DEBT OF THE MAFIA UNDERBOSS is Book 2 of The Costa Vendetta series. It's a short and steamy, instalove, OTT, age-gap, opposites-attract, grumpy-sunshine, forced-proximity, curvy teacher gets her mafia man romance. Matteo Costa is the 44-year-old hunky, grumpy, ruthless silver-fox mafia underboss-enforcer for the Costas. Clara is a 26-year-old sassy, fierce, curvy teacher who was sold by her father for his debts. Matteo bought the debt to gain shipping logs to bring down their enemy, but he also fell in love with Clara immediately and knew he needed to keep her safe. These Costa men love hard and fierce. Matteo was ruthless and possessive, but also a big teddy bear baker for his woman. Can he keep her safe? The chemistry between these two was explosive. I loved Clara's sass, and the ending was so happy after the drama. The war with the Bellantis is ramping up though for a full on mafia blood bath.

What caught me most off guard about this book wasn’t the connection between the two main protagonists, but how quickly Clara adapted to a life she never could have imagined. In less than twenty-four hours, Clara goes from being a third-grade teacher living an ordinary life to being ripped from everything she knows and handed over to one of the most dangerous men in the city as collateral for her father’s debt. Yet somehow, she doesn’t break, and even ultimately thrives. To say Matteo Costa is intimidating would be an understatement on the scale of calling the Shard just another tall building. With his pitch-black eyes, brutal build, and that unnerving predatory stillness, Matteo is the kind of man who commands a room without saying a word. But the moment Clara stood in his penthouse gripping a baseball bat and threatening to shatter his kneecap? That was when I knew this wasn’t going to be your typical captive romance. One of my favorite things about Clara was that, despite her fear, she never folded. She pushed back. She challenged Matteo and refused to become small just because he was larger than life. And Matteo? I was obsessed with the contrast in his character. On one side, you have the cold, ruthless mafia underboss who inspires fear wherever he goes. On the other, the man quietly kneading bread in the middle of the night, using flour and dough to quiet the demons in his head. That duality made him infinitely more compelling. What really got me, though, was the effect Clara had on him. From the moment she entered his world, she became his silence in the chaos—his anchor, his one place to breathe. His salvation. Watching someone as dangerous and emotionally barricaded as Matteo unravel, was easily one of the strongest parts of the story. That said, this was also where the story pushed believability a little. Clara’s emotional adjustment happens fast. And while I loved that she was fearless and slipped into Matteo’s world with surprising ease, some of her reactions, especially to the violence surrounding him, felt almost too accepting. When your captor casually disappears to eliminate half a dozen enemies and your response is basically “okay,” it does make you pause. Still, Matteo’s possessive, protective energy absolutely worked for me. He radiated pure “touch her and die” intensity, but what made it land was the reverence underneath it. The way he admired Clara’s sass, encouraged her fire, and never tried to dull what made her who she was. That hit on some deeply primal level. And the banter? Easily one of the highlights. Clara comparing Matteo’s mafia operation to managing a classroom full of third graders was hilarious... and honestly, not entirely inaccurate. “I am a third-grade teacher. Insanity is a prerequisite for the job.” Overall, this was another addictive, fast-paced read packed with danger, tension, emotional intensity, and plenty of spice. Not flawless, but undeniably entertaining and once I started, I didn’t want to put it down.

