The Runaway Brides #1

The Stranger I Love

Rate this book
When both attempt to flee their past, can love’s pursuit catch them?

Estelle Lowry has traded her privileged life for anonymity, running away to become Miss Estelle Lewis—governess and companion. But her carefully laid plans unravel when she discovers a man beaten and left for dead. Defying every rule of propriety, she rescues him, bringing him to safety. A connection sparks between the two strangers, yet his injuries keep his face obscured. Before he fully recovers, she is forced to leave in search of employment—without a name, a past, or any way to find him again.

Six months later, Estelle arrives at Rosemont Manor, determined to guard her heart—and her secrets. But her resolve falters when she finds herself drawn to the last man she should want: the brooding and unpredictable Lord Camden.

Atlas Camden has no time for distractions. Due to his complicated past, he is determined to shoulder his responsibilities and keep his family safe. The arrival of his sister’s new companion sets him at odds with himself. Miss Lewis is as headstrong as she is captivating—and far too often at the center of trouble, drawing both his attention and concern. His mother would be scandalized if she knew he was even entertaining romantic notions about a woman in service, let alone one who is half-Irish. Besides, a man with his history has no right to offer his heart—and even less to hope for one in return.

When secrets are revealed and trust crumbles, running from their past is no longer an option. Estelle and Atlas must choose between the new paths they’ve forged or the broken history to which they are still bound.

The Stranger I Love is full of longing, redemption, and courageous love. It is the first book in The Runaway Brides series and is a clean Victorian romance without explicit content.

I loved this story so much! Estelle and Atlas are great characters. They meet when Estelle finds Atlas beat up and she saves him and cares for him. He never sees her during recovery because his eyes are covered and she only sees him all bruised and swollen. So when she leaves they don’t know what the other looks like. Later on, Estelle comes to work for him as his sister’s companion/governess. I loved these characters and their interactions are so fun! Estelle and Atlas have lots of great moments together especially moments pertaining to midnight snacks. The chemistry between them is great. One thing I love about Anneka’s writing is her humor it’s just great and the situations the characters get into are so funny. I also loved Atlas’s sister Augusta. I loved her matchmaking ways. Overall, a great story and I can’t wait for the next one!

“My dear stranger,” I whispered to him in parting. “You must not give up.”

This Victorian runaway bride story is full of longing, redemption, a little mystery and danger, secrets, and a slow-burn romance. I loved this romantic spin on the Good Samaritan story.

Estelle is brave, kind, and intelligent. She battles with trying to please everyone. I loved her willingness to help “Mr. Long” despite her own circumstances and her heart’s connection to her stranger. I adored her wonderful friendship with Augusta. Her struggle with wanting to reveal her secrets to August and Atlas was so strong. I loved Estelle and Atlas’s stolen moments, teasing, and honest conversations. Atlas! He absolutely stole my heart! Atlas is brooding, wounded, and protective. I loved his determination to prove himself after his second chance and to find his rescuer. I loved his love and care of Augusta, he was so gentle and supportive. He definitely struggles with trusting others and a little self-loathing after his ‘accident’. I loved the redemption and peace he finds and the good that he chooses to do. He is absolutely smitten with Estelle! I loved his flirting and challenging her. Their chemistry is fantastic! I loved every moment. Oh, and the larder scenes were perfection!

A few more quotes:
“Well, then. If you desire to hold my hand again, I am all too happy to oblige you.”

“Tell me this. Did you reflect even once on your stranger?” That was not the question I had expected. “No. I did not think of my stranger.” Augusta grinned. “Because my brother consumed your thoughts?” I glanced from one knowing eye to the other and relented with an honest answer. “Not all of them, but I must admit he stole the majority.” Her grin stretched ever higher on her cheeks. “Ah, so Atlas was a romantic thief who stole your thoughts. I have never been prouder of him.”

“I still find you just as wonderful as before. It’s myself that I see differently. Instead of seeing my failures, I see hope. I have proven to myself that I can overcome my struggles if I keep working at it. I do not have to be known for my mistakes any longer. Having you in my life only gives me a greater reason to fight my demons.”

