Something Wild

Rate this book
My life detonated with a single text from my brother, exposing a side of my life I didn’t know existed.

One photo, sent to the entire family—painting me as the villain, then daring me to beg for the details he’ll never give.

Perfect timing. I was already walking away from the family real estate machine—done drafting contracts that trap people, ready for something real, honorable and good.
The text rolled in as I was on my way to buy a ranch in Montana, my escape hatch.

My Plan B.

After closing I discover the land is crawling with problems. There are environmental violations, hidden damage, and someone is furious I got it cheap. Nicola from the DNR is determined to shut my business down and the deeper I dig, the clearer it gets: This isn’t bad luck. It’s sabotage.

With Nicola’s grudging help, I start pulling at threads someone would kill to keep hidden. Is she trying to help me, or keep me close in order to do me in?

And the truth my brother dropped into my life? It’s not staying buried and changes everything.

Everything I’ve built–even what I didn’t know was mine–is in the crosshairs.
I walked away to start over.

Now I’m fighting to protect everything I’ve come to love, knowing I might lose it all.

I would say go pick up copies of the wolf mountain ranches and colson creek and read those along with this book. One of the absolute best part of these books is that so many characters cross over and make appearances. You could read this as a standalone second chance romance if you want. I definitely keep reading for the characters I’ve come to know and love.
I received an ARC of this title, all opinions are my own.

Something Wild indeed! I was glued to this book from the beginning. A wealthy playboy, trying to escape his overbearing, quite vicious family by investing in a ranch in Montana, meets a women whose job it is to, quite frankly, destroy that dream. She sites his new property with all kinds of violations to the environment. And that’s only the beginning of this enemies to lovers, small town, romantic suspense tale.

Royce Novac is struggling to overcome a shock delivered by his evil brother via text. He wants something for himself outside of the family company Royce wants to develop a rundown ranch in Montana into a family vacation destination. But wow was he not prepared for what came next. Enter Nicola Long Horse, Department of Natural Resources, letting Royce know about all the ongoing issues that need to be resolved, environmental issues he’s inherited and knew nothing about. Until now. Until her.

This story keeps you entertained throughout. There are surprise revelations, family entanglements galore, and Royce and Nicola dance around their feelings for quite a while in this slow burn tale of finding something you were not even looking for. Someone who gets you. Understands you. Sees you.

I loved Nicola’s strength. Her resolve. And Royce? Well he’s got a history of breaking hearts, one of which is a very close family member to Nicola. Talk about intriguing and complicated. But he’s doing everything possible to redeem himself. Yea. He’s heart melting for sure.

Nicola comes from the Crow tribe. Her history is emotional and tugs at your heartstrings. She’s had to endure so much hardship but always has had her grandparents by her side. Loved them! Fiercely protective. And her grandma being a bit of a matchmaker is adorable.

Royce is determined to get things in order for his new venture no matter the continuing problems with the land and the longer he’s in Montana, around Nicola, (who he refers to as “Little Horse” - love that) he finds he doesn’t want to tolerate any further abuse from his own family because he now has her family by his side.

Twists and turns galore in this one. Revelations keep coming. And when Royce finally gets Nicola to let her guard down, well they are “chef’s kiss” as a romantic couple.

This story may be a balm to your soul if you’ve suffered thru dealing with family members who are not there for you and worse, may undermine you as Royce’s father and brother do. But he survives and in the end, thrives. With his new family.

