This was a new one. Or at least a trope I haven’t read recently. Hunters. Hybrids. Witches. Vampires. Werewolves. Enemies to lovers. The whole shabang.
I do wish the dialogue was more instead of “I told him XYZ” or “I told her XYZ” but that’s personal preference I think.
Diego is a big ole softy trying his best to avenge his late wife. Lyric is fighting demons from her past. Together they can really take on the world. And they do.
I would have liked much more about Iris, she felt a little like an afterthought. But she was sweet. And I love a sweet character.

This one drops you straight into a world where nothing feels clean—not the choices, not the characters, and definitely not the lines between right and wrong. There’s this constant sense of danger running through the entire story, but it’s not just external… it’s built into who these characters are.
Lyric is the kind of main character that immediately stands out because she doesn’t try to soften herself. There’s a hardness to her that feels earned, shaped by everything she’s been through, and it shows in the way she moves through the world. She’s controlled, calculated, and very aware of what she has to do to survive—but underneath that, there’s still something more fragile trying not to surface. That internal conflict adds so much weight to her character, especially as things start to unravel around her.
And then there’s Diego… and from the start, there’s friction. Not the kind that fades quickly either—it lingers, sharp and unresolved. He has his own motivations, his own pain driving him, and you can feel that he’s not someone who’s going to trust easily. Their dynamic leans heavily into that push and pull where neither of them is fully willing to give in, but they also can’t completely walk away from each other.
The tension between them is one of the strongest parts of the story. It’s layered with mistrust, shared goals, and just enough emotional undercurrent to make everything feel a little more complicated. It’s not soft, it’s not easy, and it definitely doesn’t come without conflict. Even when they’re working together, there’s this constant sense that things could shift at any moment.
The world itself has that darker, underground feel where everything operates just slightly out of sight. There’s corruption woven into it, and you can feel that nothing is as straightforward as it seems. The deeper the story goes, the more that sense of unease builds—like every answer just leads to something bigger and more dangerous underneath.
What really stands out is how much this story leans into morally gray territory. There aren’t clear-cut heroes here, and that’s what makes it work. The choices being made aren’t always clean or easy, and sometimes they come with consequences that linger. It adds a level of realism to a supernatural setting that keeps everything feeling grounded despite the darker elements.
There’s also a strong emotional thread tied to revenge, survival, and control. Both Lyric and Diego are carrying their own pasts into this, and it shapes everything about how they act, how they trust, and how they connect. That shared weight is what slowly starts to shift their dynamic, even if neither of them fully acknowledges it.
The pacing keeps things moving without losing that tension. It gives just enough space for the character dynamics to develop while still keeping that underlying sense of urgency present the whole time.
Overall, this sits firmly in that darker paranormal romance space with heavy tension, complicated dynamics, and characters who aren’t afraid to exist in the gray. It’s intense without being overwhelming, and it keeps you slightly on edge the entire time.
If you enjoy rivals-to-lovers with sharp chemistry, morally gray characters, and a world where trust is earned the hard way, this is definitely one to pick up.

Loved Diego and Lyric's story, it was a hard one to put down, so I didn't 😂. I ran through it like my life depended on it. I didn't want it to end. It's a rollercoaster ride with twists and turns, secrets and so much more. Great characters storyline and plot. Highly recommend.

Deceptive shadows was one of those books that kept me hooked from the beginning to end. If you love books with supernatural beings and kick butt fmc than this is the story for you. Lyric is for sure a strong fmc who will fight for what's right.

this book was so well written! I loved lyric and Diego and this story was very moving. Highly recommend this and I'm so excited to read more of Kimber Stones work.