If you could see the grin on my face when I finished this book you would not hesitate to read it yourself!

I could not get enough of this one! Anxiously reading any chance I could get! Rules of Matrimony was one of my favorite books last year and when the ARC sign up for this was released I jumped at the chance. And I am so glad I did! I absolutely loved it. I am a sucker for a redemption ARC and Atlas did not disappoint! I seriously did not like him at all in the beginning of this book. And yet somehow Anneka worked her magic and by the end everything he said or did made me grin. Such a shameless flirt!

And then there is dear Estelle, left in the care of her older brother after the death of her parents and what does he do to “take care of her” after basically abandoning her…engages her to a guy he knows that she has never met! Oh the nerve! (Ok but also he’s not a horrible guy and I’m really hoping he gets his own redemption arc) but Estelle is just good to her bones and has spent all of her life trying to please others but this is asking too much!

This one has an underlying theme of forgiveness and healing through love and overcoming feelings of inadequacy and it is just so so good! Makes you feel like a warm hug at the end and I absolutely loved it! 10/10 would definitely recommend and I cannot wait for more books in this new Victorian runaway bride series in the future!

You know the feeling when you read a book and immediately want to reread it?? Well, that is exactly how I feel about this absolutely delightful Victorian Romance novel!

Anneka has truly delivered a unique reading experience with this book! So many incredible tropes and settings had me utterly captivated! I found myself talking to my book as I was reading, and that’s how I know it’s going to be a favorite. This one has definitely become one of my favorite books of all time!
‘I kicked my legs under my coverlet and silently squealed.’ …GIRL! Me too!! 🫠

Atlas, Atlas, Atlas…where do I even begin when talking about our MMC?? He is a man who acknowledges his faults, tries to right wrongs, and whose epic rescues absolutely put him at a level 10 on the swoony man scale (I totally made that up, but just go with it).

Estelle is a girl after my own heart! She is determined to make decisions for her life, even if that means facing an incredibly difficult change in circumstances. Her ability to face both fear and danger when it comes to others’ safety while still being undone by horses and swimming just makes her that much more endearing.

Augusta! Oh, how I absolutely loved Atlas’s sister, and I am so hopeful that she gets her own story!!
The character development of Atlas, Estelle, and Augusta shows the author’s ability to write a story about imperfect people who not only forgive others but also learn to forgive themselves. It’s a story of grace, patience, love, overcoming fears, facing our pasts, and growth

This is definitely a must read! Whatever you are doing, stop and read The Stranger I Love!

While I did receive an advanced copy from the author, I purchased the book for my own collection. All thoughts in this review are my own.

Thank you to Anneka Walker for the e-arc of The Stranger I Love!

I was completely hooked on this story after just the first couple of chapters! A Victorian-era, dual POV, runaway bride story is already right up my alley, but I absolutely needed to know how Estelle and Atlas‘s journeys would unfold! I loved how the plot beautifully tied into the parable of The Good Samaritan, while simultaneously giving off wonderful The Little Mermaid vibes. 💕

The story starts with high stakes: Atlas has been beaten and left for dead in an alley, and Estelle hears his cries for help as she walks by. Even though they are complete strangers, she feels an inexplicable pull to help him. Before she has to leave, she leaves him in the care of a vicar and a doctor and also leaves him with her most valued possession. That near-death experience completely transforms Atlas, changing the entire trajectory of his life.

When they cross paths again, their chemistry is spectacular - and they have no idea who the other is. I loved their cute moments in the kitchen debating over whether bread is better with jam or cheese, their playful back-and-forth banter, and the steady, slow-burn way they get to know one another. Because they have both lost family members, they share a deep quiet bond over their shared grief, as well.

There is also so much humor injected into this book! The pond scene was a favorite of mine and absolutely hilarious. Estelle is stranded in a canoe with no oars, so Atlas swims out to save her and what happens next had me laughing out loud.

