Thank you to the author for a copy of this audio in exchange for an honest review
I have to admit, I mostly read the second book because it was narrated by this person with an amazing voice. She definitely brought all of Dana's characters to life with cute voices and perfect tones. I will listen to anything she narrates. Even the daily news. Lol
Changed picks up where Just pretending ended. Nick has been enduring rumors about his activities all year and it doesn't help that he has been kicked off the team. Summer has had a crush on Nick for 2 years and despite hearing all the bad things about him, she believes his acts can be redeemed. The two meet at a party when Nick stumbles in a drunken haze into a room where Summer is admiring his train models. They hit it off, becoming instant friends. Soon, Summer realizes that Nick isn't the bad guy everyone makes him out to be but is forced to consider if she can overlook everything he has done, especially the fact that he has been known to cheat on his girlfriends.
Changed has been titled after Nick, the supposed bad boy who changes into a considering young boy for a girl.

Changed? was an okay read, but i didn't like it as much as the first one.

Summer was an okay character, but i didn't love her. I really didn't like Nick in the first book, and he wasn't much better in this one.

The storyline wasn't that exciting unfortunately. There wasn't any sweet moments and nothing much happened, which is a shame, since the first one had a few sweet moments, and was pretty good.

Overall, Not as enjoyable as the first.

Actual rating 3.5 out of 5

Changed? is the second novella in the Hearts to Follow series. Here, we pick back up with Nick's story from the first novella (Just Pretending) and then meet a new cast of characters from Nick's hometown. The female lead in this story is Summer. She is a smart, down-to-earth, no-nonsense kind of character with a soft side, and I really admired her ability to stay true to herself throughout the story.

Once again, Burkey presents us with a very believable high school world. The dialogue is spot on, and I found myself throughout the novel wondering two things. First, does the author have some sort of special viewing lens through which she can see my high school days because I feel like you could substitute a few names in this novel and I would be reading a script from my own high school years? And second, I wondered if this might work better as a script for a play? Perhaps a series of one-act plays. The first two novellas present themselves as little vignettes, scenes, if you will, in a larger drama, and I'm curious to see how the third novella in the series will play out.

For some reason, I had a harder time getting into Changed? than I did Just Pretending. I think perhaps some of the language flowed better in the first novella. The story is there in Changed?, I just had a hard time getting through a few of the sentences in this one. The second half reads much more cleanly and the ending is quite lovely.

I would recommend this book to teenagers. I think it is a very identifiable, age-appropriate story for people in high school. You will likely find yourselves grinning and giggling from time to time.

I wanted to like this book as I really enjoyed the first one, unfortunately though I just didn't like Nick.

Nick just didn't do it for me in this book, whether this is in part due to him not being that great of a guy in the first book I don't know, but he just didn't endear himself to me at all.

The storyline in this was a bit of a let down as well. Nick and Summer just seemed to dither for the whole book, and their interactions weren't sweet enough or romantic enough for me. Nick's explanations concerning his previous love life made him look like a complete arse-hole, and why Summer wanted to date him considering all of that don't know. If Summer was my friend I would be warning her off of him as he seems like a player, and has little respect for the women in his life.

The ending didn't do it for me either, but I think this is purely based on my reasons above. I didn't want Summer to end up with Nick, so a HEA just wasn't going to do it for me.

Really sorry Dana because I know you worked hard on this, and I liked your other book, but if you ever meet a Nick please give him a telling off for me.

An amazing second edition to this series. It shows what happens next with Nick from the first book. Now, I didnt like Nick in the first book because, well he was a word which I really shouldn't put down in a review. However you got to like him towards the end of the book out of pity and his new changed personality. I enjoyed this immensely, not as much as the first book but definitely a lot. The narrator yet again didnt do it for me, but that's down to audible not the plot of the story. Off to read the last instalment now!

I think I actually liked this one a little more than Just Pretending. It was hard to accept Nick after seeing how he was in the previous story and even some of his explanations here weren't satisfactory. However, I did like the development between Nick and Summer. I just would have liked more time to have passed after what happened with Nick previously.

I really didn't like Summer's friends in this story. I was glad that she realized the way they treated her was not cool. Still, they really bothered me.

I thought this was a really enjoyable read. Summer was likable and the story was cute.

Better than book one

Book two is so much better! Summer is my girl, wise, smart, knows what she wants. This kid has so much confidence. I don't think she, realized how independent, and confident she was. Nick, did a 180,changing his ways. That change led to a much needed change in behavior. I love the fact that Summer did not succumb to peer pressure and start drinking like the rest of the kids. That she looked at all those drunk kids and decided, this is not for me.
More teens need to read this, the messages are loud and clear.

Four stars. Definitely.

I am such a sap, and these stories are bringing it out in me. "Changed?" is the second book in Burkey's "Hearts to Follow" series and I liked it even more than the first. This may be the hopeless romantic in me talking, but I think these stories are really great! I love Burkey's way of introducing characters in one book and then using them in the next book rather than abandoning them. I also think she's really good at hitting the mark when it comes to high schoolers and their behavior because everything in High School is always a lot more dramatic than it should be. For instance, the concept of rumors play a huge role in this book and my first reaction is "who cares?" But, it's true. High school has a way of making mountains out of mole hills, and whether you have decent friends or friends like Tonya and Morgan, it can be a little hard to maintain a confident and upbeat outlook when everyone is talking about you.

