Hatch: A Touch Starved CEO Enemies-to-Lovers Romance

Rate this book
He wants her company. She wants him gone. Two weeks in the middle of nowhere is about to change everything.

Aurora Walker’s nonprofit, Hatch, is crumbling. It’s out of time, out of money, and one bad decision away from vanishing forever.

Enter Emerson Hall. CEO. Corporate shark. Infuriatingly magnetic man who wants to remake everything she’s built.

His offer?

Two weeks in remote Timor-Leste. Aurora shows him what Hatch really does. He watches, listens, and if she convinces him, he invests on her terms.

She accepts, but she shouldn’t.

Because the man who shows up in Timor isn’t the one she’s prepared for. He fixes broken-down cars in brutal heat, is universally beloved by children (and universally hated by chickens), and touches her like she’s something worth being careful with.

He also has particular ideas about what it means to take care of someone.

And somehow, impossibly, she’s starting to want to let him.

Perfect for fans of The Hating Game and It Happened One Summer. Hatch is a slow-burn, opposites attract romance with sharp banter, forced proximity, and a touch starved MMC who only has eyes for one stubborn, brilliant woman.

Thank you Steph Stewart for the ARC! All opinions are my own

I really like the premise of this book. Throughout it you can tell by the writing that the author has a genuine care for the work that Hatch does in the story. Aurora and Emerson were great characters, the banter between them was light and funny, and I could genuinely see them working as a couple. I just feel like there wasn’t a lot of emotional depth to their character and relationship building. I did enjoy the aspect of the nonprofits work and what they were doing, and I loved that Emerson was not the cold CEO that he seems.

🌴 Lost in Timor-Leste, Found in Each Other 🌴
⭐⭐⭐⭐ 4 Stars
🌶️🌶️ Spice

Hatch completely stole my heart.

What started as a story about saving a struggling nonprofit quickly turned into a romance filled with adventure, meaningful work, sharp banter, and two characters I couldn't help but root for. From the moment Aurora and Emerson were thrown together, I was hooked.

Aurora was exactly the kind of heroine I love reading about. She's fiercely independent, passionate about her work, and completely devoted to the mission she's built through Hatch. She's spent years fighting for something she believes in, and watching her refuse to compromise that vision made it impossible not to admire her. Beneath her tough exterior, though, is someone carrying the weight of enormous responsibility, and I loved watching her slowly learn that she didn't have to carry it all alone.

Then there's Emerson Hall.

Listen... I knew I liked him almost immediately.

What starts as the image of a cold, corporate CEO quickly unravels into something entirely different. Emerson was thoughtful, capable, caring, and completely devoted once Aurora worked her way under his skin. He may have arrived as the man threatening everything she'd built, but he quickly became one of my favorite parts of the story. Watching Aurora's assumptions about him fall apart chapter by chapter was incredibly satisfying.

And honestly? Emerson is officially one of my favorite book boyfriends.

The romance between them was sweet, steady, and built on genuine respect. Their opposites-attract dynamic worked so well because they challenged each other constantly while still bringing out the best in one another. The banter was light, funny, and effortless, and I loved watching them slowly move from frustration and skepticism to trust and understanding.

One of my favorite things about this book was that it avoided the typical relationship drama that so many romances rely on. Instead of forcing conflict where it didn't belong, Steph Stewart allowed Aurora and Emerson's relationship to develop naturally. Their connection felt safe, supportive, and refreshingly mature.

The setting was another standout. Timor-Leste felt vivid, immersive, and incredibly important to the story. You can tell Steph Stewart genuinely cares about the work Hatch is doing because every aspect of the nonprofit's mission felt thoughtful and meaningful. It wasn't simply a backdrop for the romance—it became an important part of both characters' journeys and added depth to the entire story.

And yes, the chickens absolutely deserve an honorable mention.

That being said, what kept this from being a full five-star read for me was wanting more depth in a few areas. I found myself wishing for additional backstory regarding Aurora's ex-fiancé and more exploration of Emerson's family history and childhood experiences. While I completely believed in their connection and enjoyed their relationship, I would have loved a little more emotional depth and relationship development to make their journey feel even stronger.

Still, none of those things took away from how much I enjoyed this story.