Beyond the humor, Atlas is an incredible hero. I loved the little challenges and wagers he gave her to step outside her comfort zone and help her face some of her fears. He was so incredibly good at meeting Estelle exactly where she was, helping her navigate her fears and anxieties with so much patience and tenderness.💕 this was a beautiful, heartwarming five ⭐️ read!

Anneka R. Walker has written another winner! I absolutely loved this book, and I’m so excited that it's the start of a new series! From the very beginning, this story pulled me in with its mix of mystery, emotion, and sweet romance.

Estelle was such an easy heroine to love. Her kindness and genuinely good heart shone through in every chapter, especially in the way she cared for others even when she was struggling. I especially loved her friendship with Augusta. Their bond felt so natural and warm, and their interactions were some of my favorites.

Atlas was the perfect brooding hero, and the tension between him and Estelle kept me hooked. One of my favorite parts was watching each of them slowly realize who the other was: she was his good Samaritan, and he was her "Mr. Long" aka the stranger she had fallen in love with.

The boat scene was absolutely hilarious and one of my favorites! It was one of those moments that had me grinning and also made me love the characters even more. I also adored Estelle and Atlas’ debate over bread and cheese versus bread and jam—bread and jam is clearly the correct answer. Those little conversations made their relationship feel so natural.

I’ll admit I didn’t care much for Atlas’ mother, though I could understand why she carried the feelings she did toward the Irish. Even so, it added another layer of tension and conflict that made the story feel more realistic and heartfelt.

This book gave me everything I love in historical romance, and I already can’t wait for the next book in the series! Fingers crossed it's Augusta's story! I received an advanced copy from the author. All opinions in this review are my own.

The Stranger I Love

The flirting in this book is adorable and I love how forward, teasing, and playful it is. The banter kept me smiling. I expected a cute love story when I picked up this book but what took me by surprise was the powerful life lessons of

•SERVICE: Estelle risks everything to help a complete stranger in need.

•REDEMPTION: Atlas realizes the mistakes of his past and works hard to change his life for the better.

•COURAGE: Atlas's redemption comes at the cost of his friends who don't understand his desire to change and despise him for it. Estelle leaves the comforts of her home to seek her own freedom.

•FORGIVENESS: Atlas forgives a friend who betrays him and Estelle forgives her brother for abandoning her.

This is a powerful story and I loved every minute of it. You definitely want to add this book to your TBR pile. I'm excited for more to come in this series!

Favorite Line: Chasing perfection hadn’t brought me any happiness. But living, caring, serving, challenging each other—those things mattered.

Anneka Walker is back again with her trademark wit and humor in “The Stranger I Love!” This is the first book in “The Runaway Brides” series. This story of second chances, forgiveness, family and love immediately won me over! This is such a sweet, clean love story! Estelle Lowry is a great heroine—stubborn, brave, kind and willing to risk everything to help a stranger in need. She would rather marry for love and live as a governess than marry someone her brother has picked out for her. What if the stranger she helped ends up being the brother of the girl she is a governess to? Will they recognize one another and come together? Atlas Camden is a great hero and cares so much about his family. There is even a subtle “Mr. Darcy” hand flex moment and a wet shirt scene! Plus, Atlas wants to help others in need by building a cottage hospital. I love the premise of falling in love with a stranger. I appreciate the message that a good man progresses due to the lessons he learns from his mistakes and becomes stronger from them. I just loved every moment of this sweet story and am eagerly awaiting the next book in the series!

Content: I give this book a G to low PG rating. Some examples of the content: mention of gambling.
TW: orphan; past gambling addiction

sweet Victorian romance

This was a sweet read! I was intrigued based on other reviews so I decided to pick it up. I appreciated the forgiveness practiced and how prayer was woven throughout the narrative. There were a couple moments of flirty banter I smiled at, but overall, I didn’t quite feel the chemistry or connection in the main couple. I didn’t really invest too much in the story because of that. I believe part of it is because I was being told to story rather than being shown. The inner dialogue didn’t feel as though someone would actually say these things to themselves in real life. I recommend this story for those who are looking for a Victorian romance with a star-crossed lovers vibe.

