Ladies on top, Band 01
Mizuki looks like an ordinary office lady -- cute, quiet, and looking for Mr. Right -- but while she yearns for love, traditional romances where men take the lead just leave her cold. Then, at the age of 24, Mizuki discovers Shinomiya, a seemingly perfect co-worker who likes aggressive women, and she experiences a fiery awakening. Together, Mizuki and Shinomiya learn that reversing traditional gender roles can be both liberating and exciting!

This! This was such a great read. Thank you to Izzy and Shae for the recommendation. I truly appreciate the discussion of relationship roles and dynamics in this manga. It’s definitely more of slow burn in terms of plot and character development but I think we’ll get more in the second volume. Ladies On Top is more than just a couple having sex, it’s a study in power dynamics when it comes to sex something that I hope more people please feel comfortable talking about. I’m dying to get my hands on volume 2 but I’ll wait patiently.

I enjoyed this about three stars, but the message is so good that I'm giving it a four - not enough romances address the idea that there's no one right or wrong way to be (hetero)sexual. It's a theme that gets a lot of needed exposure in LGBTQIA+ work, but it's also one that applies to everyone.

I like the concept of a woman in her twenties coming to the realization that she wants to be the dominant partner in her sexual relations, but the pacing of the series drags as the characters flounder about in bed and in their heads as they figure things out. It doesn't help that the creator doesn't seem to discern any difference between being submissive and being pathetic, making her love interest hard to like or sympathize with.
I might pick up the next volume if I see it in the library catalogue, but I won't actively seek it out or miss it if I never come across it.

I like where story is possibly going, but it also felt like the worst kind of gender roles being inforced... it was honestly painful in parts but I'm hoping a rough beginning will lead to a beautiful relationship.
2.5 stars

OMG I loved this one! I can't wait for volume 2.
We dive into discussions about expectations on who should be leading a relationship in this volume and I can not wait to see how much more we explore in the future volumes.

I thought it was going to be just spice with an ok plot. But the plot actually made me go all the way to 4 stars.
Want to read vol 2 asap!

Okay, I’m rating this three stars because this is Steamship’s new “spicy” line of books for adults (particularly aimed at adult women) and ai felt like this fizzled.
The art was great, the storyline was great other than it was around 200 pages of the same scene repeated like four times. For something that was wrapped in plastic when it arrived, this was no more spicy than a menu at a Tex-mex restaurant.
For $13 I would expect the storyline to progress a little beyond them hemming and hawing around what they both want. I don’t even NEED the spicy bits, but I need Steamship not to hype something up to be what it’s not.
(I am also reading their other titles released under the “Steamship” headline and so far none of have been great…one of their new series is a reverse harem starting a high school girl….how is this for adults????)

recommended to me by a twitter mutual, this short but sweet read dives into deconstructing gender roles in romantic/sexual relationships and what it means to “have sex”— through the vehicle of femdom erotica.
mitsuki and shinomiya are both deeply fond of one another, and feel burdened by the what is typically expected of their respective genders in a relationship. mitsuki dislikes being coddled and romanced by her boyfriends— she wants to be the one taking the lead. on shinomiya’s side of things, as a man he’s expected to be dominant, in charge both romantically and sexually, when really he enjoys the opposite. though hesitantly at times, and with lots of communication, the two begin to explore the boundaries of sex with one another, and finding a way to love that fits them.
there was one assault scene, where shinomiya’s ex-girlfriend saki shows up at his house to try and get back together with him, to try and prove she’s ready for him now. she tries to force herself on shinomiya, but he pushes her away, telling her of his dedication to mitsuki and that he was still the same person as before. while not handled horribly, per se, i felt that this is the one part that could’ve been better. the assault is pushed aside and not mentioned again, and mitsuki and shinomiya have a romantic scene. i personally would have preferred they have a longer discussion about it.
besides that, i was pleasantly surprised by the inclusion of queer (gay, bisexual, non-binary) characters. i feel that it was perfect to include such figures though, in a manga about existing outside of society-built boxes for how you are supposed to love and exist.
this isn’t a long read, easily finished in an afternoon or two, but definitely a pleasant one. i have not been able to find a full english translation of all volumes online, but perhaps i will seek out the rest eventually, and i have enjoyed what i’ve read thus far.

I love Mizuki and Shinomiya’s relationship. They’re willing to accept all aspects of each other and determined to put in effort to make things work. Even their little awkward attempts were endearing to me.
I do wish their was more steaminess! It was dangled before the reader without fulfilling that promise.
Eagerly looking forward to volume 2.

