Genie McQueen Book 2

Genie McQueen never thought she’d be an alpha.

She grew up apart from her pack, trying to hone her dangerous magical gifts, while her twin brother Ben stayed home to be groomed for a leadership role. But after proving her mettle to her uncle Callum, the King of the South, she’s suddenly found herself the alpha of New Orleans.

As she tries to adapt to her new, powerful position—and a blossoming relationship with the werewolf outcast, Wilder Shaw—Genie is confronted with something that only the witch part of her can fix.

It seems the sorority sisters at Delta Phi have been going missing, but leaving everything they own behind. Those remaining in the house have reported strange happenings since the girls have gone missing. With no bodies, and no clues, Genie’s ex Cash turns to her for help on behalf of his new girlfriend.

Can Genie unravel the mystery of the vanished girls, maintain order in the New Orleans pack, and keep herself alive long enough for a night out with Wilder?

Genie’s about to find out what’s scarier—a haunted house or going on your first date ever in your twenties.

Sierra Dean is a reformed historian. She was born and raised in the Canadian prairies and is allowed annual exit visas in order to continue her quest of steadily conquering the world one city at a time. Making the best of the cold Canadian winters, Sierra indulges in her less global interests: drinking too much tea and writing urban fantasy.

Ever since she was a young girl she has loved the idea of the supernatural coexisting with the mundane. As an adult, however, the idea evolved from the notion of fairies in flower beds, to imagining that the rugged-looking guy at the garage might secretly be a werewolf. She has used her overactive imagination to create her own version of the world, where vampire, werewolves, fairies, gods and monsters all walk among us, and she’ll continue to travel as much as possible until she finds it for real.

She’s also a book lover (of course!), obsessive collector of OPI nailpolish and the owner of way too many pairs of shoes.

I’m having a hard time not comparing Genie McQueen to her older sister, Secret. Not only do they share DNA, but they are both half-breeds, have a knack for trouble, and with the introduction of Santiago, another love triangle is most likely already in progress. I was on the fence after BAYOU BLUES, and now after reading BLACK MAGIC BAYOU, I have one foot firmly on the walk-away-from-this-series side of the hedge. Book 3 or bust!

Genie taps into her witchy side in this installment, and the author crafted a plot to match. Two of her wolves are suspected of murder, and there’s something bizarre going down in the Delta Phi house. These threads cross paths more often than you’d think, and each problem has a magical fix, so other than a little posturing when McQueen’s twin brother shows up to ruffle her Alpha feathers, this story was only moderately furry.

After skirting around her attraction to Wilder Shaw in the previous volume, the protagonist’s resistance crumbles, and she takes the sexy mechanic for a ride. I was happy with this turn of events until Genie’s ex walked back into her life with his new girlfriend. Fortunately, that didn’t play out the way I’d expected however, little did I know that there was a second love interest bullet already in the chamber.

I have nothing against Santiago, and in a lot of ways he might be better suited for McQueen than Wilder. But, Secret’s romantic entanglements were probably my least favourite aspect of that series, so I don’t want a do-over with her sibling. That beef aside, Dean did dangle enough bait in front of my face to get me to trudge on thanks to the continuation of the burnt corpse mystery, and… Mercy.

The best part of BLACK MAGIC BAYOU was the bonus A HARMLESS LITTLE SECRET short at the end.

Genie McQueen is back and ready to rock and roll in the second installment of Sierra Dean’s spin off series-Genie McQueen. Fans will remember meeting Genie in Dean’s parent series-Secret McQueen. Genie is Secret’s sister-same mom, different dad. Unlike Secret, Genie is half werewolf and half witch. Like Secret, she is a magnet for trouble. Recently made alpha of New Orleans by her uncle Callium, the King of the South, she is slowly coming to terms with her added responsibility.

When two of her pack are arrested for suspicion of murder, Genie involves herself in the police investigation to help prove their innocence. At the same time, her ex boyfriend Cash requests her help in locating some missing girls at his girlfriend’s sorority house. Plus, her twin brother Ben is in town intent on causing trouble. Using her wits and magic, Genie dives in to try and tries save her boys, find the missing girls, kick her brother’s butt, and get herself a first date with her hot new boyfriend.

