John Michael Alaia is a writer of thrillers and horror fiction whose work explores the darker edges of human nature, where fear, suspense, and moral ambiguity collide. Drawn to stories that linger long after the final page, he blends psychological tension with unsettling characters to create narratives that challenges readers to keep turning the pages late into the night.

These first few stories mark the beginning of a body of work shaped by a lifelong fascination with suspenseful storytelling, classic horror, and modern thrillers. When he’s not writing, he enjoys studying existing works, dissecting films and novels for what makes them frightening, while searching for the quiet, internal moments where the most terrifying ideas are born.

He lives on Long Island, NY and is currently at work on his next two novels.

“Withered” by John Michael Alaia is a dark, heavy, and deeply emotional read that lingers long after the final page. Through the simple yet haunting image of a woman sitting alone, stripping petals from a dying rose, the story unfolds into a powerful reflection on grief, guilt, and the unbearable weight of love that couldn’t save loved ones.
Alaia does an incredible job portraying grief in a way that feels raw and painfully real. It’s not just something you read about, you feel it in every line. The story quietly explores how loss weaves its way through families, reshaping lives and leaving behind a stillness that must somehow be endured.
This is not an easy read, but it’s a meaningful one. Withered is a moving reflection on the ones we couldn’t keep and the ones left behind to carry that loss. Haunting, intimate, and beautifully written.

This novella is dark, unsettling, and way more emotional than expected. It is a quick read with a heavy impact. It doesn’t scream at you, it just quietly messes with your head. Not for people who need everything explained, but perfect if you like eerie, thought-provoking stories. The grief is raw and haunting. Beautifully written and heart breaking.

This short story about a woman and wife dealing with her grief and the exploring of her husband's and sons grief and how they all deal with it differently is a raw emotional story that will leave you thinking. John has a beautiful and masterful writing technique that draws you in instantly and has you feel every emotion and description as if you were in the same room as the character!

Perfect description of grief

John has a way of making his readers feel every emotion the characters are feeling, all without being overtly in your face descriptive. This book is the perfect testimony to that. It’s sad, haunting, real. It has a honest and compelling approach to depression, to grief, to the people who know the feeling of staring out the window at nothing and everything in particular. 10/10 highly recommend. At this point I can safely say ANY of this authors books will be a transporting magical experience. If you’re debating reading it, do it. My favorite quote from this one is

because she understood by then that there are things in a child's mind that belong only to the child, secret rooms in them you are not permitted to enter, maybe not even approach, and the most loving thing is sometimes to remain at the window and bear witness from a safe and respectful distance.

The love of a mother and wife.

Withered by John Michael Alaia delivers grief with a quiet intensity that hits hard. It doesn’t just describe loss—it immerses you in it, letting the weight settle into every moment. The story traces how sorrow lingers and reshapes what’s left behind, carried in silence rather than words. It’s a heavy read, but one that resonates with intention and leaves a lasting impact. Subtle, piercing, and impossible to shake.

A Novella about loved ones who have left and what happens to those left behind. Simple but meaningful rituals that are adopted with quiet purpose.

This story is unsettling, dark, and extremely emotional. It hits hard and immerses the reader fully. The stark reality shows how mental health profoundly affects families. The narrative is raw, heart-wrenching, and brutally honest. An excellent read.

Thanks John, you truly have a gift. You enabled me to see and feel - deeply 🥰

Heartbreaking But Powerful

This story brings to light how real mental health and the effect it has on families. Reading this book, my heart sunk. Through these pages you want to reach out and help. I highly recommend this book. Even though it’s heartbreaking it brings out the true emotions and feeling a person gores through.

Withered

This was very interesting. I really felt all the feels throughout the story. I think in ways it's a good read for those who have lost someone. Life must go on but the pain remains. You just learn to accept it and cope with it in your own way.

Withered arrives quietly, the way grief itself arrives. A woman alone in a dim basement, a dying rose on silk cloth, a paring knife she didn't consciously remember to bring. And then Alaia's prose just doesn't let you go.

The detail work here is extraordinary. Every metaphor is earned, nothing borrowed or decorative, and the sentence-level writing has a rhythmic precision that makes you stop mid-paragraph and go back, not because you got lost, but because something landed so well you had to read it again The structure mirrors its themes beautifully: same gestures, deepening meaning, grief accumulating like petals in a box.

Difficult? Yes, take the content warning seriously. But the difficulty is the point, and Alaia handles it with unflinching honesty and a complete absence of melodrama. Stunning work.

Withered was an emotionally layered and compelling story. As a former counselor, I knew going in this would be a difficult read. I appreciated how realistically the author handled the psychological and emotional struggles within the story. It sparked an emotional and thoughtful response from me as the reader. I believe this is a story everyone should read. It will haunt me for more than a little while. It is a shorter novella, but it took me a month to read because of the emotional depth.

I read this novelette a few days ago and I can still feel the weight of John's prose... This is a deep, raw story of the sorrow that lingers. I personally enjoyed "The Boy That Couldn't Smile," I felt it in ways I cant quite explain but parts of it reminded me of myself as a child. I felt the weight of this story and I am deeply moved...

Another win!🏆 👏
I got one more book to go!

Thank you to the author for a copy of this short story. This one definitely hit me really hard. Dealing with losing someone to suicide, no one really knows what you go through unless they've been through it too. This was short but so impactful.
