What. Did. I. Just. Read.??????????????????????

I have no words...none at all. My head is spinning...my fists are clenched...what?????

Image and video hosting by TinyPic

Please forgive me for completely going overboard here with my venting, but WHAT WAS THIS???

Super forbidden love going on here (until we learn the truth in the end).

Natasha, Tash, Presh, whatever -A spastic, dense, insecure, backbone missing, drama magnet "heroine" (if we can even call her that). The fact that she ALLOWED herself to be treated or talked to the way the H did blew my freaking mind!! I don't care if he had a freaking fighter jet in his pants - NOT. WORTH. IT. And her desperation to be with him was just nauseating on all levels.

Joshua, Josh, Scumbag, whatever -A douchebag who can't keep his schlong in his pants or his tongue in his mouth. Who calls the heroine a raving bitch...a beautiful/sexy slut...who tells her to f*ck off all the time...who just has ZERO romantic or sexual appeal to me...he disgusts me in more ways than one. I don't care how much he cared for the heroine.

This was downright demoralizing in my opinion. I'm STILL trying to figure out what exactly it is that makes these two love so deserving. They are both so TOXIC for each other, it's scary.

Why did I read this whole book? Because I needed to step out of my comfort zone but after this, it's calling me back. As much as I want to read the next installment to see what happens between these two, I can't take this emotional train wreck any longer.

Honestly. TOXIC!!!

This is going to be one of the harder reviews I’ve ever written. I hate writing critical reviews, but with all of the glowing four and five star reviews I just need to put it out there of what to expect with this book.

But first, let’s talk about what worked…When Joshua Stanton returns to Australia after seven years away, he immediately crosses paths with Natasha, the one who got away. The two had a whirlwind romance over a couple of months as teenagers and neither was able to get over the attraction to the other. Joshua left Australia, bound for the States in order to pursue a prestigious internship that later made him a near billionaire. Joshua was willing to give it all up to be with Natasha, but familial pressure caused her to break it off with him, telling a lie that Joshua believed for years. But the two immediately pick up where they left off when Joshua returns, much to the disapproval of the families of the couple. They have a major secret, and it’s seriously taboo.

I loved the taboo and the second chance love aspect of the story. I caught on pretty early that things weren’t quite what they seemed, but soon I found reading the book nearly painful. If it was just the incredibly toxic relationship between Natasha and Joshua and juvenile behavior on both of their parts that would be one thing, but the biggest problem with this book is that I’m relatively certain that at no point has it crossed the desk of an editor, or even a proofreader.

This book is probably one of the most egregious offenders of not showing versus telling that I have come across. The language is repetitive and superfluous, with the same words used over and over ad nauseum, instead of using descriptive language to express meaning. For instance, when doing a search of the words “wide” and “eyes” used together, there are forty-three results.

Examples:

I pull wide eyes at her…
I do wide eyes at her…
Abbie whispers, eyes wide…
He does wide eyes to accentuate his point.
He does wide eyes at me…
I do wide eyes at him…
Cameron does wide eyes to me…

You get the point. Not only do they have what comes across as the eyes of Muppets, but apparently when Joshua is aroused, he cracks his neck. He just so happens to crack his neck twenty-six times in the book; the poor guy has a perpetual hard-on. The author uses the word “deadpan” twenty times, most times in an awkward way. I don’t normally condone the use of a thesaurus to use words you might not normally use, but in this case, it would be beneficial. Stone-faced, straight-faced, expressionless…all provide the same meaning, yet provide a much more vivid picture than using the same word repeatedly. And:

He nods and smiles as he drains his glass. He nods an over-exaggerated nod.

That is a Creative Writing 101 offense right there. There are also other issues such as made up words (ordacity?) and using words incorrectly, such as inception.

“I know about the premeditated inception, you dumb fuck!” I scream.
He steps back in shock that I am onto him. “Inception?” he frowns.
“Inception means to plant an idea in another’s mind. What are you trying to plant in my mind Joshua?”

No, the MOVIE Inception is about exactly that, however what he is doing is trying to plant a seed of doubt, or deception. It’s things like this that made this book painful at times.

Also of note is that the narration is all over the place, without much of an indicator when there is a shift, other than two fonts are used. I had to go back and read passages over more than once because I was trying to figure out who was talking. There is a dual-person POV from the hero and heroine, as well as third person from time to time. There is no delineation between the shifts like a header or graphic or anything, making it quite confusing.

