The author has backgrounds in England, Ireland, and Australia but she knows modern Ireland in a totally authentic way.
It's written in the first person from the point of view of the boy whose family is going through a rough period. I love the fact that the writer is equally at home in both Dublin and "the countryside", a big divide here as in many European countries. Another plus for me was that she avoided so many coming-of-age clichés by making the boy a child, just about to awaken to the attractions of the other gender.
The book has zero sentimentality. Nobody is a saint, and thank God, nobody preaches. Great ending with strong emotion. Having rediscovered it in my bookcase, I'll be rereading it as soon as my schedule allows.
