Sunshine's Sorrow

Jayvin Dyre has trained his entire life for one to kill the Vampire Queen responsible for his father’s death.

As an Eldain—a gifted order of monster hunters—vampires have always topped his kill list.

When word spreads of Jayvin’s particular talents, he is offered more than another routine hunt—a chance to strike his true enemy, the Matriarch.
But the Matriarch has survived for a reason—and the Eldain are not the only ones who carry a grudge. And as Jayvin’s carefully laid plans begin to unravel, he finds himself caught in a battle that no longer follows the rules he was raised to trust.

Vengeance is now a liability, and Jayvin must confront a terrifying truth—not all nightmares can be defeated.

Some reshape you.
Some claim you.
And some turn you into the very thing you were born to destroy.

Easiest 5 stars I’ve given in a hot minute. There was very little about this that didn’t work for me or I didn’t enjoy and I can’t think of something to say that was negative.

I typically don’t like books that have parts that are segmented and don’t really play together, but this was so good. The first part follows Jayvin Dyre, a hybrid vampire Hunter motivated by revenge to kill the Matriarch who murdered his father. Between studying ways to kill and subdue vampires and being the leader of the small outpost, Jayvin carries a lot on his shoulders. That’s when he is given the opportunity to hunt the Matriarch and basically free the region from the vampires. From that decision on, nothing goes right.

When I got to part two, I was concerned that that’s where my interest would stop. But boy was I wrong. If anything, part two made me crave even more. I loved Jayvin in part one and it only grew more. He was so endearing and I cared so so deeply about him by the end. I did cry at how he was treated. I definitely felt that the author handled the intricacies of his “relationship” and existence in a really tactful way. It didn’t feel graphic or unnecessary but the closed door violence was incredibly important to not draw the attention away from Jayvin.

The fact that this was a prequel and basically just a character backstory novel was insane and it didn’t feel that way at all. I’m so excited to start reading the first book and everything after!

I received an arc of this book in exchange for an honest review! These are my own, unbiased thoughts!

You know that feeling when you pick up a book knowing it's going to emotionally wreck you, and somehow, you're excited for it anyway? Yeah... Sunshine’s Sorrow by Brittany Tucker is one of those books. As the prequel to Sunshine’s Syndicate, I thought I was prepared. I. Was. Not. Brittany does an incredible job answering every question as the story unfolds. Every reveal felt intentional, and by the end, I was left desperate to see what comes next. Now I need Book 3 IMMEDIATELY because I'm more than ready for the next phase of this story. I will never forget your name, Jayvin Dyre.

I'm not sure I have the words for this review. Hopefully my reactions throughout my read speak enough, but I always try to start reviews with vague, non-spoiler thoughts and there's just so much here. The characters? Amazing. Jayvin is such a solid main character and all of the support characters are written perfectly. I love how close we get to everyone, it makes it so much easier to root for them and more painful when things don't go well.
The plot? Perfection. It's fast paced and gripping. This story had me in a chokehold the entire read. I loved how Jayvin reacted to the situations he found himself in. The action is harrowing and the injuries gruesome. I cannot explain enough how glad I am that the author isn't afraid to show how dark this world can get for the people in it. I've never read a story where I genuinely didn't know who would survive—something I've been scouring the book world for.
Speaking of... the world? Immaculate. I love how thorough and immediate the world building is without feeling like the author is info dumping. I always knew exactly what I needed to to move forward. I cannot wait to see more of this world. I will be getting the series asap!

Okay, now for my reactions during my read. Warning, they are no very coherent, but they are very genuine. 😂

Okay, wow. A couple of pages in and I'm already hooked. It's immediately clear that the main character is willing to do anything for his family and is likely someone they lean on. It's impressive how much of his character can be seen in just a short scene. Chapter one continues that with mentions of his fighting abilities and his insistence to find new ways to defeat vampires.
I love that the elves are so easy to hate right off the bat. They're pompous, which works really well. The conversation with them in chapter 1 explains a lot of the world effortlessly. The world building is top notch. I love how the vampires are explained.
The Matriarch is such a perfect villain. I love that she's not a faceless threat looming over the story, like many villains. We meet her and see how terrifying she is. We see the horrors she creates and the torture she inflicts on the characters. The physical and mental pain Jay goes through because of her is so hard to look away from. It's painful (in the best way possible) cheering for him to succeed while knowing he likely won't. Watching how far he's able to tear himself forward only for her to ruin his progress and devastate everything.
My read included many texts to my friend who had no idea what was going on. Here are a few:

