Piper Wakefield hasn’t set foot in Hickory Hollow in a decade. But when her Aunt Alice dies, Piper inherits a house, a flower shop—and a destiny she never asked for. Alice wasn’t just the town florist; she was the Guardian of the Crossroads, the one who kept monsters from slipping through the veil. And now Piper is next in line.
The only person willing to help her? Owen McAllister—childhood friend, longtime admirer, and the one man determined to show Piper that coming home might be exactly what she needs.
But danger is rising along the magical highway, and Hickory Hollow’s quaint charm hides far darker secrets. When a gate breaks open, unleashing a threat that could destroy the town, Piper and Owen must trust each other—and the spark growing between them—before the road to hell runs right through Hickory Hollow.

Cozy small-town Texas meets Once Upon a Time, with witches, druids, fairies, demons, and a storybook queen addicted to the home shopping channel. The characters were fantastic, and I loved the chemistry between Piper and Owen.
There are a lot of mysterious things happening in Hickory Hollow such as portals allowing demons to enter the town, and while the book had a satisfying conclusion, we're far from the end of the story. I'm really looking forward to the next installment and more of this charming cozy fantasy series!

Thank you to Michelle Miles for providing me with an ARC in exchange for an honest review. All thoughts are my own.
There’s something undeniably magical about a story that transports you to another world, and Petals & Portals did exactly that. Filled with enchanting landscapes, captivating magic, and characters who quickly felt like friends, this fantasy was an absolute delight from beginning to end.
Michelle Miles has created a world that feels vibrant and full of wonder. Every portal opens the door to new adventures, hidden dangers, and unforgettable discoveries, making it impossible not to become completely immersed. The world-building is imaginative without ever feeling overwhelming, allowing the story and its characters to remain at the heart of the journey.
The characters are wonderfully written, each bringing their own strengths, flaws, and personality to the adventure. Watching them face unexpected challenges, forge meaningful connections, and grow throughout the story made every victory feel earned and every setback hit just a little harder. Their relationships are full of warmth, loyalty, and just the right amount of tension to keep you invested.
One of my favorite aspects of the novel was its sense of adventure. Every chapter offered something new, whether it was a magical discovery, a dangerous encounter, or a heartfelt moment that reminded me why I cared so deeply about these characters. The pacing kept me engaged from start to finish, balancing action, emotion, and mystery beautifully.
As the opening book in the Enchanted Realms: Crossroads series, Petals & Portals lays the perfect foundation for what promises to be an exciting magical adventure. The ending left me eager to discover where the next portal will lead.
"Sometimes all it takes is one doorway to change your entire world—and one brave step to discover who you're truly meant to be."
If you're looking for a fantasy filled with portal magic, enchanting worlds, heartfelt friendships, and an adventure that sparks your imagination, Petals & Portals is one you'll definitely want to add to your TBR.

Today I read “Petals and Portals” by author Michelle Miles.
Piper left small town Hickory Hollow, TX for Manhattan 10 years ago and did not look back. Unexpectedly, she lost her job, her boyfriend and her apartment…and received a call that her Aunt had just died back home. Her precious Aunt Alice who cherished her. Taught her all about gardening while sharing stories of magic and enchanted things. When Piper finds out at the reading of the will that Alice left her the flower shop and house she is confused and overwhelmed. This was NOT her life plan.
Let’s add to that finding out that your Aunt is the Guardian of the veil that protects that Hickory Hollow and beyond from monsters and villains with only malevolent intentions. And now she has left that legacy to Piper….surprise! Can her friend Owen from high school and a cast of other human and fantasy folks can help Piper try to save the town?
And why does her heart start to beat so differently when she sees Owen now?
You need to pick this book up and find out!
I absolutely loved this book. I’m very new to fantasy but I’m definitely a cozy mystery/witchy reader so I wanted to give it a try. And what a joy it was. It made my Sunday. It’s a lovely book where it’s so easy to get to invest in the characters, picture the town, feel the suspense of the story, and the anticipation of a “will they or won’t they” chemistry. I didn’t want it to end!