This is a new favorite. I absolutely love this book. It is a story of redemption, forgiveness and love.
Atlas, Estelle and Augusta are all so loveable. Atlas, after a near death experience, sees the error of his ways and becomes a much better man. Estelle is determined, kind and courageous. She rescues a man who is on death's doorstep and gives him a fighting chance. Augusta is a bit unconventional, adventurous and adorable. They all need each other.

I am looking forward to the next book in this series. I am positive Augusta's sorry will be an adventure. It can't come soon enough.

Oh my heart! Such a wonderful story of hope and second chances. Anneka can deliver such poignant themes, but still have all the swoon, romance and especially humor.

I loved Estelle and all the crazy situations she gets herself into. The boat scene was chef’s kiss! So hilarious!

Atlas was a reluctant hero. He was always there to rescue Estelle, though he felt unworthy of her love.

There is everything I love in this story with a bonus couple of mysteries included as well. Atlas is trying so hard to find out who his attacker is. He also wants to find the person who rescued him from death’s door. Never guessing she’s right under his nose. Estelle doesn’t realize he’s “Mr. Long” the man she dreams about, but whose face she has never seen.

I enthusiastically recommend this book and am looking forward to Augusta’s story!

📚✨ BOOK REVIEW ✨📚
Title: The Stranger I Love
Series: Runaway Brides (Book 1)
Author: Anneka R. Walker
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

📝 My Thoughts: Perfect, passionate, profound
The story follows Estelle Lowry, a young woman who flees her home to escape an arranged marriage orchestrated by her brother. She ends up in London, where she finds and rescues a severely beaten, unconscious stranger in an alley. She nurses him back to health without ever seeing his eyes or truly knowing his face, only recognizing him as Mr. Long. Circumstances force them apart, and she later takes a governess position under a false name, only to cross paths with Lord Atlas Camden.

The writing quality is top tier, and the readability is so smooth that I flew through the pages. The pacing is perfect, and the plot is incredibly well constructed. I finished reading in 4 hours.

💖 Why I Loved It:
The characters are beautifully engaging, and the emotional payoff is spectacular. Estelle is so resilient, and Atlas has my whole heart. What I loved most was that while both characters are definitely not perfect, their transformation and growth over the course of the story is just so beautifully written. Watching Atlas move away from his past mistakes and seeing Estelle find her own strength made their connection feel incredibly earned. The witty banter between them had me smiling like a schoolgirl, and the ultimate realization of their shared history gave me actual goosebumps. It is an uplifting, beautifully clean romance that reminds you why you fell in love with reading in the first place.

This is the first book in the Runaway Brides series. While it stands beautifully on its own with a gorgeous, satisfying ending, it sets up the next book perfectly. There are no major triggers, just a wonderfully sweet, historical romance.

🔖 Favorite Quote:
"I did not know which one this man worshipped, but they shared a commonality - God."

📌 Final Verdict:
If you love sweet historical romances, identity mix-ups, and a gorgeous forced-proximity romance with an incredible emotional payoff, you need to grab a copy right now. This story has officially taken up permanent residence in my brain and I will be recommending it to everyone.

All the stars for this amazing Victorian romance! Anneka Walker has wowed me again. I absolutely adored The Stranger I Love with its forbidden romance, hidden identity, opposite stations, runaway bride, broody MMC, & lovely teacher/pupil relationship. Such a unique, clever, swoon worthy start to the Runaway Brides series!

Estelle runs away from an arranged marriage hoping to find work as a governess until she comes into her inheritance. Along the way, she encounters a mysterious injured man near death & nurses him back to health until she has to leave without knowing his name or anything about him. Later, at Rosemont Manor, she’s hired as a companion/governess to Augusta Wilde & finds herself drawn to the handsome, broody older brother Atlas, Lord Camden. But she can’t forget the connection she felt to the injured man she rescued or her own hidden secrets.