"Okay this arc is very good."
"Lots of death and destruction, very good characters and writing. World is intriguing and action is intense.
I'm having a very good time 😂"
(Some time later)
"BRO THIS ARC. Omg this is insane"
"There are vampires and bad things are happening"

(I'll continue adding my text reactions as they happen, but honestly my reactions here are going to be pretty short too because I cannot stop reading long enough to write anything coherent.)
Half way through and I'm already sad this read won't last forever.
THE ENDING OF PART ONE ARE YOU KIDDING ME?? I cannot. The fight, the heartbreak, the fading.... I need to sit for a moment and process everything that just happened... The Matriarch might have them in her grasp but not as much at Brittany Tucker has me. She's the real queen, jeez.
Text to friend:
"114 YEARS LATER
WAT
Bro this book has me sat 😂"

Knowing Jay was fully under Marceline's control for so long is just utterly heartbreaking. I love how the world shifts for him. He's no longer a confident warrior with a family to protect, but a loyal servant for the woman he believes saved his life. I wanted to punch her in the face when he lost his memories and she manipulated him. Myth's death... I can't even imagine what Jay might feel if he ever realizes who Myth was to him. Watching him begin to doubt the only world he knows is so exciting. I don't know if I've ever rooted for a character more.
Some quotes from the book that I really liked while he was discovering he was lied to:
"Joy is... It's deciding to be happy when there's no reason to be. It's an action, not something you can see."

"This—Vampirism—it was a curse. Not a blessing. Not a second chance. We were taken. Mutilated. And now we served the queens that destroyed us."

This book is just so beautifully written. I love that it doesn't shy away from darkness. Too many books allow the good guys to always be just short of victory but always within reach. This feels like we've fallen into a dark pit with very little hope of escape. (Reading through my reactions and lmao this couldn't be closer to Jay's truth 😂)

Half way through Chapter 26 reaction:
(She appears) (I pause) (I put my hands on head)
WHY DID SHE HAVE TO CATCH HIM BABY WAS LEARNING
"Jayvin, thank you for being my friend."
(Hands back on head)
Nooooo 😭😭😭
(Lowers hands as he fights it)
Omg you can do it Jay 😭
(Jaw drops)
Rip Eli 🥺
"I buried them—together. Beneath the stars. Where the sun could find them in the morning. I buried them with their hands cradling their son. The child who never got a chance. I buried them and wished I could bury myself with them."
SOBBING

The ending of chapter 28 😭😭😭 I have no coherent reactions just heartbreak. This is the worse fate for my baby boy 😭

Every time jump sends a crack of devastation through my heart. I'm still hoping Evie and Kade are alive and will come to save him but it feels less and less likely 😭

Final text to friend: Okay that arc destroyed me
Her: that good?
Me: So good 😭
There's actual death and heartbreak
That's all I want in my books
I don't ask for much

I don't know what else to say, other than I think I would follow Brittany Tucker as loyally as a drone to a queen. And you should read this. Trust me.

It is a rare prequel that can both stand alone AND make you appreciate the original book even more, to the point where you want to immediately reread the original, then the prequel again…

From the moment I met Jayvin in Sunshine’s Syndicate, I was as fascinated by him as Tetra was. Sorrow gives us the devastating backstory fans needed while still feeling like a completely new adventure!

There are complex women and men you can relate to. Flawed heroes you root for. Vampire, elf, and fae cultures that feel as natural and lived-in as mermaid politics did in the first book. Brittany Tucker has a gift for writing fantastical differences as though they are simply part of nature.

I also love the tonal balances, never a dull moment: in one, a vampire may try and eat you, but in another, they may not stop talking about sparrows, lol. Even when the story gets dark, trust that it will become light again.
And it gets DARK.

There is bloodshed without glorification, grisly horror that psychologically turns your stomach but you’d still rather die than stop reading, and a manipulative, gaslighting villain who is far too shudderingly realistic.

