Alexander Söderberg has worked as a television screenwriter and lives in the countryside in the south of Sweden with his wife and children. The Andalucian Friend is his first novel.
I just couldn't get into this book. It was slow and the characters were boring. Took forever to understand the characters and their purpose. Maybe if I had read the first book I would be more invested in the book and characters. For a first time reader, I just didn't like it.
O.K., i really wanted to like this. I won it in a giveaway, and was so excited. Had enjoyed the first one of the trilogy, The Andulisian Friend, thought the problems with it were because it was a first novel. (I think it was a first novel) At any rate, it had good suspense and was somewhat of a page turner. This was really disappointing. Every single one of the main characters, and there are many, either get shot, drowned, knifed, beat up severely, or anything else you can think of that is life threatening. And, they all ALMOST die from the injuries, but manage to survive. Two of them, as a matter of fact, do die, but come back to life. (I am not joking) The group is always on the run, and everywhere they go, like to different countries, someone of them either has a house left to them by a grandparent, or knows a diplomat in the city, or has some acquaintance that is mysteriously able to provide them with whatever they need at that moment. The characters change sides all the time, with either one bad guy or another, because they are forced to or circumstances require it. It was difficult to keep it all straight, and then i realized, it didn't matter and i didn't really care! So sorry this wasn't better, it had potential.
A thrilling, fast paced story that you won't be able to put down.
When several international criminal gangs vie for each others' territory and businesses things are bound to get messy. Innocent and not so innocent people get caught up in the action. Sophie Brinkman is no exception. She's been the nurse of Hector Guzman and later ended up in a relationship with him, until he's almost killed. By then its too late for her to escape the organization and she's forced to take on a bigger role in the “family business”. She knows to much to be allowed to walk out. With two other rival organizations out to take over the Guzman's interests, she is needed more than ever by Hector's confidants who are trying desperately to keep things together. Everyone wants something from Sophie. Is she in over her head? Only time will tell whether she will succeed.
What unfolds in The Other Son, is a fascinating tale of intrigue, betrayal and action across numerous countries in an atmosphere of treachery that sucks in everyone, good or bad, in its path. Söderberg, is clearly an author to watch. Readers of the late Henning Mankell and Stieg Larsson will not want to miss this book. It's well written, well organized into fairly short chapters that take the readers into every corner of the various criminal gangs and into the police which is supposed to contain criminal elements. Sometimes its hard to tell the two apart.
While this is part of a trilogy which began with The Andalusian Friend, it can be read as a stand alone. However, now that I've read this one I definitely want to go back to the first book, which I missed and of course I'll be waiting for the next installment. If this one was anything to go by, I can't wait to read it.
Thanks to blogging for books for allowing me to read this book in exchange for an honest review.
The Other Son was an interesting suspenseful read.
To begin with, read the first book. I read this book being totally confused and having no idea what was going on in the past. It is definitely not a book you can read without reading the rest of the series.
Now for the dirt:
This book is very exciting, if you know what is going on with the story. The chapters filter through the different characters and their different dramatic situations. Eventually all the stories connect and everything that happens within the novel makes sense.
I do feel like this book was a little to long. It felt like it dragged on and on and I got bored several times. I had to put this book down for weeks before I could pick it back up, but that is simply because the author writes in a way that doesn't connect to me personally. The story wasn't super fast (which is what I like in a book) so it was hard for me to read. It is still a great book though!
There is enough action and mystery to keep readers who like those types of novel happy. It is definitely a book I'd suggest to readers who like thrillers.
Overall - I found the book was to long, some of the parts could have been removed and the story would have worked just as well. I also felt like the author could have made the book work as a stand alone in case people picked it up, but instead I was mega confused.
Three out of five stars.
I received this book for free through Goodreads First Reads.
The Other Son, by Alexander Söderberg, picks up a few months after the series debut, The Andalucian Friend, ends. Sophie Brinkmann, a Swedish nurse, seems to have adjusted to her life as the face of a criminal organization headed by her boyfriend, Hector Guzman. She travels the globe, reassuring partners and suppliers and buyers, while Hector languishes in a coma. Hector’s absence is beginning to be felt, however. We rejoin Sophie in a meeting in Istanbul. The man she’s meeting with is giving her strange vibes. The meeting suddenly becomes an assassination attempt and Sophie barely escapes with her life. The Other Son kicks off with a bang and doesn’t let up until the last page...

Wow, is it Sweden's climate that produces authors with such a dark view? Henning Mankell and Stieg Larsson now have another competitor when it comes to writing about characters that literally seem to jump off the page. We have Spanish criminals, Russian mobsters and police who are either good, corrupt or a shade of gray somewhere in between. Nurse Sophie Brinkmann is caught like one of Robert Ludlums' "every man or every woman" in a web of intrigue and double-cross. Differentiating allies from enemies is critical to survival and will keep you turning the pages as characters chase across two continents and the survivors end up in a city of light. This book is a WINNER that will keep you engrossed and engaged to the end. As a winner of a first reads giveaway of this book from goodreads, I've scored another great story. Believe me, this story is worth the read!
I received this book free from LibraryThing.com I enjoyed reading this book. It is book 2 in a trilogy. The plot elements from book 1 were explained well enough that I could read it without being confused. There are some plot lines left unresolved at the end of the book, presumably for book3. The plot in this thriller concerns the rivalry between two criminal gangs in Europe, 1 in Sweden, and 1 in Germany with a third gang in Colombia, alternately cooperating with either of the two, for its own ends. Sophie Brinkmann is a nurse who gave up her nursing job to work for the Swedish gang after falling in love with its head, Hector Guzman. The translation was very good.
