Nanami Momozono is alone and homeless after her dad skips town to evade his gambling debts and the debt collectors kick her out of her apartment. So when a man she's just saved from a dog offers her his home, she jumps at the opportunity. But it turns out that his place is a shrine, and Nanami has unwittingly taken over his job as a local deity!
The school trip to Okinawa is turning out to be the opposite of a good time for Nanami and her friends. A terrible storm has shut down the island, and it turns out the bad weather is being caused by an enraged mermaid who won’t rest until her stolen robe of feathers is returned. Nanami tries to get the robe back from Kirihito, who takes it to help him rescue his body from the Land of the Dead, but ends up drained of her vital energy! Can her shinshi Tomoe and Mizuki put aside their difference long enough to save their kamisama, or is Okinawa doomed?!
鈴木ジュリエッタ Suzuki Julietta is a Japanese manga artist born in the Fukuoka Prefecture. Her pen name comes from a character named Julietta Sakamoto from the seinen manga series, Air Master. She likes cats, koalas, and sharks. According to an interview with Hakusensha, she first started drawing when she was in her second year of elementary school in a sketchbook of Japonica. During her free time, she meets her friends, goes for a drink, or out for a meal. She states that although she doesn't read much, she enjoys works by Junji Itō. Her favourite character is Ashia and mentions that male characters are easier to draw in general.
I read this because the Boys over Flowers ending made me angry and upset and I had to go back to this manga to suppress my disappointment. As always, this series is amazing
The precious volume dealt with some dark themes, and I was anxious starting this volume, as I incorrectly assumed that the events of Chapter 107 would be swept under the rug.
Tomoe is very supportive and caring toward Nanami in the aftermath, but doesn’t go all out “alpha male” about it.
From the beginning of the manga to now, Tomoe has grown on me so much and this is largely due to his character development. He’s learnt that his anger and penchant for violence won’t get him anywhere, neither will being overly protective toward Nanami. He’s found a good balance between his the instincts he has harboured for so long as a yokai, and being a supportive, understanding and responsible partner to Nanami.
I’m also impressed with Kurama’s and Mitzuki’s character developments, as well as Ami’s and the mermaid tyrant figure (forgot her name), whose persona grew on me in the matter of pages.
Suzuki’s writing style ensures that readers root for everyone (apart from Akura-Oh eurgh and I think Yamamori?). I’m really looking forward to finishing this manga!
This is so beautiful I literally want to cry 😭😭 this manga is perfect in every sense I can't describe how much I love it.
This sub- romance with Mizuki is kinda sad but so good regardless. I hope it goes somewhere. Also Kurama and Ami is so cute I want them to be together.
Akura-ou is a fucking BITCH like I'm kinda mad with what he did but I kinda also want a redemption for him
Kurama and Mizuki, in particular, get some screen time at last in this adorable series. The story left off with Nanami in a precarious situation, and any sort of sympathy I might have felt for Akura-Oh have quickly dissipated for me after he cruelly took advantage of Nanami's kindness. I am eager to see Tomoe and Akura-Oh face off, but that's on hold for now as the story turns back to Nanami's friends, supernatural and high school alike.
Kurama doesn't know what he wants, which proves that even teenage idols are just as confused as everyone else. Granted, he's got some baggage from his older brother's tormenting, but it's nice to see him start to emotionally mature.
Mizuki steals the show as he works his charisma and natural charm on the mermaid, Unari. Mizuki's selflessness in the face of a distraught mermaid and his undying devotion to his master, Nanami, is very sweet. Mizuki has come along way from the deceptive lonely snake he was when we first met him.
As always, Kamisama Kiss is delightful classic shojo with a wonderful mix of Japanese folklore and modern day life. I'm anxious to see where Nanami's story will continue to lead us...I am afraid that Akura-Oh's sapping of her life force is just a foreshadowing of Nanami's mortality in general. We already know she comes from a line of women who live short lives that were extended by virtue of Ryu-Oh's eye, which she no longer has. Tomoe is practically immortal, Nanami is not. I'm curious to see whether this difference between them will be addressed. Recommended.