I understand it’s the first of a trilogy. I hope the author is writing quickly!
Highly recommend!

Sometimes the quaint little towns of your youth are hiding more than neighborhood secrets, they might be hiding witchcraft, fairies, a mysterious portal, and some kind of dark demon trying to cross into your world... and also your highschool rival has grown into a very handsome man. Returning to her hometown for a funeral has unexpectedly set Piper on a path she wasn't expecting when she is named the heir to all of Aunt Alice's worldly possessions. She may not have wanted to run a flower shop, but now she has inherited a magical grimoire, a fairy queen and the guardianship of the nearby portal, which somehow Alice never seemed to mention. When Piper meets her old frenemy Owen, it's the final straw in a world turned upside down , although his truck is air-conditioned when he offers a ride in the Texas heat. Owen might also have some answers to the many questions about Alice, the portal and the dark entity that can control Piper with just a glance, as necessity draws them together old hurts start thawing into friendship or maybe more. Hickory Hollow might be Hallmark movie cute, but the spicy time is for adults only 🔥 This book is filled with witty banter, longing looks and learning to find the person you were meant to be, and possibly the Red Queen sitting on your couch eating snacks. The full moon rises soon and Piper must stand strong against the darkness in order to close the portal and save the town from magical invasion. Come watch Piper and Owen's story unfold in this first installment of a contemporary magical romance.
⭐️⭐️ (2 stars) | Great concept, but too rushed to pull me in
I wanted to love this one so badly. As an avid fantasy reader who loves fairy and fairytale-inspired stories, the premise immediately caught my attention: small-town magic, inherited destiny, portals, monsters, and a flower shop tied to something much darker. On paper, it sounded exactly like something I would enjoy.
Unfortunately, the execution didn’t work for me.
The story moved so quickly that it started to feel unrealistic. I wanted more suspense, more atmosphere, and more detail to help pull me into Hickory Hollow and make the magic feel believable. Instead, things happened so fast that I never felt fully grounded in the world or emotionally invested in what was unfolding.
The family drama at the beginning also felt unnecessary to me because it didn’t really go anywhere or add much to the story overall. Piper goes from knowing nothing about magic to accepting everything very quickly, befriending a fairy in the garden almost immediately, and falling for the boy next door within days. It all felt too convenient and underdeveloped.
I could see this maybe working better for a younger YA audience, but even then, the pacing and flow didn’t grab me. There wasn’t enough tension or buildup, and I found myself skimming through most of it rather than feeling pulled along by the story.
Overall, the idea had a lot of potential, but it needed more depth, stronger worldbuilding, and a slower pace to really capture me. Unfortunately, this one just wasn’t for me.
This is a fun, snarky book about a women who returns to her hometown to attend her aunt's funeral and gets gobsmacked at the reading of the will. Her aunt has left her everything. This inheritance includes a house (with greenhouse), a flower shop, a car, and plenty of cash. Considering that Piper had just lost her dream job, her boyfriend, and her apartment, she really did need a change of scenery. Of course the differences between Manhatten and Hickory Hollow, Texas were many and the heat and humidity were two of the biggest ones. A familiar looking man offers her a ride to her aunt's house as she attempting to walk there in heels and the soupy atmosphere. She knows she knows him, but what is his name?
Great world-building. Piper thought the inheritance was weird, she ain't seen nothing yet. The rabbit hole she has fallen into is truly epic. The great descriptions will make you laugh.
'...I watched my mother work the crowd. Black dress, pearls, hair in a tight bun, jeweled reading glasses hanging on a chain. She accepted every hug with a tremble of her bottom lip and a damp handkerchief pressed dramatically to her nose. If grief were a performance, Gladys deserved an Oscar.'
Grab the book, you'll love it. Of course, there is more to come. The drama has just begun. I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.