Atlas was everything I love in a hero: attractive, broody, a bit of a flirt, & heart of gold, with secrets & a troubled past. Though he can’t forget the woman who nursed him back to health or the men who injured him, he’s increasingly distracted by his sister’s beautiful companion & all the exasperating situations she lands in. Whether rescuing a cat, stranded in a rowboat, or caught eating bread & jam late at night, he can’t help but fall for her. But propriety, his past, & his search for his mysterious nurse & the men who nearly took his life threaten any future with her.

I loved Estelle & Atlas and enjoyed watching their relationship bloom even though we know they’re the one each other seeks. The teasing dynamic between them was delightful, especially the jam versus cheese debate, dinner party bets, & witty banter. I also adored Augusta & Estelle’s relationship. Augusta has a learning disability, and I loved seeing Estelle patiently help her learn to read & build her confidence. It was sweet seeing Atlas join in the lessons too.

There’s also a hint of mystery & suspense at the end, and I enjoyed uncovering who injured Atlas & why. Now I’m dying for Augusta’s story!

Highly recommend to clean Victorian romance fans! I received an advanced copy, but also purchased in Kindle Unlimited. All opinions are my own & voluntarily provided.

••I give 5 stars!⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

~When both attempt to flee their past, it will be up to love’s pursuit to catch them…

-My dear friends, I have a most wonderful book to recommend to you! THE STRANGER I LOVE, is such a beautiful story weaved so wonderfully and tenderly with such heart and wit. This story blossoms with such
dear longing, redemption, and courageous love. Watching such resilient and relatable characters choose new paths they’ve forged was quite a captivating journey for myself. I enjoyed seeing characters rise above the past and set expectations to break history to which they were still bound, and together made such a great and significant difference for the better. I adored the swoony, small tender moments amid uncertain plot twists. I absolutely loved watching dear characters choose to follow their hearts and choose to make a small yet significant difference in someone else’s life for the better! Beautiful themes of hope, love, redemption, service, faith, and second chances at life are weaved so lovingly within the pages of this dear story which left me better off than before! This dear story has such heart, depth, and humor. It is such a delightful story worth reading and loving!📚‼️

•Content: Feelings of not measuring up, not being seen/good enough, being “smothered” with attention/pressure to be perfect, being left alone, loss, death of loved ones (off page; mentioned on page), some gambling/gambling halls, being beaten/left to die, healing(both physical call and emotionally, funds being embezzled, mystery, mild danger, some social prejudices, no language, kisses only. No explicit content. Clean Victorian Romance!

Where's the six star button?!

Imagine the Good Samaritan story, but make it a regency romance with a runaway bride. With such a unique and creative premise, it's no surprise that I was hooked from the first page! The Stranger I love had all the cozy, bingeable feels of a closed door regency, but with a freshness and brightness that made me devour it as soon as I could.

One thing that I loved was how the book carried an unexpected depth to it. Beginning with the Good Samaritan scene and continuing with various plot points, the book explored underlying themes of selflessness, forgiveness, and self-love without detracting from our leading lad and lady.

Speaking of our MMC and FMC, Estelle and Atlas were just so perfect for each other. Estelle gives off Anne Hathaway in Princess Diaries vibes, where she keeps embarrassing herself and then trying to play it off and still be cool, not realizing that her quirks are what make her loveable. And Atlas proved to be an easily loved MMC who was romantic without feeling inauthentic.

I also really enjoyed Estelle and Augusta's relationship. There was some great character development that happened for both of them over the course of their relationship. And after reading the (mild) cliffhanger in the epilogue, I NEED Augusta's story!

There were so many other subtle little plot twists, beloved scenes, and funny quotes that I really appreciated throughout the book. The pond scene?! The LARDER SCENE?! All of these little favorite moments complied together to create a fantastic novel. Oh, and as a side note, pay attention to Estelle's gloves. You'll thank me later.

Welcome, Anneka Walker, to the prestigious echelon of authors who write some of my favorite books. Write me some more!

All the love for Anneka R. Walker's The Stranger I Love. I savoured every second of reading this sweet story. From the Victorian setting to the hidden identity to the forbidden love, this story had all the things that make a story fabulous.

