📖 Wisani and the Bafokeng Brothers

What was meant to be a week long read-along ended with me finishing the book on day four because I genuinely could not stop reading. Every chapter left me needing to know what would happen next...
Set against the backdrop of Soweto and Lesotho, the story blends danger, loyalty, family responsibility, romance, and survival in such an addictive way. Wisani was such a compelling main character. She’s juggling studies, work, and family pressures, and that made her journey feel very real and emotionally grounded. I loved how determined and resilient she was, even when everything around her felt chaotic.
One of my favourite things about the book was that we got two love stories woven into the plot. Both relationships brought different dynamics and emotional layers to the story. And of course, the Bafokeng brothers themselves added so much intensity and intrigue to the story.
What also stood out to me was how the story touches on very real South African issues, including GBV, without losing the emotional core of the book. That realism added weight to the story and made certain moments hit even harder.
The pacing is incredibly fast-moving, which definitely adds to the addictive nature of the book. At times, though, it did move a little too fast, especially during some emotional moments and revelations that I would’ve loved to sit with a bit longer. But honestly, that nonstop momentum is also what made it impossible to put down.
And can we talk about that ending?! I absolutely did not expect the cliffhanger. The second I finished, my first thought was, "When is Book 2 coming out?", because I will definitely be picking it up.
Also… where is my Marashea King?! 😭
Overall, this was such an entertaining and gripping read with romance, tension, family drama, and strong emotional stakes.

That cliffhanger? Diabolical! I enjoyed this story so much! I just wish the focus could have been solely on Wisani and Mohapi. The side plots sometimes took me out of their love story. It read a bit too much like a Facebook story with the many POV's. The prose was so beautiful. I found myself laughing out loud at many points in the story. Thank you Thandi

This story was incredibly easy to read, and I felt connected to Wisani from the very first paragraph of the prologue, especially through her simple desire for a hot bubble bath.
There were a few phrases I tried translating with Google Translate to better understand their meaning, although it did not always work perfectly. Even so, I did not feel this detracted from the story. Instead, it added authenticity to the setting and culture of South Africa and Lesotho.
This book takes readers on a deeply emotional journey through the many hardships people face. It had me crying, laughing, and cheering for Wisani, the brothers, and those closest to them throughout the story.

Oh my gosh, I really really enjoyed this book. Loved it so so much. Thandi Moagi made me fall in love with these characters, all of them.
Beautifully written and set in Soweto and Lesotho, we go on a journey with Wisani and how she captured the eye of Mohapi, the eldest son of the Bafokeng Brothers and the leader of the Marashea Kings underground crime organisation.
Wisani is driven, hard working and all she needs is to graduate and get a job so that she can take care of her mother and younger brother. She meets Mohapi, when she is set up to interview him, although the interview does not go as planned.
Within weeks of meeting, these two are consumed with thoughts of each other. Suddenly Mohapi shows up unexpectedly. He treats her like she’s precious, he takes care of her. He also admires her strength and ambition.
The story had a good few twists I didn’t see coming. I felt at home reading about the crimes these brothers were involved in, taxi violence, cable theft to name but a few. We got to experience some traditions through the pages, labola, the wedding ceremony in Lesotho, cleansing rituals with a traditional healer. I was educated in the cultures of my country that I had no idea about and I loved learning about it.
I often enlisted the help of my Sotho friends to translate the various phrases in the book and absolutely swooned when Mohapi called Wisani “Rato laka” for the first time and she blushed. That was a favourite line throughout the book.
That ending - good grief, Thandi Moagi, please ma’am, when are we getting the rest?
I gave Wisani and the Bafokeng brothers a full 5 🌟because I cried, laughed, fell in love and wanted more. I cannot wait for the second book for the story to continue.