Erin has some amazing lines in this book, this one being my favorite I think:

“𝙎𝙤𝙢𝙚𝙩𝙞𝙢𝙚𝙨 𝙮𝙤𝙪𝙧 𝙛𝙖𝙢𝙞𝙡𝙮 𝙞𝙨 𝙣𝙤𝙩 𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝙥𝙚𝙤𝙥𝙡𝙚 𝙬𝙝𝙤 𝙨𝙖𝙬 𝙮𝙤𝙪 𝙩𝙝𝙧𝙤𝙪𝙜𝙝 𝙮𝙤𝙪𝙧 𝙘𝙝𝙞𝙡𝙙𝙝𝙤𝙤𝙙,” 𝙝𝙚 𝙨𝙖𝙞𝙙 𝙦𝙪𝙞𝙚𝙩𝙡𝙮. “𝙄𝙩 𝙞𝙨 𝙨𝙤𝙢𝙚𝙩𝙞𝙢𝙚𝙨 𝙩𝙝𝙤𝙨𝙚 𝙮𝙤𝙪 𝙨𝙪𝙧𝙧𝙤𝙪𝙣𝙙 𝙮𝙤𝙪𝙧𝙨𝙚𝙡𝙛 𝙬𝙞𝙩𝙝 𝙗𝙚𝙘𝙖𝙪𝙨𝙚 𝙩𝙝𝙚𝙮 𝙝𝙖𝙫𝙚 𝙘𝙝𝙤𝙨𝙚𝙣 𝙩𝙤 𝙥𝙧𝙤𝙩𝙚𝙘𝙩 𝙮𝙤𝙪𝙧 𝙝𝙚𝙖𝙧𝙩 𝙡𝙞𝙠𝙚 𝙩𝙝𝙚𝙞𝙧 𝙤𝙬𝙣.”

Full stop.

I highly recommend this book, it definitely can be read as a stand alone, but Erin does weave in characters from her Colson Creek series and others from this series into the story. Oh and Abel? The ranch manager that becomes Royce’s go-to guy? A former Ranger? Here’s hoping his story is next!

Rating: Obsessed

Wolf Mountain Ranchers is one of my all-time favorite series, so when Erin announced we were heading back to Wolf Mountain, the scream I screamed probably registered on the Richter scale.

And as if that wasn't enough, the book opens with Mark being all growly, protective Papa Bear, and ridiculously sexy. Was it for a good reason? Yes. Did that stop me from immediately melting into a puddle? Absolutely not.

This story follows Royce (Morgan's brother from Book 4), who's finally had enough of his controlling, toxic family. Determined to start over, he buys a ranch in the place he loved most as a kid only to discover his family has been hiding some pretty massive, life-changing news from him for months. So he does what any sane person would do: quits the family business, sells his condo, and throws himself into building a new life in Montana.

Then along comes Nicola from the Department of Natural Resources, whose job is basically to make Royce's fresh start as complicated as possible. Between environmental violations left by the previous owner, mounting fines, and trying to untangle what's become of his personal life, Royce has more than enough on his plate.

What I loved most was watching Royce and Nicola slowly realize they understand each other in ways no one else does. Nicola, a member of the Crow Tribe, is strong, grounded, and unwavering in her convictions. She's led a life full of disappointments and heartbreak. Royce is determined to break old patterns and become a better man than the people who raised him (stepmother Elise not withstanding). As they chip away at each other's defenses, their slow-burn romance becomes impossible not to root for.

The tender moments between them were my favorite. They're vulnerable with each other in ways they can't be with anyone else, and those quiet scenes where they let themselves be taken care of instead of being the one taking care absolutely squeezed my heart.

"𝐑𝐨𝐲𝐜𝐞 𝐍𝐨𝐯𝐚𝐜 𝐰𝐚𝐬 𝐚 𝐠𝐞𝐧𝐮𝐢𝐧𝐞𝐥𝐲 𝐝𝐞𝐜𝐞𝐧𝐭 𝐦𝐚𝐧, 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐈 𝐡𝐚𝐭𝐞𝐝 𝐭𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐦𝐞."

And because this is an Erin book, there's plenty more going on than just the romance. We get a touch of suspense: possible sabotage behind the environmental issues, a previous owner who seems to have vanished into thin air, and plenty of family drama (both blood and chosen). The result is a story packed with heart, healing, mystery, and a romance that left me smiling long after I finished.