One of the most arresting and sympathetic things was a character’s involuntary obedience and helplessness, the excruciating feeling of being compelled to obey. As an adult, I know smaller versions of masking, following rules I don’t agree with, and performing what the world expects. Obviously my masking to seem normal is nothing like their life or death circumstances, but reading this story through his perspective gave language to a kind of helplessness that is incredibly difficult to describe but makes me feel more understood for reading it.

There are innocuous (to an innocent bystander who has read neither book) lines that made me gasp because I had read Sunshine’s Syndicate, which were fun Easter eggs but wouldn’t spoil anything! OMG but there is a character I did not realize I loved until I was suddenly destroyed. Ahhh and there is the most edge of my seat scene I have ever read that takes place in a library.

Favorite quotes

Optimism through darkness:
“Joy is choosing to be happy even when there is no reason to be. It is an action.”

Literally cheesy:
“—cheese. The object of all my desires. The craving that kept me up at night. I skid to a stop in front of the stall, nearly taking out three shoppers in the process. Trays and trays of it. White cheese. Yellow cheese. Hard cheese. Soft cheese.”

Cat daddy:
“We’re going to make it. We have to. Someone has to feed my cat.”

Both Sunshine’s Sorrow (Jayvin’s story) and Sunshine’s Syndicate (Tetra’s story) have a way of drawing you into their world on an adventure you never expected, only to realize before it’s too late that you never want to leave. Prepare for sorrow, but also for sunshine!

Brittany Tucker has done it again! Sunshine’s Sorrow is the equivalent of throwing my emotional stability into a blender, but loving it so much I’m asking for more through the tears!!😭
I had read Sunshine’s Syndicate twice before I dived into this prequel so I already loved vampire Jayvin but this took things to a whole other level!
The way Brittany wrote this book you honestly forget that it is in fact a prequel. I would get so sucked in that there were moments I would forget I already knew Jayvin’s fate and what happens in the end. It had me sitting straight up in my bed at 3am white knuckling my kindle!!

And Jayvin, oh my sweet baby Jay.
I wish I could put him in bubble wrap to save him from the pain Brittany puts him through.
I was crying my eyes out after the first chapter!!
And again….and again….and again….

I absolutely adore Jayvin in his vampire form but I feel at war with myself trying to decide if I love him as a hunter or vampire more???
The way the book is divided between hunter and vampire was absolute genius. I loved getting to read about his struggles, trauma and even his family as a hunter. And then to have one of the most gut wrenching scenes I’ve ever read right before switching to vampire Jay had me desperately flipping the page trying to read through tears. I thought that the book would end once Jayvin turned but it didn’t! Brittany spoiled us by including Jayvin’s experiences as a “new” vampire. Both parts are so important to understanding why Jayvin is the way now.

I was not expecting to be clingy to a new character but Gwenny is now my spirit animal and I absolutely ADORE HER!!😍
I may start a fan club just for her?…….

I will be recommending this to everyone around me that has eyes and the ability to read!! (I even have my husband reading it 🫣)

Brittany has a way of writing that always makes me FEEL something. Wether it’s joy, anticipation, or complete and total emotional annihilation, I always finish the book feeling a little more alive and a little less satisfied with the real world.
There is a reason she is my favorite author!

Thank you for writing another masterpiece Brittany Tucker, I can’t wait to find out what happened next!!!

devastatingly good!

Jayvin!! One of my top fave book MMC now. I absolutely LOVED the way the author captured the evolution of his character and personality as it led to the version I was familiar with in Sunshine’s Syndicate.

Part 1 was very serious, rather morbid, and quite bleak. I FELT the fatigue of being a monster hunter plagued by rising vampire attacks. I felt how the shared hardships between Jayvin, his men, and those he protects forged a deep sense of respect and community that made the horrors of Part 2 so much more heart wrenching.

It’s a TOTALLY different vibe than Sunshine’s Syndicate which serves as the perfect contrast to the whimsy and love Jayvin finds (eventually). It just takes a lot of hurt to get there.

Speaking of hurt…part 2 - wow. That was bloody, gruesome, and absolutely unhinged. The author did an excellent job capturing the mental fractures that come with the trauma and the magic of being ‘reborn’ (something the author already did exceptionally well in book 1.

