Rate this book
I’ve lost more brothers after combat than I did during it. That truth has stayed with me for years.

During six combat deployments as a U.S. Army Green Beret, I witnessed violence, chaos, and loss in some of the most dangerous places on earth. But the hardest battles weren’t always fought overseas.

They were fought inside the mind when the war came home.

Those battles aren’t limited to soldiers. We all face them.

Overthinking. Anxiety. Negative thought loops. Pressure. Self-doubt. The quiet mental battles that shape our decisions, our relationships, and ultimately our lives.

The Deliberate Mindset is a practical guide to winning the fight within through disciplined thinking and intentional action. Drawing from lessons learned in combat, leadership, entrepreneurship, and everyday life, Justin Pickering reveals the five core principles that shape resilient thinking.

Inside the book you’ll

Practical tools to stop overthinking and regain mental clarity Reflection prompts designed to slow down reactive thinking Simple frameworks for making better decisions under pressure Strategies for building resilience in work, family, and personal life Faith-based reflections that offer wisdom without preaching If you’re ready to take ownership of your mindset and start winning the battle within…Click play and begin.

About the author

Justin Pickering is a retired Green Beret Sergeant Major, entrepreneur, and leadership coach who believes that success in life starts with what you choose to focus on. After six combat deployments, years of military leadership, and building businesses after retirement, Justin learned that resilience is not something you are born with. It is something you build through deliberate choices.

His work is grounded in real life experience, from leading soldiers in high pressure environments to overcoming self doubt, navigating adversity, and building a purpose driven life after the military. Justin writes with honesty, practical wisdom, and a deep desire to help others strengthen their mindset, lead with intention, and take ownership of their future.

When he is not writing, Justin works in real estate, coaches leaders and entrepreneurs, and shares lessons on faith, growth, and living deliberately.

What makes this book different is that Justin doesn’t just motivate you, he gives you practical tools to actually create change. The accompanying workbooks, reflection prompts, and actionable exercises make this far more than a typical mindset book. You don’t just read it, you apply it.

Justin’s stories from his time as a Green Beret kept me engaged and inspired, but my favorite parts were the practical tool sections. One of the most impactful lessons for me was in Chapter 5: “Rehearsing Fear vs. Rehearsing Possibility.” Justin writes, “Action starves anxiety of its oxygen,” reminding readers that clarity comes through movement, not overthinking. Even a small, imperfect step forward could be all you need.

This book is honest, practical, and full of tools that can genuinely help people move forward. Highly recommend for anyone wanting to build resilience and take more intentional action in life!!
