Taryn's Camera #3

Dark Hollow Road

Rate this book
A teenage girl is missing and Taryn's camera is showing her a haunted past she NEVER wanted to see...

When your camera can see the past, it's a history lover's dream! Historical mysteries never seemed so alive, and solvable. But sometimes the past should stay buried. The hauntings and ghosts are only the beginning of what Taryn sees!

Beautiful Cheyenne Willoughby had her whole life ahead of her. But her 18th birthday, she simply vanished, rocking her small Georgian town to the core. Now, artist and haunted house lover Taryn Magill has moved onto the very farm where Cheyenne spent her last night. She went there to teach a class at the local college, but her job takes a completely different turn when she’s thrown into the middle of Cheyenne’s mysterious disappearance.

Armed with her camera that can see the past, Taryn aims to find out what happened to Cheyenne once and for all. Is the young girl still out there, trying to find her way home? Or did she succumb to some horrible fate? As Taryn finds herself more and more entrenched in the mystery of Cheyenne’s disappearance, she begins unraveling the secrets of the rural southern town.

The spirits here are restless, but it might be the living she must fear the most!

Book 3 in the Taryn’s Camera series. In the style of Shirley Jackson, Mary Higgins Clark, Heather Graham, and early Stephen King, Taryn’s Camera is a supernatural mystery and haunted house series for ghost story lovers and history buffs about a reluctant psychic who can see the past through her camera. A little gothic, a little supernatural suspense, a little horror-and a whole lot of fun!

I love this series! This one was a bit different than the first two, but of course Taryn and Miss Daisy came through. It kept me guessing.....

now i am hooked. This was such a great, easy and creative book. i was hooked after the first page.

The characters were easy to fall in love with and follow, along with the story. the author made the mental visions so easy and vivid of the surroundings and the characters actions felt so real.

i would highly recommend this author and this book.

Good read

I'm not good at writing reviews. Taryn is drawn into an unsolved mystery and immediately the ghost tries to impart things to her. An unresolved disappearance takes a round about way of resolving it.

I love mysteries, and specially this series. Compared to the first two, this one was a bit different. Taryn's Gift with Miss Daisy never ceases to amaze me. I can't wait to read the next book. How will Taryn's relationship with Matt evolve?

Better than the preceding entry but still a lot weaker than the first. Matt's presence resulted in Taryn losing a lot of her autonomy, which is one of the things that had made her interesting in the first place. The man has the personality of a clingy bowl of oatmeal, and acts as a narrative wet blanket, smothering any chance the story had of being spooky. Taryn has become a frightened damsel to compensate for his presence. And their relationship clearly isn't healthy, it's not abusive, they're just not suited for living together. He did far better as the voice of reason on the phone, and hopefully will return to that role. The author still seems have some weird internalized-misogyny related hangups about age, treating Taryn like she's "past her prime" when she's 30. 30 isn't even middle aged!

In my last review for this series I said this: "The third book better not also pull another "Plot twist! The murderer was an innocent seeming old woman!", well the good news is that the murderer wasn't an innocent seeming old woman. The bad news is that, plot twist, the main murderer was an innocent seeming young woman. This is becoming increasingly absurd. Friendly reminder that 96% of all murderers are men. It's especially irksome because I think the books are trying to be feminist, but the absurd ageism and fixation on Taryn's appearance, and this weird misrepresentation of violence as something that is primarily the fault of women, are standing in the way of any positive overall message.

Not to mention gratuitous descriptions of assault like this one: "Like most people probably did, she tried to envision him assaulting Cheyenne. Maybe peeling her jeans off while she kicked frantically at him, or perhaps laid unconcious on a hard floor. Her shirt lifted over her head, her bra ripped open revealing firm, teenage breasts."

Also, any professor who grades based on perceived effort instead of on quality is an ass.

This differs a bit from the previous books in the series, in that "all the key players are still alive" as Matt says. That doesn't stop Taryn's senses from picking up on the spirits of the dead tho, and it rolls out as a bit of a mix of paranormal and classic murder plot. I liked the scenery and as always enjoy the small-town America I'm getting to know through Patrick's books. Still, I can't help missing the historical settings of previous stories, and am hoping she'll revert to the old mansions, maids and general 19th Century sheenanigans in the next installment.
In this book Taryn and Matt have gone beyond friendship, but I'm not sure if I liked them better as just friends or not. Matt clingy-ness got a bit annoying after a while, as did his gourmet cooking pretentions (can't rule out that my perception here is affected by recent binge-watching of Hannibal... sorry, this sentiment might change with a bit of perspective). I don't know what the author has in store for them, but she lines up so many obstacles and geographic impossibillities that I get the feeling they might not be meant to be.

And I feel sorry for Taryn that she's been struck with EDS, but I know now a little of how crippling it can be, and this might be a good way to spread an understanding of what it is like to live and manage every-day life with an illness like that.

Anyway, Taryn is so much easier to relate to than the usual heroines that are either perfect, or middle-aged alcoholic divorcees who sits on the fence in regards to legality and who it applies to. I'm certainly not giving up on her!

Best of the series so far! Taryn gets a job teaching a class and Matt joins her. They stay in a cabin owned by the woman who hired her. It turns out that the woman's daughter went missing 1 year ago and she has ulterior motives for hiring Taryn (She wants Taryn to find out what happened to her daughter). Taryn is still coming to grips with her "gift" and is met with some really scary surprises in this book.
As the story unfolds, Taryn and Matt (who's relationship has become more romantic, deal with whether they want this to be a more permanent relationship or not. Worth the read.

Book Three...and the story of Taryn and her gifts, continues. She is brought to a place to teach a class at the local college - about photography and painting of old buildings before they are restored to give them historical 'correctness', of to memorialize them before they are demolished. Her class appreciates her and she gets a handle on her nerves....until she realizes the place she is staying, out of town and lonely at the edge of the woods, is tickling her paranormal senses. Luckily, she has Matt around to help her feel safe while she's settling in...or, unsettling?? ;)

Once I started reading this, I couldn't put it down. I just love a good paranormal story. This was a decent plot with characters you can relate to. The rhythm of all these books is a little less than ideal for me... they start with a flurry of activity, then there's a lull in the middle with maddeningly little happening and then a fast and furious ending. I'd love to see just a bit more action in the middle, so the end isn't so frantic.

Each book gets better and better

I started reading this series because I am a photographer and interested in the paranormal. I love how the author uses photography in with the paranormal and that Taryn names her camera. She gets herself in some trouble but always gets out with her friend Matt. I am waiting for the 4th in the series.

Enjoyed Dark Hollow Road

Aside from a few editing mistakes, and a bit too descriptive sometimes, I would have given 5 stars. I love the main character, with very real problems as well as a realistic psychic ability. Five stars for the humanity and care going into this novel. Enjoy!

This is truly unusual ghost story. This story has so many twists and turns I just kept read to find out what happened next. Very well developed characters. Love the mystery around the heroine and her camera. I truly enjoy how in each story we learn more about the heroine and the hero.

Great read!

Shakers and ghostxz

Never knew anything about Shakers before this book except in reference to their being a religious group who made lovely furniture. But, I really enjoyed this book even though I thought this would be my least favorite in the series.

Great story, great read

I enjoyed this continuing story. The only problem I had with it were the numerous typographical errors. They distracted me from the story.
