God’s chosen king… and the druid sent to undo him.
In the kingdom of Cúil Cullach, rulers are chosen by prophecy, not blood. A tradition thrown into chaos when, on the night of the king’s coronation, the Oracle names a queen.
Cerys, a reclusive male druid with a dangerous gift, is forced to wed the newly crowned and wildly immature Skyre, sparking a collision between a dying belief in the old gods and the rising institutional power of the Sun Faith. But as political and personal tensions simmer, Cerys’ dreams begin to bleed with memory and omens. Can he and Skyre work through their differences to unite a fracturing kingdom against an ancient foe?
Absolutely amazing! I dove into this book easily and I found myself thinking about it when I was unable to read and I would rush to pick it up As soon as I possibly could. The characters, the world, the slow burn was everything I could have hoped for. The author did a phenomenal job of explaining this new world perfectly without feeling like I was buried in new facts. There were never any “what is happening” moments that I felt like I missed something being the reason I didn’t know. These two MC’s were created perfectly and I hung on every bit of info the author gave me about them. Towards the end, I found myself hoping and praying there would be more after this book because I simply didn’t want to say goodbye to the world just yet. It truly was an epic read and if GR would allow it I would make it 6 stars. I can not wait for more. Well done! *standing ovation*
I had the privilege of ARC reading this masterpiece! This is Danmei meets epic fantasy and I am SO here for it. Phenomenal world building/History development that captures the attention rather than bores. The history is captivating, leaving the reader with questions and a burning need to know MORE. It took me a bit to love Skyre, but that made it better! This did everything a true enemies to lovers trope should do. The reader’s view of Skyre changes along with the Druid’s. Perfection! I absolutely cannot WAIT for more! So well done!
I received an ARC of this book in exchange for an honest review.
I went into this mostly blind after randomly stumbling upon the author on TikTok. Do note that this is the first book in what I assume will be a series and not a standalone! Going into it with that knowledge will make for a better read, trust me.
What an interesting and fresh take on fantasy! I greatly enjoyed the unique world building. There is a glossary in the back for those who need it, but I felt most unfamiliar words and phrases could be understood in context. It is nice to have for some of the longer, untranslated bits of dialogue, and extensive enough that readers who feel a little more lost will have a better time understanding.
The plotline does take a hot minute to pick up, but knowing that the story does not end with this book makes it less of an issue. That being said, it does end on a cliffhanger that leaves you wanting more. (seriously, things were JUST getting exciting!)
My critiques are mostly minor and personal preference — most notably the use of descriptors that make some of the writing feel more flowery and a bit more cliche than necessary. It wasn't enough to throw me off, but enough to be notable.
For a debut indie novel, this is better than some traditionally published books I've read. There's a unique language structure, an interesting world, and a plotline where I'm actually interested to see where it goes (damn you cliffhanger!). The characters have only started feeling more complex, so I'm excited to see how they grow moving forward.
I would heavily encourage the author to keep writing! The concepts are solid, and I'd love to read more!
Honestly, everything about Chosen of the Moon is a work of art. The writing is beautiful, the pacing is perfect, the characters full of depth, the yearning delicious, and the darker elements are all handled with care and respect (do ofc read the warnings listed at the start of the book!).
The world is a beautifully rich fantasy setting, drawing inspiration primarily from Celtic cultures. From the very beginning, it's easy to recognise Kerrigan has a deep love for them, as well as for her own world she's created. There's a respectful appreciation that shines through at every turn, and in the use of Celtic-inspired language, all telling me a great deal of care and research went into making it feel genuine and lived-in, while still managing to make the world of Cúil Cullach her own. And never in a "big lore dump of exposition" way. All information comes as needed, each new piece revealed naturally, so that I never felt overwhelmed, nor did I ever feel lost. Not an easy feat when introducing a new fantasy setting!
