With this book we come to the conclusion of this series with the end of the Bride Butcher, the sociopath who abducted to-be brides at their bridal dress fittings then brutally killing them for the past six years. The first victim had been Rebecca Drummond's sister Lexi Drummond. The only difference was Lexi's body was never found, although it fitted with the pattern of all the following killings.
Jared Bell is the special agent investigating this serial killing and six years ago he had been so sympathetic toward Rebecca over her loss and so concerned for her well-being that she fell in love with him and in a moment of vulnerability got physically intimate with him. He however regretted slipping in his professionalism and when she told him about her feelings for him, he thought she was only feeling that way because of the void her sister's disappearance had left her and told her it would be better if they had no further contact with each other. Moreover, they disagreed over who Rebecca thought was the killer because the man had a perfect alibi on the day of Lexi's disappearance.
Later she finds out she's pregnant with his child, but his rejection had hurt her very badly and she didn't want him to feel that she was trapping him so she didn't tell him about their son, Alex.
Now, six years later, Jared finds that the Bride Butcher's latest victim had been a friend of Becca's missing sister. He checks out of the hospital where he'd been admitted for concussion after taking a blow to the head while protecting the to-be bride of his friend and fellow agent, Dalton Reyes (the hero of book three of the series and the cockiest of all the agents) and goes to Becca's place to see if she knows anything about the latest victim's connection to her sister.
Becca, who was worried about Jared meeting their son who was about to return from a play-date, tries to send him packing, but their son returns before she could get him to leave. Alex is fascinated by Jared, all the more when he sees Jared's gun and badge. Since their son was on the smaller side, Jared doesn't make the connection that Alex is his son. It was only after the news reporter, Kyle Smith --who's been giving Jared a hard time over his unprofessionalism for the past six years after discovering his and Becca's relationship-- pointed out the fact that Alex was his son. Jared immediately asks Becca if it was true, but then apologizes telling her he didn't think she would keep something so big and important from him and she's flayed by guilt. When she tell him it's true, he's devastated. Although, he covers up for Becca when Alex asks where he was in the past six years saying he was busy with work, he can't help feel bit resentful toward her, but he doesn't hate her.
Alex and Jared immediately take to one another. The scene where Jared has to leave immediately after being introduced to his son and promises him as he hugs him that he'll come back was very sweet and emotional and so was the scene where he does come back with a gift for his son and he's nervous whether his son would like it. His son loves it and hugs him. All scenes between father and son were very sweet, escalating Becca's guilt and remorse for keeping the two of them apart from each other all these years. Moreover, she'd never stopped loving Jared. She'd tried dating other men, but no one came anywhere close to Jared. For Jared too, she'd never left his mind in all of the years they'd been apart. Their desire and feelings for one another is as explosive as before. One touch and they were making love. I liked that the book was more about Jared, Becca and Alex despite all that danger lurking around Becca, which is why Jared moves her and Alex to live with him in his apartment.
He also invites her to go with him for Dalton's wedding where he was the best man. She and Alex move cities to go live with him. Enjoyed the banter and the ribbing going on between the agents (all heroes in the series) in the groom's dressing room. Later after the ceremony, they were teasing Jared about whoever had stood up as the best man was the next to make the trek to the altar. Jared is keen about marrying Becca, but he knew if they were to marry, the Bride butcher would go after her, so he decides against asking Becca to marry him until the sociopath is caught. When he vehemently denies it, Becca is convinced he doesn't love her.
She however agrees to Jared's boss, Chief Lynch's suggestion that Jared and she pretend to be engaged to flush out the killer, which angers Jared and there's tension between them. Alex was a good diffuser of the tension. Loved the moment when they were hugging and he goes in between them and says, "Family hug." I loved him. Loved Jared and Becca too.
There's a shocking twist but the killer finally meets his end.
The epilogue was very sweet especially when Alex tells Jared, who proceeds to kiss Becca even before the ceremony had started, that he's supposed to wait and also when the other agents tease Nicholas Rus --another of my favorite and hero of Bodyguard's baby surprise-- about him being the next to trek to the altar as he was Jared's best man.
This is one of my favorite Lisa Childs' book. Would recommend it for anyone who'd like a nice, angsty romance with a nice suspense.
