January 25, 20202nd go around thoughts: This is probably one of my least favorite volumes I've read in the series so far. There's just a lot going on and at times it feels a bit too much. Sometimes the scenes seem clogged up so I'd find myself having to backtrack to make sure I was grasping everything that happened. I still love this series though!
This took a bit of time to pick up for me and I'm almost wondering if I just prefer the anime? I love this world and the characters, but I'm not sure if the manga is the best way to consume it. I'm gonna try a few more volumes since I already own volumes 3 & 4 and see what I think from there.

The heroes-in-training get costumes and then undergo intense training where Izuku will need to get control of his Quirk (superpower). All Might gets a new job. A lot of villains turn up in an unexpected way and place! The story around All-Might passing down his legacy and the trainee heroes are OK, but when the villains turned up, and all the fighting kicked-off my interest began to wane. I have a hope that manga 'cape' stories steer away from Western superhero tropes. A Three Star, 6 out of 12.

Wooow I was not expecting this to be so dark, especially so early on. Sure, they have someone with a quirk that can heal bodies but I didn't expect people to get their bones crushed and faces smashed in. Or the villains possibly murdering children.

Tsuyu, mi reina, confirmo que siempre me has gustado.
Pero lo mal que cae el intenso de Bakugo. Personaje para fastidioso. Y ni hablar de Mineta, harina de otro costal.
Dejando de lado a esos dos no recordaba lo rápido que se retuerce todo y nos entregan pura acción. Bastante merecida porque es un buen gancho.

confession time: I haven’t as much read this manga as I run my eyes over it while simultaneously watching the anime adaptation (season one covers chapters 1-22) and I was quite surprised to find out that 0% of the scenes from the manga got cut out and everything was done so awesomely that I feel no hesitation giving out rating to volumes 1 and 2 right here and now.

What's there not to love about the story of sheer will power and quirks (special abilities)?
The story is well designed, it keeps the audience connected and interested.
This volume also introduces a lot of new characters and they are unique not only with their powers but also in their appearance. I cannot stress enough how interesting it is to read the author's comments on design and decisions regarding how to create the characters.
Manga is its own art form (similar yet different from comics) and I am glad I was introduced to it. I am genuinely hyped when something regional become a global delight and are enjoyed with a wider audience.
Also, ready to start with #3 because of the cliffhanger!

It's pretty fun. Some designs are more than cringy, but I'm willing to overlook it for now. Not many things can beat an underdog story, especially such adorable underdog as Deku. Is it run-of-the-mill school for gifted children story? Sure. Is the heroic theme overworked? Yup, especially when the villains show up in force, like some weird union members on a protest. At the same time, however, MHA shapes up to be more enjoyable than most of similar tales, with some intriguing twists and turns, and moments of pure fun. Also, I'm quite impressed with the general quirkiness of the design - it's lighthearted and totally bonkers, and while I'd be happier not to see some characters at all (Mineta, ugh) I still have fun enough to continue with the series ;).

I was on the fence about My Hero Academia after reading the first volume — it's an enjoyable series, but I found the premise to be a bit too derivative (X-Men+Top 10 much?), and the storytelling sometimes felt muddled. But I liked the characters and the overall tone and feel of the book enough to give the second volume a try, and I'm glad I did, because it did improve. The characters are the main pull of the series, and this volume adds a bunch of new ones — including the analog of everyone's favourite X-Man, Goldballs (who, coincidentally, is also this manga's pervert character who swoons over girls' body parts even in the face of imminent danger). Hey, it's not all that bad — I liked all the other new guys and the overall optimistic message of the book that promotes friendship, teamwork and treating each other with respect. The storytelling still feels a bit muddled, but considering it's Horikoshi's first major ongoing manga, it's to be expected, and I'm sure that in a couple more volumes it will all smooth out.

Most of this volume reminded me of shows like Yu-Gi Oh!; the action, the over-exaggeration, the 'talking to yourself but everyone hears you' thing... It helped me connect with this series (I love Yu-Gi Oh!) on a deeper level.
It was really cool seeing all those villains invade but what was hilarious was all those villains were beaten by a bunch of students. I also really liked the personal connections weaving throughout the story. I can't wait to find out what the heck is going on!
EDIT: In typical Sophia fashion, saying 'I can't wait to find out' really means I'm going to not read the next book/manga/comic until years later 🙃

I enjoyed the ending of this one a lot more than the beginning but it was still good. I'm still saving a five star because I know that I loved the third season of the anime so much, and that season was based on volume ten to fifteen. This volume ended on a cliff hanger, so I'm definitely going to read the next one as soon as I can.