And the characters! I'm not exaggerating when I say Cerys might be one of my favourite POV characters *ever*. I love his inner voice as well as his absolutely savage wit. Every time he bests Skyre with nothing more than a single line of dialogue, or even by saying nothing at all, I'm giggling like a loon. He's a perfect mirror to everything we see of The An'Atherin and their way of life, as well as to Skyre himself. Whilst Skyre, as I'm sure was intended, raised my hackles but grew on me as he grew through the story. Starting as a spoilt, sheltered and arrogant manchild with no real experience other than the knowledge he is destined to be great, he is written perfectly in that. Even then, Kerrigan weaves little glimpses into his insecurity, the depth underneath all his blustering bravado, and I strapped myself in for what I knew was going to be a bumpy ride for his ego! And I can safely say I was not disappointed, because what a ride and reality check it is for our thin-skinned Vaich! And what a delightfully torturous slow burn he (and we) must endure! Still, I am surprised at just how *much* he grew on me. Little Cerys may still hold my heart, but I never expected Skyre to come quite so close.
What I also didn't expect was how I would come to feel about many side characters. There are characters I utterly despised only to empathise with them much later, and some I immediately loved later became infuriating. To be clear, I mean this as a compliment, as Kerrigan's writing spares no character from flaws, and they are consistent and realistic. They do not bend simply to make the story easier for our protagonists if it is not in their character to do so. Each has their own motivations and core values, and there was never a character I thought acted in a way that didn't make sense, even if I wanted to smack them about the head. They become allies or thorns or foes in ways that are always realistic to them, and even when I don't like them, I *understand* them and their motivations. Even when I'm shouting "why are you doing this?!?!" at them, I know why. And I love that, I love knowing they are their own entities, and not just window dressing or fan service or to be our protagonists' yes-people. They're living in this world as much as the protagonists, and they each add to the fabric of the story's tapestry.
All to say, I've never been so mad finishing a book before. Like, what do you mean I'm *done*? What am I supposed to do now?? Go about my life, be normal, like I'm not still thinking about *them*?? I need you all to go pick this book up right now, because I *need* the sequel like I need air.
Chosen of The Moon is one of the most gorgeously crafted books that I've read in a while. Based in an ancient Celtic world burning in the wake of sun and moon religious sects; this novel is a beautiful, mythical, and thoroughly epic fantasy.
The first MC, Cerys (my favourite), brings a refreshing wit which *genuinely* had me laughing out loud many times throughout the story! He's very easy to fall in love with, and so delicate that I just wanted to coddle him in wool. Yet he firmly holds his own in a way that is unexpected; empathetic, dignified, and observant to a razor-sharp degree.
The second MC, Skyre, surprised me - because I honestly wanted to kick his immature, arrogant, hot-headed booty at the beginning - but as he stumbled through the realities of a highly politicised coronation, I began to love him, just like Cerys. The tension between the two is stretched to breaking point in various ways through the story. It's *such* an enjoyable contrast, and I never found myself bored of them. I will say that I generally don't read in romance or high fantasy genres, but this is not a one dimensional story - to me, Chosen of the Moon is a fascinating meditation on religion, nature, and familial bonds - tied together by a visceral, yearning, slow burn romance.
And should I say: this is a slowwwwww slow burn!
With the same care as given the MCs, Kerrigan also does an impressive job at building the key cast of characters that each have agency, complex feelings, and private worlds; not one feels like a cardboard cutout, and even when some are being *infuriating* to hell, I could feel where their rage was coming from, and respect them for it. That being said, I will always hate you, Othrik and Liaeg.
The lyrical, oft ethereal style of Kerrigan's writing was a true delight to read. She never ventures too far into excessive description; rather, she doesn't shy away from the bloodiness (at times, horror) of the ancient world, and the result is a masterful tension of mythical beauty and very human pain.
I admittedly had trouble figuring out the language at first, but ultimately it is a crucial thread to the rich tapestry of Cuil Cullach. Lore and memories are given at just the right emotional beats of the present day story. Every word feels intentional - you can tell that despite this being her debut published novel, Kerrigan is a writer who deeply understands and cares for her craft. A more thoughtful, researched work than a significant portion of popular books I've attempted to read as of late.
By the last third of the book, I was sprinting through the pages. Pitch perfect pacing and the novel ends burning with emotion. Incredibly excited for the continuation of Cerys and Skyre's story. Thank you to the author for the opportunity to read!