But finally, it is the use of regional slang that truly put me off. I understand that the author is Australian, and I read a lot of books by authors who speak other dialects of the English language, so I am familiar and comfortable with most expressions, however there were some used in this book that were just plain hilarious.

He raises a brow. “Are you eating?” Is he deluded? I shake my head. He hunches his shoulders and starts to tuck into his breakfast. I scowl again. He’s so annoying. He doesn’t care I’ve got the shits. I walk over and pour myself a coffee. I really am starving and he knows it, the asshole.
“Don’t you care that I’ve got the shits?” I snap.

Or:

He grabs me on the ass, “I like witty brunette beautiful sluts who are gagging for it.”

No. Just, no. While “the shits” might mean she’s upset, it’s really not appropriate in an erotic novel, especially when they’d been practicing some back door action a couple of chapters previously. I’m really concerned Natasha might have IBS, and there is nothing hot about that. And “gagging for it”, means she wants it, however there are several instances in which I’m picturing the poor woman retching, not becoming aroused.

So, it’s obvious this book didn’t do it for me and I won’t continue on with the series as it took me two weeks to get through this one to begin with (I can usually get through a book every day or two). An editor could cut half of this book and you’d never know the difference, other than to make it a lot easier to read. I thought the storyline had a lot of promise, but the writing read like a draft and the characters were unlikeable at best. I know a lot of people have liked this book and many more probably will, but I just needed to be honest in my assessment.

OMG this book! It literally gave me whiplash. Like the couple I was in love one minute, ready to kill them the next, and all the while hoping for their HEA.

Nothing about Josh and Natasha's relationship is easy, and over time their hardships wore on me. However, it is addictive and I obviously have to read their sequel now.

Do I recommend?

If you are into forbidden love, okay with serious angst, and in the mood for something super hot - YES!

DNF @ 40%.

The h is a clinical psychologist while the H is a billionaire tech guy. Unfortunately, these characters were incredibly immature; they spoke and acted like idiots. By the way, you can't be a clinical psych at the age of 25. You would be closer to 30. Oh and did I mention that the H who is a rich tech guru also participates in underground cage fighting? My eyes rolled so many times when I was reading this book, I didn't even finish the story!! The h slept with the H when they were teens but after they broke up, she never slept with anyone again. She was celibate for 6-7 yrs while the H was sleeping with many women sometimes more than one at a time. The h had horrible loud mouth sex crazed friends who encouraged her to dress slutty and have casual sex. And this donkey went along with it. The H was devastated when they separated as teenagers but the h was doing all the chasing and begging when they meet again. I hate that!! I will not be reading this series.

So, this is an author I had never heard of. And I am shocked! This book is so far beyond amazing I think everyone needs to read it! EVERYONE!!!

At the end of chapter two, we are given some information that may make you turn your head, but trust me, you NEED to keep reading.

This book is told primarily from the perspective of Natasha, although we do get some glimpses of the other characters. Natasha has truly loved only one man in her life. She has been in love with him for seven years, even though they have not been together since she was 17. Now that they are thrust together via a wedding, you had better strap in because you are about to embark on a wild and very HOT ride!

Joshua (Josh) is a man whore, plain and simple. He may never settle down or reign himself in. He is also very rich and an alpha through and through. When he stands up for his brother’s wedding, all bets are off when he sees Natasha for the first time in seven years.

HOLY HELL BATMAN. I was not expecting that! And whatever it was, I loved it and need more. Right now. When things are not what they appear, signals get crossed, jealousy sprouts, and then the making up is EXPLOSIVE! There are some fade to black scenes in this book, but trust me if there were not, it would be too much. But when the curtain stays open and we get a peek behind closed doors…you will need a fan, batteries and any willing partner you can find to help you scratch the itch.

