What’s this – a chicklit cover without a chick? Or a pair of high heels? Or a beautiful landscape? Yes, we went a completely different direction on this one with our paparazzi snapping pictures over the fence which is funny because Million Dollar Question is possibly one of our most romantic novels to date. But we just loved the whole look that Design For Writers came up with. Think those clouds are fluffy enough that it won’t be mistaken for a thriller and the book definitely has its gritty urban elements. (It also features the Isle of Skye which is as romantic as settings get.) What do you think? We’d love to hear your opinions.
Rosie is single mother of two boys. Her useless and cheater husband left her and now he is horrible and disgraceful enough not to pay child support at time. She gives the best of herself to be good mother, but that is so hard sometimes because lack of money. One day on her door knock one young woman, who looks like tax examiner, but she isn’t. Instead tax payment she gives Rosie check of million dollars. Why? What she will do with that money? Olivia is very successful woman her life is on very high level. She enjoy in her money and high esteem among elite. Managing with millions dollars she is the best, but one wrong investment and one wrong man will costs her career and life that she is used to. Suddenly Olivia becomes homeless and broke. What she will do? What she supposes to do set and cry till the rest of her life or she will find the way? I was enjoying very much in this book. Why I’m not surprised!? I will tell you why, because I’m huge fan of Ellie Campbell’s books, I’ve read all their books and I could tell this book is cherry on top. The story is well written and very funny and realistic with one lesson in center of all and that is changes happen, we suppose to accept them and live the best we can. There are mysteries one from where comes million dollars in Rosie’s hands and the other one is where is that man who stole Olivia’s money and life. The best thing in it is that how those two women learn to live their lives with huge changes with which fate challenge them. Olivia and Rosie two different women with two different lives, but one fate they suppose to live with obstacles that life bring them. Olivia is strong woman with big ablates and big work ethic, but she will be crush by shame and bankruptcy. Rosie is one modest and diligent woman, a good mom and good person. She will suppose to dealing with big money. If you want to read and laugh till tears via great story and great female characters then grub this book! This could be a tough review to write, only because I have to watch what I say not to give away too much. I wouldn’t want to ruin the book for anyone. This is definitely a book that you want to pick up and not have any spoilers.
Million Dollar Question is the story of two worlds. The world of having money and the world of not having money. Olivia came from a world of money and then lost it all. Rosie came from the world of not having money and then received a huge winning. It was interesting to see how their worlds changed when their circumstances changed. Neither character was prepared to handle their new lives and struggle immensely.
Rosie realizes that not everything is perfect and happy when you have money. While Olivia realizes that not having money is not the end of the world. I enjoyed both characters. I felt sorry for Rosie. Yes, she had money, but she lost so much with that money and quickly realized who her true friends were and that she did not have as many as she thought. I loved Olivia. Watching her struggle to make ends meet made her a more realistic person to me. Seeing her find her true self and realize what is important was the perfect way for Olivia to come out on top of her life.
When Ellie Campbell gave away the way these two characters were linked I was shocked. I never saw it coming. My only real complaint, or wish, is that they had explored that connection a little more. Both characters accepted their link without much question and I felt that neither Olivia or Rosie would have been that easy.
I love Ellie Campbell. I have read a few of their books and have always been entertained by them. I certainly recommend checking out Million Dollar Question and the rest of their books.
Million Dollar Question is a book that most chick lit lovers will enjoy. It has a good plot, an array of characters that vary from quirky Scots to stuck-up-your-own-arse mothers. It's a pretty long read with a medium flow narrative. Told separately by strangers Rosie and Liv who are both completely different personalities and each have their own issues and conundrums.
Myself personally I have to admit that I didn't like the flitting back and forth between Rosie and Liv. I felt like just as I was getting into the story and understanding the character a bit more I was moved straight on to the other. In the end it did frustrate me and I felt like I was just getting nowhere. I guessed early on what the ending was going to be as it was quite obvious, so overall I just felt a bit bored. There was just nothing I wanted to know from the story when I was half way through, no pull, excitement or intrigue. That is a huge shame because like I said earlier the plot is a really good one.