Nanami and her shinshi guardians race to save Ami from being trapped as a Dugong (not a dolphin as confusingly mentioned prior). But first she needs a quick recoup from dealing with Kirihito who took some of her spiritual energy. It gives Mizuki and Kurama a chance to shine at playing mediators toward the angry ocean goddess, Inari. It seems Mizuki may have some unresolved feelings from this event. I can't wait to find out how Nanami and her friends handle the menace Kirihito is becoming in the next volumes!
In order to save Ami and Nanami, Mizuki drags Kurama along to the mermaid's lair. They get separated along the way and Kurama ends up being saved by a dugong. I think the way Kurama becomes so dedicated to save Ami when he learns that the dugong is indeed Ami, is really charming 💗 There's a possibility of something blooming between Kurama and Ami and I'm ready to build my ship 🥰💜💜
Unari the mermaid demands Kurama to marry her in return of Ami, but Mizuki somehow takes that place instead. He readily gives himself to Unari as her bride, and it feels so bizarre but also heartwarming because he accepts her knowing how much loneliness she feels. Mizuki has a really gentle heart, and he's so kind towards Unari, to the point I wish he will stay with her.
But when Nanami comes to take him back to the shrine (dear lord, Tomoe kissing Nanami purposely in front of Mizuki just to show off is hilarious 😂), Unari lets him go and Mizuki promises that he'll return to visit her each year on the same day 🥺💖 That feels very bittersweet :') I know that Mizuki will always stay loyal to Nanami, but now that Nanami is dating Tomoe, I want my sweet Mizuki to have someone to love and loves him back as much too 🥺
Las relaciones humanas son tan interesantes y de verdad este es mi shoujo preferido. Lo disfruto constantemente y más porque es una colección regalada por alguien especial para mí.
- Nanami: *is dying* *coughs* Tomoe... I accidentally kissed Kirihito... Tomoe: It's okay. I forgive you. Go to sleep. A FEW MOMENTS LATER. Tomoe: *fuming* I should have killed that brat when I had the chance.
- Kurama suddenly developing feelings for Ami? Unlikely. Unlikely....but cute. I loved the scene where he's lost and afraid under the ocean but then she comes in her dugong form and comforts him even though she has practically no memory. So cute!
- As soon as I saw Kurama with Unari, I was like, "Shiz, she's gonna try to marry him," and I was right! Don't know how I knew. Either way, can't blame her cuz if I ever laid eyes on him in real life I'd instantly marry him too. Then MIZUKI comes in out of nowhere, slams Kurama's face into the floor (lol), and offers himself instead! I died. He was so sweet, too. Unari was also super cute.
- *This part of my review was written just a few short pages later* Okay. I SHIP MIZUKI x UNARI FOR REAL. THIS BETTER HAPPEN. HE PROMISED HER. Ship name: Mizunari? Unazuki? FIVE MINUTES LATER. SERIOUSLY?! I knew it was going to happen, but I'm still so frustrated. Why does Mizuki not stay? Other than to keep the gang all together.
- Oh my gosh when Tomoe spontaneously kisses Nanami in front of Mizuki and Mizuki just freaks out. Ahhh...good times...And then he attacked Tomoe... Yes. Good times indeed...
- I just have to say that I love Ami's new hair. Also, if something happens between her and Kurama, I would certainly not complain. Just saying. (That's my low-key way of something I f**king sHiP tHEM ASDFGHJKL)
- That last shot of Mizuki staring sadly at the sea just breaks my heart but I love it and I love him and I love his love for Unari. This is something that needs to be further developed.
What I love about this series (apart from Tomoe) is how Suzuki considers the real feelings that lie deep beneath the characters' surfaces. Kurama, Ami, and Mizuki all get that treatment in this book, and it makes the story not just romantic, but heartwarming with a tiny touch of bitterness.
Well, this was better. I have to say that I have no real complaints about this volume. All parts of it were great and I loved that it mostly explored the relationships between the characters.