Also, make sure to grab your blankie, a box of tissues, a bottle of wine, and some headache meds (you will need them for the book hangover) and then dig in and enjoy! ~ Devlynn, 5 Mother Lovin’ stars

~~~
What a freaking amazingly hot book!!!! The beginning was a little slow but as soon as Joshua Stanton made his appearance it was like a freight train with nothing to stop him!
Natasha and Joshua fell in love when she was 17 and he 19. Their love was one that was forbidden on every level, yet they couldn't fight what the heart wanted. Natasha made a decision that she thought was best, not only for her but especially for Joshua, and from then on neither of their lives has been the same.
When Joshua returns to Australia after seven years, Natasha doesn't know what he will be like or if he will even remember her but, let me tell you, the first time they see each other in seven years had me getting all hot and bothered and yelling at my tablet, "Just go ahead and get it on for crying out loud!" If I thought that was intense, well, I was definitely not prepared for the rest of the book. It burned my tablet's battery from it overheating because let me say, the sex scenes were freaking scorching HOT!!!
As Joshua and Natasha "talk" things over about what's been going on with them the last past years and, while I couldn't help but feel the frustration they had for one another for the years they lost, what really stood out was the sexual tension between these two. They couldn't have a decent conversation without fighting because they realized they both had changed.
There is plenty of drama, angst and those curve balls that had me once again yelling at my tablet "What The F*ck Just Happened"??? Joshua and Natasha now have some tough decisions to make about their lives; will they give their relationship a try? Will they allow their families to come between them or will fight for what they want this time?
This is the first book I've read from TL Swan and I'm definitely hooked!! ~ Kara, 5 Scorching Hot Stars
There were so many things wrong with this book, yet I couldn’t stop reading it. It’s like a car crash that you can’t look away from. The ultimate rubber necking book.
The formatting was horrendous. My high school English teacher would have had a field day with this book. She would have burned through a whole pack of red pens.
The story was ridiculous, but I couldn’t put it down. The heroine is a psychologist, but acted like an immature middle schooler. And the reason the main characters shouldn’t be together is an extremely legitimate reason, yet people in their lives kept encouraging it. Trust me, when you find out what it is, you’ll freak out. But again, I couldn’t stop reading.
I still can’t put my finger on why I liked this book so much regardless of the terrible formatting, ridiculous storyline, and immature heroine that made a joke of her psychology profession.
Definitely a guilty pleasure read.
Dnf. This is bad.
The main characters are both unbelievably dumb. I can’t deal with the stupidity of making out with your first cousin on a dance floor in front of both families.
I get it, he is probably not a first cousin , but they seem to think so, and can’t fucking be taboo about it😂 making out like teenagers even though they are both professionals 🤦‍♀️🤦‍♀️
I give up, the fmc is going to be the death of me.
Holy hit by a monster truck! I loved this book by TL Swan. Joshua Stanton is all kinds of McSwoony and I absolutely loved the struggle and the tension between him and the leading female character, Natasha.
There are so many twists and turns along the way that I couldn't even begin to tell you what kind of road it goes on. All I can say is that it never once made me think I knew what was coming. There is plenty of hot, steamy moments between the two of these characters, and despite the obvious elephant in the room, you can't help but cheer them on and hope like holy hell that they get together.
It's fire meets fire and when they throw it down, all kinds of flames fly high. Their relationship is fantastically written, as are the side characters, and I love the fact that we get to see both points of view along the way, although it is predominately Natasha's voice we hear more of.
If you're looking for a new read that takes you from cold to hot, calm to raging, dreamy sighing to growling at your kindle... This is one for you!
Such a fabulous read from a talented author. Well done, TL! :)
DNF @60% (I’m practically heaving at this point)When a guy acts the way Joshua did, please, run a hundred miles on the opposite direction. This is basically a reminder not to trust tiktok recommendations. The way they overhyped this book is crazy. Its definitely the worst books I’ve ever read in my entire life. My fists are clenched the entire time I was reading.
First of all, I can pretty much tolerate any plots EXCEPT the incest plot. Like, no. Plus, I’ve never hated the name Joshua/Josh up until I’ve met this hero (oh wait, can we even call him a hero? Because he was such a whore who pretty much fucks everything that moves)
Oh and get this, what infuriates me is that the heroine was celibate for like 7 years because she loves the guy so much. Like??? He was drowning in women and you are telling me that the heroine decided to be celibate for years? Talk about double standards. I REPEAT, I WANT THE HEROINE TO ENJOY HER SEXUAL LIFE.