I'm hoping you will all take a chance on Million Dollar Question though, because like I always say we all have different opinions on reads and I'd love to know what you thought of it.
A Million Dollar Question is two different Womens stories in one book. First we have Olivia she worked hard to get to the top where she is comfortable with money and power she can have pretty much anything she wants. Than we have Rosie a single Mom with twin boys she works hard but it seems there is never enough money for her small family they just barely scrap by. Than a knock at Rosie's door changes everything and a word ofa scandal reaches Olivia'sears , and their worlds are completely turned upside down. They are both thrown into a new life which neither is prepared for or has ever experienced. Rosie realizes not everything is great when you have money, friendships fall apart and life can be miserable when everyone wants something from you. Olivia learns losing all her money was a great lesson she reconnects with reality and eventually her family. What do these women's stories have to do with each other? That you'll have to read the book to find out as i don't give spoilers.
I love all the books by this dynamic duo, but I just adored MILLION DOLLAR QUESTION!!! This book is hilarious, but also thought provoking, serious and also light at times...such a wonderful blend of the many emotions we all feel. I loved that two very different characters were brought together, because in life that happens all the time. Life is all about the decisions we make, the choices we make, the friends we chose and the path we take....there are millions of ways any one person's life could turn out. This book has lessons wrapped into the very well plotted and original story. One thing is for certain when you pick up this book to read....you will have an amazing time reading this book and getting caught up in this story. These two ladies, Lorraine and Pam, are gifted in the art of story telling. I have such a wonderful time reading their writing! Keep them coming ladies...your fans count on you!!! 5 stars
Meet Rosie and Olivia; two women who lead completely different lives but somehow end up in similar situations, having more in common than they ever expected. New Yorker Olivia Wheeler has given it her all, working all hours, to get to the top. She leads a comfortable life, making lots of money and being used to luxury surrounding her wherever she goes. But what happens when a big financial scandal takes all of this away from her? Rosie Dixon is a struggling single mother with two sons who works hard to make sure she can provide for her family. She knows what it is like to just have a few pounds left to finish the month with, so it comes as an absolute shock when she unexpectedly wins a million pound jackpot. Both Olivia's and Rosie's worlds are suddenly turned upside down as they are forced to face the importance of money, friendship and family.
Another enjoyable read from Ellie Campbell and probably my favourite from the ones I've read so far! 'Million Dollar Question' has two main storylines at its core; one with a focus on rich New Yorker Olivia and the other on single mum Rosie who completely unexpectedy wins a million pounds. I liked both Olivia and Rosie; they're completely different but just as fascinating, and I really loved reading their stories and discovering how everything worked out for them. I loved how the author managed to connect the two storylines to one another. It is quite an original read and I think most of us occasionally dream about winning a lot of money, or take the money we have for granted, without actually realising how it influences our lives and could change everything within a matter of days.
While there is a good and varied cast of characters, I did kind of miss being able to really connect with the characters, especially Olivia and Rosie. I would have loved to have learned more about both of their pasts; Rosie's marriage to Charlie, Olivia's struggles to get to the top. Since the story is quite quick-paced and a lot of things happen, I do understand the choice to perhaps not go into too much detail, but I personally did miss the detail! The author's writing seems to be getting better and better with each novel, though, and I am once again curious to see what Ellie Campbell will come up with next! Overall, 'Million Dollar Question' is an entertaining, original, quick-paced read that I ended up really enjoying. If you haven't picked up an Ellie Campbell novel yet, 'Million Dollar Question' is a great choice, especially for women's fiction fans!
Ellie Campbell is or should I say are the authors who always manage to surprise me with their books. Their books are never simple stories falling in one mold or genre. Their stories are unexpected stories full of surprises and twists that leave you guessing right till the end.
Million Dollar Question is another awesome read from the authors which had me so hooked and completely unable to make out the future events in the book. Every twist and turn came as a surprise and it seemed like nothing in the story went according to my expectations. This is a rare feat and had me thoroughly enjoying the novelty of the story's execution.
