Life is a series of chances and regrets. The weak falter, leaving the strong to suffer the wicked and depraved. Cole Stockton was a lion among lambs seeking penance for his dark past, and I was only too eager to escape my own.
It starts with a flicker in the distance. A slow burn that radiates a tireless beckoning. No matter how hard you fight to resist the allure, you succumb. Drawn in like a moth to a flame, only to watch your precious wings scorch and fade to dust.
I had thought there were only two lessons in life needed to survive.
One: Love, with everything you are.
Two: Live, for everything you dream.
But there was a third, and that was perhaps the toughest of all.
“Three.” His warm breath fans across my cheek as his fingers dig into my bare hips. “Fight, with everything you have.” The whip sails through the air and cracks across my sensitive flesh.
I live a life where I play many roles...as most women do when they are a wife, mother, and caretaker of a rowdy dog with an appetite for furniture. But when I'm not working my day job, or spending time with my family, I can be found glued to my laptop where I love to create worlds with sexy alpha males and brazen heroines. I'm also an avid fan of heavy metal and rock music, and regularly attend music festivals with my better half.
I received an ARC of this book in exchange for an honest review. A step away from the paranormal romance she's known for, KJ Coakley tries her hand at a BDSM romance that is hot! A little slow paced at times, particularly towards the beginning. Occasionally felt somewhat more clinical and less sexy in the club negotiation scene, but still a worthy read. A great book about finding love again after tragedy. Sexy BDSM scenes. When I also beta read this book, the ending felt "unfinished". In the published version, the ending was spectacular. Loose ends were tied up and I loved the ending, particularly the last chapter, epilogue and "later". I definitely recommend you read this.
I received an ARC of this book in exchange for an honest review. Overall I liked this book, but I was angry at it for most of the time I read it. Cole and Marissa were a complex couple who honestly tried my patience. Neither of them were very emotionally mature, even though both were successful professionally. I felt they both needed extensive therapy and to really get the hell over themselves. Too many secrets, too many lies, too many games, and WAY too little productive communication. Parts of it just triggered SSC alarms in my head, but in the end, it all pretty much worked out ... what hopeless romantic doesn't love an HEA?
Edit 5/28/15: I had a long road trip yesterday, and I decided I needed to read this again. Why? I couldn't stop thinking about it, or the characters, so I needed to revisit them. Yes, they still made me angry, but it was like angry sex. Passionate and raw, and maybe a bit wrong, but you just can't stop yourself. The book filled me with emotion and even the 2nd time around I simply couldn't stop reading! All the makings of a satisfying read. Sometimes you need a book that makes you want to growl and throw your kindle.
Technically, the work was done well with editorial errors overlooked, so it was a clean read which always makes life more pleasant.
Here are some thoughts while I was reading though ... Don't continue if you don't care to read the ramdomness of my brain. ************************************************************************************************************WARNING! SPOILERS AHEAD!!******************************* **********************************************************************************
1. Parker is a prick: You NEVER leave your wingman!! DUDE! Did you learn NOTHING from Top Gun?!? You never ever leave a complete newbie to find her way to a place and figure out everything for herself when you are supposed to be her support, her escort, and her friend. If you were that concerned with getting your own rocks off, you should have made sure she was safe first. But, that's a man ... thinking with his dick.
2. There is NO WAY IN HELL an unvetted guest would ever be allowed free access in a club without an escort, would be allowed into a private room with a member she'd never laid eyes on before, or be allowed to play in a private room. I've been Cassandra, I've been Trinity, and I've been a DM ... it isn't done. It violates SSC all day long. This woman clearly exhibited that she had no clue what she was doing and was unfamiliar about the normal practices of such an establishment, but they are going to just let her wander off with a stranger? Yes, I know Trinity gave a half-hearted attempt to stop her, but Master X intimidated her into backing off. If she didn't have the balls to stand up to doms in the club then she needed to hand her job over to someone else or grab a DM and get them involved.
3. Regardless or perhaps in light of above, Marissa was STUPID to go into an enclosed room with a MASKED dom she didn't know from her daddy and allowed herself to be blindfolded and restrained. Yes, there was a DM outside the room, yes there were cameras, but they don't know what was negotiated, and once she was restrained he could have gagged her (he did threaten to) and the DMs wouldn't have known if she screamed "red" or not. Serious damage could be done to her before anything was noticed on the monitors. The moral here is, don't close yourself off with doms you don't know.