I loved how Walker took the beautiful Good Samaritan story and tweaked it into a beautiful romance. It was so well done. The themes of forgiveness, changing for the better, and being present for those we love were woven throughout and added so much to the humor, swoon, and romance of the story.

Atlas was a dream. I loved how humbled he was by his accident and how he worked so hard to be a better person and give to others. Walker did a great job of showing Atlas' continued growth throughout the story. In addition to all this growth, Atlas was so kind and charming and such a flirt. I loved seeing him fall for Estelle.

Estelle was so fabulous! She was strong and determined but also so unsure of herself and her own worth. It was so fun to see her figure out who she was as a person and find the person that felt like home to her. I loved how Estelle's relationship with Atlas developed and changed.

Walker is a master at creating swoony moments from innocent little touches and glances, and those skills are on full display in this story. Those moments between Atlas and Estelle were so good, especially when he helps her with her gloves. IYKYK!

I adored everything about this book. I loved Estelle and Atlas both individually and together.

The Stranger I Love is the first book in Anneka R. Walker's The Runaway Brides series. It can be read as a standalone book.

Thank you to the author for the gifted copy. All opinions expressed are my own.

This was a very sweet and enjoyable story.
The underlying theme of redemption and forgiving oneself for past mistakes is a beautiful message that provides a solid foundation for the characters’ arcs.
It also shows how kindness and compassion can save many people.
The pace is leisurely, without many intense emotions, making it perfect for a quiet read.
I enjoyed the romance and chemistry between Estelle and Atlas—an inevitable connection even though they were both looking for someone else. I liked their interactions and how they gradually became a source of support for one another 💙
The secondary characters and the mystery were also a nice addition to the plot.
I recommend this book!

10/10 Must read.
All the emotions. This story made my heart feel so full it probably raised my faith in humanity to unsafe levels. Romantic, emotional, beautifully written, hopeful, swoony, and unforgettable.
I am absolutely obsessed with The Stranger I Love. Obsessed. annekawalker did an absolutely stunning job!!This book had me taking over 100 screenshots of quotes and favorite moments because I could not bear the thought of forgetting them. Every chapter gave me something that made my heart ache, soar, melt, or completely spiral in the best way.
This is hands down one of the best executions of the Little Mermaid trope I have ever read and the fact that it isn’t fantasy makes it even more impressive. No magical kingdoms or elaborate fantasy elements needed. And the communication?? Shockingly refreshing. Yes, they both had secrets and complicated pasts, but they knew they did. There wasn’t endless manufactured drama from assumptions or ridiculous misunderstandings. They were honest about not being ready to share everything yet, and that made their relationship feel so much more mature and real. Also: GOLD STAR because Atlas did not make decisions for her, he wanted to talk thru it and be open and honest and lwt her choose!!! We love a man who respects autonomy.
Speaking of Atlas… SWOON. Worthy. Every soft moment, every protective instinct, every emotional crack in his armor i adored him. Completely.
And Reggie honestly surprised me too! I expected one thing and ended up not hating him. I would like to see more of him. Speaking of more books... I now desperately need Augusta’s book immediately because I am NOT ready to leave this world yet

“Well, then. If you desire to hold my hand again, I am all too happy to oblige you.”

The Stranger I Love is a total ten star read. I was so engrossed in this story and invested in the characters, I never wanted the story to end. I was impressed at the way the author balanced so much depth and character growth with such great romance beats and humor in this book. It was filled with these beautiful messages of strength, hope, forgiveness, and family while also having some of the best romantic tension in any book I have read this year. I can’t remember being this giddy from almost kisses like I was reading this book. I mean, Atlas has redefined the “lean” and I need to find myself a larder.

Estelle and Atlas had sparks that could light up the 4th of July. I honestly could not get over their witty banter—that push and pull—and can I just emphasize again all those almost kisses. I think these almost kisses stole the show and were just as satisfying as the real thing, though that first kiss was so well-earned, I loved it! I also loved the conflict and stumbling blocks the two had to overcome for their relationship to be. It was all the swoon with none of the spice and I was here for it.