Two women's lives change when one unexpectedly wins a huge lottery and the other loses everything in her life from her job to her prestige. How they cope with these new developments and how there destinies are connected is a the crux of the story.
The reader is taken on a tumultuous ride to witness the journey of these two heroines' struggles through intense emotions, some heartbreak, heartwarming romance to the final recognition of self and a memorable happily-ever-after.
The writing style is engaging, simple and frank. The characters are normal people, often flawed and each trying to live their life and understand it as each new day dawns. Rosie and Olivia were such contrasting characters and each with their own charm. I loved both their characters and while I hated Olivia, at first, with her snobbish attitude, later after watching her turn her life around, I really felt impressed by her and rooted for both, Olivia and Rosie's happily-ever-afters. The other characters in the story are also memorable and quickly make a place in your heart. Each has one or the other lesson to teach about life and after finishing the book, I did feel more enlightened towards the workings of the world.
Swift paced with suspense, mystery and heartfelt romance, I loved reading Million Dollar Question and give it 4.5 out of 5. Strongly recommended to everyone, I look forward to reading more books by Ellie.
I received the book from the authors to read and review and I am very thankful to them. The above review is my honest and unbiased opinion and in no way influenced.
This is a compelling tale of two very different women who face a number of life altering decisions. Rosie Dixon is in her early thirties, a single mum who is facing redundancy. Her life completely changes when she wins a million pounds. One minute financially strapped, and then a millionaire. She is shocked at the greed, ingratitude and viciousness of people and accidentally stumbles upon a secret that will change the course of her life permanently.
Olivia at the age of 33 takes the new financial world by storm. However when four billion dollars in missing funds is lost on the stock exchange and she becomes broke and flees to her friends in London. She hadn’t realised when she was rich that she was cushioned against so many minor unpleasantries. In order to survive she sells her clothes and jewellery and rents a small shabby apartment and works as a waitress. She then meets a guy called Marcus, who wants to do a documentary on the rich and poor divide and gives her a place to stay as long as he can interview her.
How both women learn to cope with their new change in circumstances is remarkable and keeps the reader hooked through a number of dramatic twist and turns by these two very likable heroines that are about to discover a shocking revelation that will change their entire existence.
Ellie Campbell has created a good solid plot that’s original with adorable characters’ and I would definitely recommend this book to all readers of contemporary romance.
Disclosure: I received this book free from the author in exchange for an honest review. This does not affect my opinion of the book or the content of my review.
Written by sisters Pam Burks and Lorraine Campbell writing under the pseudonym ‘Ellie Campbell’, Million Dollar Que$tion is that rare breed of novel classed as ‘chick-lit’ but which often avoids the overused cliches of this genre. It’s an enjoyable, well written story which which includes elements of romance throughout but this isn’t overplayed or made too cheesy. Those tropes are there, but they’re done in a charming way!
Similarly the characters aren’t placed into too defined, black or white categories. They have their faults at times but that makes them seem more real. Most of them are brilliantly crafted, realistic characters that we can probably identify in the people around us, whether we like them or not.
Olivia and Rosie are both quite different people but are both hugely likeable in their own ways, just as Olivia’s ‘friend’ from university seems a nice enough woman and then we hear that sadly all-too-familiar chime of “Meanwhile…’ bitterness crept in, ‘all these refugees and no-good slackers get it all for free” and we think, I know someone like that…
Similarly even Rosie’s brother Paul succumbs to the lure of big bucks and his greed tramples through his good nature. We know life often isn’t a fairy tale and there aren’t clear-cut ‘good’ and ‘bad’ people; instead Ellie Campbell creates interesting, three-dimensional characters that are believable.
The story was fun to read and got right into the story from the very beginning- no hanging about! It’s well written and is easy to read; I genuinely enjoyed every word and finished it really quickly.
I hope there will be many more to come from Ellie Campbell!
Many thanks to the authors for providing a copy of this novel in return for an honest review!
This book is certainly a million dollar laugh--Ellie Campbell always has a magical way of producing a book that elicits hours of laughter and glee in her books from her readers and this one is no different!
