Librarian note: there is more than one author with this name
Joe Casey is an American comic book writer. He has worked on titles such as Wildcats 3.0, Uncanny X-Men, The Intimates, Adventures of Superman, and G.I. Joe: America's Elite among others. As part of the comics creator group Man of Action Studios, Casey is one of the creators of the animated series Ben 10.
Can we all admit though that this should not be a $5 book? 4 maximum for sure, the whole story is only 20 pages and it seems Dynamite is competing with marvel on who can fill their pages with the most ads by putting an ad for issue 2 barely half way through the first issue, lol. But speaking of the story itself, that was a lot of fun nostalgia. It was hard at first getting past the pretty wonky human face designs, but getting to the alien transformations themselves made it quite worth it as the artist for this series knows what’s up in that department. And while I appreciate how fast this story is already moving and the updated slang for Ben 10 coming out in 2026. I’m still not sure if I will continue this series in single issues. Maybe a trade later along the line, but I will for sure keep my eyes on it. Now jumping into the story, we start this issue with a tease featuring everyone’s favorite galactic conqueror…Vilgax! No power can currently stand up to him…except for one be is nearing the capture of as it sky rockets like a meteor towards earth. And once this threat is wiped off the table, the universe shall be his! So of course we have to meet the group that will find this weapon…the Tennysons! Currently “enjoying” time around the campfire with their grandpa max, Ben and Gwen can’t help but continue to “rage bait” each other as Ben is adamant that Gwen’s ramblings about aliens existing is ridiculous. But Gwen ultimately hits Ben right where it hurts when she alludes to his parents sending him on this trip as an excuse to get rid of him. That’s enough to cause Ben to walk off into the woods to catch some fresh air.
As Ben is enjoying is stroll and getting lost on the process, the military is currently tracking the incoming meteor heading right for his beck of the woods. They may be able to deploy troops surprisingly fast, but that’s never going to stop the curious young Ben from being right next to where it crashes, and ultimately having the tech come up to him and wrap around his arm before he can even yell for his Grandpa Max. Meet the omnitrix! Ahahaha! And when I said surprisingly fast about the military, I meant it as moments later full blown tanks and ATV surrounded by fully armed soldiers surround the crash site as Ben hides behind a tree nearby. At this point Max has started to search the woods for Ben, only to see the green mist from the crash as he realizes his “relaxing” summer is coming to an end extra early.
But as Ben wonders the woods trying to rip this weird watch off while trying to find his camp, suddenly a full blown cyborg bear cuts him off. WHAT THE HELL?! A normal bear sure, but a full blown MF’ing cyborg bear?! Did the military bring this with them?! WHAT?! Ben freaks out and falls back, strangely the entire time talking as if this war with full blown mechanical parts sticking out is just a normal bear, only to accidentally trigger his watch to turn into FOUR ARMS! I love how the green midst forms around him as he changes and then immediately takes on the bear he hilariously refers to as “Freddy Fazbear.” Ben feels different and immediately empowered, and I absolutely love the campy ways throughout this issue as the characters says the alien names whole basically describing their actions. Like Ben threatens to use his “FOUR ARMS” to fight with, lol. But as Ben gets a good hit on the bear, suddenly the badge on his belt lights up red as he shifts back. But that doesn’t stop the presence of a full blown cyborg bear, so Ben quickly runs away and dodges its slashes and he yells for help at his watch…only for it to once again light up as he slams down on it to become heatblast! And out of the two alien designs we have been introduced to, heatblast is my favorite. The style of this book really suits it, and an out of control Ben channeling these flames immediately sends the cyborg bear running.
Ben then notices the army guys closing in on him so he makes a run for it as well, leaving bits of flame sprinkled throughout the area as the army just can’t hemp but note there was some sort of “localized HEAT BLAST.” AHAHAHAHA! We close the issue as Gwen and Max are starting to get concerned, but Max has an extra layer of concern given his past and everything he has encountered before. But we truly end the issue where we started, with Vilgax and his ship tracking the omnitrix to Earth to retrieve the key to ruling the universe!

