Colby Ridgemore has never been asked a question he lacked an answer for. Tutoring sarcastic high schoolers, living with his perceptive older brother, and enduring daily debate from Declan Goldwin has set him up with enough quick-witted remarks for a lifetime. From philosophical discourse to relationship advice, Colby has an analytical answer for every inquiry.
Until, his therapist asks one that stops him in his tracks.
“What do you want?”
Four words Colby has never been asked, let alone considered. For nineteen years, life has been staying hidden in his brother’s shadow, surviving an unpalatable childhood, and keeping his drowning mental health somewhat afloat. ‘Want’ is something idealistic and unobtainable—certainly not something cut out for Ridgemores. But, as his brother moves out and moves on, Colby finds himself grappling with his new reality and all the unanswerable questions that entails. How does he want his life to go? What does he really want? And, maybe even, who does he want?
I loved spotlight and adored ace of hearts so I was so excited to read this. Colby had always been one of my favorite characters from both books, as was Declan. But this book was top tier. I read it in one sitting. I loved how small moments of each book melded together. Both characters had rough starts in different ways, and this story of them coming into the world against fears, self doubt and worries was really beautiful. Very much a coming of age story. Colby grew so much from when we first met him and his transformation was perfect. His heart was so big, though guarded, and he fought not to let Declan in. Declan is a character I doubt anyone couldn’t love, but we got to see so much of his real personality in this and it was wonderful. As an avid book reader, specifically MM and low spice, this was a 10/10