4. Was anal negotiated? Normally, that is something that is discussed beforehand, but from her reaction it seemed that he just took it upon himself to decide for them both. Would she have ok'd it? Maybe, maybe not. You're probably thinking "well if she didn't like it she could have said 'red' " ... well yes, but we are talking virgin sub here, who is already drowning in sensation, and probably isn't in any frame of mind to agree or disagree with much of anything ... plus she is intimidated by this dom as well. And we go back to why they should have had more than a "hi how do you do?" in the public area.
5. Obligations? Your only response to a man wanting to basically keep you as a pet for a month is you have obligations? WTH is wrong with telling him you have a child? It isn't like you are on a first date and you are trying not to scare him off! You don't have to give him your life history, but DAMN! A child is not an "obligation", like a business luncheon with a client!
6. Crabs on a crack whore, Cole ... Dude!! Bipolar much???
This is the first book that I read from this author. IF you are looking for something a bit dark, mixed with a bit of mystery, hot BDSM scences, pick this up. I was sucked right in.
The first chapters just leave you an emotional wreck. I was not expecting that. Marissa has been in love since her childhood with Derek. You can just feel the love that they had for each other, even though you only got a bit of Derek. My heart just broke for Marissa after a tragic accident.
It's been months since Marissa has lost her husband. She is in a depression. She starts to read her sister's Leah's romance books. She is intrigued by some of the BSDM books but knows that she will never get over her husband.
In comes her assistant and BFF, Parker. I just love the banter between the two. They come off as a brother and sister. Parker and Marissa are away on a business trip and he convinces her to visit a club, a BSDM club.
In this club, she meets Master X and has an experience of a lifetime. If you are not conformable with spanking and whip and the harder stuff, leave this book alone. Marissa doesn't know how to feel after this experience and Master X just ups and leaves.
The book jumps 6 years ahead. You meet Cole. A head strong, controlling, and ruthless business man. He will do what ever it takes to get ahead. Marissa is now trying to keep her father's company from bankruptcy. Marissa has a meeting with Cole and little does she know that he is Master X, but he remembers her all too well.
Marissa has a backbone and doesn't back down until Cole makes it impossible for her not to turn to him. He has a solution to her problem and it will only be a month in his service. Marissa is angry and intrigued. She wants what Cole wants to give.
You have everything in this book. The scenes are between Cole and Marissa are hot. But Cole is heading something.
I don't want to give the story line away. But there is a child involved, an auction, Homeland Security, death and so much more.
The book was written in both Marissa's and Cole's POV. And written well. I look forward to more books from this author.
I received an ARC in exchange for an honest review.
I had never heard of this author when I asked to read the book. It was a chance I'm so glad to have taken! The story was intensely emotional and the sex was crazy hot. It was a story about conquering grief and learning to love again after thinking it was impossible. It was also a tale of realizing you could be loved, even when you feel like you're not very lovable because of past faults that have carried consequences.
Marissa and Cole fell fast and hard, even though it was the last thing either of them wanted. She had lost what she was convinced was her one and only true love of her life and had become solely concentrated on her work. Cole was spending his life paying for a mistake from his past and trying to hide his true self from those around him and ultimately himself. When they come together it's an insanely sexy connection accompanied by a constant pull and push with each of them doing one or the other at different times.
As much as Cole wants to stop pulling away and give his heart to her, it isn't possible until his past is rectified. He's not even sure if she'll want him after she sees him for who he really is. Marissa has secrets of her own that could shatter the fragile hold that's tethered them together so far. But when the bottom falls out and everything around them crumbles the truth about what is ultimately important in life is revealed to their hearts. Past secrets and sins can be forgiven when the only thing that matters is being able to love each other.
The beginning brought tears of sadness, as well as several other times throughout the book...then there were more tears at the end but they were happy tears of knowing that these two damaged souls had found solace within the other. I will most certainly read something else by this author!
I have to start off saying that I was in tears in the first chapter something you don't expect when you first start reading a book. But I won't give anything away as to why...
Marissa has been lent some BDSM books and gets intrigued by what she is reading in these books.
Marissa ends up going on away on a business trip with her bff Parker who when your reading this book you can feel that they have a very natural banter between them like a brother and sister would.
After Parker convinces Marissa to go along with going to the bdsm club she meets Master X. If your not into bdsm books containing spanking etc this book may not be for you.
Fast forward 6yrs we meet Cole who would sell his own mum to keep ahead in the game. Marissa on the other hand is trying to save her dad's business from bankruptcy.
A meeting takes place between Cole and Marissa. Cole can offer her a solution to her problems all he wants in return is for Marissa to to be st his service for one month.