This cozy magical romance was the perfect read for a rainy day. We start off in a small town with a daughter coming home due to destiny intervening. Piper is our sweet main character, who is caught up in an inheritance that she cannot deny, that comes along with a portal and a flower shop. Reading about her coming home to a small town had me remembering how it felt to visit my own small town after being gone a while. It is both odd and exciting to see the things you used to remember but suddenly they seem so small.
We also have Owen, a guy who is both handsome and mysterious, who is someone from her past that she cannot avoid. Their flirty banter was exactly what we needed in this cozy fantasy. He is the one who can help her get a grasp on her new inherited destiny, and with the help of a few new friends, she will be able to continue the guardianship of the portal. They bring a chemistry to the story, without making it a serious romance that overshadows the magic of the book.
I loved this story so much. I was actually disappointed when it was finished and I realized I had to wait on the second book. Fate, romance, small towns, and a quest makes this book the perfect read.

Once again, another fab read by Michelle. Like at this stage I fear she can do no wrong and I am so glad that I was able to read this arc and give you my thoughts.
What is better than small town romance, I hear you ask, throwing in magic, ancient power, and coming to terms with a truth you weren't ready for.
Like I adore small town romances, I also adore fantasy and magic and all of the fun stuff, and this combined it almost perfectly. Piper and Owen, are so cute together, the way she's coming to terms with everything, the loss of her aunt, finding out she's been left everything in the Will, including a life she wasn't ready for, and doesn't know if she wants, and the way Owen stands by her, helping her, even when he's technically throwing more confusion into her life.
The magic system is super easy to understand, you get some super familair faces from fairy tales we all know and love.
The only thing that I would have perhaps changed is a little pacing of the book, it starts super fast paced, we learn a lot of information, and danger, and then towards the end it sorta slows down. I feel like if we had more of the end of the book, at the start, and a gradual increase in tension and danger, it would have been five stars.
This was a cozy supernatural book with a small town feel. I think small town stories can be hit or miss as they are sometimes quite slow, but the first half of this book in particular was very well paced. The second half of the book dragged a bit, and there were a few scenes that could've been removed to provide a faster read with a quicker pace. However, there was still a good amount of mystery, though the twists were rather predictable. Some of the supernatural elements were silly, but I liked the good vs. evil theme.
The side characters were enjoyable, and the romance was passionate and full of chemistry without being overly lust focused. Piper was an adaptable yet slightly selfish and immature character. I wish Owen had been more dominant and assertive, but I admired his quiet persistence and dedication to Piper throughout the novel. The book ended with lingering questions but no major cliffhanger.
Overall, this was a sweet romance with elements of mystery and the supernatural. I recommend it to those who prefer lower-stakes, lighthearted stories. *I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.*
Piper Wakefield left her small hometown ten years ago for the big city swearing she would never go back. But when her aunt dies, she will return to Hickory Hollow only to find out that her aunt left her everything. A house, a flower shop, and she is now the new Guardian of the Crossroads, a magical destiny she never would have asked for, nor one that she wants. Owen McAllister admired Piper throughout high school. He wants her to stay, but he will have to convince her that they are meant to be, and that together they can protect the town and the people they love. Absolutely wonderful characters that make this a must read. While Piper struck me somewhat immature for her age, she made me laugh at times and she did step up when she realized that she might be the only one with the power to save the town. All of the characters in this book are well written and compelling and kept me entertaining from the first page. This is a paranormal cozy fantasy romance with magic, fairies, and some unexpected twists in the plot that I recommend to other readers.
I voluntarily reviewed a complimentary ARC provided by Book Sirens.
Petals & Portals takes the much-loved but familiar contemporary Texas Homecoming romance trope and wonderfully injects all sorts of cozy magic. Down on her luck (possibly magically-instigated) Piper Wakefield returns home to bury a much-beloved aunt but finds herself having to stay in the small town of her youth to solve several mysteries (and run her late-aunt’s flower shop). Enter the high school nemesis-slash-crush, the handsome Owen McAllister, who didn’t leave town after graduation. The two have major sparks. Turns out Owen may have been carrying a torch for Piper all these years—and a trunk full of secrets that may help Piper solve some of those mysteries. The romance here is truly hot; Piper is a character you root for; and there are a number of truly memorable side characters. A terrific first instalment in a new series (Enchanted Realms: Crossroads); I am honestly looking forward to more.