I’m in awe of how expertly Brittany Tucker wove these deep, complex characters. Not just Jayvin, but the other hunters, humans, the Matriarch and her bratty daughter Gwenny. So so many good things to say about each and everyone. I was rooting for some of these characters one minute and then mentally shaking my fist or sobbing over them the next.

I truly did not know if I hated or respected the hell out of the Mother Vampire - she was cut throat, conniving, and manipulative to an admirably extreme degree.

And the ending where we get Jayvin’s POV as Tetra saves him is so beautiful and lovely. *sighs wistfully*

Thank you so much to the author for the opportunity to read this before everyone else! Such an incredible journey that will make you feel happy, sad, terrified, hopeful, and slightly kooky.

A must read if you like vampires, mindbenders, fractured identity, evil (or deeply misguided?) Matriarchs, and emotionally gut wrenching stories (in a good way 😁)

⭐️⭐️⭐️️⭐️/🌶️

Another book that I knew was going to be emotionally devastating when I started it, yet I still wasn’t prepared for the actual heartache I would endure. Brittany Tucker, you have created a series that I cannot get enough of. The Sunshine series now has 2 books, Sunshine’s Sorrow being the newest. While book 2, this is actually a prequel to book 1 and gives more background to a beloved character. Yet, while this is a prequel, it can easily stand on its own and makes you appreciate book 1 even more.

If you haven’t read book 1 yet, let me introduce you to Jayvin. His journey is one of emotional depth and turmoil, but one you will not want to put down because it is a story worth reading. The way you want to see Jayvin come out unscathed in this book is only lessened by the fact you know he won’t. Brittany balances light and dark themes so well in this book, so when things seem rather dark (and trust me they get dark) there will always be a lighter feel coming within the next few pages.

While a prequel, this book doesn’t end up spoiling too much of book 1 for new readers. It makes you need to read that book, yet I highly recommend reading Sunshine’s Syndicate first. This story may not have a happy ending as we define it, but I am still so happy I read this book. If you have been looking for complex, deep characters; with a storyline that is intricate and woven together by different viewpoints, this is definitely a book you need to read!

As always, review any author notes before reading.

Thank you Brittany Tucker for letting me alpha, beta, and ARC read Sunshine's Sorrow. All opinions are my own ❤️

⭐⭐⭐⭐½
Sunshine's Sorrow
By Brittany Tucker

Sunshine's Sorrow is a villain origin story and the prequel to Sunshine's Syndicate, a D&D-style heist romance. (Read my review of Syndicate here.)

While Syndicate is a fairly lighthearted intro to its universe, Sunshine's Sorrow is FULL of trauma, lore, and questions.

In a quest to destroy the fabled vampire queen, known as the Matriarch, the legendary vampire hunter Jayvin Dyre dives in far deeper than he expected, slowly becoming the very thing he has sworn to eliminate.

This is an incredible look into Tucker's worldbuilding, her hierarchies, and the realm and characters I came to love in book one.

With the addition of new side characters like Gwenny, Myth, and Eli, I found myself deeply invested in the stakes of each character's arc. Gwenny is definitely my personal favorite; I don't want to spoil it but I think I want to be her best friend and give her all of the love that she's seeking.

The Matriarch is cold, complicated, and her gaslighting is EXTREME. I loved the representation of narcissistic abuse in this story, and our characters' different but genuine reactions to their Matriarch-given traumas.

There are tons of small references to the first book sprinkled throughout this story, and I loved the little pieces of early Jayvin that shine through even in the end.

⭐⭐⭐⭐½

Deep, powerful, relatable, and tear jerking.

Brittany’s writing is absolutely incredible; from the world building to the emotional depth that you can feel bleed through the pages into your own heart, every piece is immaculately done.

Tears were fought, so many times throughout reading this book, but they did end up being ahead.

There were so many times I’d really hoped certain characters I bonded to would survive, but my hopes were crushed each time. As much at it broke my heart to see so many wonderful characters die, it really tied together the character development of Jayvin and how his personality manifests in Sunshine’s Syndicate (first book of the series that follows after this prequel).

