Another why choose that could've been amazing but the author unfortunately completely ruined it by adding MM. Nothing in the bio or cover indicates there is MM, fucking foul to pretend it's all about her when it's not 🖕🖕🖕 Eric ruined the whole book.

Soft, slow build of the pack. Each with their own issues but mostly soft. More of a duo pairing finding a pack instead of just one woman. I liked Eric, the way he faced his father was cool. Hailey had the innocent vibe but also that silent strength that didn't make her a damsel. I'm surprised Otis lasted until the end. Felt sorry for Louis, he was all in at the start. The gargoyle felt mostly on the side lines. Fave character was Syke. Curious about Chet. Think I clued into the culprit when it mentioned messy feeding.

I enjoyed the book, which I usually do anytime Grace Mcginty is involved. However, I started the book thinking it was a RH, but there was definitely more of a poly romance going on. I don't mind that usually, but my expectations going in were different. I was excited for Otis' relationship with Hailey to develop, but we were given crumbs at the end. I just wish we had more focus on Hailey's relationships with the rest of the guys.

I really like this author, and I normally love her books, but this one was just a lot.
Every single person has a fight going on
It’s not one overarching fight. It is literally five separate fights.
There is not romance between any of the characters. It is literally just going to work having sex and now we are mated.
Then there’s a fact that it is so long and I’m not kidding nothing happened until maybe the 80% mark
And even that wasn’t anything
I just think it was too much
Every single person has a fight going on

Okay, I want to preface this by saying this is my first Grace McGinty book, but I'm a long time why choose reader and I have heard her name in the RH/poly genre for a LONG time as being a good author.
On that note though, what the fuck did I just read. This would probably be a 1* but I'm forcing myself to finish it.
I was REALLY holding out hope that McGinty had accidentally submitted the wrong draft to be published and that it would be fixed shortly, but a scroll of her social media suggests otherwise.
This book reads as if there wasn't a single BETA reader or ARC reader that could pull her aside and tell her these major issues that were being missed. We had a guy committing contortionist movements for his mating bite, we had Eric watching Eric do things (instead of Eric watching another MMC), we had tongues going into mouths full of food, we had a thought from one character carrying over to a thought of a different character in the next chapter... the list could go on.
There were a LOT of inconsistencies, things mentioned that were never brought up again, there's eight million plot points that are so minor I wasn't really interested in any of them, and while it's a fast burn standalone, a lot of these relationships don't even make SENSE. You don't feel any love between them, the MMC's are cut and paste from every other RH (grumpy, scary, controlled, golden retriever, rich) so I couldn't even remember their names bar one and ONLY because there was such a horrific scene in a lift that his name was scarred into my brain.
The writing in itself also feels rushed. It feels like there's never a single moment where we can just exist with the FMC and enjoy this supposed love we find her surrounded in. Even the smut scenes feel like they're a handful of sentences that have absolutely no emotion and passion in them. It felt like I was reading a bunch of people just enjoying sex, which is fine, good for them, but where is the love? Where is the passion? (Apart from wolfie's passion for her heart shaped ass)
I was also really excited that maybe there was some sort of relevance to Hailey being a stripper? But, no, it's just a "I'm SO lucky these men love me despite the fact I was a stripper!" Ew, purity culture.
There is no benefit to Hailey's past at all, she went through all these things through her childhood for... nothing to come of it? Literally nothing. There's no "Oh your parents were part of this organisation!" from the MMC's, they just instantly accept she's innocent so why even bother adding it? idk, it just felt like the author just wanted to add the trauma for the sake of it and not do anything with it.
There's also been no further mention of a sister again (I am ASSUMING she'll be the protag of book 2), but I'm currently only at 75% and I'm happy to come back and edit this review as I get there. I'm just so livid at this book I need to leave this review now.

