Phillip Drayer Duncan has written over ten novels and is the only author who has ever sponsored a racecar…probably. His work has been published by Yard Dog Press, Pro Se Productions, Seventh Star Press, and Happy Omega Publishing.
Along with reading and writing, he enjoys kayaking, fishing, video games, and telling bad jokes. Phillip’s natural habitats include the rivers and lakes of the Ozarks, but he may also be spotted at a con or concert. During the cold season, he hibernates beneath a pile of books and video games. He is generally an approachable creature; however, it’s best to give him snacks to ensure he won’t bite. Cookies are best.
His earliest books were acted out with action figures and scribbled into notebooks. Today, he uses a computer like a real grownup, though he refuses to act his age the rest of the time. If it would pay his bills, he’d be playing with G.I. Joes right now.
His greatest dream in life is to become a Jedi, but since that hasn’t happened yet, he focuses on writing and eagerly awaits the next season of Firefly. He demanded we mention that he is a best smelling author.
I keep hanging in on the series because I do actually like the characters and the in the whole “late blooming screwups, trying to grow up and fit into an existing order while becoming better human beings” and the overall goal of “solving the mystery of who are the council and will they be foiled in their evil plans? “ story. Across the eight books, the two main characters have progressed in personal growth and assuming accountability, which is one of the more charming aspects of the books. In this book they go monster laden cave crawling, hacking at monsters, collecting treasures while gathering and ensemble cast of quirky characters. (I guess it’s supposed to be a D&D homage?). Since I’m more interested in a storyline/characters than endless “chopping and shooting”I lost interest in the hacking and slashing on level 2 and skipped to the exit). After the fighting was wrapped up and they got onto trying to solve the puzzle and move forward (where they have one of the characters going off on the side quest, and a stronger team to fight the evil) leads made to hope the next book will provide further progress in the series. I’ll probably keep loosely following this series because I do want to see the outcome of the good versus evil fight, and I would like to see the characters progress.
While it was nice to catch up with our dear friends and even a frenemy, this installment gave some serious Dungeon Crawler Carl vibes. That’s not a complaint, just an observation. The ending is satisfying, sad, and mysterious; a truly impressive feat. And now we wait for the next one.