AND ANOTHER ONE, he calls her derogatory names ALL THE DAMN TIME. I cannot fathom how someone could be with a guy who treats her that way?! Absolutely infuriating. He calls her “bitch”, “slut” and everything. Girl, I’m telling you, you should’ve ran the opposite direction the moment she called you a bitch. Like, that’s a huge NO NO.
I first read about Joshua when I was reading Dr. Stanton and I DISLIKED his character there. I thought that reading this book would redeem him but no, it’s impossible.
To al of you reading this review, if you see this book, please run the other way.
Where do I even start! I loved this. I hated this (at times). But... I could not PUT IT DOWN! Immediately after finishing this book I bought books two and three and read the entire trilogy, cover to cover!
Stanton Adore brings us the story of Natasha and Josh, they haven’t seen each other for seven years and it seems neither of them have moved on. But this wasn’t just a second-chance love story. This was far more complicated. It was a HOT MESS.
We are hit with some surprises early on and I’m not even going to go there. Just read it and find out for yourself. I can say, I did not see THAT coming.
I do admit that I wanted to strangle these two so much throughout this story. They were so immature at times. But you know what, I did not care. I loved it. It worked. It had me pulling out my hair and turning the page to find out what was going to happen next, all at the same time.
This was purely addicting. There were some minor issues throughout the book that would typically drive me insane (small things might have been caught in the newly released boxed set) – but they just didn’t matter to me once I got into the story. Which is saying a lot. The story was gripping enough that I was hooked and had to dive right into the next book to find out what happened next
If you like angsty reads, this is a great series to dive into. Beyond the angst, forbidden type love, second chance... themes – you get a hot man-whore alpha male with Josh. Jesus that man. His mouth. His. COCK. Perfection. I was gagging for a one way trip to pound town.
I don't want to be nasty but I'm not sure where all the 5 star ratings for this book are coming from. Firstly, from a grammatical point of view, it needs a lot of work. There are spelling mistakes, punctuation errors and whole scenes that just run into each other without a break in between. I was constantly rereading sections that didn't make sense until I realised it was a whole different day or location.
The characters are very unlikeable. Natasha is 24 and obviously very intelligent ( she's a clinical psychologist) but she acts like a 15 year old. She's a bitch, bossy and even though she's apparently gorgeous, with a hot body and brains, she's so insecure it's embarrassing. Josh is just an arsehole who apparently worships her but treats her like shit. Actually, they both treat each other like shit and call each other some demeaning things (and I don't mean dirty sex talk, just in general day to day conversations). Usually in these types of books, even though characters fight or go through a few rough patches, there's redeeming features that makes you want them to stick it out. I felt nothing for these two.
As for the storyline, the whole cousin was very off putting.
I'm not looking forward to reading the second book at all. If either of these two were my friends, I'd drop their self-centred, annoying, childish arses in an instant.
Whoa... there is just so much drama packed into this book. Damn!
Joshua and Natasha fell in love in their teens. Their relationship was 'taboo' so she made a sacrifice and broke both of their hearts. Seven years later, the love is still strong, still deep. But Joshua was a serious slut while they were apart. Hurdle number one. Their relationship is still 'taboo'. Hurdle number two. Joshua's mom is mean and manipulative. Hurdle number three. Let's not forget that Joshua and Natasha are freakin LOCO. That's hurdle number four.
There was so much back and forth in this book, that if you're not a patient person, you will effin lose your mind! And why was Natasha characterized as the 'beggar' in this story? If anyone should have been begging, it should have been Joshua. Some of the things he did and said were forgiven way too easily. I get he's hot. But hit men can grovel. The world won't end if they do. I would have liked it more if he was the one doing the chasing. Besides that, why did he get away with calling the so-called love of his life a bitch or a slut? And she liked it?! Suffragists were turning in their graves!!
I really liked the side characters. Adrian was the one who stood out the most. I just love masculine gay men. He was written really well. Cameron was another. These boys were just too sweet and funny. Bridget and Abbs were wonderful friends as well. Their entire crew was on point.
Now that ending was crazy!! I have a firm love/hate relationship with cliffys. Thankfully I already have book 2. I'm hoping for a little less drama and a lot more love. I hope it doesn't disappoint.
I Adore Stanton