The Trouble With Monsters: A Creature Crisis Hotline Novel — ⭐⭐/5 Stars
The dedication promised Lexie Winston energy. The execution delivered the Temu version.
Look, I finished it. I read the whole damn thing. I just didn’t enjoy it. 😂
The monster cast was ok, and I genuinely liked the concept. Moo-Man the minotaur had me especially excited… only for him to get basically ZERO page time or spicy time. Rude. 😭
But here’s the problem: I picked this up expecting Reverse Harem. It’s not. This is much more of a Why Choose/poly romance centered around Eric , and honestly? Eric feels like the FMC.
Hailey spends the entirety of the book getting injured while her supposedly powerful mates fail to protect her, meanwhile everyone is busy orbiting Eric and all his problems/Daddy issues. The emotional development, relationship building, and overall focus are so heavily centered on him that Hailey feels like a side character in her own romance.
The relationship dynamics were also rushed, messy, and confusing. Who is actually with whom? Who is attracted to whom? Who is just there? 🤷♀️ I never felt like the group dynamic properly came together at all.
And Eric? His romantic focus and chemistry felt overwhelmingly centered on the males, while his relationship with Hailey often felt secondary - almost like a lavender arrangement. And honestly, I’m all for that kind of dynamic when it’s intentional and done well. It can be hot AF. 😂 But here, it just didn’t work for me, especially because it felt like Hailey was pushed aside in her own romance.
I also wanted WAY more from Hailey’s family storyline, especially considering her past, but that was rushed too.
Ultimately, this was a serious case of wrong book, wrong expectations . I wanted an FMC-focused RH. What I got was an Eric-centric poly romance with Hailey occasionally wandering into the plot.
Fun premise. Basic-ass, seen-a-million-times monsters, but okay, I can work with that. 😂 Absolutely NOT the romance I signed up for.
And honestly, the marketing needs to be clearer. Reverse Harem and Why Choose/poly are NOT the same thing. If I’d known what this actually was going in, I probably would've enjoyed it more - like a Lexie Wintson novel.

The trouble with putting this book down 😁

The Trouble With Monsters was such an enjoyable and intriguing read, and I found myself completely drawn into the world Grace McGinty created. The concept behind the Creature Crisis Hotline was genuinely unique, and the supernatural world surrounding it had so much potential that I would absolutely love to read more stories set in this universe.
One of my favourite things about the book was Hailey. She was a fantastic FMC and, in my opinion, struck the perfect balance between vulnerability and strength. She isn’t physically powerful or invincible, and her very human weaknesses remain present throughout the story, but her strength of character, fierce inner light, instincts, and resilience make her incredibly compelling. Considering everything she has been through, I really admired the person she remained despite her hardships.
As for the MMCs, I was actually surprised by how much I liked Syke. Despite being presented as the more morally grey character, I found myself appreciating his actions and choices the most. 😏
The first half of the book felt particularly well-paced, and I was completely invested in the story and the characters. My main criticism would be that some of the later scenes felt a little rushed in comparison. Honestly, I think this story could easily have worked as a duology, allowing more time for certain events and developments to unfold.
Minor spoiler-related thoughts: I also kept waiting for some consequences—or at least more discussion surrounding Hailey killing the angel. Considering how much attention was given to Syke killing a human, I expected Hailey’s actions to have some kind of repercussions as well, especially given the angels’ attitude toward humans as supposedly lower beings. Even if her actions were completely understandable because she was protecting her mate, I still expected that situation to be addressed more.
Overall, though, this was a really enjoyable 4.5-star read with a fascinating premise, a fantastic heroine, memorable characters, and a world I definitely want to explore more. I would happily pick up another book set in this universe!

OMG I was absolutely riveted, I could not put this book down. A central couple and the creatures that fall for them. The slow growth, the devotion and green flag alphaness is absolutely swoonworthy.
Hailey contacts the Hotline as her neighbour has been missing and she's worried. The team Syke (demon), Louis (werewolf), Ilyas (gargoyle) all come out, led by Otis (minotaur) to investigate. What they undercover is a clan sick orc, Eric on the brink of death. But things aren't as simple. Eric accidently mate bonded to Hailey. Together they need to figure this out. However an attack brings everyone even closer. Syke blackhearted demon becomes soft and caring. Louis wants to feed them, cuddle them, he know they are his. Ilyas is being showponied for breeding and he is up for it but he does want Eric and Hailey. And Otis is stubborn as a bull he get there with a push. There are threats, unrest and conspiracy all mixed with the romance of these wonderful creatures.
This standalone had is all, from drama to action, even heartache. Grace McGinty definitely delivered a world I want to get lost in, when reality mixes perfectly with fantasy.