This was absolutely delightful! I bought this on a whim because I saw it, and it seemed like it would be right up my alley…and it definitely was!
If there’s one thing that’s always going to get me in any romance storyline, is a domme woman and sub man. This is what waters my crops and clears my skin. All the moments of blushing from the male mc and the female mc turning on Seductress Mode? Excellence. Truly excellence. I loved it so much!
I also loved that this really had the characters have a lot of conversations to figure out what works for them. They both had preconceived notions of what their role “should” be in the relationship, and it was about their journey to realize that they don’t have to fit into that. Truly, a gift.
I would have loved for there to have been more page time where both of them fully embraced how they wanted their relationship to be, but at least there’s more manga volumes to come where they can explore that in full!
At the end, I’m sooooo happy I bought this! It was a great time.

Ladies on Top is a interesting look into a woman who wants to be dominate and a man who wants to be dominated, but neither can come to terms on what they want.
It's nice to see a subject matter of this simply because it's "different" and not the "norm" and yet it shows how fucked up "normal" view points can fuck someone up in life. Both characters here having many issues even having sex because of their past relationships and the norms that people put on others. I really liked to see them going through the motions of trying to feel each other out and do what each other wants, but also trying to be true to themselves. I wonder how this will go but a solid opening, a 3.5, I'll bump it to a 4.

This was sooooo goood. If you've read enough mangas but have also done research into Asian culture, you'll know that it is a conservative culture. This series is trying to tackle some great/difficult topics and the mangaka is doing it with great care. FL finds that she must be in control to feel more secure in intimacy and ML is slowly realizing that he wants less control. Both are trying to figure out what that means while creating a safe space for both to figure it out together. It's also exploring other topics that go beyond the control aspect in intimacy but can be seen as adjacent to.
I loved it. I'm invested.

I love this title!
We follow two people who have unconventional ways of showing love. The man is more submissive, whereas the woman is more dominant. Mizuki and Shinomiya's dynamic is really great, and I can't wait to see where their relationship goes. Volume two is going to get really spicy and interesting, and I'm looking forward to it.

This manga was so good! Not many published items discuss role reversal, and the author did such a great job of introducing that topic in this manga. You are introduced to the couple, and I am assuming you grow with them as the series progresses. It was a really fun read and I am super excited for the second one to come out next year!

4.25⭐️

I’m all for this new steamship line from seven seas but wasn’t sure what to expect from this series so only picked up the first volume. I’m absolutely get the rest of them as I love the plot that’s exploring their power dynamics in the bedroom with her more assertive and him taking a more submissive role. Looking forward to seeing what they find works for them.

No era lo que esperaba, creo que es la primera vez que leo josei así que en parte realmente no sabía qué esperar, y no hubo nada de historia en realidad, no pasó nada(?) pero realmente agradezco que no sea explícito JAJAJAJA.

This one started off pretty slow. It was mainly the MC's internal struggles with accepting the fact that they don't want a typical relationship. Hoping for more movement in vol 2.

was kinda waffling somewhere between a 3 and a 4 for the first half, but once we really start getting into shinomiya’s head and breaking down exactly why he struggles the way he does, the portrayal of his performance anxiety was just peak relatable for me, and the BEAUTIFUL COMMUNICATION, mizuki is just a phenomenal partner 👏👏 how can i do anything but round all the way up to full marks.
like damn, i showed up for the pegging but i’ll be staying for the healthy wholesome relationship, thank you

I’m happy this exists, but I’m not the target audience for submissive men/dominant woman dynamics.

Not what I expected, but very wholesome and sweet. They just wanna have a healthy relationship!
October 25, 2023
This first volume was a lot of repetitive scenes where Mitsuki is figuring out that she likes to be in charge and Shinomiya is in denial that he wants to be dominated. They both seem to have some issues they need to work through and I'm assuming the next volumes will explore further. I'm just not sure if I am interested enough to continue on with the series.

Maybe 1.5 stars. I didn't hate it. I thought Mizuki wanting to be the dominant one in the relationship, Shinomiya wanting to be submissive, and them being reluctant to go down that path because of traditional expectations were interesting ideas. Never read anything like it.
However, I didn't care for the characters, didn't ship the couple, and I found the storytelling confusing at times. To put it bluntly, I was kinda bored reading this.

high 3/low 4
I love the idea of dom gf/sub bf! sometimes it feels stifling with all the "alpha males" in books and manga so this is a nice change of pace! im interested to see how their relationship progresses. it is slow paced and feels a little repetitive, but it still had my attention.