Following alongside Jayvin’s first hand experience with death, loss and grief gave me a new perspective on how much loss a person can handle and how they persevere through it. There’s only been so many people I’ve lost to physical death, but a lot of people I had to grieve that are still living. My heart ached for him when he was sealed in the tomb at the end, begging for an end to his misery as I myself, have asked for an end of some kind after experiencing so much. But alas, things do get better for him, as did in my own life too. 🤍

Thank you, Brittany, for bringing a world of so much depth emotionally and visually that is so truly relatable and engaging that it feels as if you’re apart of the story. 🤍 can’t wait to see what’s in store for Jayvin and Tetra in the next novel!

Brittany Tucker has done it again. Every time I think her books can't possibly get any better, she proves me wrong—and somehow raises the bar by leaps and bounds.

*Sunshine's Sorrow* was absolutely phenomenal. In fact, I'm pretty sure this book is responsible for the future tear stains on my pillow.

Our MMC, Jayvin, is an Eldain vampire hunter who is half-human and half-elf. His singular goal in life is to kill the Matriarch—also known as Mother. Keeping this completely spoiler-free, I'll just say that things do **not** go according to plan.

Jayvin was already one of my favorite characters from *Sunshine's Syndicate*, but getting his story added so much depth to his character. He is raw, emotional, fiercely loyal, and heartbreakingly human despite everything he's endured. His backstory shattered me in the best possible way, and it made me love him even more.

I cried multiple times while reading this book. There may have been moments where I silently cussed out Brittany, set my Kindle down in disbelief, and questioned my emotional stability. The pain was worth it.

Jayvin will forever be one of my favorite MMCs of all time, and *Sunshine's Sorrow* cemented that fact. Brittany Tucker has created something truly special with this series, and I already know I'll be counting down the days until the next book.

*Thank you so much to the author for letting me ARC read. This is an honest review and contains all my own thoughts*

This was... everything. Everything I wanted from this prequel and then some.
I absolutely adored Sunshine's Syndicate, so I was SO excited to find out that we were going to get a Jayvin prequel, and it somehow exceeded my expectations. If you're looking for a book that will give you all of the emotional damage, this is the one for you.
Jayvin is such an incredible main character for this story. His life is so interesting, and he's such a layered and complex character. His journey from his village through to where we meet him in Syndicate is absolutely packed full of terror, sweet moments, humour and absolute devastation.
Brittany continues to just get better and better as a writer, and the descriptions in this book are so good. I felt like I was right there, alongside Jayvin, seeing everything he saw and feeling everything he felt.
I don't want to give any spoilers, but all of the other characters in this book are so well written, two in particular are just such a joy to read (even when they're making me cry). I was so invested in every single character in this story, and I want to know more about every single one of them.
This had me smiling and crying and everything in between, and I can not wait for Brittany to hurt me again in her next book.

If you want joy in your life… read this one before Sunshine’s Syndicate as it’s a more HAE ending for Jayvin. If you enjoy destroying yourself with emotional trauma and devastation then read book 1 before this one. Either way, you are in for a treat. Brittany continues to write another heartfelt storyline and Jayvin’s is so utterly, heartbreakingly beautiful. Watching his story unfold as he becomes the one thing he hates and has hunted pulls at your heart strings in so many ways. Being the prequel to Sunshine’s Syndicate, we get a special point of view into the backstory of Jayvin who we original met or meet in Sunshine’s Syndicate. The prequel storyline ends where we meet him later in Sunshine’s Syndicate! Brittany never fails to write such complex characters who feel so much and are perfectly imperfect. Jayvin’s story is one of grief, trauma and redemption as his worst nightmare redefines him as he faces a difficult truth that threatens everything he believed of in himself. Everything about this prequel is exactly what you want in a book: character development and depth, well written storyline with an engaging plot, pacing that doesn’t stall or plateau, an authentic world, and a meaningful underlying theme. I can’t wait to see how his story continues in future books and what all his future entails on his quest for revenge!

I knew what I was getting myself into. I knew we would be diving into Jay's history. I knew how it would all end. I knew. I knew, and still my heart broke into a million pieces. Shattered on the floor. Rendered into oblivion. Plucked, still beating, from my chest. I knew. No. I thought I knew what I was getting myself into.

Sunshine's Sorrow isn't simply a prequel. It's a saga of one man's life, his love, loss, grief, and sorrow. His anger and rage. His shining intellect and his brave heart. A saga of his life and of his downfall. Of his devastating, soul-crushing moments when all seemed lost.