This is my third read of The Stanton Series and Stanton Adore gets better with every read. This is TL Swan’s debut novel and it’s a complex love story that starts when the main characters Natasha 17 and Joshua 19 fall in love, happily ever after I want to live the rest of my life with you love.
But it’s a forbidden and taboo love and they can never be together.
Fast forward seven years later and they’re reunited. They can’t fight their feelings any longer and they begin to explore what they have together but they don’t have an easy path. Joshua can be an arsehole and wants things done his way and Tash a drama queen. Can they find their happily ever after or are there too many obstacles in their way?
Saying their relationship is complicated is an understatement. They fight more than they love. They’re passionate and volatile and there’s so much angst and drama but it suits the volatile nature of both characters. I love the support characters, they don’t just fill the pages they add to the story and bring a level of humour that’s needed to break the drama.
The story is set in Australia and the characters are Australian so I would’ve liked to have seen Australian English used rather than American English. Some spacing issues and if they were tidied up the story would flow better between scene changes.
Their story continues in Stanton Unconditionally, book two and is a four part series.
So, I read Dr. Stanton first and absolutely loved it! Then I started the Stanton series with really high hopes, even my GR friends gave it high ratings so this might be an issue of it's me not you.
The cousin thing did not bother me, the Aussie slang though hard to understand at times was endearing, the writing flowed and was well written. My problem was the two main characters. I found them very annoying to the point I tried to dnf it at least 10 times.
Natasha's character started out great but she acted like a hormonal teenager not a twenty something college educated psycologist. She even called herself a drama queen more times than I can count but to her credit she admitted and apologized for her over reactions.
I was not feeling the hero at all. Shocking! I mean he was rich, gorgeous, smart, well endowed man with an Ausie accent. What's not to love right? I thought he was as temperamental and as OTT dramatic as the heroine. Really I thought he was an ass most of the time.
So although I don't plan to finish this series, l loved Dr. Stanton and will give her future books a try.
I have read all the Marx books, the Dr. Stanton series and The Miles High Club Series prior to reading this series and loved all of them. I'm glad I read them before starting this series. Otherwise, I would have not read any of your books at all.
Cousins...really?!? Yes in the end they truth comes out that they are not related in the end, but to write a book where two people come to terms and sensationalize incest until the very end!?! Really, that is the plot you go with? To not pre warn your readers about the incest plot in the book summary was idiotic. This incest theme is disturbing. You added even more incestrial relationshios within all of the Staton and Marx series have some sort of incest twist within each storyline. In both series. What is your deal with incest? Are you really a Psychology student? This seems like a no brainer to me.
Ever stop and think that maybe some of your reader might be victims of incest that was not consensual? This plot might of triggered some emotional distress for victims of incest. Or even inflict true victims with self doubt about the level of severity in regards to what happened to them, and that maybe it wasn't as wrong or taboo as they originally thought it was, because you made it appear as if it could be sexy and romantic in some circumstances.
The characters behavior and intellect was also very off putting as well. They did not act like individuals who were supposedly well educated and successful in business. The storyline also bounced around to much and was very confusing to follow at times. I'm very disappointed with this book to say the least.
Here's another sexist fucking author!
- h celibate for 7 yrs, he was a huge manwhore. Even slept with a stripper after seeing the h again, AND the h did all the chasing.
- They break up a lot during the series and she's ALWAYS faithful and celibate, but H sleeps around during their mini break ups.
-book 2: h is still the one chasing him, and H gives her permission to sleep with om, and she refuses.
++ GR friend Rose's Safety Spoilers: ++
During this series, they break up A LOT and so they're separated a lot. During the separation- the hero hooks up with other girls.
4.5 stars for the storyline. This book has a bit of everything I enjoy in a story, young love, hot millionaire with an Aussie accent, likable characters, taboo relationship, some suspense, angst and scorching sex. So glad I waited until book 2 was out to start this series bc the end of this book is a huge cliff. I can only imagine how much this author got from her readers to hurry up bc book 2 was needed. Now onto Stanton Unconditional!!!!!
I don’t really know where to begin with this book. This is an Australian author, and from what I can tell, her first book. The formatting and structure was off, and I did find myself a bit frustrated with the flow, at times. It could have definitely used a good editing.