A simply unstoppable read, from moment I picked it up to the very finish it was totally captivating
Clara is a simple third grade teacher that lives in a crumbling one room apartment, she spends her nights grading spelling tests and reading stories by her class who she absolutely adores and she knows that this was never a career she was going to get rich in but she would not change teaching young minds it is very rewarding.
The suddenly her world is thrown in to turmoil as she leaves her classroom she is accosted by two giants that wordlessly put her into a car and drive her to a building she has never seen or been in before, the men refuse to answer any of her questions and yet she has that spidery feeling that tells her that Arthur Reeves has something to do with it.
Matteo Costa had known the moment that his men brought Clara to his apartment that she was his woman, it was the first time in over twenty years his mind had quieted and this has to be a miracle and he knows that his buying the contract had been more than the right thing to do, it had been fate and he also knew that there was no way he would ever allow her to leave and be put in such danger again, for as long as he drew breath.
He has to explain to the horrified teacher what her Lying, cheating, thieving father had done, that he had stolen information from the Bellanti family after he had renegued on a million-dollar outstanding debt and had then run to the Costa Mafia where he tried to make a bargain with the family. He wanted his debt with the Bellanti family cleared, as a sweeten he would also throw in his daughter who should be worth something to them.
At this point and especially after seeing the beautiful and incredibly innocent Clara he realised that she had no idea what her father had done, he swore that before the day was over, he would ensure that Arthur would never ever see or speak with her ever again! In fact, if he continued to breathe for more than another day he would be able to consider himself incredibly fortunate.
Clara like everyone that had lived in Chicago knew all about the story and what the Bellanti family had done over twenty years ago to the Costa brothers, the way that Matteo had arrived in a alley after an anonymous tip off finding his beloved father dead, his lifeblood being washed away and since that day the families had been at war and it seemed now that the information Arthur had stolen had painted a target on her back and they were determined rhey were going to kill her as quickly and as publicly as possible.
The instant attraction between both Matteo and Clara is a heartwarming read and the way that he shows her to bake bread in his huge kitchen and she tells him stories of her children seems to quieten his mind for the first time in over twenty years.
I thoroughly enjoyed the book and look forward to reading any future publications; keep up all the wonderful writing.

Matteo Costa is the underboss of the Costa syndicate and has been haunted by the murder of his father for twenty years. He is ruthless and violent but to quiet the demons in his mind he stress bakes bread in the middle of the night. When the opportunity arises to acquire important intel on the enemy Bellanti family via a man in crippled by gambling debt, he doesn't hesitate especially when the man also offers his only daughter as collateral. A daughter, by photo alone, captivates Matteo immediately.
Clara, younger and a third grade teacher is independent, intelligent, fierce, sassy and not afraid to take a stand when she finds herself locked in a penthouse with the lethal yet devastatingly handsome Matteo.
The push-pull dynamic between Matteo and Clara is there right from the start and Matteo doesn't fight the primal and possessive reaction to claim and protect her. I went into this expecting a dark “MMC buys a woman” storyline, but that’s really not what this is at all. So if the word bought has you hesitating, don’t let it scare you off. The MMC doesn’t come across as someone purchasing women, and the dynamic between them develops into something far more entertaining, emotional, and addictive.
And honestly… a bad boy who smells like a bakery? Impossible to resist.
The MMC is completely OOT, possessive, intense, and absolutely gone for Clara, while the FMC is brave, sassy, and refuses to back down from him. Their banter was one of my favorite parts of the book, especially this gem:
“You complain too much, Clara.”
“You bought me. You have to deal with the customer service issues.”
The size difference adds to the chemistry without overshadowing the story, and I loved that Clara never felt weak despite how intimidating the MMC could be. She pushes back, stands her ground, and slowly becomes the person who helps heal parts of him he thought were beyond saving.

Clara Reeves finds herself being kidnapped by two huge dangerous men and pushed into the penthouse above the Il Corvo Restaurant. She’s alone in-the apartment and doesn’t know why she’s been taken. She did bring her Louie Ville slugger bat with her. The guards just smiled at her when they saw it. Soon the penthouse elevator dings and in walks another very large man with silver in his hair and he just stares at her. When she tries to hit his knee caps, he quickly subdues the bat and her. Clara discovers that her father owed a gambling debt to the Costas in the mount of a Million dollars. He sold her as collateral for his debt and gave a thumb drive with shipping details of the Bellenti’s. The war is getting started when they try to breach the restaurant and Matteo’s penthouse for the data her father told and for Clara . It’s a fortress. Matteo has laid claim the Clara and will protect her at all costs. Good story and interesting characters.

Unfortunately, this story wasn't for me.
There were a lot of repetitive statements and descriptors that, once I took notice, I couldn't stop noticing. Some examples include how he smells like toasted flour and rum; his size (brutally heavy, sheer size of him, etc.); his "heavy gold chain," which is apparently a core feature of his; the obsession with the ink on his left shoulder, which is always flexing for some reason; the FMC and her grading tests; the scratching / scraping of his coarse beard; as well as someone always leaning on the black marble counter.
There were a few inconsistencies, which I noticed as well.
A weird point for me was that the FMC kept measuring the seriousness of her current experiences as a 3rd-grade teacher. I understand that it is a grueling job, but watching murders, being sold, having your house blown up, etc. makes it quite a wild association.
No hate to this author at all.