Let me start by saying I was the prime audience when Ben 10 was first released as a cartoon years ago, and I grew up with the property. Seeing this series return as a comic book got me really excited and looking forward to it. However, I am not sure if it was due to my own hype or that of the fan base, but my expectations may have been too high. This is not necessarily a bad comic, but it was not what I was expecting. This issue retells the origin of Ben 10, similar to the show, while making a few changes to modernize the story and add some nuance. Because of that, it felt familiar, almost like something I had already experienced before. I also felt that some of the dialogue came across as too expositional and unnatural at times. This definitely feels like a book aimed at readers who are completely unfamiliar with the source material. The art was okay, but it did not feel very dynamic from page to page. I am not sure if that comes down to the style itself or if the artist may have been rushed. Some panels did not flow particularly well, and a few of the facial expressions looked off to me. That being said, I still enjoy the property and I am willing to give the first arc a chance before deciding whether or not to continue with the series. I would like to see the series succeed. At the moment, I am on the fence about recommending it, but I would give that recommendation with some reservations. Grade: C
Man of Action: GENERATOR REX.
When I heard there was going to be a Ben 10 comic reimagining, a la BOOM! Power Rangers or IDW Ninja Turtles, I was honestly pretty excited. I think you could do some really cool things with that, using all the toys in the toy box from the outset. This was really nothing though. Didn’t scratch the surface of its potential, didn’t even try to. Take the first issue of any of the other big revitalizations of a cartoon in comic form— take the first Skybound Transformers, for example; it just feels inherently like we’re doing something new, fresh, original yet faithful. This doesn’t at all, it feels like you crammed some references to memes and the internet into the same old pilot episode, but worse and with sometimes horrifying artwork. This is a steaming pile of mediocrity and I wish I had not wasted my $5 nor my twenty minutes. Shockingly little here in terms of redeeming qualities, but I suppose I did like the design and the transformation into Four Arms. As with every page, I could do with way less aloud running commentary from Ben, but that sequence is otherwise kinda neat. Best I got.
I honestly was disappointed in this one. I’ve been a huge Ben-10 fan since I was a child. This issue retells the origin of the character but in a modern setting. First, I’m not a big fan of this art style. Some panels are not well drawn and the overall look doesn’t match the tone of the writing. Second, the dialogue and writing was quite mediocre. A lot of heavy lifting was done with awkward exposition and weird dialogue for the scenes taking place. It seems they are trying to take the series in a whole new direction with a fresh take and new retelling, but I’m not getting that from the storytelling. I’ll give the first few issues of this series a try, but there’s a high possibility that I drop it if it doesn’t gain my attention soon.
Dynamite does not miss!! So glad Ben is back and in a more modern way. Man of Action is officially back in action and I can’t wait to see how Ben’s adventures play out this time. Love the modern dialogue and introduction of the characters. Their voices were all so iconic, I read every bubble in their voices. I was a little bummed that Heatblast wasn’t the first alien but we still got the two best aliens in the first issue! And Vilgax looks even creepier and more powerful! Can’t wait for the next issue!

So excited for this, it actually lived up to my expectations for how this could start - maybe even exceeded them - and they were already very high. Wish it was a bit longer but I’m just glad it’s finally here!
After so long, this is definitely worth the wait. Of course, it would be a lie to say that it’s perfect, since I do have a few notes. But other than that, I highly recommend for all B10 fans new and old!
C'est cool mais super court ? Genre il se passe un seul évènement et faut attendre un mois pour la suite ? J'ai peut-être pas assez l'habitude de lire des comics pendant qu'ils sortent, mais ça me semble quand même très maigre
This was a solid first issue. Felt very familiar, but different enough to excite me as a longtime fan of the show. My biggest gripe honestly was the $5 price tag on was definitely not a $5 issue.