March 9, 2020At time of reading this, we're currently at Season 4 (School Festival Arc) in the anime, so it's kinda nice to read back and see how the kids have grown. They've grown so much! In this volume, Midoriya is still struggling to control his power and friendships and bonds between Class 1-A haven't really been formed yet. So looking forward to seeing how those grow in future volumes!!
Something I'm really enjoying while reading the manga is the little notes by Horikoshi! It's cool to see his thoughts and ideas behind each character (something we don't see at all in the anime). 👀

It's hard to not find this fun. Heroes in the making, learning the life lessons about doing good through simulations and practice, it's just a haven for great things to come and this volume even introduces the bad things in life too. Things get pretty intense, putting them all quickly in life-threatening situations that will surely build their characters even more.
I look forward to seeing how these characters will develop and if it will remain original in a world filled with superhero stories.

Classic school-hero progression and a really fun story. Gotta root for the underdog who is destined for ultimate number 1 status, right? And his rival who seems to be a one-note guitar seems to be a bit more complicated than anyone quite expects.
Early days, early days. But now we've got not only the rivalry to clear up, but real villains, too!

Review: I'm delighted with the character development of Deku here. The construction of the action scenes are well organized and the illustrations are spot on, clean, and full of surprises!

So good!!!! My friend asked me, no - begged me to read this and I really enjoyed it! I read the first book back in July of 2020 and I didn't enjoy it as much as I did this one but it was still good. I used to read a lot of Manga back then and I really news to enjoy it so I'll try my best to go back into it because this just reminded me how amazing Manga is!!

The students are in their new hero costumes for battle, training with the hero All Might. When the media breaks into U.A. High School, the students go to a rescue training facility off campus, but the villains break in as soon as they arrive. They have come to kill All Might. The students are thrown into various disaster areas of the arena, and are left to fight different villains on their own. Midoriya, Mineta, and Tsuyu are left in the flood zone. Using each of their quirks (superpowers), they formulate a plan to defeat the villains in their zone. When Tsuyu is threatened, Midoriya attacks, using his quirk flawlessly. Unfortunately, the hit lands on a bioengineered villain named Nomu and makes no damage. At this point, All Might arrives.
This volume is significantly more engaging than the last because of the various battles. The last section of this volume is the most exciting, because real villains are involved. The last volume had no real antagonist to the story, whereas this volume introduces Tomura Shigaraki, the apparent leader of the league of villains. This volume is also interesting because the reader learns more about individuals in Midoriya’s class. Each student's quirk is developed in their struggle to use it correctly and with power against the villains. The reader comes to know and understand the characters' motivations for their behavior. With the strength of the character development and plot, this is a great second volume to the series.

So good! We get training, some really bitter backstory between Deku and the ever annoying Bakugo (I still want to throw him off a cliff), a field trip with more expansion on the class, and, whoa, hang on, where did these villains come from?!?!
Things go from intense (like seriously do they want these kids to survive to become heroes or not?) to super mega intense when these random villains (hahaha, yeah sure they are…) pop up out of nowhere and the kids have to team up to fight them off. I loved the various teamups but the top one had to be Deku with Tsuyu (who I really like after all this, she’s cool) and Mineta (who’s a pervert and my least favorite character ever after Bakugo), because Deku just takes charge and leads them so so well and I’m so proud of him and how he handled this extremely intense situation! And Eraser-Head is becoming another favorite of mine which honestly surprised me as I thought he was a bit odd yet okay at first, but now he’s really cool and showed a lot of depth in just this small segment of the volume.
This was super intense in the best way, but make sure you have the next volume on hand when you read this because you’re going to want it!

Wow… there’s a lot going on here. This was incredibly dense. So many characters and quirks to keep track of. I’m really enjoying this series so far.

Again, I feel like if I were like 12 years younger, I would think this series was amazing. I like that we are getting more female characters, but I wished they seemed to matter and that that Mineta guy wasn't a complete creep? (I've heard he gets worse on TikTok).
Anyway, this volume kicks off as the kids get costumes and start training more to use their Quirks. A lot of the names for things are very vague and it makes me wonder if that's just a product of translating the series to English? We have heroes called "heroes" and villains called "villains" and I'm not sure the significance of Midoriya's attacks having U.S. states in them? Like Delaware Smash?
I'm curious to see what the next volume is like. The girl that controls sound is my favorite so far.

In questo secondo volume, seguiamo i progressi di Midorya Izuku e i suoi amici alla Yuei, la scuola per eroi più prestigiosa del Giappone. Ma durante il secondo allenamento, grazie al quale conosceremo l'eroe professionista Numero Tredici, la scuola verrà attaccata da pericolosi Villain. È un numero che lascia col fiato sospeso fino all'ultimo, oltretutto alcuni disegni sono incredibili, sembra di assistere alla scena e di sentire sulla pella la potenza degli eroi. Si fa sempre più interessante perché tanti e particolari sono i quirk di eroi e nemici. Mi è piaciuto un sacco!

Great graphic novel! Wasn’t feeling that much from the first but the fight with his exploding bully was cool and the cliffhanger will surely keep you invested for more. Witty humour (mostly), phenomenal art and the ability to really hammer in your interest. If you like superhero stories, read this one!