Hatch is a heartfelt, feel-good romance filled with meaningful work, memorable characters, beautiful travel elements, and a hero who completely surprised me. Aurora and Emerson's story is packed with chemistry, humor, tenderness, and just enough spice to keep things interesting.

If you're looking for a romance that delivers a strong heroine, a swoony hero, beautiful settings, and a relationship built on partnership and trust, Hatch is absolutely worth picking up.

And if you're anything like me, you'll finish the book wishing you could spend just a little more time with Aurora, Emerson, and maybe a few of those chickens.

Thank you again, Steph Stewart, for the opportunity to read both versions of Hatch. It was an absolute pleasure following Aurora and Emerson's journey, and I'm excited to see what you write next. 💜📚✨

An investment in love

Overview
Aurora is the mastermind behind Hatch, a not-for-profit company investing in equal opportunity education. There’s only one problem: she’s weeks off filing for bankruptcy.

In walks Emerson, bigwig nepo-grandbaby, looking to leave his mark on the family legacy. Are his intentions to help Hatch pure, or does he have ulterior motives?

The Verdict
Hatch was a wholesome read. The concept of Aurora's company was super interesting, and I loved that we got a first-hand look at the impact it was having on communities.

The chemistry and banter between Aurora and Emerson were good when they were present, but could have been fleshed out further. Many decisions felt rushed and not fully explored, particularly the CEO portion of the story. That being said, other storylines were much more fulfilling, especially the resolution of the story.

As romance readers, we LOVE a well-executed trope, and the use of ‘only one room’ was a chef's kiss 🧑‍🍳. However, the ‘enemies-to-lovers’ felt rushed, ’good girl’ was not used appropriately, and the ‘he falls first’ trope just didn’t hit. I’m still asking myself, what initially attracted Emerson to Aurora? Was it her ‘boss bitch’ energy? Did her intelligence and looks make him want to get to know her? It could just be my memory failing me, but the progression of the relationship felt unbalanced. And not in a cute way.

There is nothing that I actively disliked about the book; I feel it just needed another hundred pages to build on some really solid foundations.

I look forward to seeing what Steph Stewart comes up with next.

This was read as an Advanced Reader Copy in exchange for an honest review.

In Hatch by Steph Stewart, the theme of making a positive difference in the world is beautifully interwoven throughout the story. It’s not presented as simple or idealistic – instead, the narrative highlights how difficult it can be to build something meaningful when so many forces seem determined to tear it down. There is a strong sense of persistence and resilience that carries through both the characters and communities that they are trying to support.

The MMC’s connection to the initiative feels rooted in that theme as the story unfolds. His investment in supporting ‘the little guy’ helps create a vivid sense of community, while also revealing a subtle but compelling misalignment between what he truly enjoys and the expectations placed on him in his role - doubled down by the legacy he is expected to uphold.
The pacing and gradual unfolding of each character’s background feels very intentional, revealing just enough at the right moments to shape both reader perception and the characters’ understanding of one another. There’s a compelling tension between what the reader knows and what the characters themselves are ready to confront (and share at times), which adds depth to their development.

One of the standout elements is the relationship dynamic. The FMC establishes clear, healthy boundaries – and, importantly, those boundaries are respected. Even when it’s difficult, the MMC gives her space to handle things on her own terms. When she invites him in, he shows up fully without hesitation. He doesn’t interpret her independence as rejection; instead, he actively works on himself to be a better partner. Their communication feels grounded and realistic, shaped by real-world pressures rather than existing in an idealized bubble.

Overall, I found hatch to be a light, cozy read with meaningful emotional layers. While the tone is generally warm, the story does touch on heavier, more traumatic themes from the characters’ pasts, so it’s worth checking the trigger warnings beforehand.

Hatch is an enemies-to-lovers romance featuring Aurora Walker and Emerson Hall.

Aurora has invested everything in her not-for-profit company, Hatch. She is very proud of her work, and the people it helps, but she is struggling financially and has been supplementing the cash flow using her own savings. On top of that, her ex-fiancé Wyatt Degrassy, is responsible for repeated publications that do not but her, or Hatch, in a positive light. Things do not look good.