Listen, if I have a great time reading and a story somehow dodges all of my bookish pet peeves, I give the book 5 stars. This one definitely fits right into that group for me and I’m thrilled.
Let me start this review off with a warning - this novel is a sloowwwwww burn. Our two MMCs are very much not friends for a long time, and I think that, for readers who are into insta-love-everything-is-great stories, you need to be aware of what you’re walking into. Don’t go into this book looking for an easy-fix, fast developing enemies to lovers tryst. You will not find it (at least, not yet). This one has depth to it, so if that’s what you’re searching for, look no further!
That being said - WOW! I absolutely loved this book. What a wild ride, man. The world building is interesting, fun, and definitely different from anything I’ve read before. The tone is fantastical and unique, and the characters are perfectly imperfect. The way different religious influences are used to fuel each character’s responses and motivations is genius. I never truly knew at any moment what would happen next, and that made the book hard to put down.
I am always happy to see a slower pace in a high fantasy story because it allows me to really delve into the meat and bones of the setting, and this book delivered. I loved the descriptions of the various locations and the feelings these places inspired in the characters. I also really enjoyed getting to know Skyre and Cerys in detail while simultaneously watching them learn how to exist within each other’s orbits.
I cannot say how happy I am that this author lets these characters struggle to understand each other!! As they should! The fact that Skyre and Cerys so easily and clearly maintain their individuality throughout the story thrills me. They have so much in common and yet they have no idea, because they have to learn to communicate with each other through their vast differences. Yes!! The realism in the struggle to build a relationship with someone so very different in such a strange, political climate? Amazing. And watching their bond slowly snap into place? (*Chef’s kiss*) Perfection.
I cannot wait to read more of this story. I’m hooked on this budding relationship and dying to see how Skyre and Cerys will work together to both save their people and each other. The tension that is growing between those two and also between Skyre and his role within his kingdom… you don’t understand, I need more!!
Thank you to Lynn Kerrigan for ARC access to this story. It has been an incredible journey and I so look forward to what you do next! Until next time ~
Chosen of the Moon by Lynn Kerrigan is a romantic MM epic fantasy that follows our MC, a femboy druid named Creys, and the king Sykre, son of the sun. This is an amazing story full of so much mystery, tension, and yearning. This is not the typical dark MM romance; however, there are still dark elements to this story, so make sure to check them out. Ahh, I just absolutely adore everything about this book. This work kept me up and put me in a chokehold; I just couldn't put it down. I loved both the MCs so much, I'm going to miss them so much. I literally can not wait till the next book!!!!
I don't know if I have ever read a book with an MC quite like Creys before, but boy am I happy I have now. He was everything I love in an MC, smart, strong-willed, silver-tongued, yet still soft in many ways that gave him so many complexities and ways to relate to him. Skyre, on the other hand, is the kind of person you kinda hate to love in the beginning, which was the point, I'm pretty sure. He was very immature, but it wasn't really his fault. I won't go too much into it, but if you read it, you'll understand. Anyway, it was so rewarding seeing how much he grew throughout the story. Tbh, all the other characters really infuriated me, except for Medhin. I kinda started to like her near the end. Either way, that didn't make this any less of a masterpiece!!!
The pacing was just perfect, the author really delivered on that slow burn, and I am so here for it. The yearning from both of them, but specifically Skyre, had me literally kicking my feet; it was just so good. Don't get me started on the prose; it was so beautifully written, and you could tell a lot of time went into researching and knowing what type of writing would fix their world and make it really come to life. The plot was super interesting. There was so much mystery, and the court politics were very entertaining to read.
If you love fantasy with elements of romance, and so so so much yearning, then you NEED to pick this up!!! Thank you so much for the ARC and the opportunity to read this beautiful and whimsical story. I will be waiting super impatiently for book two!
I feel so lucky that I got to be an advanced reader for Chosen of the Moon ❤️ This book was SO GOOD and I'm obsessed with it!!
Full disclosure this book is very very slow burn, but the good kind!! The kind where you’re screaming internally the whole time because the tension is just building and building and you KNOW it’s going to pay off.