Note: I received an Advanced Reader Copy of this novel from the author; all thoughts and opinions are my own.
This book is a simple, clean read that perfectly mixes small-town romance with fantasy elements. The plot was simple, with our main character, Piper, returning to her hometown only to find out there is more waiting for her there than she had planned. The fantasy elements were well thought out and explained, and the questions Piper has to answer were genuinely interesting to me as a reader. The romance is cute, and it is a good plot addition rather than being overwhelming.
The ending of the book felt rather rushed to me. I hadn't known what to expect at the end of the book, especially as I noticed I was nearing the end, but the ending almost felt like an afterthought. It was a bit expository, and Piper felt somewhat passive for the first time in the book with how she figured more about the role she came into. That being said I would be interested in reading the next book because there are so many questions unanswered and so many problems that I want to see how Piper goes about solving.
I'd really enjoyed Michelle Miles' short story, Once Upon a Silver Strand, so leaped at the chance to read her new novel Petals & Portals. It does not disappoint!
Chemistry steamier than a July afternoon in Texas ✔️ Murder, Magic & Mystery ✔️ Family Discord ✔️ Small Town Vibes ✔️ Slightly Snarky Fairy ✔️ Inherited Destiny ✔️ Family Secrets ✔️ Friends to Lovers ✔️
With perfect pacing and a well crafted storyline the novel kept my interest throughout. I loved Piper and Owen's dynamic and the obvious chemistry between them. The realizations Piper came to as she learned the truth about the flower shop, Aunt Alice and herself made for an interesting story arc.
It's obvious this is a first book in a series and there's plenty more to look forward to in book two.
I received an e-arc via BookSirens. All opinions are my own and freely given.
This was such a good read - literally couldn’t put it down and had to read the entire thing in one sitting! LOVED the characters, the plot, the setting, ALL of it - and I can’t wait to see where things go in book 2. The banter, turns, the way Piper is desperately trying to figure out everything, her Aunt’s death, the magic, the flower shop she keeps forgetting to open/go in to work at while trying to figure out and juggle the slightly more immediately pressing issues of the Crossroads, figuring out just wtf she’s doing, the Council’s threats, finding a tiny bit of time to enjoy some long over due romance, familial revelations/long hidden truths, and soo much more and everything else - I can’t wait to see where books 2+ takes the story and characters :)

I can’t wait to see where this series goes. Piper’s having a rough time—she loses her job, catches her boyfriend cheating, then a fire destroys her apartment, and to top it off, she gets a call that her beloved aunt has died. Now she’s back in Hickory Hollow, a place she swore she’d never return to, trying to make sense of it all. She plans to attend the funeral and then leave, but that changes when she learns she’s inherited everything from her aunt. An old friend, Owen, steps in to help, though he’s hiding secrets that could change everything. In fact, it seems too many people in town have secrets. Piper discovers her aunt was a witch who had been protecting the town, and now it’s her turn—but she has no idea how to start. With Owen and a few others by her side, she begins to face each challenge head-on. Will she be able to save her corner of the world?
If I had to describe this book in 3 words I would choose magical, creative, and captivating. And as an avid gardener I really enjoyed all the nods to nature throughout this book. The attention to detail on the characters and the world around them made me feel like I was reading from inside a magical greenhouse waiting for a fairy to show themselves rather than sitting on my couch. The light hearted banter back and forth between some of the main characters was a nice addition to the storyline; especially when things were starting to get a bit serious. The moment I started reading this book, I had a hard time putting it down. And now that I finished, I can't wait for the next book to be released so we can all find out what happens next!
I am huge fan or Michelle's work. They travel me in magical lands and honestly I dont think I will ever stop reading her books.
Petals and Portals is something magical, something new, something I never believed I could expect. Piper is going to change her life completely after her aunt Alice left her her flower shop in their little town. Now without her aunt around she must learn to navigate through her legacy but the flower shop is not what everyone things.