And yet, one thing remained even when everything turned black. A name. His name. Jayvin Dyre. They took everything from him. But his name remained. His name and the fragments of his beautiful, lost soul. Bent, yet not broken. Not fully.

He knew one thing: his name. Jayvin Dyre. And that name, that notion of self, is what would eventually set him free. Because, even in his darkest, most devastating hours, when all hope feels lost, a ray of sunshine will break through.

Thank you, Brittany. Thank you for bringing these characters to life and allowing us to meet and love them. Thank you.

I loved Sunshine's Syndicate but I LOVED Sunshine's Sorrow. I wish I could read it for the first time again.

Sunshine's Sorrow follows Jayvin Dyre, an Eldain Vampire Hunter turned Vampire Offspring. He is tasked with the impossible: hunt down the Matriarch, the original Vampire. I absolutely loved the parts Brittany Tucker split this book up into. Seeing his life before and his life after the turn was heartbreakingly perfect. Seeing what he lost and how he wrestled with it being right there, just out of reach made the depth of Jayvin's character grow tenfold.

Brittany is also fantastic at writing crews of characters. Even after only 100 pages, I was so torn up by Uncle Myth as Jayvin turned, begging him to remember his name. By Kade being asked to return to their village for Evie with Whisper in tow. By Jayvin's slaughter of his home, the spotlight on Rosalie, that will surely haunt him for his immortal life. I can't think of another book that made me emotional during the bulk of it. In part 2, we were surrounded by villains, some grayer than others. I'm not convinced Gwendolyn is evil, and I hope to see more of her in book 3 and perhaps see her redeemed.

Overall, this was the best prequel to Sunshine's Syndicate I could have hoped for.

Never thought a prequel could make me feel this way.
Was it torture? Yes, but did I love every second of it? 100000000x yes!

(I read Sunshine’s Syndicate first which is publication order not chronological order)

The fact that we know where Jayvin’s story ultimately leads him, is what kept me going but also destroyed me at the same time. It's amazing that Brittany is able to keep us at the edge of our seat when we already know where this book ends. That just goes to show her ability to take you through the journey of these characters and truly enjoy the whole ride and not just the outcome.

This can be read either before or after Sunshine’s Syndicate, but I honestly couldn't tell you which way is better. What I can tell you is that I have emotional investment in these characters (particularly Jayvin) which definitely affected my experience (in an amazing way) while reading Sunshine’s Sorrow.

Also, that last chapter!!!!! Omg to finally experience it from Jayvin’s POV was pure ecstasy.

I would recommend this book by shouting it from the rooftops if I could! But leaving this review will have to do.

“Remember your name," he repeated, like a prayer. "Jayvin Dyre.”

Sunshine's Sorrow by Brittany Tucker is an emotional roller coaster. I was not expecting to be so heartbroken and emotionally devastated over and over and over again. Every time I thought, "Well, it can't possibly get any worse for Jayvin," it somehow did. I felt so connected to every character. Everything felt so real, raw, and relatable.

Set more than a century before Sunshine's Syndicate, this prequel follows Jayvin Dyre's origin story, introducing his family and revealing the man he was before everything changed. When Jayvin and his crew are hired to kill the Matriarch, things take a sinister turn. Forced to choose between what he feels in his heart and what he knows in his mind, Jayvin sets out in search of answers—but will he like what he discovers?

Jayvin's grief, confusion, and internal struggle were captured so beautifully as he searches for the truth of who he is and who he once was.

Brittany brought so much emotion and originality to this story. My heart never stopped racing, and the tears never stopped falling. The ending leads perfectly into Sunshine's Syndicate, and honestly, I highly recommend reading Sunshine's Sorrow first. Go in blind. Let it completely devastate you before diving into the found family, top-tier banter, and unforgettable heist that follows.

What a spectacular book. This story is unlike anything I've ever read. All I have to say is... Brittany, who hurt you? And can I please give you a hug?

Sunshine’s Sorrow by Brittany Tucker is book 2 in the Sunshine Series. It tells the story of how Jayvin, a vampire hunter, became a vampire, hundreds of years before the events in Sunshine’s Syndicate. Though this is book two, this is definitely a prequel. And honestly, I think I would have preferred reading this prior to reading Sunshine’s Syndicate.

