The Self-Aware Interview: Essentials for Every Enneagram Type

Rate this book
You can’t script your way through a great interview.

Most job seekers try. They rehearse answers, memorize stories, and chase the “perfect” response only to walk away feeling like they didn’t truly show who they are.

That’s the problem.

Great interviews aren’t about performance. They’re about self-awareness.

In The Self-Aware Interview, Carolyn Illman draws on 15+ years of experience as a hiring leader, Amazon Bar Raiser, and career coach to reveal what actually works in today’s interview landscape. Instead of teaching you what to say, she shows you how to understand why you say it, and how that changes everything.

Using the Enneagram as a practical framework, you’ll discover how your personality patterns influence:

-How you prepare (and overprepare)
-The stories you choose, and the ones you avoid
-Your communication style under pressure
-The way you respond to behavioral interview questions
-Your decision-making during the hiring process

Whether you’re actively job searching, navigating a career transition, or leading hiring decisions, this book will help you move beyond guesswork and into interviews that actually reflect who you are and what you bring.

Because the strongest candidate isn’t the most polished. They are the most self-aware.

It was such a treat to get to sit with it and work through this book. It takes two topics, interview prep (on both sides of the interview) and the Enneagram world, and blends them in a way that feels relatable and extremely helpful. There are actionable strategies and tips throughout, and I especially liked the focus on self-awareness rather than one-size-fits-all advice.

If you’re preparing for holding interviews, being an interviewee, or interested in personality growth and personal depth in the Enneagram world, this book is definitely worth checking out.

"The Self-Aware Interview" offers a fascinating, refreshingly human look at the job interview process from both sides of the table. Carolyn Illman uses the Enneagram system as a lens to help both candidates and interviewers identify their unique "soft" strengths and potential blind spots.

I particularly appreciated Carolyn's transparency in sharing her personal experiences from within hiring loops. Her descriptions of the "debrief" process—where hiring teams compare notes and sometimes navigate intense internal conflict to reach a decision—offer a rare, behind-the-scenes look at how deliberations actually happen.

One of the most empowering takeaways for me was the shift in perspective for the job seeker. Instead of feeling intimidated, the book encourages candidates to treat the interview as a "litmus test" to see if the company is the right fit for them. The advice to ask direct "dealbreaker questions," even when they feel scary, is a great reminder that the seeker has as much right to evaluate the role as the company has to evaluate the candidate.

After reading through the nine Enneagram types and learning how different subtypes—such as Self-preservation or Social—can influence performance and perception, I am motivated to research my own type more deeply. This is an excellent resource for anyone looking to bring more self-awareness and authenticity to their next career move.

The Self-Aware Interview by Carolyn Illman is a practical and insightful read for anyone who wants to approach interviews with more intention and self-awareness. What stood out to me most is that this book is useful for both sides of the interview process: the person being interviewed and the person conducting the interview.

I appreciated the way Carolyn uses the Enneagram as a tool for understanding how we may come across to others, especially in high-pressure first-impression situations like interviews. That kind of awareness is valuable not only when preparing for a job interview, but also in broader professional and personal interactions.

I also found the reflection questions at the end of each chapter especially helpful. They give the reader a chance to pause and think through their own patterns, assumptions, strengths, and blind spots. Chapter 4, “Interviewer Mindset & Preparation,” was one of my favorite sections because it highlights how much responsibility interviewers have in creating a thoughtful and effective interview process.

Overall, this is a clear, accessible, and useful book with practical takeaways for job seekers, hiring managers, and anyone interested in better understanding how they show up in important conversations.

I wish I had this book when I was going through my most recent rounds of interviews!

I so appreciated this approach of not only knowing your own enneagram type, but also taking into consideration the enneagram types of your interviewers. Additionally, it takes into consideration a more holistic approach in guidance for not only those seeking jobs, but also those hiring.

With AI playing so much into the entire process of job hiring, the human approach and understanding the different types of enneagrams, is paramount, now more than ever. Taking into context the wide range of behavioral questions (and addressing questions that you haven't prepared for) is so critical, which this book prepares you for. I also appreciated the reflection questions for both job seekers and interviewers alike. The personal experiences and applications were helpful in seeing this approach applied, not just in theory.

This book is especially important in such an unprecedented job landscape that we face today - highly recommend!