Grace McGinty is definitely my surprise author of the year! I discovered her this year, and I absolutely love her work. Her writing feels effortless; everything flows so beautifully, and the way she can jump between different genres without missing a beat is simply divine.
Grace is a STORYTELLER. She has this incredible ability to weave her magic and pull you straight into the world she’s creating, making you feel like you’re smack bang in the middle of the story.
I really wanted to be the FMC, Hailey, in this book. Her vulnerability, strength, love, shining light and determination make her the perfect person for her loves, and the job she finds herself in. They’re also exactly the kind of qualities you want in someone who has your back.
And then there are the MMCs… 🥵 They are extremely hot and absolutely worship the ground Hailey walks on. I don’t care if I’m asked to choose a favourite, I CAN’T! I love them all, and I love how each of them brings something different to the relationship. They fit together like pieces of a puzzle, each completing the picture in their own way.
This story is captivating from beginning to end. The spice doesn’t take a backseat to the story; instead, it elevates and enhances it, adding to the connection and intensity rather than overshadowing everything else.

August 22, 2026I absolutely loved this book! It was a lovely comfy monster romance and although I don’t believe I’ve read a proper monster romance book before, I really did enjoy this!
My fav (obviously) had to be ‘bad boy demon’ Skye with his damn shadows. I swear they make any guy 10x hotter. Closely followed by the rest of the men because I don’t think I could pick between them.
I loved the world building and learning how all the different creatures mated and courted. Learning about the clans and flights was equally as interesting even if half their families were dumpster trash.
Just like any of Graces books, there was amazing humor and sickening sweet love between the harem. Seeing them grow, be a family and finally all become one was actually adorable and I was so sad the book ended!
I gotta say the whole meadow thing was adorable and I did love that little storyline in between the big plot points!
Biggest thank you and appreciation to Grace for letting me read this, I cannot wait to see where the rest of these books go!

Grace McGinty rarely ever disappoints and she definitely doesn't with this quirky rom-com all about the hardships of creatures and humans now co-existing together.
The characters in this story are as diverse as you can get in a world now filled with many different species but what they all seem to have in common is their willingness to help others in need.
They're not the heroes anyone probably wanted but they're ones they got. They're big and scary! Yet all our delightful human FMC sees are males who are kind and protective.
And isn't Miss Swoon a ray of sunshine? No, really. She's this bright star all these creatures had no idea they were missing but were inevitably drawn to. They fought against prejudices amongst their own kind and humans to be together and it was so darn sweet I got a cavity!
This was a fun read though. The banter on point, the spice just nice and the character building appropriately paced for a standalone book in a continuing world I hope to see more of.

And isn't Miss Swoon a ray of sunshine? No, really. She's this bright star all these creatures had no idea they were missing but were inevitably drawn to. They fought against prejudices amongst their own kind and humans to be together and it was so darn sweet I got a cavity!
This was a fun read though. The banter on point, the spice just nice and the character building appropriately paced for a standalone book in a continuing world I hope to see more of.

Couldn’t put this down!
McGinty is a superb storyteller firing on all cylinders in this page turning RH tale. Top notch world building, perfect pacing, characters with depth, and personal and interpersonal growth.
If you like m/f, with m/m, RH stories that are multidimensional, not just a vehicle for smut, you will love this thrilling world. I plowed through this exciting, sweet, spicy, engaging story in two sittings. I almost wish I paced myself to savor it. It seems to be setting up at least one more book, which I cannot wait to read, but I would love to see more from this extremely fun world of whimsical and enthralling magic, sweet and powerful love, mating bonds, packs, group fun-time activities, strong found family connections, and at its center this book has heart.
I highly recommend this page turning addition to Grace McGinty ‘s already impressive catalog.

Great standalone
I love this author and I'm happy she released this standalone novel because I've been getting tired of long series with cliffhanger endings and waiting months or years for the next release. The Trouble with Monsters features Hailey, a sweet human woman with a difficult past, who ends up saving her "monster" neighbor and gains a new job working of a group of interesting creatures who can't help but fall for her. The story is told from multiple POVs and has a pretty good twist at the end (though I guessed the villain's identity a few chapters before the reveal). The happy ending was satisfying, but I hope McGinty builds on the world she's created with future books featuring other characters from this story, like the auditor who seems to affect a certain dragon a little too much...