Tropes:

Great book it was magical, creative, and captivating. The book grabbed me right from chapter one I didn’t want to put it down. The story flowed nicely from one chapter to the next. I loved the world building that grew with the story. Loved all the different characters Piper, Owen, Tani and can’t forget the cat Willow. I can’t wait for the next instalment of what happens at the crossroads in the woods outside of Hickory Hollow.

This is a wonderful cozy magical read that draws you in and has you glued to the pages from start to finish. Piper hasn’t been home to Hickory Hollow in over a decade but life has dealt her a hand and now she is back, inheriting a house and a flower shop from her aunt who has passed. But as piper finds out that is not all she has inherited and she is now the Guardian of the Crossroads to stop monsters from coming through the portal! I do love visiting a small town and Hickory Hollow is full of mystery and intrigue and not to mention a super hot friend from the past! Twists and turns keep you guessing and I just love the world building, the banter and the chemistry! I look forward to more!
This was a game changer! I was hooked from the beginning. I felt at first that it almost jumped into everything too quickly, but then I realized I was in for the ride. I couldn't put this magical, enthralling and enchanting book down. Everything you could possibly imagine in the realms of magical fantasy is included in this brilliant story.
Michelle Miles is truly master at weaving the spellbound novel. She has gained a lifelong fan.
Super cute witchy/druid romance while trying to save the world. Mysteries and a sudden death come together in a small town setting where a Big City girl has had to return to her roots. Perfect for fans of The Notebook and Sweet Home Alabama who want a paranormal twist. I received an advanced copy for free and am leaving this review voluntarily.
What a wonderfully sweet and magical story. I really enjoyed Piper and Owen. I loved the world building and the description. It felt so warm and refreshing. I thought Piper coming home really made this story. I couldn’t imagine all of this taking place in the city lol. This was such a beautiful story and I loved the depth. I can’t wait to read what comes next.
What a wonderful first book. I loved Piper and Owen, I wish there was more about Alice but maybe there will be more in the next books to follow. Can not wait to see how Willow turns out, and hopefully find Oberon. It was fast paced and hard to put down.
I am happy I had the chance to read an ARC of this book. This book felt like a hot cup of tea on a chilly, rainy day. The plot was cozy, and filled with magic, secrets, mystery, and romance. I enjoyed both the story itself and it's characters.
I absolutely loved this book from start to finish. It was gripping and exciting. Loved the world build which grew and grew. The characters were fantastic you fall hard for them. I’m desperate for book two I’m absolutely hooked.
Piper is in an emotional roller-coaster. There is an air of mystery and it is delicious! Piper has her strength, will and patience tested. This first book definitely gets u longing for book 2.
Received as an ARC, I am leaving my honest review. This story was absolutely incredible. The plot grips you from the first chapter, not letting go until the nail biting, breathholding conclusion. An unexpected death turns Piper Wakefield’s life upside down. As she learns her Aunt’s background, mysteries beg to be answered. Seems she returned to her hometown just in time to save it, but uncovering how holds more questions than answers. After a childhood crush reunion, and danger in the air, she seeks answers. Some answers are cryptic, some as unexpected house guests, some as the town reveals its secrets. But when the truth is discovered she finds out who she really is, and how important her role will be. Join her for the unfolding magical awakening and the battle to keep evil from coming through the crossworlds, as romance builds and potions are brewed
I really enjoyed this book, it wasn't entirely what I was expecting when I went into it... it was more light hearted and small town romance than I was expecting. It was new to me and I quite liked it. I also thought the use of known characters from fairy tales genius! It meant we knew them without having to learn all that much about them.
My only complaint is that the end felt somewhat sprung upon me, I didn't feel like we wound down to the end of the book, it was a bit turn the page and theres no more. But that does leave me looking forward to the next one!!
I'm trying to think how I would categorise this book : Light hearted, small town, romantic fantasy. And overall a lovely easy read!