Emerson is the head of Imagen, a company known for being corporate sharks. He is interested in Hatch but Aurora refuses to respond to any of the inquiries she has received from Imagen. However, when she feels like all hope is lost, she agrees to allow Emerson to spend two weeks with her to see how Hatch is run and what it does around the globe.

The two end up spending time together in remote Timor-Leste where he observes her. Aurora doesn't trust easily, but with time, she comes to trust Emerson. He is respectful and considerate. He isn't afraid to help out or get his hands dirty. Most importantly though, Emerson seems to truly see Aurora. More than anything, he wants to be there for her and take care of her. What that looks like though might not be what Aurora expected. Then again, the man she comes to know during their travels is not what she expected so...

I liked these two characters together. Both are independent and strong willed. Both are passionate, thoughtful and caring. While they come from different social worlds, they work well together. They have good chemistry and I enjoyed their interactions. Their relationship didn't feel forced or rushed. The two paired well and took time to work through their respective issues. Overall it was an enjoyable read.

Aurora is the founder of Hatch, a non-for-profit company that trains teachers in developing countries. The issue: Hatch needs funds to continue operating. The solution: Emerson, the big CEO of Imagen, who sees the potential of Hatch and proposes to invest in Aurora’s company.
The catch: Aurora has to allow him to see what her NGO does with his own eyes. This ends up with them travelling to Timor-Leste for 2 weeks.

My take
I was in a book slump and this fast paced book was exactly what I need to keep reading.

The story had a lot of potential, but, unfortunately, it lacked depth. Initially, I was very confused about what Hatch was about and why they were travelling to another country. This was only explained later on and I believe while they were already in the ground.

I missed some more background on the character’s lives: who are they, what did they experience until meeting each other (on top of Emerson’s trauma and Aurora’s past relationship), how did they meet their friends? I only got a glimpse of who they are as individuals.

I enjoyed seeing Emerson and Aurora becoming a couple, but not sure if it is my skeptic brain thinking that it was too fast and maybe a bit unprofessional how Emerson was flirting right from the start?

The D/s part was interesting and I noticed how Emerson cared for Aurora well being during the act, especially with her scars.

TL;DR
If you are looking for a fast paced, feel good book, not needing character background, this book can work for you.
I was just missing a few extra pages and days for them to fall in love.

I enjoyed this book a lot and would recommend it for those looking for a really quick and cozy romance.

I was so excited when I started this one and I loved the premise of it, but it didn’t quite get to 5 stars for me.

This was an ARC copy and the author has since added more details and a deluxe arc copy that has more of the details I felt may have been missing and I’m hoping to read soon and will update!

Although there was a lot of individual character building and I loved the characters, the romance did fall slightly flat. I think it could’ve used more instances of Emerson being the safety net that shows up where Aurora didn’t even know she needed him. As the eldest daughter who would just love for someone to take the reins and just take care of things every now and then, I was hoping for more of that.

I did love the storyline and you can tell the author truly cares about the work the characters are doing and I loved that there wasn’t the typical mid way break up/conflict scene. This love felt safe and steady, which is not a bad thing.. I personally just wanted more passion and more time for their relationship to build.

This is a great read for you if you’re into the following:
- cozy romance
- some open door spice (I think 2-3 scenes total)
- control kink
- a man who wants to take care of her
- themes of past relationship trauma

4🌟, 3🌶️

This was one of those books that felt genuinely comforting to read.

The premise immediately pulled me in, but what really made it stand out was the heart behind the story. You can tell the author genuinely cares about the work Hatch is doing, and that passion made the story feel meaningful and authentic. Aurora and Emerson were both easy to root for, and I found myself quickly invested in their journey.

I loved the blend of purpose, adventure, humor, and romance. Aurora’s determination made her such a compelling heroine, while Emerson quickly became one of my favorite parts of the book. Their banter was fun, their chemistry felt natural, and I especially appreciated that their relationship was built on trust, respect, and partnership. It was refreshing to read a romance that felt steady and supportive without relying on unnecessary drama.

While I would have loved a little more time with these characters and their relationship, that ultimately speaks to how much I enjoyed them. The combination of heart, humor, meaningful themes, and a lovable cast made this such an enjoyable read.

I walked away from this book feeling invested in both the characters and the work they were fighting for.