I will have to watch how I word this review as to not give any spoilers--but this has got to be the sweetest book I’ve read yet by Ellie Campbell!
There are two worlds represented in this book and how luck can change in a matter of seconds. One Character Olivia, who worked hard to get to the top of the ladder where she has become so accustomed to and comfortable at. With money, and power, she could pretty much have anything in the world that she wants. Then we have, Rosie, a single mother of twin boys who slaves away to provide for her small family but only ever has enough to scrap on by. However, one knock at Rosie’s door, and word of a scandal that reaches Olivia’s ears, flipped their worlds completely upside down. Sequentially, they are both introduced into a new life that neither are prepared for or had ever experienced. As the story goes by, Rosie quickly realizes that with money, not everything is sunshine and rainbows. Friends fall apart, and life in general can be quiet miserable when everyone is out to get a piece. For Olivia though, losing all her money may have been a great life lesson, a reconnection back to reality and ultimately . . . family. What do these two characters have to do with each other in the story, you may ask? Well, that is the big bang you will have to experience for yourself!
The author, Ellie Campbell, gave me a copy of this work in exchange for my review.
Ellie Campbell brings woman a strong sense of empowerment in one woman who feels as though she’s lost it all and another who really had little left to lose.
Readers meet Rosie at her lowest. Her husband has left her and she’s on her own with twins. She had a comfortable life with Charlie but now that he’s gone, she’s living on a Council Estate while he lives the high life paying child support only when the whim strikes.
Olivia is living the high life attending a charity event when we meet her. She appears to flow through her life concealing a manic nature under the surface. When she loses the money, power and relationship she held in high esteem upon learning that her boss has scammed everyone, she discovers how truly out of touch with her life she’s become.
Campbell’s characters are well developed and fully realized. All of the background characters and people that Olivia and Rosie meet in their lives are fleshed out and developed so that each scene is wholly integral to the overall effect of the work.
Having been a fan of Campbell`s for a while, there is a seamlessness in the way the sister team writes that is perfected in “Million Dollar Question. “ Technically very cleanly written, the setting is clearly English but all slang used will be recognizable to US and Canadian readers.
“Million Dollar Question” is a down to earth and intelligent kind of story. While encouraging women to look at the bigger picture of life it also urges us to seek the strength from within.
New Yorker Olivia Wheeler, goes from wealth and success to bankruptcy and shame. Struggling single-mother Rosie Dixon, wins an unexpected million pounds. While Olivia struggles to survive, she flees to London. Rosie discovers sudden wealth comes with a ton of problems. Two strangers who have never met, have no clue that each is affecting the other’s destiny.
A well written story of, love, loss, redemption, life altering decisions and secrets revealed. I liked Olivia, seeing a wealthy woman lose it all was devastating. Rosie, struggling to have a nice life for her children is a very likable woman. Watching her win a large sum of money and how her life suddenly changed was intense.
Also the twists, turns, drama and ultimately secrets made this a true five star read. Both women had self discoveries, and life changing situations. Each had to make tough choices and learn to live with their new lives. The plot is original, Olivia and Rosie are likable. I strongly recommend Million Dollar Question to all.

Rosie is a single mother of two. She does her best to provide for the boys. It would be so much easier if her ex would just send his child support on time. Still, Rosie is happier being single. Oliva is living the good life. Money, prestige and power guide her movements. She's convinced her life can only improve with each day. These women are both hoping for a change. Neither could imagine the changes life has in store for them. Worlds apart but still they manage to have their paths entwined.
What a wonderful lesson this book teaches all of us. The message being the grass isn't always greener on the other side. I laughed a lot while reading this one and I loved it. Terrific writing with a well plotted story and characters we can all relate to makes this one sensational. You'll be questioning yourself the way these two women do. I felt as if this book was preparing me for changes in my own life. You can't go wrong with this book.
I found no issues with this one.