I have enjoyed all of Rica Lane's books, about MC or Mafia... and this book didn't disappoint. It's a bit on the shorter side, but that's not a bad thing either! This is Book 2 of the Costa Vendetta series, as interconnected standalones.

Matteo Costa is the perfect "OTT" alpha—ruthless and lethal, yet surprisingly human with his midnight stress-baking habit.

I loved that Clara wasn't a damsel in distress; her sass and independence made the "forced proximity" dynamic so much more engaging. Clara and Mateo’s story is book 2 of the Costa Vendetta series and it’s a good one, a few timeline moments, but nothing that detracts from the overall storytelling or its enjoyment. She’s a teacher sold to pay her father’s gambling debts, he’s a Costa who’s been fighting to stay alive and win a 20 year old war with a rival family. Between them they need to build trust and fast. Rica Lane is slowly giving us the picture of a mafia family that hits the morally grey areas of life, but truly comes down to “family is everything, and we need to do everything to avenge our parents deaths and keep Chicago in our hands so the Bellanti family doesn’t overwhelm it and cause the streets to run red with innocent blood.” I love this family and can’t wait to read more of the books. 4✨’s.

Clara's father is not a good man and attempted to clear his gambling debts by double crossing the Bellantis and selling their secrets and his daughter to the Costas to clear his gambling debt. Clara is angry and justifiably so but Matteo could not walk away from her once he saw her. The caveman in him claimed her and then set out to secure and keep her. Its a wild forced proximity ride with a defiant school teacher and a bread baking mafia underboss that works. He loves her fire and she falls for him despite their beginnings. Loved this book!! The more I learn about this family the more I crave the next book in the series.

Debt Of The Mafia Underboss is the 2nd book in the Costa Vendetta series. Clara is a third grade teacher. Not someone you expect to be grabbed from their home to settle a debt. This is all her crooked father's fault. He's put his daughter up as collateral for his debts, AND double crossed TWO Mafia families! Matteo is the Costa Family underboss. He's not someone you want to cross, or try to hit with a bat, but Clara does. Matteo is pretty much instantly enamored with Clara. It does take her a bit longer to fall in the circumstances. The fact that he bakes helps. I'm enjoying this series and look forward to the next addition.

Matteo, is the underboss of The Syndicate. Who knew that bread smelled so good? He will protect his asset. His collateral. How long would that last she has not nice father who traded her for a million dollar debt and as a bargaining chip. Matteo is found methodically needing the dough in order to make a sourdough. But he smells like fresh blistered forcaccia bread. The two do not relate of his size and stealth like grace. Clara is his. Clara is feisty, sassy and ready to verbally and physically banter and fight Mateo in order to stand her ground. He admires her for not backing down and that what makes this a very good book.

The book had potential it started out with a good story. I liked how the author just dove into the story instead of being over wordy. However this book is just too simplistic and predictable. It could definitely use some editing to remove repeats. The MF is a teacher but very naive and slow to understand the situation she's in. The book had potential it started out with a good story. I liked how the author just dove into the story instead of being over wordy. However this book is just too simplistic and predictable. It could definitely use some editing to remove repeats. The MF is a teacher but very naive and slow to understand the situation she's in. This is the second book in Costa Vendetta series. Tropes: Mafia, age gap, sold to the Mafia, forced proximity, and school teacher. Clara's father sold her to the Costa Mafia to settle a debt. Clara a third grade teacher is just trying to live her life when she is taken by Matteo Costa. Matteo may be a silent killer with trauma but he knows Clara is his to protect. I liked Clara and Matteo. They might be complete opposites but they understand each other. I enjoy the drama with the rival Mafia while the series continues.

Matteo paid Clara's father for the information he had stolen from their enemies and with that information he had thrown Clara in the mix as well. Matteo took it over to save Clara. There is something about this woman that calls to him. Who can't help but melt when you see this big scary alpha man who can bake better than anyone you have every seen. I loved the way Matteo takes care of Clara and makes her feel safe. I enjoyed every single moment of this book. The way these two come together made for a well-written story that keeps you engaged and smiling as these two navigate their difficult circumstances. This is a must read!!