Hatch by Steph Stewart
4.5 out of 5 stars
ARC

Thank you, Steph, for this early copy. All parts of this review are of my honest opinion 💚

Hatch is a cute romance novel that shows just how much of a difference an organization can make in different communities with the right resources. This isn’t something that is simple and Hatch shows how difficult it can be to make things happen without the right resources and mindset.

In this book, we have our FMC, Aurora, as a founder for a nonprofit company that helps create schools, jobs, and teachers in developing countries that have gone through hardship. Funding is running out and she needs help. Enter our MMC, Emerson, who is a big CEO of a company. While this company doesn’t believe in the investment, Emerson does. Both him and Aurora go on a trip to be hands-on to provide him with an opportunity to see how they really operate and see things for himself. During this time, not only does he get even more invested, but a connection builds. Their communication, though slow, builds to become something more. It’s something we all probably wish for in some capacity and it really made me love the two of them together.

I think that Hatch shows depth between this communication and work aspect. It can be heavy at times, but that makes it real. I hope you all give it a chance 💕

Emotionally strong FMC•He will do anything for her MMC•forced proximity•one bed•workplace(ish)

I loved the chemistry with the FMC and MMC. I think the author did a great job initially introducing the characters and their inner circle of friends. Within the first few chapters you as the reader are caught up on the FMC’s struggles with her non profit and the MMC’s moral obligations to his family business.

This quickly moves into the plot and some of our tropes as this power couple goes to visit a remote location using hatch. While I never found myself wishing for the plot to move along faster, I would have LOVED for us to get some more back story with the FMC’s shady ex-fiancé, and the MMC’s childhood parental figure trauma. I feel like the motivations of the characters were very well outlined.

Overall I think this book is a great feel good summer read and am looking forward to future project from this author!

Thank you Steph Stewart for the opportunity to advance read and review Hatch.

I found Hatch to be a case of great idea, poor execution. I liked that Emerson is the golden retriever billionaire CEO who wants to help the world rather the typical money obsessed, bulldoze over the helpless type CEO. I also appreciated Aurora’s hesitation to take Emerson at face value.

Overall I found the story lacked the background details required for in depth character development. I liked Emerson and Aurora, but they both presented as side characters. When background was needed to further the plot it was typically presented as dialogue (so much dialogue) or as a flashback that didn’t really show more. Either way I found it a bit jarring as a reader.

In addition, the entire storyline taking place over less than a month’s time resulted in not enough time for a natural progression of their relationship. I know there is love at forced proximity, but there was no emotional depth to this relationship.

I think the story of Aurora and Emerson has a lot of potential, but I’m afraid I cannot give Hatch more than 2.5 stars.

I really enjoyed this fun, fast-paced romance novel! I also loved that it was based in Perth, Australia - as a fellow West Australian, that was such a nice touch.

I loved Aurora as a black cat, independent boss girl and the passion she had for Hatch and what she was trying to build. And Emerson… I absolutely love a dark hair, light eyes MMC! I really enjoyed his storyline of trying to turn his family’s legacy into something of his own and the challenges that came with that.

As a few other reviews mentioned, I think what would have made this a 5 ⭐ read for me would be a bit more character and relationship development between Emerson and Aurora, as well as more backstory and context around Hatch - I really enjoyed that part of the story.

I loved the bit of spice we got and Emerson’s need to take charge! 🌶️

Looking forward to supporting Steph as a local author and reading more from her!

A big thank you to the author for the opportunity to review this early copy. As always, these are my honest thoughts.

Complex and Intriguing

The characters, Aurora and Emerson have deep emotional and physical injuries. Both guard their hearts and display a hard outer covering. The sheer effort to overcome their pasts make this book well worth the read. They are trying to do good in a world that seems to treat that effort as a weakness. The relationship that blooms from their interactions tugs the heart strings. It grew from animosity to something more in a realistic way.

The author has a lovely voice. I felt immersed in the scenery and situations as well as the angst of both characters. It’s not a complaint, but there were situations and people that were inferred rather than described. For me, I felt the need for more fleshing out of the peripheral characters. Sometimes I went back to reread parts of the story to find references to past events and people. I especially found this with Aurora’s ex. Both exes played integral parts but were described in passing. That’s just my preference though.

A big thank you to the author for letting me be an arc reader on this book. This is my honest review of the book.