The two main characters start off so disconnected and frustrated with each other, but as the book goes on, we watch them slowly learn how to understand one another and start literally YEARNING for one another. The emotional tension? I was eating it up. This love is messy, complicated, and feels so real. You really feel how different they are and how hard it is for them to bridge that gap, which just makes every small moment between them hit ten times harder.
The worldbuilding is also so cool. It’s got this rich, almost mystical vibe with religion, prophecy, and political tension woven in, and it honestly feels really unique. It took me a little bit to get used to some of the language and how the characters were referring to one another but there's a really great guide in the back that helped me tremendously. And honestly once I started seeing certain words get repeated in conversations I got the hang of it pretty fast! It was honestly really refreshing and fun!
The writing is so well done. You can tell a lot of care went into making everything feel vivid and emotional. I was fully immersed. This is definitely more fantasy with romantic elements rather than straight romance (so far), but this is definitely top tier slow burn suffering and I loved it!
By the end I was just sitting there like… I NEED BOOK TWO IMMEDIATELY!!
Y'all should definitely pick this up when it comes out! You won't regret it!
Romance and M/M aren’t typically my go-to genres, so I don’t have a ton to compare in that space, but I do love fantasy, and this novel absolutely delivers there. With that said, I think even given the genre, this book is accessible to those who do not read a lot of M/M romance either because there's so much more going on than just that.
The worldbuilding is beautiful. From the richly described settings to the original language, songs, monsters, and folklore woven throughout, the story feels immersive and mythological. I especially loved the tension between old and new religions and how that conflict shapes the relationships between neighboring factions and characters.
The Scotland-inspired setting with strong Pagan undertones was a standout for me. It added a really atmospheric, mythic quality to the story, and it made everything so much more tangible in my mind.
I also really enjoyed some of the character dynamics throughout. There were moments that genuinely made me laugh—like Cerys calling Skyre simple, or Greyv giving Skyre a hard time for picking flowers like he’d completely lost his mind. Hiri was a standout character for me as well.
I see others have mentioned the romance is a slow burn but I think there’s quite a bit of buildup for the whole story. It felt like things really started picking up about half way in, and then from there you will not be able to put this book down.
I saw the author said in her acknowledgements this is her sacrificial lamb and I say hogshit to that! Because this is an absolutely beautiful tale and anyone can tell so much care and heart and soul (and I imagine quite a few tears) have gone into this. What an incredible debut work of art.
I absolutely fell in love with book and the 2 MM characters, well the first mm character first lol.
Lynn has such a perfect imagination, I have no idea how she managed to write such a beautiful romance.
The MM characters are a druid called Cerys and a king called Skyre.
Due to prophecies and religion of the God's/Druids the 2 were to marry to join the Moon (Cerys) and the sun (Skyre). It was thought that the king would marry a woman but was not to be. Cerys was regularly seen as a female due to his perfect face, mannerisms and his quiet nature (he's such a dote and I love him lol).
Skyre is a warrior King and he wasn't impressed with the druid, he constantly berrated him and mocked him, yeah...he made me so pi$$Ed off😡. He is so set in his ways and this story really describes his ways and his beliefs. (I came to love him by the end of the book🤣).
This story is set in beautiful landscapes and the author described every single thing/thought in such detail.
Can't really say much else without spoilers and I'm not doing that, I want people to get sucked in as deep as I did and binge read it!
Please give this beautiful soul of an author a go and read this book whens it's released.
I loved loved loved this book😍😍😍
Thankyou Lynn for giving me the opportunity to become an ARC for your fantastic first debut book, the world/character/description building blew my fluffy socks off and I'm not joking.....either a support or therapy group would very much be appreciated🤣🤣🥹🥹🥹.
I would say that Chosen of the Moon by Lynn Kerrigan is a high fantasy MM novel that blends political intrigue, prophecy, and slow-burn character dynamics. The worldbuilding is very Celtic / Nordic-inspired, so fans of Outlander or Vikings would love this book.
The main two characters of the novel are Cerys and Skyre, who I came to love while reading. Although the novel is a fantasy, there is an element of romance that bubbles as a slow-burn but definitely had me rooting for them.
