These short stories centered around Cage and the other members of his law enforcement team are really working for me.
Criminal Investigator Cage Foster is called to an accident scene that looks suspiciously like the victim might have had some help getting killed. His fiancée, Dani, is close to term with a complicated pregnancy so he's stretched pretty thin.
This case was tragic because the victim was a teenager. The investigation proceeded rapidly as Cage has become adept at sifting through clues and using the resources around him. However, even he was caught off guard by a serious twist near the end. And, Dani's pregnancy comes to a close!
As with the other stories in the series, this one is skillfully crafted. The procedural is well done, the characterizations set up deftly and the mystery really interesting. I'm loving the experience of settling in to a story with characters I've come to like intensely, deducing the case and finishing in a couple of hours. And, it manages to address some serious social issues along the way. Well done.

Stacy Green. Cage Foster. If you haven’t read this author or her Delta Crossroads Trilogy, start there. Then move on to the Delta Detectives series. Yes, I know, she’s also written the fan-fricking-tabulous Lucy Kendall series, but that’s a whole ‘nother ball of wax – not to be missed.
What I’m trying to say, is that Last Words, the fourth installment in the Delta Detective collection, is a pretty fine novella. Even though I missed all the descriptions of the antebellum mansions, the gawd-awful heat, and the other details of her full-length novels set deep in Mississippi, I found that it is still possible to find immense pleasure in these short mysteries. Why? Because Stacy Green is a wonderful storyteller. Last Words is intense and tightly packed. Ms. Green portrays her characters as honestly and as realistically as possible without giving us everything all at once. The plot unfolds one piece at a time, albeit rather quickly, because the Kindle edition is barely 103 pages long.
Cage Foster’s rare evening at home with his pregnant girlfriend Dani is interrupted by an urgent call to rush to an accident scene. A teenage girl has run her dirt bike off the road and has been killed instantly when she crashed head first into a tree. Cage and first responders immediately suspect something else. The ensuing investigation requires judgment and sensitivity. Cage has both. He somehow manages to keep his mind on the case even though Dani, who has preeclampsia, is dangerously close to delivering the baby prematurely. And Dani, amazingly, recognizes that he has job responsibilities– I’m not sure too many women can be that understanding! Fortunately for the couple, their friend Jaymee is as solid as a rock once again.
Ms. Green has provided a tension-packed plot that kept me guessing. I love this series, and while I know that she also has other irons in the fire, I hope that she won’t forget about her friends in the delta!
Waiting for the birth of his daughter and with Daini's continued health issues, Cage is trying to spend as much time as he can at home but is called away on a case that makes him realize once again just how much of a responsibility it is to raise a child. Coming to the scene of what at first looks like an accident it becomes clear that the death of this young girl is anything but. Stacy once again weaves her magic with words and brings this characters to life as as he works to put the pieces together and bring justice for the young victim and balance his work and personal life.
I was so involved with this book this morning that I lost track of time and was almost late going to my daughter's. Can't wait to see what happens next. I just love Stacy's books especially the Cage Foster ones. So many twists and turns that keep you guessing all the way to the end of the book. A very hard book to put down because you just have to see what will happen next. I hope there will be more Cage Foster books. Looking forward to Savannah's trilogy.
Criminal Investigator Cage Foster has been trying to stay close to home to be with his girlfriend Dani who is expecting their first child. But he is unexpectedly called out to investigate an accident involving a teenager. Seventeen-year-old Sandy Brown was riding her dirtbike when she lost control and slammed head-first into a tree. At first it looks like a terrible accident, but Cage believes she may have been forced off the road.
This novella is part of the Delta Detectives series. I loved it. It actually feels like a full-length novel. I went back and forth between two suspects, changing my mind many times. Turns out I was wrong on both. My rating: 5 Stars.
I really enjoyed the suspense in this book. It kept me on edge the whole time I was reading this storyline. I felt the book was well written and once I started reading I couldn’t put it down. The storyline line was very interesting and kept me wishing for more.
Investigator Cage Foster is called to the scene of an accident involving a teenager. Sandy Brown is found dead, the victim of a dirt bike accident. Cage knows that the scene of a dead child is always difficult to examine, but it is especially harder for him this time because he is awaiting the arrival of his newborn daughter. He cannot help but think how he would feel if it was his daughter. When, after gathering clues and examining the scene, he realizes that this is more than a tragic accident. It looks like it is a deliberate hit and run. Who would want to see the teenager dead?
As Cage begins his investigation he realizes that the answer to that question is more people than he could have ever imagined. Sandy’s family life is not picture perfect and he cannot rule out either of her parents. She has recently been fired from her job and he does not know if the reason for the firing could also be a motive for murder. She also has a secret that only a few people know about, could this secret have led to her death?
The mystery is carried out throughout the whole book and the suspense just continues to build. There are many twists and turns and at times I felt like I was on a rollercoaster. Just when I thought I had it figured out, the author turned my theory upside down. I really like when that happens and I enjoy being surprised.
The writing style flows smoothly and the book is an easy quick read. The characters are well developed and realistic. I thought that Cage was a very competent and thorough investigator and I would like him to be involved if I ever had a need for investigating. He also was very considerate of the people involved in the investigation and tried to handle things as delicately as possible. A lot of the time the police and investigators are presented in a way that make them seem mean, cruel or incompetent. It was refreshing to see them presented in a more positive light.
Although this book is short, less than one hundred pages, I feel that it is a complete book. The mystery is well plotted and developed and I did not feel like anything is incomplete. I would have liked to learn more about Cage and his wife and spend more time with them as a family but I am hoping that I can learn more about them in the books written prior to this one, which I definitely plan on reading. I would recommend this book to anyone who enjoys reading a well crafted mystery suspense.
*OBS would like to thank the author for supplying a free copy of this title in exchange for an honest review*
This is the final novella in the Cage Foster series. It is a very short read at 98 pages, but we get to see more of the Investigator's personal side.
Although this is supposedly the last in the series, I certainly hope he is revived at a later date. He is the type of character I would want investigating my situation if I were murdered or harmed.
Green writes great characters, twisted and deviant crimes and is a great storyteller. Her writing is easily read, satisfying and a bit disturbing. I would encourage anyone who loves mystery/suspense to read her books!
As Cage and Dani are waiting for the birth of their baby, Cage is called away to the scene of a tragic death of a teenage girl. Did she accidentally lose control or did someone hit her? As Cage digs into the story further to find out the truth, who will he find as his lead suspect?
I hope Ms. Green will continue with the Delta Detectives Series. They are an easy read, but full of twists and turns that keep the reader interested in the books.
In Last Words a high school girl has an accident on her dirt bike. When Investigator Cage Foster is called to the scene, he and another cop determine that this is no accident. Being a teenager is not the easiest life but who would want to kill Sandy Brown? And why? This story is full of emotion, teen age angst and more. Keep them coming Stacy Green.