But either way, this book was so good. I really loved reading Jayvin’s story. The way he fought so hard to not give in to his vampirism, and defy his maker. How he struggled to remember his life before he became a vampire. And just the fact that he still was trying to hold on to his humanity. It was such a good book and made me understand him quite a bit more.

Sunshine’s Syndicate is a big adventure heist. There are multiple characters all with their own stories. But Sunshine’s Sorrow is strictly Jayvin’s story. If you like vampire books, where the vampire is basically having an existential crisis, this book is for you. After reading this book, I now want to go back and reread Sunshine’s Syndicate.

Brittany Tucker has officially wrecked me.

Sunshine’s Sorrow has been such an impactful read. I genuinely could not believe how emotionally invested I became as I kept turning the pages. I was less than halfway through and already catching myself tearing up and wiping my face.

Following Jayvin through his journey captured parts of me I didn’t even realize could be reached. This story was incredibly easy to follow, which somehow made it even easier to become completely immersed and emotionally attached.

Even though this can absolutely be read as a standalone, I loved having read book one (Sunshine’s Syndicate) beforehand because it made returning to this world feel that much more meaningful. The setting was vivid, detailed and effortless to picture.

And THAT ENDING?!?! Who gave Brittany permission to do such a thing?! Because excuse me?? I need a book 3 immediately.

This one took pieces of me with it.

Star rating:⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
Release date: 7/24/26

I've been looking forward to this book since book 1 and it absolutely did not disappoint. If I could rate it 5 billion I literally would because I'm obsessed with this whole story. Did I get emotionally tormented, yes I did but let's face it, I knew that going into it.
This book really captures Jayvin's personality and I loved the bits from book 1 that were thrown in, some even giving me a giggle🧀. We first start his story in his home village where we get to learn of his family, friends, and life before. Then comes the mission that changes everything and sends us into emotional turmoil but ultimately sets the stage for where we meet him in Sunshines Syndicate.
This book is a definite must read as well as all of Brittany's other books. Fingers crossed we get another book soon because I'm already having withdrawals over here. I promise you will not be disappointed in this series

[ARC review]
I went in knowing I was reading a prequel (to a book I hadn't read yet.) and this story felt anything like one.
After reading Syndicate, I would still naturally refer to Sorrow as a full book 1 of the series.

Rare occurence, this one managed to surprise me. The story went in a totally different direction than I expected. Would be worth the 5-stars for this alone.
Jayvin has some atypical and funny traits, which I will not spoil here, that blend in nicely into Syndicate. They made me love him even more. He's defenitely my favorite character in the series.
Loved his development, as well as where he stands as a person at the beginning and end of this book.
Curious for more from Gwendolyn as well.

One hell of an (origin) story. Bringing character and world background, answering questions for those who started with Syndicate, Raising new ones, and opening on a whole new side of the world & their inhabitants.
Great read, Highly recommended; So exited for book 3 !

I don’t know that I’ve dreaded the ending of a book so deeply before. I didn’t want the journey to be over!! Even though this is a prequel to Sunshine’s Syndicate I’m really glad I read it first. Having an attachment to Jayvin Dyre going into this book really heightened the devastation of his origin story. Knowing there’s a third book coming, I don’t know how I’m gonna wait or handle reading it. It’s such an incredible story that just takes you on such an emotional journey and you feel so deeply attached to so many of the characters.

The vampire dynamics are refreshing and very interesting. I loved learning about their lore and understanding more of what was so phenomal about Jayvin’s existence in Syndicate. It’s a brutal exploration of humanity, self discovery, and a celebration of being “not normal” that so many of us need.

Thank you to the author for a review copy in exchange for a voluntary review. I think I enjoyed this prequel more than Sunshine and I loved that one. This is more dark and emotional than the original. Brittany has an amazing way of writing characters that are completely developed and easy to connect to. This is Jayvin’s backstory. He is out to get revenge for his father’s death and he must kill the Matriarch. His journey is dark and devastating but Brittany artfully takes the reader along such an amazing path. You will fall in love with this world and be sucked in with by the characters and plot that the book ends before you are ready. The author warns you that every detail matters and they truly do. I cannot wait for the next one to see where the journey leads next. Totally recommend for a little escape read.