Set in the Victorian era, this dual POV romance had a fresh plot, characters you will absolutely fall for and cheer on, and a romance that is made for the record books if I do say so myself. It’s memorable, hilarious, and filled with a sweet happy ever after. I highly recommend this book!

This is a clean romance.

before bed. It was glued to my fingers and refused to be ignored.

How I loved the beginning of this book. There was so much in that first scene. Witnessing Estelle’s determined, strong-willed nature as she packed and took
control of her life was fantastic.

Then we get to see her heart when coming upon an injured man. Those same
initial characteristics Estelle had could make some selfish, but not her. She had a strong sense of right and wrong, even when it went against societal standards.

What a precious gift Estelle gave Atlas by saving him and giving him a second chance at life. Their interactions had me reading just to see them together again.
And the boat scene. It was hilarious. Also, the mystery surrounding who attacked Atlas was a thread that carried through the book with an unexpected and clever payoff.

The friendship between Augusta and Estelle was the sweetest. I adored Nora and
how she could stand her ground with Estelle. I admired her fierce loyalty and
ability to go toe to toe with Estelle.

If you’re looking for a book that you can’t put down, gives you all the feels, and makes you laugh, then you’ll enjoy The Stranger I Love. I was given a complimentary copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

"My dear stranger," I whispered to him in parting. "You must not give up."

“I fell in love with you when you were but a stranger.”

I absolutely adored this Victorian romance. It’s the first book in the Runaway Bride series & was seriously so much fun! Estelle would rather marry for love and live as a governess than marry someone her brother has picked out for her. So she runaway and through a series of events she finds herself drawn to an injured stranger after she rescues him. But she must leave him before discovering who he is. She later finds herself working for the brooding and unpredictable Lord Camden. They are both running from their pasts and when secrets are reveled things get messy. It’s full of second chances, redemption, forgiveness, family, a little mystery, some danger & lots of secrets. There were so many swoony moments from midnight snacks to the “boat incident” which had me giggling. It’s just sweet and swoony & left me with a smile on my face. And that epilogue has me excited for the next book in the series 🥰 If you are looking for a fantastic historical romance this is it!

“I have never caught a woman flying toward me from a boat while simultaneously treading water. And I certainly did not catch this one.”

3.5 rounded down. I wanted to love it…the premise is good. But I kept finding inconsistencies, and lies/misunderstandings that dragged on way too long. Some characterization was uneven for both our leads. Was Atlas just a gambler? Or a womanizer too? Hard to tell from his guilt over lots of things, but there is only an allusion to a few kisses. Kind of jarring. There was also Charlotte who was such a perfectionist but then the lying that just dragged out. The un solicited engagement was. . .weird. Again, wanted to love it but it didn’t quite land. Mom in law hating Ireland a weird amount because a random dead daughter character died there. A stretch. Also, maybe it was a kindle thing, but there was some unevenness in the editing. (Food as faire and fare for example within two pages of each other. Also, some weird verb tense issues. Lastly, love dual POV, but not when it is first person. Meh.

What I did like? Some good banter. A friendship that grew in more normal ways and in some natural situations. Actual character growth. Governess story.

This is such a fun unknown identity story. There were parts where I just wanted the characters to really look at each other and know who they really were!

Estelle is such a strong young woman. When her brother tells her he's engaged her to a stranger, she knows she doesn't want that life, and she leaves without telling anyone where she was going. She decides to be a governess, and heads to London to find a job. What she finds instead is a man who has been hurt, lying in an alley. She takes it upon herself to nurse him back to health, and then leaves before he can know who she is.

Atlas, unbeknownst to either of them, was the man Estelle saved. I loved the way he has his heart changed from who he was at the beginning of the book to someone that Estelle can fall in love with. I loved that these two had an inside joke about bread. And the way they would find each other eating it in the middle of the night.

This is such a great story! I can't wait for the next book in the series!