“𝙎𝙤𝙢𝙚𝙩𝙞𝙢𝙚𝙨 𝙮𝙤𝙪𝙧 𝙛𝙖𝙢𝙞𝙡𝙮 𝙞𝙨 𝙣𝙤𝙩 𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝙥𝙚𝙤𝙥𝙡𝙚 𝙬𝙝𝙤 𝙨𝙖𝙬 𝙮𝙤𝙪 𝙩𝙝𝙧𝙤𝙪𝙜𝙝 𝙮𝙤𝙪𝙧 𝙘𝙝𝙞𝙡𝙙𝙝𝙤𝙤𝙙,” 𝙝𝙚 𝙨𝙖𝙞𝙙 𝙦𝙪𝙞𝙚𝙩𝙡𝙮. “𝙄𝙩 𝙞𝙨 𝙨𝙤𝙢𝙚𝙩𝙞𝙢𝙚𝙨 𝙩𝙝𝙤𝙨𝙚 𝙮𝙤𝙪 𝙨𝙪𝙧𝙧𝙤𝙪𝙣𝙙 𝙮𝙤𝙪𝙧𝙨𝙚𝙡𝙛 𝙬𝙞𝙩𝙝 𝙗𝙚𝙘𝙖𝙪𝙨𝙚 𝙩𝙝𝙚𝙮 𝙝𝙖𝙫𝙚 𝙘𝙝𝙤𝙨𝙚𝙣 𝙩𝙤 𝙥𝙧𝙤𝙩𝙚𝙘𝙩 𝙮𝙤𝙪𝙧 𝙝𝙚𝙖𝙧𝙩 𝙡𝙞𝙠𝙚 𝙩𝙝𝙚𝙞𝙧 𝙤𝙬𝙣.”

Thank you, Erin for taking us back home to Wolf Mountain and for the ARC.

Slow-burn romance, intrigue and suspense are all represented in this book. Royce and Nicola are both in their forties, wary of love and relationships and set on taking a new direction in their lives. He has finally decided to leave the family business that he has come to hate, as well as put distance between himself and his toxic father and brother. He is making a drastic change of direction by leaving the corporate world in New York City to take ownership of a ranch in Montana and start a new agri-tourism business. His sister and her family live near by and he is looking forward to a change of pace.

Unfortunately, the minute he signs the change in ownership papers, he is confronted with serious and rather costly problems. Besides the livestock and heating problems, Nicola, who works for the Department of Natural Resources, informs him that he is facing fines for serious environmental infractions on the ranch which must be dealt with in a timely manner. With the brutally cold winter, and remediations are put on hold, though Nicola is required to make frequent visits to check on the progress.

Royce and Nicola clash and spark, but also respect the other. They are also very aware of their attraction to the other. Nicola has sworn off men after ending her relationship with an abusive ex. Royce’s history with her aunt and his situation with the DNR make him off limits anyway. As for Royce, he doesn’t have the time or the energy to pursue anything while dealing with the multitude of problems on the ranch. There is also the new and tentative relationship with his newly discovered daughter and grandson which requires his focus. Of course, his father and brother are not taking his defection well and are determined to make him miserable.

Royce and Nicola are hit with even more trouble, the kind that puts their lives in danger. Royce goes into full protector mode and Nicola unexpectedly welcomes it. She and her grandparents become guests at Royce’s ranch indefinitely. Let’s just say the close proximity helps to bring the two closer together both physically and emotionally. Both are strong willed, stubborn and resilient. Nicola gradually sees that Royce is a good man with a generous and kind heart, and a man who stands by his word. He admires her strength, take charge attitude and feistiness, but also sees the pain she tries to hide. They heal each other and learn to stand together in the face of turmoil and unexpected twists.in their lives. Royce left one toxic family and found another in Montana who accepted him as he is and welcomed him into the fold.

This wonderfully twisty and heartstring-tugging book has my full recommendation.