ARC Review ❤️ all my thanks to the author
4.5 ⭐

I read and enjoyed Sunshine's Syndicate and forgot or just totally overlooked that this is a prequel. That said, it gives the background of the cheese-obsessed vampire so I was still all in. This is my first read of 2026 I read in less than 24 hours. I was hooked. I wish I could read more of it!

This book explained so much of the background trauma that Jayvin went through, even though he has always had the best intentions. There are parts of this story that are just truly devastating. However, book 1 has some hope and joy for him. He just had to go through a lot to get there.

Like any good prequel, this one adds maximum emotional impact to the main storyline. I wholeheartedly recommend it after reading book 1.

I received this book as an ARC and today is release day! Congratulations to the author for ripping my heart out and putting it back in with tattered stitches. Ouch! Jayvin my sweet sweet boy 😭 the trauma is relatable and absolutely horrific. I highly recommend reading the prequel after book one, it is such a trip and hunting down Easter eggs will bring you glee amidst the tale that will hurt and hurt and hurt. This book made me cry and cemented my already diehard love for this series and this author. This one is grim and gritty and somehow even darker than Book 1, but at the end of it all, there is still that shining beacon of faelight glinting at the edge of the neverending dark. In all the best and worst ways, this book will stick with me for a good long time.

This book... Gosh, it ripped my heart out and stomped on it. And ended with so much Hope. Jayvin's story is so much more than I expected. AND I have so many questions still.

Anyways, Brittany said somewhere that you can read this book and Sunshine Syndicate in any order. I think that is true, but I am glad for the order I read them in - Sunshine Syndicate first, then Sunshine's Sorrow. It adds a lot more and fills in so much that Jayvin doesn't share in the first one. It also explains so much of why he is who he is now, a little mad, so happy with the little things.

Final thoughts. Loved this book. There will be a reread someday.

Returning to the world of Sunshine was like coming home. Jayvin had intrigued me in the first book, Sunshine’s Syndicate, so it was a no brainer to read the prequel centered around Jayvin’s backstory. Heartbreak and sorrow perfectly sum up his journey in the book. I love the way Brittany writes, her ability to create beautiful, fully fleshed out worlds never ceases to amaze me. Her sense of humor comes through in every book she writes and it was so fun reading about Jayvin’s quirks that connected to Sunshine’s Syndicate! (His love of cheese being one) I loved this book so much and can’t wait to read the next one!

I really enjoyed getting to see Jayvin’s backstory and learning how he became a vampire. Seeing the emotional trauma he went through while under the matriarch’s control added so much depth to his character and made me understand more why he was the way he was in Sunshine’s Syndicate. Sunshine’s Sorrow has a darker feel than the first book, but I actually ended up liking it even more because of that. Jayvin’s story was heartbreaking at times, but it made him such an interesting character to follow.

Thank you to the author Brittany Tucker for sending me and eARC in exchange for an honest review 🫶🏻

I received this as an ARC from the author, and this is my honest review.
I had forgotten that this was a prequel when I started it, and having not read the other book yet, I was going in blind. It was definitely an origin story, and it was not a happy story! It was well written, with interesting characters and events, but as someone who reads books that are a but more uplifting with at least some happy parts, it was hard to read at times. But I am glad I did, and now I am going to have to read the next one so I can (hopefully) see this poor guy get some happiness. All that being said, I read it in one night and couldn't put it down!

4.75 Treats. An enjoyable prequel to Sunshine’s Syndicate. At first we thought we should have read this one first but by the end, we realized that was not the case. While it was tough to see the change for Jayvin, knowing what was to come made it more bearable. This is an interesting take on vampire culture and quite original for us. Not only the hierarchies and the process of making/becoming a vampire, but also that they can still eat human food. After reading these two books, we are hoping for more in the realm of Tyr.

I wondered how Jay's transformation and descent into madness would go, and I wasn't disappointed! I couldn't put it down!

When I first read Syndicate, I thought he was a little cheesy, but I didn't mind it. Sorrow took every piece of him from Syndicate and wove it into a fantastic backstory. I'm glad I read this one second, but now I have to reread Syndicate again!

I can't wait to read a third book in the series! Please tell me there's a third book??