I absolutely loved the plot of the novel. It was incredibly creative, and I found myself constantly surprised, never quite knowing what would happen next. You could tell that Lynn Kerrigan put allot of thought into it and it drives the novel so well. The story does an amazing job of making you both love and hate the characters with a fierce intensity, which kept me completely engaged from start to finish. By the end, I was bursting with enthusiasm for the next book, and I was so eager to see how everything would unfold that I binge-read the second half of the book in one day.
This book is definitely a must-read for any fantasy reader.
I’ve read the book and it absolutely blew me away. The premise of rulers being chosen by a prophecy and all of the intricate plots and sub-plots that are brought to the reader are incredibly interesting and draw you in.
One of the most important things to me when I read are the descriptions of the scenes and environments, how well the author can bring a scene to life so that I can imagine myself there in that moment. The author of this book does an amazing job of bringing the book to life with interesting environments and ambient descriptions.
Both the main and side characters are unique and they make you want to find out more about them, what their thoughts and motives are, what makes them tick. Throught the book you can see their development and it’s satisfying to see them evolve and change. I love the fact that the characters were brought to life in a way that I can relate to them, their thoughts, motives and behavior.
The book and story are amazing and I’ve enjoyed every single page I’ve read.
Wow! I’m so impressed by this debut fantasy romance—I genuinely wouldn’t have guessed it was a debut from the strength of the writing. The world feels fully realized, and the characters are just as well-developed, which made it easy to sink into from the start.
This isn’t a traditional romantasy, though—the burn is very, very, VERY slow. Personally, I enjoy that. Letting the relationship unfold gradually made it feel more organic and grounded. Just know going in that there isn’t a ton of overt romance in book one.
It also hits several of my favorite tropes without ever feeling like the story was built around them, which I really appreciated.
Read if you enjoy: -Slow burn -Flawed characters -“Who did this to you?” -Caretaking -Forced proximity -Arranged marriage -Opposites attract
And the feminine male druid being referred to as “wife” or “queen” absolutely never got old for me.
I couldn’t put this down from start to finish and am already antsy to get my hands on book two!
I did not know what to expect as this was the first ARC I’d ever received but I was enthralled from beginning to end. The writing was so intriguing and meticulous and beautiful (I’ll admit it took me a minute to get used to the language but after a couple chapters it was no problem, the glossary was super helpful). I especially loved the banter and dialogue. It was often super fun and I was cackling. I was so invested in the dynamic of the two main characters, definitely the kind of slow burn I’m looking for. I was constantly left aching. I personally love an arranged prophecy marriage. It was pretty fast paced while still letting the characters breathe and engage. The two MMCs were easy to fall in love with. I was always on edge and needing to know what was going to happen next. Speaking of which, I’m going to need the next book immediately! Really looking forward to the rest of the series.
If you like high fantasy, I’d definitely say give this one a go - it might end up being one of your best reads this year! It feels really fresh, with a unique world and just enough lore to keep things interesting without getting too complicated where you are struggling to follow. The main characters really grew on me as I kept reading, and even the side characters added a lot to the story. Though, be prepared for some really unlikable ones that you just want to slap so hard hahaha!
It is a bit of a slow burn at first, but once the story picks up, it’s so hard to put the book down. There are so many revelations and interesting sub-plots - I got completely hooked and this ended up being one of my fastest reads in years as I prioritised it above many other things!
It does end on a pretty big cliffhanger though, which has me very ready for the next book. Lynn, congratulations - your book was better than a lot of books I see in major bookstores, and I can't wao for the next one♥️
I loved every minute of this beautifully written epic fantasy! The story centers around a kingdom that has both sun and moon priests and priestesses. The sun chooses the next king, and the opening scene is the new king being crowned. During their coronation ritual, the Moon priestess has a vision of someone else meant to rule named Cerys. They travel to find this person, who they think will be their next queen, only to find out that this person is actually a Druid man. They take him anyway, and he’s forced into a marriage with the king. The main characters gave off heavy dwarf and elf vibes from LOTR, but make it pagan and gay. Cerys is my favorite, but I’m excited to see Skyre’s character growth. Check content warnings! There are heavy topics.