Aurora, running a non-profit organisation, Hatch, and Emerson, CEO of his grandfather’s company, Imagen.
Hatch is struggling with funding, and Emerson wants to help. Part of the agreement is that he’s going to follow her on her travels to visit the sites the project helps.

I liked the aspect of the non-profit work, and you can tell it’s something the author feels strongly about. Aurora and Emerson had such potential with their banter, but I would’ve loved some more depth to their connection, which sometimes felt forced and too insta-love/lust, without them knowing each other at all. The story sometimes felt confusing and lacked a bit of background for me to really understand the story and the characters. I really wanted to like this book, but I’m afraid I can’t give it more than 2.5 stars.

I received this book as an ARC from the author. All opinions are my own.

⭐️⭐️⭐️
🌶️🌶️- Given the description, I thought this book was going to be spicier. But, I wasn’t upset at all by the level of spice in it.

Overall, Hatch was a cute read and there were definitely a few nights I stayed up past my bedtime to see what would happen.

I loved learning about Hatch and the love Aurora had for her employees and for serving others. I also loved that Emerson is painted as a broody CEO but he’s truly a Cinnamon Roll/Golden Retriever.

I did feel that for a supposed enemies to lovers, things moved pretty fast. I also felt like Emerson and Aurora both lacked a little growth and depth. I didn’t find myself highlighting any lines that had me in awe at the imagery, but I never considered not finishing and enjoyed every time I picked it up.

Overall, a good quick beach read!

Thank you to the author for my ARC of Hatch!

This is a contemporary romance, with great spice. I am usually a romantasy reader, but starting to appreciate good contemporary romances, and this one really hooked me. I read it in 24 hours and didn’t want to put it down. The writing is witty and the banter was so good. I loved the premise and how the plot unfolded; the travel and all the new settings kept things interesting the whole way through.

I would’ve liked a bit more depth and complexity since things moved pretty quickly with the main characters and I found myself wanting a little more time with their story. But overall it was an enjoyable read with engaging characters, and a writing style and voice that work well. Very easy to devour.

Aurora and Emerson’s relationship is the heart of this debut author’s story, and it’s a solid start. Aurora’s not-for-profit organization needs Emerson’s organization’s help to secure funding after bad press from Aurora’s ex. However, the story falls flat due to the lack of tension in both their relationship and business dealings. Emerson is portrayed as controlling, which is meant to foreshadow his relationship tendencies, but he’s ultimately a kind and generous man. Of course, Aurora falls for him because of these qualities. The story is cozy, low-stakes, and sweet, but it could have benefited from more pining, a will-they-or-won’t-they dynamic, or even a few obstacles in the way of their instant attraction.

ARC: I kept staying up way too late just to read more about Emerson and Aurora! 🤭

He’s a CEO, she’s stubborn, independent, and convinced she can handle everything on her own. The book is marketed as an enemies-to-lovers romance, but personally, I’d say it’s more banter than actual enemies. Still, their chemistry? Absolutely undeniable. They had me giggling, blushing, and completely invested 🤭❤️‍🔥🌶️

I genuinely enjoyed this book and was always eager to see how the story would unfold. Emerson and Aurora were both easy to root for, and I especially appreciated how they communicated with and respected each other throughout the story.

I ended up reading this in about three days because I was having such a good time and never wanted to put it down ❤️‍🔥

I received an ARC in exchange for my honest review.

I thought the plot was okay. I enjoyed the knowledge about the NFP work that the FMC ran. You can tell this is something the author is passionate about.

I didn’t particularly feel like the characters had a lot of depth, and at times felt like the MMCs thoughts and/or choices felt a little unrealistic. I thought the relationship and feelings escalated very quickly, particularly on his side, without really knowing anything about her.

Overall I didn’t mind the book. It was an easy read, had a bit of spice, but it didn’t spark anything exciting for me.

What is better than the growing sexual tension of a strong female lead that protects her company and goals even when hot male CEO finally melts to her feet and wants to solve all her problems with his money?!

I loved this story of staying true to yourself and the principles that have guided you in business and life, even when life as you know it is crashing down.

I enjoyed that this book talked about hard topics and how the characters were working together through challenges. We all have physical and emotional scars and this made the characters more relatable.