That being said, I did have a few things that tripped me up when I was reading. First and foremost are appearances. Burkey has mastered the art of slipping appearances into the narrative, but sometimes she does it a little late. For instance, I don't think it's mentioned that summer has black hair until close to half way through the story and by that point I already had Summer all drawn out in my mind so that tripped me up a little bit since it was so off base from what I'd imagined. Secondly, for as amazing as some of the high school behavior comes off, some other things also felt a little... mature. For instance, there are conversations about giving athletes better grades for doing well in sports, having tutors, etc. that just pulled me out of the story a little bit because it just didn't seem to fit the characters.

Finally, characters are also a really big thing for me and they can determine whether I love or hate a story, so I do want to mention a few things. Somewhere very close to the beginning Nick mentions Cam being special as opposed to just another girl like Gina was but... going on his behavior in the last book I don't really see that as true. He was pretty awful to her considering how special he found her to be. There's also the issue of friends. While Nick realizing that Summer is an actual friend over his sports friends felt completely natural, Summer's fondness for Tessa over Morgan and Tonya felt a teensy bit forced. I think that maybe it would have flowed more naturally if they'd known each other a little longer. They're friends for all of two months when Summer realizes that she's way more of a friend than the other girls so maybe if Tessa was more of a closet friend she knows from theater camp, but doesn't really hang out with at school it would have been more natural. Then Summer could put the pieces together that she likes hanging out with someone who has more mutual interests with her rather than people that she's just known for a while. Finally, the antagonists in this story really don't have any redeeming qualities to them so it's really easy to pin them as bad guys. For instance, in book one it was easy for Cam to choose Josh over Nick because Nick was a jerk. Similarly, Gina is painted in a really nasty light in this book as opposed to her having some at least likable qualities.

Overall, I really enjoyed this novella and I'm looking forward to reading the final installment "Stage Lights."

Oh my what a strong character Summer is! I can definitely see the potential of an even bigger story coming out of this series. I really loved the transition to the second installment. Putting the focus on Nick, a questionable character from book 1, and shedding much needed light on him, I found 'Changed' a more enjoyable read than the first.

Now back to the character, Summer. Can you imagine her in a more mature setting, novel wise? For a young girl she really knows who she is and what she wants. Boy did she give her love interest a run for his baseball! Maybe other female heroines should take their cues from her when it comes to not being a pushover and falling, without reason, for their male lead. I mean really! They do it just because the author says so! But I digress.

After grasping the concept and following the storyline closely, it was interesting to note how our words can affect someone else's life and also what a big problem negative peer pressure can be if one is without morals or willpower. The story also touched on the importance of good, healthy friendships. The fact that neither Summer or Nick's 'friends' never paid too much attention to anything but gossip and speculation had me riled up on the characters' behalf!

Part 2 was an awesome, too-short, purely enjoyable read.

I received a free copy of this novella in exchange for my honest review. :) honestly!

I also posted this review on my blog -> https://bookandbastille.wordpress.com...

I like these novellas because they make a story that could be so much longer and is short but makes you feel as though you’ve read an actual book. Also, the author weaves together the characters from the previous book into this one and exceeds at character development. After the events in the first novella, Nick is back again and facing the rumors from the last book while finding someone who can look past those rumors. Nick’s character grows a lot in this book and the author wrote him so well that you understand more about him by his “car speech”, as I will call it. Dana Burkey is an excellent writer who blends stories together and writes very well. Although there were some grammatical errors, the spectacular story with distract you from. Another amazing book from Dana!!!

Love at last word?: YES!!! Dana is an amazing, wonderful author whose future books/novellas I look forward to reading!

GEEZ! I love this series!! It's real. It's raw and its short. Dana you did it again. You left me wanting to know more! I was left practically hating Nick at the end of Just Pretending. He seemed so shallow and honestly just an all around jerk but this gave me a different view of him. It made him seem so vulnerable and broken hearted. Even though a novella is short Dana did a great job of adding dimension to not only Nick but also Summer.

Summer is different from all the girls that are just looking to be popular and just go to parties every weekend. She is focused and she knows what she is after. She wants to stay focused on school but Nick. Nick is her weakness. Shes had a crush on him for a very long time. She is in shock because he is actually showing interest in her. We follow this young love story as it blooms from being just friends to something more. We literally start seeing the changes in Nick. Everything seems perfect but as usual something threatens our young couple. Can they overcome the obstacles?? Can they survive the hell hole many call highschool?

definitely a book to read!!

I have read 3 of Dana Burkey's YA stories and this one is my favorite. I like how she chose one of the not-so-likable characters from another work and turned him into the love interest in this one, particularly since we get to see another side of him, which is much more developed and easier to like.
The main character, Summer, is also very easy to relate to. I believe many young girls will enjoy reading this book because they will see themselves in the shy and reserved Summer, who learns that it's okay to just be herself. As a teacher, I can see many of my students enjoying reading this book and there was no questionable language or compromising scenes.
You can tell that Burkey has a theater arts background in the way she describes the theater scenes in the story.
I also appreciate how she weaves her stories together by choosing minor characters from one story and making them the main focus in the next.