You know those books where you can't quite put into words what you enjoyed so much about it but you just know you really enjoyed it and couldn't stop reading? That was this book for me. Maybe it was all the random reasons why each member of this why choose ended up mated (convenience, proximity, choice), maybe it was the beautiful ways it addressed the topic of found family and overcoming prejudice, maybe it was the steamy spice scenes with mm, maybe it was the way each character was so unique from the others in their personality. But maybe it was just a really sweet read that needs no explanation.

This was my first book by this author and it was a great introduction.
The story was sweet and the characters adorable (with each having their own personalities).
Instalove plays a major role in this book (which I personally am not a particular fan of) but that's not to say I didn't enjoy the book.
Admittedly, I did find that it was a little slow at times where nothing really REALLY happened until the 85% or so mark but definitely a good read if you're between books and you need something to break things up.

I enjoyed this story so much. In particular I loved the humour, the protectiveness of the MMC's and the pace of the story.
I loved how unapologetic Hailey was about her past jobs, her strength showed through all of her sunshine.
Having different monsters in the mix was great and there was a good balance between their own backgrounds, Hailey's past and the current storyline.
Thoroughly recommend adding this to your TBR list!

This is a fantastic Creature romance. Some spice, lots of love amongst the FMC & MMCs, and found family. The love and acceptance just for being themselves is something this group has been searching for their entire lives (and some of them have lived a very long time).
I stayed up all night to read and finish this book, so this should a sign that this standalone was not “put down able”.

I really enjoyed this book. It was sweet, with characters that I enjoyed. It is MM which it looks like some people didn’t like but I have no issue with that. As with other books by this author there is sex but it is a little mild, even for why choose. The cover makes it seem more on the racy side, with a tied up woman among monster but it never reaches a level of bdsm (which to me the cover kind of insinuates with the bound woman). The author focuses more on the plot, character development and their bonds. I overall enjoyed this book and look forward to the next one

The only reason I didn't finish this in one sitting is because my stupid real life got in the way.
This book was PERFECT. A cosy comfy Monster romance with a perfect good boy werewolf, a totally in control Minator, a stoic Gargoyle, a shadow daddy Demon and a smart pretty Orc who accidentally bonds with the human.
It was a beautiful story, so easy to read and an amazing, realistic world. 10/10 read, highly recommend!

FANTASTIC new world
Oh how I loved this book! I’ve been awaiting it since she first released that she was writing this book and I couldn’t be happier. Honestly this could be a Dead River situation and I couldn’t LIVE in this new world. I am so in love. Poly/ Monsters. Looking at the cover I assumed 2 partners but it is a full harem situation so that was a mega step pleasant surprise. The creatures and the political and social systems…give me more!!

Found monster family goodness
If Grace mcginty writes it I'm gonna devour it!!
And this was no exception it was sweet, funny in parts and the spice was soo hot! It was just an all round good time.
The found family troupe was so well done that I feel actually a part of the family now! I cannot wait to see what else is going to happen with the creature crisis hotline teams!!

This book is amazing! I loved the world building. The characters were not annoying. :-) 😀 Actually, all the creatures who formed a family were different but fit together like a puzzle. The spice was just enough and did not overwhelm the plot. Finally, there are no errors in the storyline and timeline. No typos! Just a joy to read. Can't wait for the next one, which is hopefully on Team Two!

I always go in reading Grace’s books knowing I’m going to get a great experience. This was no different. This was cozy with a side of tension and action. Hailey is a human who had a rough childhood, but she didn’t let that stop her. She’s a tough FMC and the guys she meets show her just how amazing she is. The characters Grace writes are always amazing and lovable in their own ways. Highly recommend reading this!!

I had been waiting WEEKS for this book to be released, and I LOVE it. I havent had many 5 star reads in 2026, but now Grace has claimed 2 of those spots!!
This wasnt an overly spicy book, I would say maybe a 2 chilli peppers, but the spice was well placed I believe.
Syke was my favourite. What can i say, i love a demon!

To say i am obsessed with The Trouble with Monsters is a massive understatement! The world building, the politics and the pacing of the relationships between each of the characters were perfection. If you are looking for a monster romance with a strong found family vibe, The Trouble with Monsters is for you!

Amazing
This skipped my tbr after seeing it advertised in a group. So, so worth it. I wasn't sure what I was in the mood for, but apparently it was this. It pulled me out of slump and stole my entire day. Amazing character, great plot that had my attention from the start, and toss in a decent handle full of monster spice... sold. Highly recommend giving this one a go.

new and strange— but I liked it