"Hatch" will pull on your heart strings in ways you never expected reading a "romance" novel.

Emerson is everything you don't expect in a CEO. He is powerful but ready to change the world. Aurora stands by her cause and is determined to not let anything stand in her way.

Steph Stewart does an amazing job of bringing those 2 worlds together. But this isn't just another romance novel. Steph using her exceptional stroy telling skills to paint beautiful but heart breaking images of the towns Hatch impacts.

If you are a fan romance novels with a more important underlying plot, Hatch is the perfect book for you

Thank you Steph Stewart ARC for the opportunity!

The FMC, Aurora, and the MMC, Emerson, are both very likable characters. Plus, their banter is so good!

I felt like we needed to know more about what Auroras company, Hatch, does and their mission. It was like suddenly the characters were headed to a different country and you didn’t fully know why. I really enjoyed what we did get to learn and I would have loved to dive more into that!

Also, I felt like we needed more background on Emerson’s grandfather and his upbringing. It was obvious it played a big part in his role at Imagen and his trauma but we never learn why.

Overall, this was a good book!

Thank you to Steph Stewart for an ARC!

I am a big fan of The Hating Game (book, not movie). I was excited to see that this book used similar tropes. However, this book is very different. The beginning just kind of plops you into the story, there seem to be several chapters missing. The plot is barely in the story, it's all about the MFC and MMC's feelings and dialogue, but not a lot of story. I don't understand this immediately attraction or why they even like each other. There are some sensitive topics is in this book, but the abusive mother is never even discussed and completely glossed over.

ARC Read - Thank you for this opportunity 😁.

Hatch was a fun, engaging romance with great banter, plenty of chemistry, and characters I couldn’t help but root for.

Aurora’s fierce independence paired perfectly with Emerson’s determination, and I loved watching their relationship develop as they spent more time together. The tension, humor, and emotional moments kept me turning pages and invested in their journey.

While I wanted a little more in a few areas, I thoroughly enjoyed this story from start to finish. If you love enemies-to-lovers, forced proximity, and a hero who falls hard, Hatch is definitely worth adding to your TBR

The things I enjoyed:
Setting
Non-profit representation
Boundaries
History behind the story
Couple felt possible

This one was a solid ⭐️⭐️⭐️ for me. There is a great back story here and difficult themes presented with care. I wish I had a bit more relationship building and backstory. The forced proximity needed a bit more umph in terms of development.
I recommend picking this one up when you want the contemporary romance but feel like all stories start to read the same. Hatch will give you the romance with a different backstory!

Hatch completely stole my heart! Aurora and Emerson had the perfect opposites attract dynamic, and the slow burn was so worth the wait. I loved watching Emerson unravel all of Aurora’s assumptions about him while she challenged him at every turn.

The Timor-Leste setting felt vivid and meaningful, the banter was sharp, and the romance was packed with so much tenderness beneath the tension. Emerson is officially one of my favourite book boyfriends; competent, caring, and completely gone for Aurora.

And yes, the chickens absolutely deserve a special mention.

Quick and satisfying read. Good stand alone or perfect as a palet cleanser between bigger Books or a series. ⭐️
No over explanations. No out of the blue 3rd Act Break up. No unnecessarily outdrawn miscommunication. ⭐️
The Work Place Setting was more than just a trope or an after thought and relevant to the Story / Character arcs. refreshing! ⭐️
3.3 Stars

You get what the blurp and tropes promise. So far my favorite ARC to review in 2026

Read this book as an ARC! And I just have to say I enjoyed every single chapter!!!! 5/5 stars! I love that the book is partially set in Timor-Leste and the work that Hatch is doing, esp because I live in Asia and my husband has very similar goals for education for children. It’s so heartwarming to read about! Also, the banter between characters made me smile and laugh often. I genuinely loved this book and would recommend to all my book loving friends!

I enjoyed this book! You could definitely tell that Hatch is a concept that the author holds dearly and has put a sufficient amount of research into. I appreciated that the FMC maintained her strength and independence while naturally progressing into the relationship with the MMC. This book didn't follow the typical CEO/ paid partnership storyline, which was refreshing. Thank you to Steph Stewart for allowing me to read this advanced copy of Hatch!