First of all, I need to talk about Nanami and Tomoe. I love how he came to save her from Kirihito and Tomoe arguing with him was just amazing. Also my dude was genuinely worried and his face showed it. I also love that Tomoe was completely mad when he heard about Kirihito kissing Nanami (and as the king he is he was mad at that idiot and not his future wife). Then at the end he was also really protective of her and I love that for them especially because now they get to kiss the entire time and it’s cute.
Then we have Kurama and Ami and they are so cute and I ship them together so much. I love that Ami actually managed to help Kurama find Unari even in her animal form and she is actually the reason he was able to help her in the first place. But then it was even cuter because Kurama managed to find her and turn her back into a human and it was so funny because he was nervous that she was naked.
And lastly there are Mizuki and Unari. I actually really like this random relationship that came out of nowhere. It weirdly makes sense. I don’t know, I really feel bad for Unari for thinking she is unlovable, because same. I mean, her own mother called her ugly which is just fucked up. Not to mention that Mizuki truly seems to understand her. These were probably my favorite Mizuki moments in the manga so far. He really is caring and knows exactly what Unari needs to hear. I mean, he genuinely seems to care for her which is really wholesome.
Anyway, I really really liked this volume even though I was kind of expecting not to. 5 stars and I hope the series continues with this level of quality towards the end.

banger volume this arc was so good one thing i have never complimented this series on is how good the full page panels are, the details captured are always so nice and incredibly beautiful the whole adventure of rescuing ami was great and everyone got a moment to shine from tomoe caring for nanami nanami’s unwavering determination to save her friends mizuki helping mermaid lady side note mizuki has really been pushed to the back burner lately so it’s was i nice to see him have a more central role in the story and best side character kurama had sweet moments when he saved ami nice development mermaid lady was a great sympathetic antagonist as well one of the more memorable ones i’d say great design too great great stuff FORGOT TO MENTION NANAMI AND TOMAE’S ROMANCE MOMENTS SO INCREDIBLE MIZUKI’S ENDING PAGE TOO

Ok atleast nanami reflects on her foolishness. How she jeopardized not only thr trip she was working torwards for so long but also her life and neglected how it all would affect Tomoe. Makes their relationship way less significant than volume 17 suggested. So i am happy she acknowledges it very slightly but it seems like she is still very very ignorant about it, which is very dissapointing. Also is no one gonna mention what a pos Unari's mom is? And what a moment for some character growth she and Mizuki clearly resonate well, why do they both agree he needs to keep torturing himself loving Nanami whilst she will never feel the same
I really loved this arc. It was sweet to see Tomoe being vulnerable (for once in the present), and the thing with Mizuki and Unari was so cute... but I didn’t feel like the part with Kuruma was as successful... he didn’t even know who Ami was, and he was basically forced into things...
I would have thought Mizuki would remind him that when his people needed help, Nanami did everything to help... he could return the favor.
Now it’s implied that maybe he’s falling for Ami??? 😒
I am worried how they’ll handle things if that weird girl with the camera managed to get pics of Kuruma flying...

I'm going to leave the same review for all the volumes. I LOVED this manga so much and am trying to collect all the physical copies. I was originally reading it online when it was still coming out
There are a lot of characters. Only some are the main characters, but we see and get to know the side characters also. World building was nicely done in typical youkai fashion, and the romance was very cute
In one of her side panels, Julietta says that she feels that everyone must love someone or something in order to live. This idea definitely shows in this volume. It seems as though she's trying to give everyone someone to love. In some cases, this works well, but in others, it feels contrived. I'm interested to see if she continues this theme.
The Okinawa arc wasn't so bad I kive how Mizuki is determined to help Nanami, and I understand his feelings for her but I still find it annoying when he's jealous of Tomoe. But that's because I kove Tomoe! Ami and the Kurama are cute but I'm curious about the spy/stalker. I wonder if she's human or yokai? Anyway she's trouble for Kurama and his career.

I was genuinely concerned that Mizuki was going to stay in the ocean. He is a ray of sunshine and I wouldn't want to read the story without him. Plus the conflict between him and Tomoe is just too cute!
