It has been six hundred years since Imoshen the First, Causare of the T’En, brought her beleaguered people across the seas to Fair Isle. The magical folk mixed with the natives, bringing culture and sophistication, and made the island one of the wealthiest, most powerful nations in the known world. In one night, all is lost. Imoshen, namesake of the first Empress, is the last pure-blooded T'En woman, left behind when her kinfolk went to die in defence of their homeland. The savage Ghebites, barbarians from the warm north, have conquered Fair Isle, and their general, Tulkhan, claims her as his right of conquest. Proud and fierce, trained in arts of war and possessed of extraordinary healing gifts, Imoshen must choose to submit to the barbarian soldier and save her people's heritage... or to die in a futile gesture of defiance.
Cool setting, intriguing characters but too much back an forth of inner conflict and reversion of decisions. It gets a little tiring to follow their struggle in the end. I'm a huge Fan of the other series by this author and can highly recommend them.
This book if I was rating it on world building and overall writing would easily be a 4/5. The clashing cultures are interesting and unique. I really loved how it started with the war essentially already over so it could dive straight into the political tension of a conqueror vs. conquered political drama of it all. It has a functional, if somewhat nebulous, magic system that does have repercussions on the plot and some interesting ethical questions are raised because of it. There is a lot of good writing and interesting thoughts in this novel.
All that said, personally I had to give it a 3/5. This is for one reason only, and maybe I just haven't stumbled on to this sub-genre of fantasy before. This book is soooooooo horny. This is easily the horniest novel I have ever read. Again, maybe this says more about me than the book. After chapter 2 it seemed like every maybe fifth line has one of the three main characters in the love triangle eye humping one of the others. The book at times managed to be sensual, but at all times it was horny. If that sounds like your jam this could be a 5/5, but it pulled me right out of the political drama I was enjoying. Also not all of the horny is on the super consensual side. Like nothing full on graphic so far, but the two leads are both very pleased with themselves when they politically maneuver the other into having to have sex with them. Even though they both want it, they both think they tricked the other into it. So that left me feeling a little odd.
So yeah now I'm kinda bummed out because I bought the 3 in 1 collection and I'm not sure what to do next. I liked the politic and world writing and wasn't sure if maybe the horny would be toned down in the next ones. So I did something I've never done and page peeked later into book 2. Levels of horny seem to reach Arthurian levels, so nope. I'm tapping out. All love and power to you if you like this book or author, but sadly don't think it's for me.

As a first book in a new series and author for me, this was really good.
The cultures of both the Ghebites and the T’En are very different from each other but incredibly interesting. It is easy to get caught up in the difficulties that arise in trying to force these two cultures together in any meaningful way.
This was a tad bit on the slow side at times waiting for either some action or resolution or progress to speed things up a little bit. Part of that is just because we have so much to learn about the world and the characters and what is going on as the story drops you in right at the point where one culture has just conquered the other one.
I was also a little frustrated by the back and forth on the two main characters and their view towards each other. It is understandable with the position they are both in, but that is a tension building technique that can get old if overused. This comes close. I still really enjoyed the story overall and will be grabbing the next one soon.