(ARC) As an enneagram newbie, I was skeptical that this book would be helpful to me, but I’m so glad I picked it up! As someone who is often an interviewer in my full-time role (and occasionally an interviewee), I appreciated how the author addressed both perspectives in the book. The author guides the reader through identifying their enneagram with a simple quiz and gives practical tips for using enneagram traits to your advantage during the interview process. Along the way she shares relatable stories from her own experiences and keeps the reader engaged. I really enjoyed learning about the other enneagrams and found helpful tips in each of the sections. This book has helped me see the interview process through a new lens, and I’m excited to dive further into the world of enneagrams and become stronger on both sides of the interview table, armed with new questions and a refined sense of self-awareness.

The Self-Aware Interview is a breath of fresh air in the career development space. Instead of offering generic hacks or scripts to memorize, Carolyn Illman leverages her extensive tech-industry interviewing experience to show that true success comes from self-awareness and authenticity.

By blending the foundational STAR method with the personality insights of the Enneagram, the author provides a highly customized roadmap for every type of professional. This book helps job-seekers own their flaws and unique strengths, while giving hiring managers the tools to check their unconscious biases and conduct empathetic, effective interviews. Quick, actionable, and incredibly empowering. A must-read for anyone looking to navigate today's tough job market with confidence.

As someone completely new to the concept of Enneagram types, this book was very insightful and nothing I had ever learned before. Illman does a wonderful job of explaining it thoroughly while adding real-life applications and examples from her personal experiences in the corporate world as both the interviewer and interviewee. I love how she focuses on encouraging you to evaluate your own experiences, opinions, and even biases.

This book is both thorough yet easily understandable without using too much corporate jargon. Illman does a great job of posing questions on both sides of the interview table to help you succeed. It was a very interesting read and one I highly recommend for anyone looking to improve on their interviewer or interviewee skills.

This book is a great new resource for job seekers and job interviewers!
The author provides a lot of practical interview advice for each Enneagram type. Each section includes specific questions to ask, pitfalls to avoid, advice about interacting with different types, and reflection questions.
The material is well organized and clearly written, and there are a lot of engaging personal anecdotes drawn from Illman's own experience.
I appreciated that she avoids being overly reductive about the Enneagram types. Even if Enneagram or personality types aren't really your thing, I think you could learn a lot from this!

This book is perfect for anyone curious about how their personality type might impact the interview process.

The Self-Aware Interview helps you understand how you naturally think, prepare, and respond under pressure, based on your Enneagram type, and gives you practical advice for what you can do better.

What stands out most is how empowering this book is. It shifts the focus from trying to “perform perfectly” to showing up as your best, most authentic self.

If you’re actively job searching or in a hiring role, this book gives you tools that actually stick. It’s a thoughtful, modern take on interviewing that feels both encouraging and actionable.

This is a fantastic read for anyone conducting interviews or preparing for one. Carolyn does a great job providing examples and highlighting what to think about before the interview process. Her honesty about her own experiences is especially helpful, reminding you that everyone has had a “cringe” moment or two, and explaining how to avoid them in the future. The advice feels practical and easy to apply, whether you are new to interviewing or have been doing it for years.

If you are looking for a job or hiring, this is a great resource. I happened to be reading it just days before interviewing a new candidate, and it gave me so many useful tips.

As a former corporate recruiter who taught behavioral interview training, this book should be part of your permanent shelf collection. Definitely more relevant for active interviewers and interviewees, it’s a book that has so many great tips and thoughtful questions regardless of how much you know (or want to know) about enneagrams. What’s great too - you don’t have to finish the book to get great advice - take what you want from it depending on what you need at the time. I’m sure I will be referring back to it for years to come.

I had the chance to read an advanced copy of The Self-Aware Interview, and as a recent college grad who’s been in a lot of interviews lately, I found it super insightful. I loved the mix of different perspectives and real stories, it made it an engaging, easy read. It was also really interesting to get a look at interviewing from the employer’s side. Definitely a helpful read if you’re navigating the job search process.

I love how this book moves away from fake, scripted interview answers and focuses on just being yourself. Using the Enneagram to figure out your own interviewing quirks and blind spots is pure genius. It’s short, practical, and feels like getting advice from a really smart friend who wants you to succeed. Really worth reading 🙌.

My wife is an Enneagram Coach (she says I am a 2), so I found this book both fascinating and very practical. Although I am not in the market for a new job, I would highly recommend this book to people who are, whether they are already familiar with the Enneagram or completely new to it.

A great introduction to the Enneagram for interviews. As a type 2 myself, and an Enneagram coach, I would have benefitted in my history from some of the information in this book.

It has been a long time since I’ve seen a fresh approach to the interview process. Carolyn’s book provides this in a very positive way. I was unfamiliar with enneagrams prior to reading this, and now I’m very intrigued. Linking enneagram type to practical interview tips is extremely useful. All in all this is a readable, enjoyable, and informative read.
