The end has arrived. The unstoppable wave of interdimensional Incursions has obliterated universe after universe until only two remained — the Marvel Universe and the Ultimate Universe. Their collision has left nothing but a vast, patchwork planet forged from the shattered remnants of countless realities. On this broken stage, heroes and villains struggle to survive. Strange new domains rise. Familiar faces return in shocking new forms. And at the throne of creation itself sits Doom — absolute master of all.
VISIONARY. DEFINITIVE. UNMISSABLE.
From master storyteller Jonathan Hickman comes the definitive Marvel saga — the cataclysmic event where the Fantastic Four, Avengers, Spider-Man, the X-Men and more face their final battle as the entire Multiverse falls.

Now that is consistency. At first, that was a lot to unpack, but the story was really good. There's absolutely zero spoilers for the secret wars movie that is coming out. There's no way they do any of this with any of these characters. That was probably my least favorite part. The side characters. Needed more Spider-man. Ending was a little rushed, but still peak. Some crazy stuff in this.
Having just been thrown into this story it’s very confusing, the ending is a bit unclear and there’s way too many moving parts. Additionally I do not like how the faces are drawn here, they often look really bad and dopey.
All that to say, if you just accept the world you’re being thrown into… this book is amazing man 😭. The action is phenomenal, the writing is tremendous and above all— the story is extremely compelling. Every page turned was gripping. May Doom save us all‼️
Read this in prep for the two-parter movies coming up, and Hickman’s writing style is just not for me. Just as talky as Time Runs Out, but has better concepts and ideas than that did.
As much as “Time Runs Out” is a long wind-up to this, I am so glad I read that first. Makes “Secret Wars” streamlined and consequential. Some of the best contemporary Marvel storytelling; intimate and philosophical, yet also big and sprawling. Reed and Doom rarely share a panel, but still comes across as one of their grandest confrontations.
If you described the premise of this Marvel “big event” abstractly, I would prolly roll my eyes and call it too complex or fanciful. I don’t care for retcons, multiverses, etc. It just seems to be without meaningful scope or stakes.
However, in its actual instantiation, Hickman takes a very silly idea and achieves something really exceptional. By anchoring the story of “what if a man became God” in the very well established character (and manifold insecurities) of Victor Von Doom, I was sincerely drawn into the story here. I wanted to see what he would do every time he appeared on the page. That’s neat. Also, as presumably intended, I mused on what I unsettling dimensions of my psyche might be revealed by God-hood.
A compelling Hickman. Incredible art from Ribic. Highly recommended for heavy nerds. Probably missable for people not invested in the Marvel world.
Finally got around to reading this one after a decade and it was worth the wait. Good story with just super solid art all around.
My only complaint is the ending felt like it happened too quickly. But, such a solid read.
This is one of those that if you haven't had the opportunity to read, grabbing the Premier Collection version is the perfect size, especially for me, cause I grabbed it to read on the plane.
This is the third or fourth time I've read Jonathan Hickman's Secret Wars and I genuinely think it gets better every time I read it. Making an incredibly convoluted way to reset the Marvel Universe by means of an incredibly simple story that stands on its own. I definitely think reading select portions of Time Runs Out made me appreciate things in the opening issue more but this story works so well on its own.
Another excellent addition from the amazing Marvel team!!! Hard to believe it has been a little over a decade now since the actual comics were first released. Decided to give it a go with the new upcoming Doom movie on the horizon later this year. So glad I did!!! Artwork and storyline were incredible. Easy to see why this has become another Marvel classic! Highly recommend it to anyone who is a fan of the comic book/graphic novel genre.
Re-reading after a few years. I read it as singles going back and forth between Avengers and New Avengers and really enjoyed the story then, it is all a more rewarding re-read with moment’s I looked forward to seeing again and others that I had forgotten about. This is required reading before reading regret wars, bonus points if you read the fantastic four as well.
Story was good, with some great art, but some rather low-key power displays. I want Kirby dots, I want planets being hurled at people, I want Infinity Gauntlet/Crisis on Infinite Earths-type shit from someone claiming to have the power of a god.
Really great Reed/Doom stuff, and incredible art. A little too hard to follow, though. Not a great standalone read. So much background that probably makes this way better.
God Doom ripping out Thanos's entire skeleton is the hardest thing in this whole arc. Which is saying something since every character is aura-farming to the max this entire time.