I received all three books in the series (audio versions) Hearts to Follow Series from the author Dana Burkey on Goodreads asking for reviews. I will say I enjoyed all three books in the series ... Book 1 - Just Pretending Cammie, Josh and Nick - main characters. Book 2 - Changed Nick and Summer. Book 3 - Stage Lights Tara and Anthony. Tara was introduced in Book 2 she became friends with Summer near the end. This young adult series was funny and engaging with the young female characters who had strength and did not fall into peer pressure. If my granddaughter was in High School I would have let her listen to the series. I pretty sure she would have enjoyed all three books. Just Pretending and Changed were my two favorite out of the series. Great read for YA. Book 2 brings back to Nick and how his character becomes changed for the better.

Thank you to the author for a free audio copy of her book in exchange for an honest review

One word: D'awwwww

I didn't enjoy this one quite as much as I did 'Just Pretending' because I was still freshly disliking poor Nick (I realise he's only a fictional high school student and I should try to forgive him for his behaviour).

This was another very sweet story about highschool romance, Summer is a very level headed girl and doesn't rush into a silly relationship just because she's had a crush on Nick forever - she takes her time and gets to know him properly and his softer side before deciding to be together. I definitely like that idea, though I'd probably like her a little more if she didn't take highschool rumours so seriously, but I guess no-one's perfect!

I would definitely recommend this for younger readers looking for a short audio to break up their day.

Changed? By Dana Burkey- Where Just Pretending ended this story takes off, following Nick back to his school and to see the fall out of his poor choices. Summer is a gal that is anything but ‘popular’ and finds herself wondering if Nick has changed his stripes.

A good solid run through and some proof-reading is definitely needed here. But other than that it was ok. You get to see how Nick realizes, with the help of the lovely and talented summer, what he did wasn’t the smartest ideas. Following along with the burgeoning relationship between Nick and Summer is adorable.

This book was awesome!!! We get more background on a character from the first book, and it just goes to show you cannot judge a character based on one book! Characters in stories are like real life people, we grow and change! It was very cool to see Nick's character development and to see him find happiness of his own. It was also intriguing and refreshing that he falls for a girl that is so different from the other girls he has previously liked. We cannot help who we fall in love with! This was a quick read and it was well written with minor editing mistakes. This is a self-published book and that is to be expected. I was extremely excited to see this book revolve around Nick and I was completely satisfied with all aspects of it.

Nick gets a second chance at love, and as much as I still don't LOVE him, it was cool to see him progress. Summer is a great character, that I feel like I would be friends with in real life. Facing so much life change with Nick and her friends, it was cool to see her not get swept up in the drama and everything. I also liked that the book was not in first person like the last one was. It was a nice switch. Like the first, this book has some editing errors, but they did not get in the way of the story at all!

The author gave me a free copy of this book and I was really excited to learn more about Nick and other characters. I was happy that it was a brand new story, not just a repeat of what I read in the last book, and Summer was a great character! The story felt genuine and believable, and I enjoyed reading all of the high school drama! I feel like it was a step up from the last book, and I look forward to reading more if the story continues. Great book, and thanks for letting me check it out! :)

Okay. I thought I read book 1 in the series fast, but it was nothing compared to how fast I just read this book!!!! I loved it so much getting to see how Nick was different from book 1! It literally made me go from hating him to wishing he was going to my school. I don't want to tell everyone the story or what happened, but read it. It is amazing! I love it almost more than the first one, which is saying a lot since the first book is basically my favorite book that's not about cheer from Dana.
Now I get to read book 3 and i'm sure it's going to be super great as well!!!!!!!

changed?” It’s not that great like I said the first book was fast even for a short story but this one was slow and then SPOILER!! When they had there first kissed I didn’t feel any of the fire works from how the author wrote it. I honestly got bored and went to read another book for a while. But like if you 12 and want to read a romance but then this is probably for you. But me personally didn’t feel any sparks between the two characters. So I give this one one star.⭐️

The protagonist was already annoying me and there were far too many clichés forming. I can predict where this book is going to go and I am just not in the mood for that sort of rubbish. Not for me. (hide spoiler)]

I very much preferred this book over the first installment of the series--Not that I'm saying that the first book was bad or anything along the lines of that. In this book, I felt like the romance was not as forced or hasty as it was in the first book, and I was much more caught up in this book than the first one. The character development that transferred from a certain character from the first book made me change from hating someone's guts to wanting to hug them for all of eternity. I can truly say that I really enjoyed this book and the series. Though not as descriptive as I am used to, the author makes up for it by fitting a plot with twists and turns into something short and sweet-- I finished it on a work day in about 3 hours! Though I would sometimes like to hear what happens in the times the auhtor summarizes long periods of time, I still very much enjoyed this book. (My exact rating would be a 4.5, but I'm writing a 5 because I can't put half stars.)