Black Magic Bayou is a strong, well written sequel that picks up where book one, Bayou Blues, leaves off while helping to re-familiarize readers with Genie McQueen and her small slice of the McQueen world while introducing some new characters and setting up future plotlines. Jam packed with action, humor, romance, and some seriously scary things that go bump in the night, Genie’s first true test as the Alpha of New Orleans requires her to

Heavily character driven, Dean balances on a fine line with her latest heroine whose character and situation similarities to her sister are noticeable yet Dean admirably strives to keep Genie her own person. This likable, engaging heroine has the powers and skills, neither which guarantee she will survive whatever is thrown her way, and it makes for an enjoyable ride. I like that her magic isn’t treated as something horrible to be hidden in fear of the consequences. She embraces both sides of her nature; not seeing herself as an either/or.

It helps that Genie was raised in the pack and received training as a witch and that she doesn’t have to deal with all the extra baggage her sister was forced to drag around with her. It also helps that unlike Secret, Genie only has to answer to Callium (and possibly her grandmother).

The two conflicts ride side by side with Genie trying to solve them both, though I felt the sorority conflict was more tighter and more evolved. Dean uses one to solve the other, effectively morphing them into one with some interesting results. Plenty of twists and turns takes us on an fast paced enjoyable investigative ride that leaves you a little shocked at results. Genie’s own actions show us the surety of future issues with her dual nature as does the introduction of Santiago-a male witch who offers her some warnings. He is an interesting mixture of appeal for Genie; both in terms of attraction and power and that worries me a little. He is what Genie could be if she practiced her magic more, a powerful draw, that could lead to possibility of a love triangle. As Genie seems to have made the choice to be with Wilder, I hope this is just a feeling on my part.

The ending resolves the main conflict though we are left with some open plot lines that I’m sure will cause Genie some problems in the future. A small cliffhanger scene at the very end only solidifies that.

Black Magic Bayou gives us another McQueen to love and cheer for and I can’t wait to see what Dean has in store for Genie and the pack next.

It’s been a few months since Genie McQueen, werewolf princess and witch, was named Alpha of the New Orleans pack. Despite her surprise in the promotion, Genie will do right by her pack.

Genie is about to be tested on that theory big time when she’s pulled into not one but two mysteries. The first involves a couple of her pack members supposedly getting caught up in a bar fight that ended with a human dead. Genie will have to figure out what exactly happened on the night in question or face her pack, and supernaturals in general, getting some harsh media attention.

Genie is pulled into the other mystery by her ex-boyfriend Cash when she’s called out to a scene involving a sorority house + missing girls + demon possession = (You do the math) Big Trouble. In both instances, Genie will end up turning to her magical side to get to the bottom of what’s going on.

When I started reading Black Magic Bayou I almost felt like I had missed a book or a short story somewhere in between this one and Bayou Blues. I didn’t, and I was quickly pulled into the story, but I had forgotten how much had changed for Genie over the course of the first book.

I was really happy when the “magic” part in the title played such a big role for Genie throughout this story. She is just as much a witch as she is a werewolf, and I was glad we get to explore her magical side pretty extensively in this book. However, it’s quickly apparent that Genie’s kinda feeling the void of not using her magic as much as she has in the past. I think the struggle for Genie to acclimate her two halves will continue to play a big part for her character in future stories.

Sierra Dean introduces witch Santiago into the mix. He represents the power that Genie hasn’t, until now, really acknowledged she wants to attain with her own magic. He knows things about spells that Genie could know if she would devote more time to honing the natural talent she has and also what her Memere taught her. He’s also a huge seductive temptation for Genie. Not sure how I feel about any possible love triangles popping up. I’m ok with Santiago kind of being a foil for Genie, but I feel like we’ve already been through this in Bayou Blues with Cash and Wilder.

I’m definitely more interested in seeing things progress with Genie and Wilder. And boy do they progress. Their attraction was so smokin’, jump-off-the-page, hot in the first book, and every scene they’re together in Black Magic Bayou is the same. I did, however, wish that Wilder was a bit more involved in goings on this time around. While he’s there, I felt like he was a bit relegated to the background a lot of the time. But I think this goes with the fact that this book focused more on Genie’s magical side than her werewolf side specifically.

