A Medieval style cottagecore novel brimming with ancient magic, forbidden loves, and strong bonds of Sisterhood. The imagery the narrative conjures up is simply breathtaking in the descriptions of the natural landscape, and pulls you into the story almost immediately. There are some quite dark scenes that surprised me at the very beginning, but I see that they were necessary for the plot, and setting the tone for certain characters. The spoken dialogue feels a bit stiff and formal to me, even for this time period, and I think it would flow better if the author had used more natural conjugations and speech patterns.
As the Guardian Witches, Mathilda and her coven of sister witches must protect the people of the village, and the nature of the forest, and maintain the balance between Light and Darkness. They need to hide their magic and true natures from the public since the Church is still burning witches at the stake in this time period. I did like that there was not too much emphasis on romance, but still the five women must conceive a child within the same year in order to continue their magical lines. I found the fertility spell to be a very interesting concept. There are some good romantic scenes though, somewhat flowery and tasteful
The plot gets more twisted the deeper you get into the story, but the overall effect of the book was pretty cozy,
I did not know going into this book that it is actually a Prequel to Patton’s debut novel, “The Knowing”. Now having started from the prequel, I am very curious to see how this universe unfolds in the future now that I know its origins.

Reading the description of the book and the actual book felt very different. A historical fiction following the lives of a small coven.
They strictly state that the coven needs to be apart due to witch hunts and then have the coven living together and having children without having husbands.
I was not a fan of the reproduction arc of the plot, and so many times the entirety is f the plot could have been avoided.

Let me start by saying I really enjoyed the general premise and plot points in the story. Anything with healing magic is right up my alley. I also loved the conflict with dark magic and the battle between the half sisters. Unfortunately, the writing itself, while technically proficient, felt both a little too flowery and formal for my own personal tastes. If it had just been a bit grittier or natural, I would have raced through this one. All in all, I think many readers will enjoy the story

This book has an excellent premise, but unfortunately it didn't follow through all the way for me. I expected to follow one young lady and her coven, but I didn't expect that they would spend the majority of the book living together. That threw me off initially, but I eventually grew accustomed to it.
It started off with some violence pretty early on, and there were some pacing issues in terms of how abruptly other violent or romantic scenes occurred. I never quite related to any of the characters or fell in love with the love interests. (Quite the contrary: I rather disliked the suitors!) There were a couple of plot points that I disliked too, but I don't want to get into spoilers here.
This review has been fairly critical, so let me give some compliments too. The author has a delightful way of crafting a sentence. Her descriptions are vivid and I had no trouble picturing the scenes (even when I lost track of which Sister was which!) There is an atmospheric vibe to the book that makes me think the author enjoys spending time exploring the woods. (I can absolutely relate to that!)
I believe I would have enjoyed the characters more if they'd been more fleshed out. With some more world-building (and the absence of a certain expectant pact, if you will), I think I would have enjoyed it much more. Since I haven't the read the book that this is a prequel to, I may be missing some of the appeal. (I get the feeling that I'm missing some nods to another book.) I have no doubt this book will charm other readers.

Sex: 3/5 (1st sx scene 100 pgs in. The next major one is almost 300 pgs in for ref. Quick but I liked how it was written)
Romance: 3/5 (love at first site- not enough build up for me. Rushed romance. Romantic trysts)
Adventure: 3/5 (picks up half way through the book)
Language: 0
World building: 2/5 (quick paced and not an epic fantasy)

This was a quick read, but I did skip over a few spots in the book in the beginning because it took awhile for it to jump into the adventure and romance bits. It does center a lot around a baby pact. There is a lack of good male characters imo. 😆
(I do think the dude Duncan is a red flag, and I didn’t like his character very much. But he definitely had some growth later)
**The mc is not the most interesting character in the book though-Keep an eye out for Regina’s story in the book because it is good!
I think the romantic plot was not one for me, but overall I enjoyed the other parts. I would have loved more adventure and world building. I felt the book lagging for me at times. There was a lot more mundane musings than I would have liked, but I can tell that the author is a good whimsical writer who has a grasp on the horror parts. I would be curious to read something darker by her.

While this was not badly written perse, I did find several parts of the story to be contradictory as though the author had not fully mapped out the story. The plot had great potential but unfortunately it fell short as everything was just so very predictable and not in the stereotypical fashion but rather in that the characters make decisions that seem to make no sense but is just the easiest option for the author to continue the story. All the characters are pretty flat and do not change from their first appearance which is sad cause they had plenty of opportunities to grow at least a little as one does when growing up. The magic comes naturally to the characters (despite the mothers saying they would need to learn) so it was really quite boring from my perspective. All in all I found it hard to get to the end of the story and was just really disappointed with the overall story.

Kimberly's eccentric writing brings to life the light-hearted cottagecore that greets you with a touch of fluttering magic. As the story unfolds, a darkness begins to envelope our protagonist's life, dragging the newly birthed sisterhood coven into the depths of evil; and a forbidden romance that really captivated my heart. I couldn't put this installment down. Even after reading, I had to take some time to pull my emotions together. I didn't want to say goodbye.

The Beltane festival sets the stage for Mathilda Longhurts learns of her father's betrayal and embarks on a journey to right his wrongs in the prequel to The Knowing. This was such an enjoyable read where you get transported into the world of magic, sisterhood, and hidden secrets. The themes of female empowerment, good vs evil, and transformation were prevalent throughout the whole book, which I loved!