DESIRE'S DECEPTION is a BDSM story, that is as far from vanilla sex as you can imagine. Don't read it if you cannot stand anything about BDSM, otherwise grab it right away!
Ms. Coakley has woven an utterly captivating story that will keep you on the edge of your seat, and no, it is not only about sex. It's about free will, making choices, fessing up to who you are, what you are. The writing is spectacular, plot twists abound, the characters are like none I have ever read about, and the sex is ... well, you'll have to read it for yourself to judge.
DESIRE'S DECEPTION is not at all what I thought it would be, and that is the highest form of compliment I could pay! A book you will not soon forget! Astonishing!
I received a complimentary copy from the author in exchange for a fair and honest review.
HOLY HOTNESS!! This book had my kindle smoking whilst reading it!! I've never read anything by this author before, but I understand this is the first BDSM book and wow, she nailed it!! I was captivated with this story from the first page!! It's funny, it's sexy, it's full of suspense and dark!! Loved the twist and turns!! Most of all I loved Cole and Marissa! Well written, 5 stars isn't enough for this book, I'd give it a 10 star rating! Thanks to K.J. Coakley for the copy of this book! I thought this was AMAZING!!!
*acr copy received for review* If you want to read a book that has real substance to the story, then this is it. While this story does have a dark side, it has light at the end of the tunnel also. KJ finds a way to give you a lovely beginning with love and then slaps you in the face with tragedy that has you flipping back the pages to make sure you didn’t miss something. Then Marissa does something I am just too afraid to try and explores a club at the persuasion of a friend and gets the level of release her body needs to get better. The acceleration in time through me off but I understand why and got over it. Fate put Cole into Marissa’s life and turned it upside down. While fighting for her family’s legacy she ends up freeing herself from the turmoil that she has been harboring for the last few years. Cole also has great life changing epiphany moments that make him almost human compared to when we first meet him. This story took me on a path where I thought I knew what was going to happen next and then wham!, it went a different direction. This book had me yelling at it while staying up past my bedtime just to see what was going to happen next. KJ’s first try at this genre was a success. I can’t wait for more like this work of art.
I received an ARC of this book in exchange for an honest review. In her first dark erotica book, K.J. Coakley delivered a winning BDSM story. Desire’s Deception was an edgy, steamy read with subject matter that pushed boundaries and at times, may force the reader outside their comfort zone. Yet, there was enough spark to want to know what happens next. K.J.’s attention to details made the picture more vivid in my mind and yet my head was spinning to figure out what would happen next as tidbits were revealed. The characters were complex, well-defined and the emotions jumped off page as this story unfolded. Marissa and Cole both bring a strong presence and baggage to their relationship and must deal with the pains and struggles from their past in order for find a future together. I definitely recommend this book.
I received a copy of this book from the author for an honest review.
Wow, what a book. I went through every single emotion that I have inside me while I read this book. From sadness right the way through to happiness, shock to awe. I connected with Marissa on so many levels, as I think most women will. Cole is cocky, enigmatic and all round alluring and like Marissa I was drawn to him like a moth to a flame. I loved the whole story and there was not a thing that I would have changed, its the perfect HEA in my eyes. If your looking for a book with some twists, some insanely hot sex scenes, BDSM scenes, heartfelt emotional scenes then this is your book. Give it a try you will not regret it, I guarantee it.
Wow. It's really hard to find a place to start. If you want your emotions to go on a rollercoaster of a ride, hop on board because that's what you'll get. This story about Marissa and Cole will have you crying, breathless and quivering by the time you finish. The story snags you right off the bat with Marissa's loss of her husband. Having you crying your eyes out and feeling the loss right along with her. You get to experience her finding herself, to losing herself, and doing it all over again in one fail swoop. I would recommend this book over Fifty Shades of Grey any day of the week. It will have you clinching for more.
This book was absolutely amazing! The author writes in a way where you can connect with the characters and feel. I'm very excited to read the next one on the series. I laughed, I cried, and lets just say I cussed a few times. The twists in the stories kept you on your toes and I was pleasantly surprised at the end. You really want to read this book it was amazing.
This book is not for the faint of heart. Shockingly detailed. I couldn't put it down! Sexy BDSM scenes. Lots of action. Loads of Suspenseful Intrigue. You will need tissues. From a New Fan... Pam James.
