Yoga for Fibromyalgia: Move, Breathe, and Relax to Improve Your Quality of Life

Rate this book
Eight simple and relaxing yoga sequences for fibromyalgia patients looking to manage their pain, alleviate their fatigue, and improve their overall well-being

Fibromyalgia is characterized by widespread pain in muscles, ligaments, and tendons, as well as fatigue and multiple tender points ( places on the body where slight pressure causes pain). Although mainstream medicine has yet to devise a successful plan for treating fibromyalgia, yoga offers sensible strategies for managing—and sometimes overcoming—the pain.

Written by a yoga teacher and suitable for both yoga novices and veterans, this book is grounded in simple movements, breathing techniques, and guided visualization and relaxation sessions. Readers learn to reduce stress and manage fibromyalgia through eight four for pain relief, one to diminish fatigue and improve sleep, and three for maintaining body awareness and general flexibility. The author’s simple, supportive language and mixture of theory, practice, and the latest scientific data offer hope for one of today's most challenging health conditions.

Due to the nature of pain symptoms, Fibromyalgia sufferers often find it very difficult to exercise. Yoga is a good choice. The movements gently stretch out tight muscles and relieve tension. Moreover, it is possible to adapt a program for those times when pain or other Fibromyalgia related symptoms are at their worst.

Yoga for Fibromyalgia is the book that I have trying to find for a good long while. This valuable resource shows a variety of yoga postures (complete with color photographs) showing how they can be adapted on those bad days. Many of these movements can be done while you are sitting at the computer or watching television to relieve tension.

Near the end of the book, the author also shows how to combine the positions to create daily routines. Specifically with Fibromyalgia symptoms in mind, the book includes realistic ready made programs for pain relief (upper body, lower body, or general as needed), for fatigue, and for good days.

While this is a very good and useful yoga primer for people with fibro (I am one), I had to give it a less-than-perfect rating for its two glaring flaws:

1. Early in the book, the author explains that we need to take care in "Understand[ing] the difference between a tight muscle and a tense muscle," because stretching tense muscles can be dangerous and lead to injury. After this useful piece of advice, however, there is NO FURTHER EXPLANATION of how to tell a tight muscle from a tense muscle! It would have been helpful for Crozer to include characteristics of muscular tightness versus muscular tense-ness instead of assuming that everyone reading will know the signs and symptoms of both.

2. This book is rather short, and I would have liked to see some more advanced moves included. Perhaps some yoga expert can write a follow-up book of more advanced yoga moves for people with fibro! :-P

That said, this book is very useful and I look forward to including most of these yoga poses in my daily routine! I recommend it for people with fibro or other chronic pain issues who want a basic, no-frills primer on yoga and its benefits.

I had such high hopes with this book. Sadly, it didn't actually meet them. It is a useful book and I am glad I own it. It is very small, mostly an overview. It does have some interesting information and suggested positions. I have Fibromyalgia. Some days I am in a lot of pain and can barely move. I do know that Yoga has been proven to help Fibromyalgia pain. I was hoping for a system of yoga. A place to start and gradually move to a regular yoga work out. This book is mainly a book of suggestions for those who are looking at integrating yoga into their regular fibro treatment. It has been helpful, but not all I had hoped it would be.

A great book to help you continue to do yoga with a chair during flair up times and to have the confidence to go unaided for when you are having a good day. It is worth a read when you find yourself struggling and stressing yourself out when you find yourself one day being able to do amazing stretches to not being able to lift a limb. It can be very disappointing when this happens and this book help you to understand not to be so hard on yourself, yoga sessions are journeys and not every road trip go along the same roads.

Good for someone new to yoga and needs VERY gentle exercises. Could be of great comfort/support to those with fibromyalgia as the woman doing the postures is a yoga teacher who has had fibromyalgia for years.