I received this book in a Goodreads giveaway and I'm so glad I did!! This is a book that you want to read completely uninterrupted so you can find out exactly what's going to happen - you definitely don't want to put it down!! I was glad I had read the first book of the series first - which was a little better than the second - but you certainly don't have to as enough background is provided to keep you in the loop. I can't wait to read the third book - I have to find out what happens!!
For the fans of international crime and intrigue. I think they will enjoy this book. The focus of this novel is the dual kidnappings of two young men who have fallen into the hands of rival groups. There is a lot of violence and movement to multiple geographic locations across the world. The book is well written and amazingly clear considering the plots complexities. I think the book is worth reading for the somewhat narrow audience it is intended to reach.
A Read-It-Forward Giveaway – Thank You! After reading this book, I found that this is part two of a trilogy. Therefore, it is not a book that can be read on its own. There are too many characters and it’s difficult to understand who is who without reading the prior book. I had difficulty keeping up with the action and lost interest several times.
International organized crime, drug smuggling, weapons running, corrupt cops, and a single-mother just wanting her life back to normal create a hard-to-put-down thriller. But, this is part two of a trilogy and not a book to be read as a stand alone, unless you are into confusion.
This is the second book in the trilogy by Alexander Söderberg. It's full of killing and kidnaping of people. Always another person to know something about. You never stop learning about a person. Full of people that you need to know, it's a good read. If you don't stop reading like I did.
"When Sophie Brinkmann meets Hector Guzman, she knows everything that she needs to: he’s handsome, he’s charming and he makes her happy. But what she doesn’t know is that Hector has some nasty friends, some even nastier enemies, and an unscrupulous police operation relentlessly following his every move. With her house under surveillance by the law and her life under threat from drug traffickers, gangsters, and hitmen, Sophie must decide who she can trust – and whose side she really wants to be on."
It might be difficult to understand how an ordinary nurse like Sophie falls in love with a criminal type like Hector Guzman. I think this is the reason why Söderberg's novels have a certain appeal. The characters are well-drawn. They are not categorised into bad people being bad, and good people being good. Both sides have good and bad streaks. Nothing is black and white in this account of what is happening when an innocent nurse, by chance, is entering into the world of international crime.
One can have a doubt about how someone like Sophie can handle all the criminal elements she meets. It is a violent story. Once you have seen a brutal murder would you not call the police? Once you realise that your boyfriend is the leader of an international criminal gang, would you not, at least, try to get out of it? There are questions here that do not get an answer. Once you are on the train, maybe you just have to continue.
The tempo is extremely high through all of the three books (yes, I had to read the other two at once! 'The Other Son' and 'The Good Wolf'), and I, at least, found myself holding my breath. Constantly moving forwards, even when there seem to be quiet moments. We meet gangsters, thugs, and both honest and corrupt policemen, and women. In all of this, Sophie has to balance on a tight-rope to be able to come out of this alive, as well as protecting her son.
As the story unfolds, the plot is becoming more complicated, as the international gangs are taking the stake higher and higher. The more complicated the plot is becoming, the more you ask yourself how this will end. Well, the end came quite as a surprise. Considering there really are no winners in this story, I think it was all right.
For those who want something thrilling and absorbing. Where everyday life meets international crime. Where nothing is black or white.
It seems the first book will be filmed, but no further details available. It will be interesting to see who will play Sophie, Hector, and Albert, and all the other characters. I can't wait to see what the movie producers will make of it.
The Other Son, Brinkmann Trilogy #2, Alexander Söderberg , Neil Smith translation from Swedish. 2015 / 2019 iBook.
Storyline travels all over Europe and Scandinavia ! Delightful. The Andalucian Friend, #1, was a thriller about Sophie Brinkmann, once an ordinary woman, a nurse, grieving widow, mother to a teenage son, who is faced with the consequences of joining Hector Guzman's crime empire when she fell in love with him. Now Hector is in a coma! Power struggles become her norm. But who can be trusted as this thriller builds at a very fast pace. It is a page turner with short chapters each a new location..... Good construction . Very many characters and who’s on which side .... Tensions rise and bodies fall. Those who survived are being hunted............Where is book three for the finish? Trilogy without an ending!!!!! Not my usual kind of read but a real page turner........
I enjoyed this second book in the trilogy as much as I did the first: The Andalucian Friend. The cast of characters was easier to follow, and this novel continued the story of Sophie Brinkmann and her unintentional involvement in international crime. As with the first novel, there was lots of violence, a moral dilemma with hard choices for Sophie, and another surprising ending, all set up for the third book in the trilogy. Sadly I am not able to find the third book in the trilogy published in English. If anyone can help with that, I would appreciate it. Even a summary would be useful so I could learn the fate of the characters.
I read and enjoyed the first book in this trilogy - but I had a bit of a hard time keeping up with this book. The alliances and feuds between the various characters are very hard to keep track of and I found myself rooting against everyone - villains and police alike.
I found myself putting this down more often and being more reluctant to pick it up - though I enjoyed reading it each time I did - just not in the way I'd enjoyed teh first book.
The book started with one of those flashback scenes. I really am not a fan of those. Took a while for things to fall into place. It was enjoyable but no where near as good as the first book.