This story, what can I say I was hooked and loved it from start to finish. I wish someone would have told me how hooked I would have become over it. I was sucked right in without a warning in sight. The BDSM really blew my mind hell the whole thing just blew my mind the ending really caught me off guard and left me craving for more, I kept hitting the next button on my kindle knowing that more was not going to come. I'm left with this feeling of wanting the alpha Cole more then anything I want to read more about his Dominate ways and can't forget the amazing and really wonderful Marissa she just breaks your heart in the first few chapters then you can't but love how her story turned out. Cole and Marissa are this super amazing power couple that KJ Coakely has written about with every BDSM fantasy in mind. No this is not my first time reading her work and it wont be my last time reading anything by her either. She's an amazing author that knows how to get her readers coming back for more and more. Some of this story was a bit slow paced but it worked really well other times I had to tell myself to slow the hell down, I was eating up all the words as fast as I could. Trust me when I say this is a MUST READ cover to cover. Ever word and every dot has you blowing your mind for more.
***I received this story for free in exchange for an honest review***
What a book. Holy hell I don't know what I was expecting but this book just blew me outta the water.
The start of the book had such an emotional impact you were sucked right it, feeling the heartache and emotional turmoil right along with the MC Marissa.
After overcoming such a devastating loss Marissa is intrigued by what she reads and tries her hand at a BDSM club, coming face to face with none other than Master X.
Skip 6 years and Marissa is living a whole different life, trying to save her families business going bankrupt she makes a deal with CEO Cole Stockton, be at his beck and call 24/7 for 4 long weeks. There time together will be full of secrets and fulfilling that's sexual desire of dominance that Marissa craves.
The twist and turns in the book had me turning pages needing to know what happens next.
wow! This book took me on a journey through every single emotion. Cole was just the right mix of arrogant alpha and tender gentleman. I loved how Marissa was a strong woman and not snivelling and whiny. There were some fabulous twists in the story, some you could see coming a mile away but it still wasn't clear exactly how the story would play out which was very clever. I can't really fault the book, the sex was hot, the characters were believable and the story had great plot and exciting twists.
KJ is a new author for me. I received a copy of this book with the promise of an honest review. I'm an avid (some say rabid) reader and this is in the top 15 of all time favorites.
I have a little bit of knowledge of the BDSM world and this book is H-O-T!! It does come with a warning label for a reason.
This story tells of heartache, brokenness, rejoicing and a HEA that you didn't see coming. The twists and turns KJ weaves with her words capture you to the point that you don't want to put the book (or iPad) down.
Desire's Deception started me out on an emotional journey....not many books take me from tears in the first chapters anger and angst and excitement all in the span of one book so seamlessly. This was a book I could not put down. Once I started reading, I wanted to know what was going to happen next. The characters were well developed and the story line well thought out. Well worth the read. Can't wait to read more by this author.
Great story about finding one's true self. Marissa's life is altered by a tragedy. While trying to find herself she meets Cole. He introduces her to a whole new world. In the process she is exposed to the secrets of his past. Can he be her knight in shining armor, or is he the devil in disguise? Cole is a complex character who I rooted for throughout the book. The story is full or twists and suspense. Once I started I couldn't put it down. Looking forward to the sequel.
KJ Coakley is a new author for me and this was a book I couldn 't put down with well developed characters and a story line about finding love after tragedy that was very well thought out . I adored the characters Marissa and Cole .They fell fast and hard for each other , even though it was the last thing either of them wanted. The story was intensely emotional , heartbreaking , breathtaking and the sex was smoking hot. Looking forward to read more books from this author.
I was gifted this book for an honest review. Wow, I didn't want this book to end and can't wait to read more about Marissa and Cole. At the beginning of the book I had tears in my eyes which I didn't expect so early into the book. This book contains hot sex and hot BDSM scenes as well as being emotional. If you're into reading about BDSM then this is a must read!
I am a dominant, and it was nice to see BDSM written in a more realistic light than some of the books I have read. I really enjoyed the internal dialogs, almost as much as the scenes. And the scenes were freaking HOT!
This was not a quick read, it was worth it though!
When Marissa looses Derek she believes she will never love again. Finding herself in deep sorrow her friends are so worried about her. While out of town on business she finds herself interested in a different life style. Once she looses her dad she finds herself having to let loose of her control I love this book
I received a free copy in exchange for an honest review. WOW what an amazing book. My emotions were all over the place! This book has completely blown me away. This book has the perfect amount of angst, steam suspense and humour. This is by far one of the best I have read this year. This is my first read by her and it will not be my last.
I loved this book. I had no idea it would go the way it did and man was I delightfully surprised. I haven't read a book that went the way this one did l, which is a nice change. It had me sitting on the edge of my seat in anticipation, just hanging in every word, letting every chapter captivate me and shock me. Great work and well written, dialogue was easy going and characters felt relatable.