The theme seems to be “forbidden,” but the MC’s have a whole other host of issues that are neck and neck with the taboo element. Natasha, is a clinical sexual psychologist in Australia, who’s only ever been with Joshua, when she was seventeen and he was nineteen years of age. Josh, went away to America, and became a computer tech millionaire. She’d never been able to move on with another man intimately, and he’s done nothing but sleep around! He’s totally alpha, to the point of being OTT at times, and you’d think she’d be more aware of how to handle someone like him! *rolls eyes* Lots of back and fourth, and ‘drama llama behavior!’ Lol
However, it was enticing enough for me to go onto the next one. I read all four books in the series back to back, so reviewing these should be interesting;)
Wow! I can describe this book in 2 words - HOT and TOXIC! I kept hearing Brittany Spears in the back of my mind as I was reading.
Natasha and Josh are first cousins, who happen to fall in love in their late teens. Natasha breaks it off, fearing that he will ruin his future if he gives up everything to be with her. After many years apart, they reconnect at a family wedding in Australia and pick up immediately where they left off.
The relationship between Natasha and Josh is probably the most toxic relationship I've ever read and I needed to cleanse my head with a sweet YA book after this one. There is a lot of make up, break up and making the other person jealous. Don't get me wrong, I still LOVED every moment of it. On top of that, Josh is one kinky fuck!
"The woman I marry will have to endure hours and hours of being tied up to our bed, legs spread wide while I pleasure her with my tongue and fuck her with my hands and then continually driving into her tight cunt with my cock so hard she won't know where I end and she begins. Only to be rolled over and taken again from behind. Constantly. She would have to love taking me orally and vaginally and anally...Repeatedly"
If you think that's hot, there's plenty more where that came from! Josh likes to call Natasha his "beautiful slut" and even makes a very naughty video of the two of them together.
The secondary characters in the story are extremely well written and the relationship between Natasha, her sister Bridget and best friend Abbie is hilarious, with several laugh out loud moments.
"Oh no," Abbie scowls towards the counter.
"What?" I ask as I sip my coffee.
"It's Tunnel cunt." I can't help it - I spit my coffee all over Bridget
"How do you know she has a tunnel cunt? Actually, what is its definition?" Abbie and I are in fits of giggles
Although the storyline is forbidden, I wanted it to be more taboo. Yes, they were first cousins, but everyone knew about the relationship except for the parents. Once the friends and siblings found out it sort of lost some of the illicitness.
Stanton Adore does end on quite a cliffhanger, but not to worry because book 2, Stanton Unconditional is already out! :-) I highly recommend reading Stanton Adore, especially for those that are interested in an explosively hot and forbidden relationship.
Totally addicting! I loved the story. It's one of forbidden love that has twists and secrets, awesome secondary characters and funny dialogue. The two main characters, Joshua and Natasha are amazing together! Josh is a domineering, possessive prick that is in love with Natasha but he makes some shit decisions at times. Natasha is a psychologist so she's prone to over-analyze everything and that just causes more drama. There are so many unanswered questions at this point and this does end on a cliffhanger. This is one that gave me all the feels... between the hot sex with the MC's and the awful feeling of what is to come, these two were a big mess at times. I must know what happens, so I'm moving on to the next book!
Y’know when you do a re-read and think to yourself what was I thinking the first time round. Yeah that’s what was happening here. I initially gave this 5 stars but it just didn’t grab me like it did before.
HOWEVER, this is a guilty pleasure of mine, I could not put it down. I love it and hate it so much. Josh and Tash literally give me whiplash and there is so much drama going on which makes it so interesting and addictive. There is so much angst, a forbidden love aspect and it’s also second chance not to mention it’s super steamy. So if you like that I would definitely recommend, just be prepared for the up and down relationship between H and h.
Compulsive and gloriously trashy, I haven't been able to put this down. It's a bit like a cross between a Jerry Springer episode and a filthy romance. I read Dr Stanton first and so know how these two end up which has been a relief at times.
The writing was a bit choppy at the start with the narrative switching randomly between first and third, the slut shaming gets a bit much at times and I had to snigger whenever a character 'gets the shits ' at another (around my way, 'getting the shits' has a more literal meaning and necessitates hours sitting on the toilet) but despite all of that, it's utterly compulsive reading. It also benefits from some top notch smut. Like his brother, he's also blessed in the trouser snake department so happy days.
Ends on a major cliffhanger, but the series is complete and available on ku.