I gave this one 4 cheers out of 5 because it really speaks to me. ~Copy of book provided by author in exchange for a fair review~
Whether you win or lose a lot of money your fate could be the same--people will either try to use you or lose you. No matter what you do--you never seem to get it right. Add to that no self confidence and you have our newest millionaire-recently divorced Rosie Dixon. Olivia Wheeler, our other side of the coin, lost all her money (a considerable amount) due to an unscrupulous employer. She was an up and coming Hedge Fund Manager until her boss caused umpteen people-including herself to literally lose a lot of money--in her case--all of it.
Will these two totally separate people be able to reconcile their new lives? This book will take you through almost every scenario that could possibly happen. Their lives start to inter twine and then something wonderful happens--but you will have to read the book to find out what that is!! This is a definite feel good book with a couple of lessons we should all remember. Oh, you may need some tissues at parts but I also found myself cheering these two on with hope in my heart and a smile on my face! Million Dollar Question
I loved this book! This is my favorite Ellie Campbell book so far. I’ve loved all of their books that I’ve read, but this is the top on my list.
Olivia and Rosie are such great characters! They rise above all the stuff life has dealt them. They’re such strong characters, and I adore them! Actually, all of the characters in this story are great. They are well-developed and very real. The way the story comes together and the characters intertwine is just so good! The relationships that are explored in Million Dollar Question are very real. The relationship between Rosie and her mom is strained, but I love the reconciliation in their story.
The settings in this story are very diverse and great. I want to move to Scotland now. Though I’m told there is a lot of rain :) The way the village in Scotland is described will make you want to pack your bags and go!
This story makes you believe that all things are possible. I highly recommend Million Dollar Question to all of you chick lit lovers! I give it 5 stars!
This is a very enjoyable book with realistic characters. Olivia is a hard hitting go getter who is very successful. She loses everything and has to start from the bottom. Rosie is a hard working single mum who is struggling to make ends meet. She unexpectedly wins a fortune and not only has to deal with being a winner but with the changes this stroke of luck brings which can be good and can be bad. The story is how the women deal with their personal change of fortunes. There are many dramatic twists and turns.
I thoroughly enjoyed this book. It is about two women who seemingly have nothing in common. Olivia, a successful business woman, loses everything while Rosie, a struggling single mother wins a million pounds. The story is about both of their struggles and as I read I just kept wondering how and where their lives were going to intersect. There were tantalizing bits here and there, but no, not yet. Kept me glued to the book. I enjoyed both of their stories. Both had ups and downs and even found a bit of romance. I loved it.
Borrowed this free on Prime and didn't finish it, I skimmed the last 45% because once I saw the 'big reveal' coming a mile off I just stopped caring at all. I thought it would be a good holiday read, it wasn't ... it was a combination of completely unbelievable and tiringly predictable.
Which should be fine, I mean a book about winning a million dollars doesn't suggest veracity or accuracy but I should at least have been able to believe in the characters.
There was nothing offensively bad - just all a bit meh so I don't want to rip it to pieces. Just really not for me.
Good Story with a happy ending . At first with all the characters it was a little hard for me too follow but soon i got used to all the characters . Olivia, Rosie, Zac , Marcus , Dee ....I really enjoyed this story . In exchange for an honest review i recieved this book for free
Funny, exciting, even an occasional tug at the heartstrings. The prose is clean and the flow is great. My only complaint is there were so many characters it got hard to keep them all straight.
I received this novel in exchange for an honest review.
Million Dollar Question by Ellie Campbell brings us on the journey of Rosie and Olivia, two very different people from very different backgrounds, yet somehow their lives continue to cross paths during a very crucial time. Olivia has just fallen prey to a very large financial scheme and lost everything she owned. On the other hand, Rosie, a single mom, has just won a million pounds. As they both learn to live within their new realities, they end up learning far more about themselves than they thought possible.
This novel is definitely a chick lit, but not as chick-litty as others I’ve read. Hopefully that makes sense. Honestly, the novel was just okay. It was a nice piece of fluff, but I found it a touch drawn out for my liking. And I really didn’t care for the writing style, either. The cuts and breakaways made it seems as though when Campbell was writing, she pictured it as a TV show or movie and how they do the dramatic scene cuts to show pivotal plot points. Some people may enjoy that style. I did not.