Something Wild is easily one of my favorite books in the Wolf Mountain Ranchers series.
I’ve been looking forward to Royce and Nicola’s story, and Erin Fitzgerald absolutely delivered. Royce is exactly the kind of broody, guarded hero I love to read about, and watching his walls slowly come down for Nicola was everything I wanted it to be. One of my favorite parts of the story was seeing Royce drop everything when Nicola needed him. His actions spoke louder than words, and it made their connection feel genuine and deeply earned.
The slow-burn romance was perfectly paced, building tension and emotion without ever feeling rushed. I loved the country girl/city boy dynamic between Nicola and Royce, and the way their differences challenged and complemented each other throughout the story.
As always, Erin creates a small-town world that feels like home. The found-family relationships, redemption arc, and Indigenous representation added so much depth and heart to the story. These characters aren’t just falling in love—they’re finding where they belong, and that’s one of the things I love most about this series.
And can we talk about Abel for a second? I was not expecting him to come out of left field the way he did, but now I’m completely invested and desperately need his story next. Erin gave us just enough to leave me wanting more.
Royce and Nicola stole my heart, and Something Wild reminded me why I keep coming back to Wolf Mountain Ranchers. If you love broody heroes, slow-burn romance, found family, redemption arcs, and small-town love stories packed with heart, this book is for you.
Another easy five-star read from Erin Fitzgerald.

𝐒𝐨𝐦𝐞𝐭𝐡𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐖𝐢𝐥𝐝 is the 6th full-length book in the Wolf Mountain Ranchers series by Erin FitzGerald, featuring an expected romantic suspense story for Royce and Nicola that I didn’t know I needed!! Royce was basically a playboy cog in his father’s business empire, tired of trying to measure up when he left it all behind to start over on a ranch he bought in Montana near his sister, Morgan. He wasn’t prepared for bomb after bomb to upend his plans, from mind-blowing family secrets to environmental violations and wreckage, lingering outsider anger, and so much subterfuge! Then there’s Nicola, the attractive DNR rep that he can’t seem to figure out. I was locked in from the beginning with the mention of old friends from this series I love, and I enjoyed every emotional twist and turn as Royce and Nicola fought past and present demons to find the happiness they deserve! I love that I never truly see what is coming with this author, but when it’s over, I realize I couldn’t see it any other way! She has a way of weaving the authentic emotions and the slow burn romance in with the riveting suspense to create a wonderfully balanced story! Who knew that the big city business man would make the perfect protective cowboy?!😍 I can’t tell you how excited I am about the characters that I got to know in this story, and how I’ll be anxiously awaiting more from Wolf Mountain and Colson Creek!

I received an ARC for free, and am leaving this review voluntarily.

Y’all know by now if Erin writes it, I’m going to read it, so that’s how I found myself back in Montana!

I found both Royce and Nicola extremely likable. I loved how, even though Royce was a city boy, the moment he stepped foot on the Triple G Ranch, he effortlessly embraced the role of a cowboy. And honestly between all the problems the ranch had and the information in text from Callum if I was him, I wouldn’t ran off to a peach island somewhere lol

I loved Nicola because, despite her traumatic past and difficult experiences both romantic and non romantic relationships, she still allowed herself to be vulnerable and let other people in.

This book had a lot of surprises and shocking twists, and the hits really did keep coming, but Royce, Nicola, and even Abel handled everything with perfectly. Some of my favorite scenes where when Royce was happy all day and would break down the second him and Nicola were along

As with most of Erin’s books, you can’t help but fall in love with the side characters. I know Liam is only 15, but I already want more of him the next time we’re back in Montana! I’m also excited for Abel and Tisha, as well as getting to return to Colston Creek because I definitely need an update on Donna and Erik.