I'll be honest, I'm not a fantasy girlie however! I am a forced marriage trope girlie. So when I found this book; I thought "why not" give it a try.
As per expected a good 30% of the book had me dragging my feet because fantasy lends itself to a lot of world-building. And you can tell the author put so much care and thought into the world and political dynamics. However, I was here for the 2 MLs to fall in and banter.
And I'd say about that 30% mark is when we get that! And it comes in full-force. Had me kicking and giggling every step of the way. With the moment of our king recognizing he cares for his queen to our queen realizing he doesn't have to keep running. There will be someone by his side.
THE CLIFFHANGER OF AN ENDING THO!!! WHY DO THIS TO ME!?!?
I have had the great honour and luck of being one of the beta readers for this, and I can easily say this is a book you should read if you like a world that you can sense and feel from the words on the screen/book!
If you are anything like me, you will find characters you love, some you hate, several you just simply want to yeet out a window, those you just do not how to place and then slowly, slooowly the truths get revealed to you. (Sometimes in my brain to slowly because I want to know already, but hey, that is part of the fun.)
It touches on so many things, and you have so many questions along the way that it keeps your interrest and the want for more.
Thank you to the author for the ARC read for Chosen of the Moon. If you're looking for an epic fantasy that mixes detailed world building, epic adventure and MM characters then you need to add this to your TBR. I enjoyed this take on an epic fantasy. It had themes in it that I haven't read in other books. This story doesn't choose a new ruler based on bloodlines but by those who have been chosen by fates. It also includes pagan aspects and spooky occult vibes. This book is low on the spice but has plenty of tension. It built up to a big cliffhanger for future books.
The world building in this is crazy good! It’s clear the author knows and loves this world, and the challenges the characters face feel real as their slow burn romance. Their exchanges are so clever and witty; so many gems! The setup is unique and brilliant and the Druid is irresistible. If this doesn’t make you take off your shoes to touch grass well then you’re not me barefoot in the park with a terrible fake accent rn lolol. So well done, excited for the next one!
Once I started, I couldn't stop reading. The world the author has created is a masterpiece and each character is memorable. Between Cerys' wit and Skyre's whole vibe, there is never a dull moment. Even the less favorable characters (Jor) will leave an impression.
I can't recommend this book or author enough and can't wait to see what comes next in the story.
The is an amazing story! I feel in love with the characters and the world they live in. I enjoyed seeing the characters grow personally and closer together as the story progressed. Would highly recommend ❤️
Epic MM fantasy with Enemies to Lovers, Forced Marriage, slow emotional burn/fast sexual burn, and more than enough political and theological intrigue to keep you guessing. Highly recommend. Can't wait for the sequel..
I fear I fairly stalked this poor author on socials for months in the hopes of getting my unworthy little hands on this book, and I hope she can forgive me, but I have no regrets because it absolutely lived up to my every expectation. This is probably the best book I'll read all year.
First of all, the prose is stellar. Utterly sublime lyrical prose that draws you into the world with every line, and yet every one feels meaningful and necessary. Nothing is done without intent.
The worldbuilding is spectacular. There are no tedious infodumps; every feature of this world and the story is revealed organically, creating a fully realized and immersive world that draws you in completely. I've rarely come across such stunning atmospheric writing.
Cerys is such a compelling character, and his quiet, calculated nature juxtaposed against Skyre's youthful arrogance and hotheadedness was so delicious. I loved watching them gravitate towards one another in spite of themselves. Such a perfect dynamic, and the slow burn was so well done. *chef's kiss*
I could go on, of course, but in the interest of brevity, let me just say that this book is a masterpiece, and I simply cannot recommend it enough.
I had the absolute fortune to beta read this work. It’s an amazing read with a very very hot king 🥰… I mean seriously for that only it’s worth it, but the prose is absolutely gorgeous too, like being on mushrooms in a planetarium. The fantasy parts and the world hold together well with a healthy dose of Nordic and Celtic mythology. The style reminded me of Tolkien a bit. I loved the eerie atmosphere the author created and the subtle critiques of organized religion vs animism.