This nod to the story of The Good Samaritan was a lot of fun since it has a romantic twist to it. Estelle was courageous and a bit impetuous as she rescues Atlas Camden from would be killers. But, being brave isn’t always easy and coming to the aid of someone is the best thing you can do.

Estelle was my favorite character. I loved that she would leave her comfortable life and strike out on her own to find out what she wanted. Her act of bravery in helping Atlas lead to the best possible HEA.

This it the first book in The Runaway Brides series, and I am looking forward to reading the next one. As always, Ms. Walker creates characters that are those who you would love to meet in real life, and I hope to see the people who are in this story be a part of the future books. I love that I can recommend this kisses only book to readers young and mature.

I received a copy of the book from the author. All opinions are my own.

I loved this story and everything about it so much that I’m having a hard time putting it into words.

This second chance romance was filled with so much heart, humor, teasing, transformation, forgiveness, and a dash of mystery and danger.

Right off the bat, Estelle endeared herself to me with her feisty, stubborn, independent nature and then because of her kind, caring, and gentle heart, she went and risked her safety by helping an injured stranger.

Atlas cannot forget the kind woman who saved him. This brooding, strong, protective man is determined to make amends and find his mysterious savior. His redemption in this story is superb.

Estelle and Atlas have such a wonderfully teasing and swoony relationship. The slow progression and tenderness made my heart melt. Estelle brought out the dashing and flirty side of Atlas. Oh how I love these two!!

I adored Augusta and her “side” story of friendship with Estelle and her growth. I so hope for her own story.

Some Highlights:
💙Gingersnaps
💙Pond
💙The stables
💙The bread “debate”

Thank you to Anneka R. Walker for the copy. All opinions are my own.

The H&H I love

I was absolutely drawn to Estelle and Atlas' story so much that it was difficult putting my kindle down for daily obligations. Though he was initially no hero, Atlas' transformation proved that second chances are worthwhile and a person can change for the better--if motivated. Estelle is a heroine who's quite easy to love, especially her strength of character (minus the white lies so her neglectful brother couldn't find her), kindness, and courage in saving the stranger. The initial interactions between Atlas and Estelle were hilarious while their simmering tensions kept me cheering for their happily ever after. I'm hoping to read Augusta's story next please!

Ooh, Anneka has struck gold once again—she continues to delight and entertain with her lovely writing, spunky protagonists, and swoony love interests. I love this concept of a runaway bride and the elements of danger and deception in a Victorian romance. The Good Samaritan storyline was perfectly crafted, and the ending hints at a sequel where a side character becomes the protagonist. I need that book as soon as possible.
As always, Anneka's characters leap off the page, and I'm invested in how they'll overcome their obstacles. I saw the potential for predictable—tiresome—plot lines, but she steers clear of cliches and creates something real. I seriously struggled to put this down to do responsible things like make dinner or go to bed.
Don't run away, run TOWARD this book and get your copy asap. If you've ever enjoyed a historical romance, this author is one of the best in the genre. Thank you to @authorannekawalker for the gifted advance copy.

The Stranger I Love was so hard to put down! It sucked me right into the story. It was so fun and exciting and romantic!
Estelle and Atlas were both amazing, and I loved each of their character arcs. The connection between them was so real, and I loved how they were so ready to stand up for each other.
There was so much humor in this, and the witty banter was on point! But also, the humor enhanced the emotional connection between Estelle and Atlas, not overtaking the story.
The side characters were also great supports; the relationships were complex and realistic.
I can't wait to read the next in the series and will definitely be recommending this to all other book lovers!

3.5 ⭐️

This book sucked me in right away. Lord Camden getting beat up, Estelle running away from home and finding him on the street, nursing him back to health and THEN the forced proximity when they meet again… so fun! I think the middle just dragged on too long and i was ready for them to figure things out a bit sooner. I felt like this book didn’t need at least 100 of its pages and their connection felt a bit stagnant through the middle. I liked it well enough to want to read the rest of the future books in this series if they happen though.