Besides a few circumstances that come up that felt a bit too coincidental for my tastes, I really enjoyed Black Magic Bayou. Sierra Dean has done a great job separating Genie from Secret (don’t worry Secret is not forgotten), and this ending will make you wish book 3 was out, like, yesterday.

I read these two back to back. They have great characters and character building, but they go to a really dark place. It was uncomfortable. They are mostly mysteries with a hint of romance - 95% mystery. The second one is about a murder in a bar and a demon in a sorority house in New Orleans.

The second book in the Secret McQueen spin-off series featuring werewolf/witch hybrid Genie McQueen picks up just a few months after the events of book one, Bayou Blues. She is now the Alpha of New Orleans and is working hard to live up to her uncle’s expectations. Her good friend Magnolia is serving as a secretary of sorts and Wilder Shaw remains by her side as a bodyguard. He makes her hot with lust just by glancing in her general direction, but for now they haven’t stepped into couplehood.  So far she hasn’t been really challenged in her new role, but that is about to change.

Getting a call that two of her wolves are being held by the police after an incident in a night club, Genie heads straight over to deal with the problem. She realizes quickly that the situation will require a delicate, yet strong hand to manage, especially since there is a dead body and the New Orleans Police Department seem to believe that her pack members are to blame. Add to that a call by her previous boyfriend asking for help in finding missing sorority sisters that almost immediately delves into deep shit territory when Genie encounters a demon on the premises. A problem that only a few favors and her witch side will be able to solve.

Wow. I’ve looked forward to this follow-up for a while, but I really had no idea how awesome it would be. I could not stop reading. Fast paced, with an interesting, intriguing plot line and well-fleshed out characters, I have the feeling that this series will be just as cracky as its predecessor, Secret McQueen. Genie is dealing with big things this time. Yeah, I know, the last book centered around a religious cult, but for some reason this time around I was even more creeped out by the involvement of a demon possessing a college student. Maybe because I just sent the eldest off to college and she just joined a sorority, LOL.

Genie is a heroine that knows her limitations, makes some questionable decisions in order to overcome obstacles, but you root for her because of those things. Being Alpha isn’t all sunshine and roses, especially when her twin brother keeps butting in and trying to involve himself in situations that aren’t his to resolve. At first I wondered if this would dominate the storyline, and there is a scene where she does draw the line with him, but interestingly enough, her role as Alpha seemed to take a backseat to dealing Cash’s new girlfriend’s sorority issue and it’s her witch heritage that is needed to ultimately save the day. This made me happy, as being a witch is just as much a part of Genie as being a werewolf.

I got the sense that her power is simmering just under the surface, and despite her living with her powerful grandmother for years, she hasn’t yet fully invested in this part of herself. This is touched upon and hinted at when she is forced to ask for another witch’s help in taking down the demon infesting the sorority house. He’s a temptation as well as a help, and I believe we will be seeing him often in the future. Especially since she traded a “taste of her magic” for his assistance. I’m not really worried about a love triangle, Genie and Wilder made a huge step forward in their relationship, but I do think he will urge her to explore and nurture her magical abilities in the future.

I really enjoyed this installment in the series. I had absolutely no problem jumping right back into this world and these characters. I’m keeping my fingers crossed the wait for book three won’t be too long. Final Grade-B

The McQueen genes run true, don't they? Secret might have had the vamp hunting thing down, but Genie isn't afraid to throw herself wholeheartedly into all manner of dangerous situations if she thinks she's needed. Which is a good trait for an alpha to have, mind you. The leader of a pack needs to be willing to put herself on the line for her people.

Genie certainly does that. She also puts herself on the line for those she thinks are innocent, wolf or otherwise.

Also, Wilder? RAWR. I do enjoy an outcast werewolf mechanic with a protective streak.

Things I'm not too keen on: Genie's brother. That guy can go suck on a lit stovepipe. His douchery is through the roof and I can't imagine things are going to go smoothly between Genie and Ben until he understands that she's not going to give up her position. As alpha, Genie can't afford to let him get away with the things he's trying to do. (but that's another problem for another day. Just like that little issue Genie ran into at the end of the book. WOWSERS, GADGET! Some girls just can't catch a break, can they?)

Deals, romance, unexpected shenanigans, and danger are all part of Genie's life. What's not to like?