The characters weren’t too endearing, either. In fact, I may have liked Charlie the most and he was supposed to be the no-good cheating husband. He was the only one who seemed to think and act logically, or like an ordinary person at all. The novel tried to get into deep and thought-provoking ideas with the character of Marcus and his documentary, but it didn’t really work to bring depth to the novel unfortunately. That being said, the twist that connects the two characters was interesting, if not a bit contrived. We often forget, or don’t realize at all, how our lives can connect to so many other people but we just miss each other by mere moments.
Overall, if you want to read a fluff piece, Million Dollar Question is your next novel.
This is a good premise executed poorly. The story of two women, one going from rags to riches and the other from riches to rags, each learning that the grass is not always greener on the other side of the fence.
It would have made for a five star rating on that alone, had it not been for the horrible writing style, the flip-flop story-telling, the jagged pacing and the fact that here you have two different writers trying to pull off a sham that they are one and the same person. You are two separate people. Act like it.
The claim that the slang used throughout the entire book would be easy to read by Americans is false. It was almost impossible to make headway when you have to stop to look up a foreign term every other sentence. After a while I decided to use a slang to describe what I was reading. "Tosser". In the words of Beth Dutton- "mind translating that to English? I don't speak dipshit".
I'll wait for the American version and the jacket to read "written by the Campbell sisters" before I finish this. Hopefully with a more consistent pace, more coherent writing style and 1/3 less word count. Good luck ladies.
Rosie looks at her two boys in awe and is proud of who she is, but financially she is struggling big time and while she loves her job as a teaching assistant, things start to look a bit grim when they start talking job cuts. She cant help feeling a little bitter about the fact that her husband ran off with a customer from his car dealership. But then her life takes a little twist when she wins a million pounds
Olivia on the other hand is a high flyer and living a fast paced life where work consumes her every waking hour.
These two womens storylines run in parallel until all of a sudden they intersect.
A great holiday read and brilliantly written. Very entertaining with a large part of it set in the Isle of Skye from where I have just returned from my holiday which made it even more entertaining.
Overall I did enjoy this rags to riches and riches to rags story. I did find that the writing was a little different between the two main characters as they were obviously written seperately by the two co-authors. This was more prominent at the start and then seemed to smooth out, or maybe I got used to it. Sometimes the story seemed to take ages to get anywhere and other times it was sped up so much that the action all happened and I, as the reader, only got the aftermath. This was a bit disconcerting. Also, I guessed the twist well before the end, but maybe the reader is meant to. I was still interested in the characters but overall thought the book was a little long.
I stopped reading this slow moving book about 40% in. I could not figure out the purpose of the story, and while I’m slightly curious about how it ends and how the main characters lives eventually intersect, the writing was not compelling enough for me to read another 3.5 hours to find those things out. To top things off, the main character (Rosie) comes across as weak and slightly foolish and her supposed best friend a bit petty and jealous, so I didn’t even care for the characters I was reading about. I did not find the first part of this overly long book enjoyable and do not recommended it.
To Have Or Have Not – Wealth, Love, Family, Friends, Career – All In This Novel! This is a very good novel! It is quite a page-turner and has something for just about everyone. This is a clean novel that explores the having, losing and regaining of wealth, love, family, friends and career. The plot is complicated and wonderful. It is written in British English which makes it a slower read for me, but very enjoyable. I have read several of this author’s works and love them all! (Ok, actually it is a pair of sisters who write as this author, sheesh!)
I'm sorry. I can't get into this one and I quit about halfway through. The concept was interesting and I thought it was a great topic to explore: how money changes people. I don't like the characters, to be honest. Olivia is a spoiled brat (although she does humble herself after a while) and Rosie is a doormat. The plot is slow and the whole thing is depressing. And, they're both surrounded by horrible people. I'm sure that they change by the end of the book, but I don't have the patience or interest to get there. Also, I'm American, so the British slang is throwing me off.
