious to see what Harper, Jordan, & Soren get up to next.

If you’re an urban fantasy fan, you need to put Rayne & Ruin by C.Y. Benton on your TBR.
This follows Harper Rayne, a supernatural Enforcement Agent whose job is basically keeping vampires, witches, and shapeshifters in line. When a series of ritualistic murders starts threatening the balance between supernatural factions, Harper gets pulled into a mystery that might be tied to her own hidden powers.
I absolutely ate this book up. Harper is such a baddie—she’s fearless, a little reckless, but still has a soft heart that makes her impossible not to love.
And the love interests? A vampire regent and a jaguar shifter king? Say. Less. I completely understood why Harper couldn’t choose. This is the slowest of slow burns with a love triangle, zero spice, but the tension, banter, and chemistry are chef’s kiss.
The mystery keeps you guessing the entire time, and by the end I was already desperate for book two. I gave this one 4 stars, and I’m honestly so impressed that this is C.Y. Benton’s debut. I can’t wait to see where this series goes!!

I’m not even gonna lie, my heart absolutely broke for Jordan. Soren? Yeah… I’m side-eyeing him a little right now. I’m still undecided, but he definitely had me a little mad by the end.
And Harper?? Whew. She is THAT girl. Strong, resilient, a whole fighter, and low-key still a mystery because I’m sitting here like… okay but what are you really?? I need answers!