𝙎𝙤𝙢𝙚𝙩𝙝𝙞𝙣𝙜 𝙒𝙞𝙡𝙙 By Erin Fitzgerald

Royce and Nicola have both been through some things. Learning to trust and let someone in can be hard. Even harder is moving from a city life to a hard Montana Ranch life. Top that with someone trying to sabotage things and putting the people you have come to care for in danger. They need to wade through the family lies, secrets and betrayals. This was a slow burn and suspense filled. I was cheering these characters on to hold on to the good and cut out the bad. Totally a standalone but I did enjoyed seeing some of the previous Wolf Mountain characters.

Something Wild is the sixth book in the Wolf Mountain Ranchers romance series. Royce has just bought a ranch in Montana to escape his life in the city and his family, but he gets a lot more than he bargained for. The land is rife with environmental issues that need to be fixed immediately. The only bright side is the person overseeing the environmental issues for DNR is Nicola. The attraction between Nicolas and Royce is instant, but with everything else going on neither of them has time for romance. With Nicola’s help Royce might just be able to get to the root of the problem on the ranch, but can he do it without falling for Nicola?

I have read this series from the beginning and have come to love this town. Royce and Nicola were a good match in my opinion and I liked hi their relationship unfolded. The family drama thrown into the romance kept me on the edge of my seat as things played out. I was pulled in from the beginning of this romance and enjoyed following along as it played out. This wasn’t my favorite book in the series, but it was still a good romance read and I enjoyed it from the beginning.

I have really enjoyed the Wolf mountain ranchers series and was excited to read book 6. This book is Royce and Nicola’s story.
Royce is such a great MMC and I loved his slow burn romance with Nicola. Buying a ranch to escape New York and his toxic family, he arrives to find himself up to his neck in issues following the quick sale. Settling to stay and sort things out he meets Nicola and a chain of events unfurl surrounding the property, former owners and a surprise that his family knew about it. Whilst the romance is slow burn there is a lot happening and I was hooked by the storyline. Such great characters and tension is good, I love that the main characters are older and have life experiences- Erin writes these characters so well.
Read this over two evenings and just loved it. Great story and I love the little teaser at the end.

Tropes: small town / ranch, indigenous rep, city boy and country girl, slow burn, found family

Something Wild by Erin FitzGerald is the 6th book in the Wolf Mountain Ranch Series. Royce has purchased land in Montana to get away from his family and strike out on his own. Unfortunately the property that he plans to turn into a vacation location is riddled with problems. Nicola comes to Royce with more property issues but there’s an immediate spark between these two.

I love Erin’s writing. You feel transported to the location and I love that she weaves mystery into her romance stories. This book also made you realize you do not have to be blood to be family.

I enjoyed this one even though I have not read the other books in the series.

Thanks Erin for the ARC!

My thoughts:
“Sometimes the best surprises are the ones you never saw coming”

Nicola works for the Department of Natural Resources/Fish, Wildlife and Parks.
Royce is a playboy who is over his family, his non-stop life and decides a drastic change needs to happen. So…..he buys a ranch. A ranch he has never seen. A owner that just wants a fast sale.
What could go wrong?
And……
What’s going to happen when Nicola and Royce meet? Definitely should be interesting right?

A city man ends up being a rancher after needing to get away from his toxic family. Royce needs to get away and honestly I was rooting for him from the beginning. His dad and brother were annoying me a little too much!
Nicola is powerfull and fearless, I have to admit that a strong woman character is Erin’s signature. She loves writing about them and does it well!
The story is full of suspense and tension. The slow burn doesn’t make things easier for the characters either but things just click for them.
Overall a nice and easy read, if you are into small town romance with a little suspense this one is for you.

A tissue required, heartbreaking, emotional read that tests the boundaries of family decency & loyalty.

Will Royce & Nicola be able to navigate the minefields of family deceit, secrets, murder & mayhem and come out the other side to find a love & family they’ve always wanted? Sometimes family is not what you’re born into…the gem can be finding the family who loves you not those who use you in the games they play. LOVED IT!!! ❤️❤️❤️
